From the supplier: Data base industries employ several measures to determine customer satisfaction. Conversations and interviews are best suited for small groups while surveys and independent evidence work on a larger scale. The real measure of quality hinges on specifications based on customer requirements.

From the supplier: Several forecasts for the managed care industry are discussed. Some futurists believe that the industry will be dramatically transformed by innovations in medical and information technology. Others say that managed care will grow considerably and that its focus will turn to prevention and wellness. There are also those who believe that this practice will pave the way for the development of a much better healthcare service delivery system. It has likewise been predicted that the increasing acceptance of managed care will lead to greater openness to alternative treatments and concepts, such as chiropractic medicine, acupuncture, transcendental meditation, yoga and prayer. However, not all predictions are favorable. Some futurists point to the possibility that the continued growth of managed care will result in the delivery of health care services in an assembly-line fashion to less and less individuals.

Worth reading...only from the standpoint of opportunity finding!.......2006-08-17
The title, 'When Opportunity Knocks: How to Exploit the Unexpected in Business', is certaining very appealing when I first encountered this book on the amazon website.
The author readily shares his personal anecdotes & inspiring stories as he details the abundant variety of business opportunities around us. He even highlights the characteristics of successful opportunists as well as some blunders & unrealistic opportunities to avoid. In fact, he has identified thirty five sources of seemingly profitable opportunities. In these respects, he has done a marvellous job!
What I find lacking in this book is specific information pertaining to the process of assessing & evaluating the viability of those opportunities. Finding opportunities, in tactical terms, is not a difficult matter. Just open up all your senses, especially your eyes, to what's happening around you, is good enough.
In reality, there are already many good books covering this aspect of exploiting the unexpected in business.
Besides assessment & evaluation, some opportunities may be too raw in scope &/or depth & may need further development &/or refinement. How does one develop &/or refine such an opportunity? Any information given in this area will definitely be useful to potential entrepreneurs.
I would have expected the author, with his many 'hard-knocks', to share at least his own personal as well as business experiences in assessing & evaluating opportunities. This incorporation would have made the book more complete for readers who are looking at this book from the business development angle.
On the whole & to conclude my review, I reckon this book is still worth reading, but only from the standpoint of opportunity finding!
Readers who are interested in the assessment & evaluation as well as pursuit of new opportunities, should read Michel Robert's Innovation Formula.

Book Description
The 'vices' are three bad habits into which economists have fallen over the past fifty years: bad statistics, bad theory, and bad applications of statistics and theory to public affairs. This book details the vices, tracing them to the influence of three giants of the 1940s and 1950s in economics, the Americans Lawrence Klein and Paul Samuelson, and the Dutchman Jan Tinbergen. McCloskey recommends a 'bourgeois', even feminine, virtue to replace the aristocratic and masculine vices of modern economics. She sees intellectual life as a bourgeois market of negotiating equals. What is good for a liberal democracy is good for intellectual life, she argues, even in the forbiddingly mathematical world of modern economics.
Customer Reviews:
Profound and Important.......2002-07-10
Deirdre McCloskey's little volume, The Vices of Economists-The Virtues of the Bourgeoisie, is a gem. Nothing less. Although it is short, it bulges with deep and important insights; although it is aimed principally at an audience of professional economists, it is relevant for anyone interested in the scientific method as well as policy; and although it is written by a professional economist, its prose is splendid.
The chapter of the book that strikes me as most important is Chapter 4, "The Arrogance of Social Engineering." The material here isn't simply another sermon on the complexity of the economy and society. It is, instead, a compelling explanation of why economists who make specific predictions about the future ("The price of tech stocks will rise over the next month" or "Megacorp's price-cutting will result in monopoly power") truly should be ignored.
And her conclusion! That is not to be missed. I especially like, and appreciate, her wise words of advice: "Know above all that you do not know."
What's Ailing Economics?.......2000-06-24
A rarity, a lively and readable critique of economic thinking. McCloskey is an economic historian trained in the Chicago school and a pioneer in the study of economic rhetoric. A stylish and witty writer, well versed in technical matters but capable of writing lucidly for a non-technical audience, as demonstrated here, McCloskey is perhaps best known for the sex change operation which took place during the visiting professorship at Erasmus University in Rotterdam, where the lectures which this book reworks were given. In this volume McCloskey names the three principle vices of modern economics, all of which found their current form in the 1940s. They are: (1) the (Lawrence) Kleinian vice of mistaking statistical significance for scientific significance; (2) the (Paul) Samuelsonian vice of elevating blackboard proofs and other mathematical, but not necessarily scientific, values, and (3) the (Jan) Tinbergenean vice of social engineering, which presumes to know more than it can and threatens to infringe on individual freedom. In a brief epilogue, McCloskey endorses the adoption of "bourgeois" virtue as a counterweight to these errors. She recommends that Prudence -- the virtue that gave rise to economics -- not be seen in isolation. Economists, she says, should follow the example of Adam Smith and reconcile Produce with Justice and Temperance.
Book Description
Praise for the first edition:
As interest in coaching grows, I think Flahertys book will come to stand out as a definitive work. Peter M. Senge
Coaching: Evoking Excellence in Others proposes rigorous methods of practice and self-observation in a relationship of mutual trust, respect and freedom of expression. It will probe you to rethink and possibly undo how you relate to your clients, your partner, your staff, your friends, and how you produce long-term excellent performance in yourself.
This 2nd edition includes new chapters on working with the body and what to do when we find ourselves stuck in our coaching efforts. These chapters, have been included to expand the coaches repertory and readiness to step into wider areas of engagement with clients. As with the previous edition these chapters have annotated bibliographies at their conclusion that will assist the reader in continuing their study. The appendix also has expanded list of self-observation exercises and practices as well as additional material that can be used in assessment.
This book will act as a learning guide for new coaches and master coaches who want to challenge their methods of partnering with clients. It is also applicable to managers intending to include coaching in their developmental roles with team members.
The author has led workshops in coaching, communication, leadership, and project management for more than 12,000 people. These have included participants from many Fortune 500 companies such as AT&T, FMC, Chrysler, Ernst & Young, Cargill, Levi Strauss and Coopers & Lybrand.

