            Description:
In the National Health Service (NHS) in England and Wales an oversight body, the Audit Commission (AC), defines the scope of the external auditors' work, appoints the auditors and has oversight of their fees and audit quality. This heavily regulated audit regime mitigates some of the deficiencies observed in high profile corporate failures. Independence, it has been argued, is influenced by the total auditor remuneration paid by the client. In this study we examine total auditor remuneration in a regulated market which seeks to ensure audit independence and audit quality. In particular we undertake rigorous analysis of auditor remuneration by the type of auditor: We place emphasis on the differentiation between private sector firms and the AC's in-house auditors (District Audit). Individual private audit firms charge premiums (up to 16%) for particular audit work in identified locations, but no premiums were found when we examined total auditor remuneration. The regime appears to permit efficient operation of the audit market while safeguarding both audit independence and standards.

Remuneration may be viewed as more than merely a cost in doing business. It may be used as a motivational tool to help achieve a multitude of strategic goals. Within the global context, effective use of this tool requires addressing not only motivational factors but also cultural factors. In this thesis, factors are considered within a multinational corporate framework and within a Cultural Remuneration Model. The model defines corporate culture, professional culture, national culture and individual characteristics as factors influencing employee values associated with remuneration preferences. A strategically aligned, motivated workforce may result when this type of remuneration analysis leads to the design of remuneration programs that take into account national culture influence.

The theoretical development of the model required a statistically significant multinational sample. To achieve this, data was collected in 17 countries from one multinational corporation within the chemical/oil industry. All 861 respondents were non-management, and performed technical functions. This sample selection reduced any variance associated with corporate or professional cultures. Empirical results were determined from the respondents through use of surveys. Two surveys were conducted, three months apart. National culture was operationalised within the framework of the five Hofstede cultural indices: power distance, long-term orientation, uncertainty avoidance, individualism and masculinity. Remuneration was operationalised using several theoretically substantiated constructs developed for this study. The survey results were analysed at both the country (ecological) and the individual employee levels. Analysis was completed using multilevel modeling of both country and employee level effects. At the ecological level, data means were calculated to establish a relationship between the national culture mean and remuneration preference mean on a country-by-country basis. These results were analysed using Spearman Rank Order Correlation statistics. At the individual level, analysis was completed using structural equation modeling. Random coefficient multilevel modeling techniques were used to complete the analysis. The ecological analyses on both surveys produced statistically significant correlations with the Hofstede results. The ecological level review of the relationship between national culture values and remuneration values indicated several direct relationships between the five cultural indices and their associated remuneration elements. The individual level analyses produced similar results indicative of the direct relationships between remuneration preferences and cultural values. Although several individual characteristics achieved significance in the structural equation models, their influence is only weak to moderate. The multilevel results indicated that more than 70% of the variance can be attributed to country level effects, rather than to individual level effects. Ecological level, individual level and multilevel models all identified a significant influence of national culture on employees' preference of remuneration elements within the oil/chemical multinational corporation environment. A strategically aligned, motivated workforce may result when this type of remuneration analysis leads to the design of remuneration programs that take into account national culture influence.

From the supplier: The salaries and benefits given between 1985 and 1990 to the top directors of 170 UK firms are analyzed to determine the relation between remuneration to company specific shocks. The results show that director pay is significantly related to shareholder returns and that sales growth is a good predictor of pay levels. During the period studied, the remuneration given to top directors rose at a rate of 12 to 16% per year.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to Understand.......2007-10-18

This is written for people writing adult training material...but I would recommend it for anyone who is new to page layout and publishing, and wants to get an introduction to "the basics."

This book is easy to read and understand. It practices what it preaches--a straightforward layout with clear examples of what to do and what not to do.

Once I started using the ideas in this book, my page layout moved to a whole new level. I started getting compliments left and right...people thought that the content had improved, but it was the page design.

I bought several other training books at the same time, but this is the one I turn to again and again.

Frank includes suggested layouts that are easily copied into MS Word. She also includes consistency checklists to help you create an overall design for your publication.

Advanced users may wish that she discussed color and use of photographs. She also did not discuss material to be viewed online. I feel that those two elements really add to modern training. However, as a primer this is excellent.

If you're like me, you know what you want to write but have to visualize how you should write it. This book is a great guide on how to visualize and create great documents and training materials and I'm truly grateful to the author for writing it.

                                    Book Description

Internet use for business-to-business e-commerce is expected to grow at spectacular rates. Many experts feel that perceived lack of trust in e-commerce transactions on the Internet has contributed to the slow adoption of e-commerce in the recent past. This book provides an avenue for managers and researchers to explore, examine and describe interorganizational trust relationships in e-commerce participation. With the identification of trust behaviors in business relationships, Inter-Organizational Trust for Business to Business E-Commerce will increase the awareness of e-commerce participants, who can then examine their own and their trading partners' trust behaviors.

                                      Description:
Given the uncertainties of online transactions, e-commerce encourages the creation of institutional structures for online exchange relationships. Building upon the notion of institutional trust, this research examines how institutional structures develop through governance mechanisms leading to technology trust derived from structural assurances for online dyadic relationships. Technology trust is defined as the subjective probability by which organizations believe that the underlying technology infrastructure is capable of facilitating transactions according to their confident expectations. Using a cognitive process framework, we discuss four perspectives of trust, namely technological, economic, behavioral, and organizational perspectives, to show how technology trust evolves into relationship trust. We examine the impact of technology trust within an inter-organizational dyad between Cisco and Compaq. The findings posit that technology trust contributes and evolves into relationship trust. The study provides evidence on how specific structural assurances in Cisco Connection Online help to build initial online technology trust in B2B marketplaces that in turn promotes relationship trust and builds trustworthy e-commerce relationships. The paper discusses theoretical and managerial implications of this study, while proposing suggestions for future research.

                                        Book Description

Automation now supplants economic activity more than it supports it. Furthermore, this process is fueled by enormous economic forces, which intensifies dependence on automation and spawns other sociological consequences. Of these consequences, fraud generates the highest immediate losses, amounting to $300 billion annually. In the long run, however, the greatest economic cost will occur through loss of jobs, and a lowering of net skills for most of the balance. Other consequences include pervasive invasion of privacy, and overdependence on technology at the expense of developing critical reasoning, judgement, and a personal sense of responsibility. Fortunately, many of these consequences could be ameliorated by automated countermeasures that offset the excesses. Unfortunately, it usually takes a crisis to institute fundamental reform, though the looming economic meltdown stemming from the mounting federal debt offers just such an opportunity.
