About Research & Education Association
Research & Education Association (REA) is an organization of educators, scientists, and engineers specializing in various academic fields. Founded in 1959 with the purpose of disseminating the most recently developed scientific information to groups in industry, government, high schools, and universities, REA has since become a successful and highly respected publisher of study aids, test preps, handbooks, and reference works.
REA's Test Preparation series includes study guides for all academic levels in almost all disciplines. Research & Education Association publishes test preps for students who have not yet completed high school, as well as high school students preparing to enter college. Students from countries around the world seeking to attend college in the United States will find the assistance they need in REA's publications. For college students seeking advanced degrees, REA publishes test preps for many major graduate school admission examinations in a wide variety of disciplines, including engineering, law, and medicine. Students at every level, in every field, with every ambition can find what they are looking for among REA's publications.
While most test preparation books present practice tests that bear little resemblance to the actual exams, REA's series presents tests that accurately depict the official exams in both degree of difficulty and types of questions. REA's practice tests are always based upon the most recently administered exams, and include every type of question that can be expected on the actual exams.
REA's publications and educational materials are highly regarded and continually receive an unprecedented amount of praise from professionals, instructors, librarians, parents, and students. Our authors are as diverse as the fields represented in the books we publish. They are well-known in their respective disciplines and serve on the faculties of prestigious high schools, colleges, and universities throughout the United States and Canada.
Chapter 1: SCORING HIGH ON THE ACT ASSESSMENT
ABOUT OUR BOOK
This book has the tools to effectively prepare you for the ACT Assessment. It contains five full-length practice exams complete with answer keys and detailed explanations for each question, along with a topical review for each of the four individual tests that make up the ACT. All of the practice exams we provide are based on the latest ACT test administrations and contain every type of question that you can expect to encounter on the actual exam.
ABOUT THE ACT
Who Takes the ACT and What is It Used for?
The ACT is usually taken by high school juniors and seniors. The exam is used by college admissions officers as a way to fairly judge all the students who apply to their school. Because high schools across the United States use many different grading systems, ACT scores put everyone on more of an equal footing. Your ACT scores, along with other information provided by you and your high school, help colleges predict how well you will do at the college level.
If you don't do well on the ACT, don't panic! The exam can be taken over so that you can work on improving your scores. It's also not the be-all and end-all that you might think it is. Admissions officers use a number of criteria to judge applicants: Grade-point average, extracurricular activities, on-campus interviews, and the degree to which you've been taking challenging courses in high school are all factors that go into the mix. REA believes you have every reason to believe that, with enough of the right preparation, you can and should score well on the ACT. Nonetheless, you shouldn't think that not doing so will necessarily jeopardize your chances of attending the college of your choice. The very fact that you picked up this book, however, means that you're not one to leave much to chance. Having our test prep at your side as you approach test day will give you the extra shot of confidence we all sometimes need to climb the ladder of success.
Who Administers the ACT?
The ACT is developed and administered by ACT, Inc., and involves the assistance of educators throughout the country. The development process is designed and implemented to ensure that the content and difficulty level of the exam are appropriate.
When and Where is the ACT Given?
You should try to take the exam early in your junior or senior year so that you will have another opportunity to take it if you are not satisfied with your performance. Taking our practice exams will familiarize you with the types of questions and format of the ACT so that you do not have to go through the anxiety of learning about the ACT during the actual exam.
The ACT is usually administered five times a year throughout the country. It is given at hundreds of locations, including high schools. The usual testing day is Saturday, but the exam can be taken on an alternate day if a conflict, such as a religious obligation, exists.
To receive information on upcoming administrations of the ACT, consult the ACT Registration Bulletin, which can be obtained from your guidance counselor, or contact ACT, Inc., directly at:
ACT Registration
Phone: (319) 337-1270 (Weekdays 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ct)

Online registration or registration by phone is recommended
To take the ACT, you must pay a registration fee. A fee waiver may be granted in certain situations. To find out if you qualify, ask your guidance counselor.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2006-08-15
Helped my daughter become familiar with how the ACT is worded and what to expect on the exam. Eased some of her anxiety.
Horrible.......2006-07-22
Which is sad because the material is laid out great, but the amount of errors ruins it. There are typos everywhere, SIGNIFICANT typos, such as the wrong sign in an equation or missing punctuation in the answers of the grammar drills. If you do get the book, make sure you do the math for yourself, because you'll catch yourself correcting the book fairly often.
Very Worse Course For Time.......2005-04-06
This book of more than a thousand pages has every topic that could possibly be on the ACT. The topics are explained in a clear, concise manner. But there are so many topics that their explanations are almost too concise: Two or three sentences of explanations are given and a couple of examples. The format of the examples are in a No and Yes format for the English section. The drills in the English section and Science have good explanations with them. But in the Math section, in which work might be needed, there are no explanations, only answers. The Reading section has no explanation either. The diagnostic test and four other tests gives you great explanations for each topic, though.
Don't get me wrong, some topics are explained well because of the many sub-categories. But other topics are really sketchy on the details. Also, in the English section, the book expects you to memorize all the "by-the-book" terms, like superlative and present perfect. I had never even heard of those terms until I had taken a Spanish class. Moreover, other books might help you memorize things by acronyms but this book if just full of dry information.
If you have to take the ACT in a couple months or weeks, this is a very bad book for you. With all this info, you would need a year to get through it all. Moreover, there is so much stuff that you really don't need for the ACT. This book gives you years worth of information. You can really tell from the science topics of astrology, meteorology, physics, etc.
At least now I understand the elusive diffence between who and whom.