Customer Reviews:
Very dry reading.......2007-08-28
I must say that I was extremely disappointed by this book. Given all of reviews I saw/read before buying the book, I expected a very helpful tome. Instead, this turned out to be one of the driest books I've ever tried to read.
There are much better, and more helpful, books out there on coaching.
Good but hardly definitive .......2007-08-23
Mr. Flaherty's book reveals the wide and disparate meanings we apply to the word "coaching." My primary focus is in the area of managing and coaching professional technology salespeople. I found this book to be uneven and at times even irritating. Too many references to Heidegger and other philosophers, which struck me as irrelevant appeals to authority with little relevance to coaching. I like a good discussion of philosophy, the nature of being, etcetera, but in this context it seemed out of place. At other times, Flaherty's insights were brilliant.
Despite numerous references intended to persuade us of the foundations for the author's positions, Flaherty includes questionable material in this book which he acknowledges will be controversial. The section on body types is, in my view, ludicrous stereotyping. My field is medical technology, and when I read that "ectomorphs are tall, thin, long-limbed, long-necked folks... people of this body type often have complex and highly wrought nervous systems," I cringed. What is a highly wrought nervous system? Where is the scientific evidence to support this? Basing assumptions on people's "body type" is fraught with danger, not the least of which is being dead wrong. More importantly, what in the world does this have to do with coaching, unless perhaps if you are a fitness coach or physical therapist. It might then have some dubious merit, but Flaherty is suggesting that coaches, generally, consider these "factors." On the other hand, coaching awareness of one's physical body and its signals and responses to internal and external influences certainly has merit.
The author also goes out of his way to demean the views of Ferdinand Fournies, whose book Coaching for Improved Work Performance he apparently views as competition to his own. He dismisses Fournies as a behaviorist and suggests his coaching advice belittles those being coached. Yet Flaherty frequently remarks that you must deal with observable behavior. What's more, he acknowledges that "when someone declines coaching," but you are still responsible for their results, "I recommend that you use traditional management procedures," with "clarity about outcomes and the consequences for not reaching those outcomes." In short, he says you should do what Fournies, much more eloquently and sensitively, advocates.
There is a great deal a reader on the subject might gain from Flaherty's book, but I would not recommend it in isolation. After reading it, I was surprised at the numerous glowing and uncritical reviews it received. Read it WITH Fournies' book - the two are not contradictory. But if you are only going to read one book on coaching, read John Whitmore's 3rd edition of Coaching for Performance, a brilliantly straightforward, unpretentious, and exceedingly pragmatic view of how we can help others realize their potential in most relationships. If by chance you are coaching salespeople, also read Managing Major Sales, by Neil Rackham and Richard Ruff.
Excellent resource for coaches!.......2007-07-14
I am a family and life coach, focusing mainly on parents and teens. I found Flaherty's book to have many useful and powerful tools that can be used with any client, including parents, kids, youth, teens, and families. Coaching leaves people feeling more competent and helps them learn how to self-correct. Teaching this to children and youth is powerful and can change the direction of their lives. Helping them feel more competent as a result of learning how to self-correct seems to me to be something that would be invaluable to clients both young and old. Children are like sponges and learn very quickly. They can achieve more balance in their own young lives when they are given the tools in which to do so. Parents can learn to be powerful coaches for their children through being coached themselves.
Because coaching is a relationship that is based on mutual respect, trust, and freedom of expression, it serves to support all clients. We have to remember that clients are in the middle of their lives and that includes kids. They may have developed some undesired behaviors and it will take some patience and caring to help walk them through the steps to change. We as coaches can observe and learn when something is not working for both parents and kids, then share with them the steps they can take toward positive change. I think it is extremely powerful for a child or teen to learn that he or she has the ability to make these changes and to determine the outcomes in their lives.
Flaherty teaches the importance of having a strong foundation that can act as an anchor in our coaching experience with our clients. Coaching is a way of working with people that leaves them more competent and fulfilled so that they are more able to contribute in any area of their life. It also helps clients to learn to self-correct. They know when things are going well and can see when things are not. They can learn to change behaviors that will help them in making the adjustments needed to correct it.
What's true is what works. Coaching is about practical outcomes and is a discipline that requires self-correction, freshness, and innovation. Our coaching has to be adapted to fit individuals who already have their own way of doing things. Language, observation, and assessment occur simultaneously. They never occur without the other. The coach must be very precise, consistent, and grounded in listening and speaking to the client. The coach must also have a general sense of the way the client is in and makes sense of the world.
Flaherty said: "The more profoundly and systematically we understand someone, the more effective and lasting our coaching can be."
I will use the tools in Flaherty's book for years to come. I found it to be very clear and concise and his illustrations and charts useful and practical. I will turn to his book whenever I feel it's time for me to re-assess.
Great introduction to Coaching.......2007-05-09
If you are interested in learning about coaching and partnering with clients to create change - this is a book for you! It is a must read!
interesting; advanced level.......2007-05-08
This book on coaching is considered a classic in its field, and I appreciate its depth. I think a beginner could take this book at "face value" and learn a lot about coaching, but an understanding of the theoretical basis makes it an even more valuable resource.

DOUG MILLSTIEN IS OUT OF THIS WORLD .......2007-08-07
This person cant write if his life depended on it, i read it and now used it for a door stop. I wouldnt recommend this to anyone. I might use it if hes lucky for my son to sit on at the dinner table.
Setting your brand on fire........2001-06-09
There are so many books on the market that discuss the concept of 'brand' from so many different points of view, that it's difficult to sort out the good from the bad. This is one of the good ones.
Moon and Millison define the basic concepts around brand. They explain in clear buzzword-light language what influences the growth and positioning of a brand. Finally, they provide ample and well-explained pointers to further reading to help understand some of their basic ideas more clearly.
As a consultant working for a systems integrator, one of the things that impressed me the most was the focus on execution. Many books about branding seem to imply that the technical details are irrelevant to brand success, but _Firebrands_ makes the point that a relationship with a customer only has brand value when supported by appropriate policies, training, and technical infrastructure. This is a message that can't be, IMO, repeated often enough.
Well worth the time to read.
my review.......2001-03-08
I have read Firebrands and found it extremely useful. As a systems integrator in St. Louis, I have used this book to help my clients understand the importance of a technical infrastructure in building a vibrant brand.... Mind you, this is not a 60 second brand manager book.
Not Hype! A System for Reality...and innovation........2001-03-05
Firebr@nds is not a bedside book, it's a cookbook, a tool for being AT CAUSE when it comes to building successful, powerful communications for the internet.
As a Technology Interface Architect , the building of brand into the interaction of the product is vital to it's success.
My clients over the past 12 years have been besieged by what appears to them this mysterious thing out there that will grow over some process, that we will somehow invoke, and it will be successful if the powers that be are on our side.
This book makes it all very clear, while eliciting sympathy for all of us who have built brands. A genuine appreciation for its complexity is gained as you read a systemization of brandbuilding in Firebr@ands.
Moon has given us a thorough and deep taxonomy for building the brand from many different pragmatic angles. The dramatic distinctions in language make it easy to use the language as a tool in any company when it comes to educating organizations in building brand.
This is a book that I will return to over and over again as I help my clients grow their products into the future. It was a very brave, and necessary book to write. BRAVO!!!!
Beyond the Frontiers - A genetic approach to the Brand.......2001-03-01
As the Chief Technical Officer of a Texas based e-services and print communication firm, I live in this interactive brandspace on a daily basis. The problem with this brave new world of pixels is simply that much is said and much is written but little intelligent communication occurs. I find the innovative and far reaching approach taken by Michael Moon to be the de facto foundation for the next "big thing".
The approach that one must take to these new media spaces and channels is not readily discernible from the clearly defined trails blazed in the more traditional areas of branding. This new territory is as different as the Earth is from the Moon [no pun intended]. The book travels beyond the areas marked as "unknown - there be dragons here" and opens a clear and understandable path into formerly mysterious areas.
What we need out here in the field is less hype and more substance. Firebrands is a rational, ground breaking treatise on the evolution of Branding. This is a pivotal work that serves as a wonderful deskside companion, as indispensible to me as my spell checker or my browser.
Michaels' best practices mental evolution from the time of the Jeff Martin led Digital Brand Building Seminars of the mid-90's to this opus show an extraordinary depth and breadth of thought and research . The Firebrands book is the Gray's Anatomy of Brand "science".
As my company moves forward with ground breaking, market defining services in the area of brand guaranty we will continue to consult the Firebrands roadmap. We anxiously await any follow-up materials that might come from this mind trust.
Be warned - this is not a shallow pop-business, executive book of the hour read. This is a genetic level approach to a new mindset. It must be read slowly, deliberately, and with a totally open mind. The graphics are not simply illustrative they are literally a book unto themselves. Read this brandspace atlas one chapter at a time, review the graphics, and with time and reflection you will understand.

For all who want to approach this in a practical manner.......2007-08-08
I found this book to be one of the best step by step guide for application to focus organization.
It takes technical approach and merges it with organizational thoughts to guide actionable results.
For anyone doing Balanced Scorecard, this is one of the best step by step guide that addresses strategy from the holistic and bottoms up approach.
A must read for senior management.
Not so good for novice.......2006-03-21
Probably the book is good for the experienced, but not so good for beginners like me. Although it addresses the questions like "what BSC is", I failed to get a clear picture of the art, and I'm waiting for some other books on the topic from Amazon.
Anyway, "essentials" are not introduction. To the title of this book, it's especially true.
Cuts to the chase - practical approach.......2004-06-23
I've read a number of BSC books, from Kaplan & Norton's original classic, to later works, and this is one of the very few that goes into practical implementation and management of a balanced scorecard.
What makes this book better than the others I've read is the way the author points out the pitfalls as well as the advantages of implementing and using this tool. He is objective and, more importantly, experienced, which is evidenced by how he places the BSC in context. This context is shown in the gap he uncovers between strategic themes, mission/vision/values, competencies, and purpose, and initiatives, objectives, measures and targets. The BSC fills that gap - if properly done and all of the key factors are understood.
I liked the way this book uncovers subtle key factors, such as the differences between strategy and operational effectiveness (often mistakenly viewed as the same thing), and what you should and should not be measuring. I also liked the way strategic themes were defined as a concept, as well as the use of tool called a paradox map to verify the alignment of tasks to strategy.
The bulk (and value) of this book is the implementation plan, which is governed by six critical success factors necessary to implement a BSC. It is here that the book shines because the implementation is laid out as a project (in fact, one of the six CSFs is to treat the implementation as a project), and is achievable with no non-value added steps.
If you want to gain an objective view of balanced scorecards and their value, and a pragmatic approach to implementing one, this book is the one I recommend.

From the author: In this paper the impact fracture behavior of two commercial, 10% and 25%, rubber-modified polyamide 6 grades is investigated by the Essential Work of Fracture methodology, which implies the testing of a series of samples of different ligament lengths and the determination of the total fracture energy. The study is based on data obtained from specimens made either from thick injected plates or bars. Tests were carried out under Charpy and Izod configuration. Two modes of fracture were displayed by the blends: ductile fracture or mixed mode depending on rubber content, processing conditions and ligament lengths of the samples. When samples displayed completely stable crack propagation behavior and geometric similarity of load-displacements diagrams, an essential work of fracture value [w.sub.Ie], independent of specimen thickness and testing configuration, could be extrapolated. Polym. Eng. Sci. 44:1707-1715, 2004. [c] 2004 Society of Plastics Engineers.

Book Description
Knowledge Capital: How Knowledge-Based Enterprises Really Get Built is an integrated, structured set of conversations with thought leaders and key practitioners in the fields of intellectual capital and knowledge management, who examine-in the form of conversations-the steps necessary for creating and implementing the various dimensions of a knowledge-based enterprise. These are the dimensions that need to be effectively addressed for the organization to successfully make the transition from an activity-based organization to a truly knowledge-based enterprise. The conversations that make up Knowledge Capital are not studies of theory separated from practice or practice without a strong theoretical base. Rather, they are the stories of how knowledge-based enterprises really get built, in the words of the people who built them. While every contributor begins from his or her own unique perspective and background, each moves toward a convergent understanding of the core elements, perspectives, and practices involved. These systemic conversations provide a body of knowledge and experience on how to craft and implement strategies, as well as the how values, learning, performance, relationships, innovation, and change play in the development of usable knowledge environment. These explorations, together, lead to a mapping of what are quickly becoming the foundations of the next stage of the field. Knowledge Capital gives the reader a readily accessible collection of insights and experiences essential for the new era in intellectual capital and knowledge management.