Book Description
This book aims to address the coordination of quality control with other aspects of a firm's production system and supply chain, specifically, the coordination between the inspection-repair of finished products and their follow-up services, between inspection and process revision, between production and inspection under capacity constraints, between replenishment and rework quantities, and between supply and substitution decisions. To address these issues, the authors have in recent years developed a set of dynamic approaches based on Markov decision programming and using stochastic comparison techniques, including those based on notions of stochastic convexity and submodularity. The focal question driving their studies is this: under what conditions and for what systems does a certain class of policies become optimal in the sense of striking the best coordination among several competing or even conflicting aspects in the production-inventory system? Particular emphasis has been put on the class of policies that have simple, threshold structures -- simple enough to facilitate implementation, but sophisticated enough to be optimal. Written in a self-contained and well-motivated manner, the book offers a timely and useful text or reference to researchers and practitioners in operations research and management, industrial and quality engineering, systems and control, applied mathematics and statistics, and related fields.

Book Description
This unique volume sets forth a managerial paradigm for helping companies to compete and prosper in a global market that is increasingly dominated by Japan, Germany and the emerging EEC. While emphasis on short-term profitability has been widely recognized as a serious handicap for companies that compete internationally, editors Stahl and Bounds reveal the full scope of the competitiveness problem. Traditional business theory, practice, and culture are deeply rooted in short-term, non-customer-oriented indicators such as stock price, volume of shipments, and quarterly earnings. These indicators, however, are no longer effective. According to Stahl and Bounds, companies need to structure themselves around net customer value--what the customer receives minus what the customer sacrifices. The book shows how organizations that focus on net customer value will ultimately enjoy more profits, market share, and customer loyalty than those based on short-term financial results. The contributors propose, as an alternative management model, a detailed, analytic paradigm that provides specific ways to identify, measure, monitor, produce, and improve customer value. Most importantly, they demonstrate why U.S. companies that want to survive and prosper in a competitive global economy will benefit from this management model. Delivering customer value involves all areas of business management. This book provides a significant methodological breakthrough by proposing new models for costing, product development, production and inventory control, process control, logistics management, marketing, finance, and human resources. With contributions by 42 authors from academia and business, this volume delineates structural systems and practical programs for obtaining better business results through improved quality and customer satisfaction. Many of the top Fortune 500 corporations are now training their managers in the customer value paradigm. Managers in competitive markets who do not fully understand the tenets, implications, and techniques of the customer value model set forth in this book face a serious barrier to business success.

Good starting point, a little outdated........1999-01-14
From my point of knowledge one of the first to address the issue of CV. Gives a good start for further research and some ideas. CV has from then on (1991) enjoyed a much finer discussion and conceptualization. Needs a new edition with a lot of redesigning.
Book Description
Immanuel Wallerstein's World-System theory made a big impact on International Political Economy when it was first formulated in the early 1980s. Although subsequently criticised, the recent demise of the Soviet system's historic attempt to delink from global capitalism has provided a perhaps unanticipated confirmation of the profundity of its insights. Now with this new book, Wallerstein and a team of colleagues from the Fernand Braudel Center for the Study of Economies, Historical Systems and Civilizations take world-system theory a major step forward.
Customer Reviews:
The choices we need to make over the next 25 years.......2000-04-09
This is an important albeit not uncontroversial contribution to the field of international political economy. The book tries to answer the question whether the world capitalist system is in crisis and the paths available for future world development. The works are firmly located within the world system thesis expounded by Wallerstein in many of his previous works.
The book intoruduces the concept of 6 vectors within which future paths can be examined. These are the inter-state system; world production; world labour force; human welfare; cohesion of states; and the structures of knowledge.
The book displays the weaknesses inherent in the world system thesis. These include overstating the degree of integration of the economies of the world and thus not taking into account the emergence of "non-states" run either by armed bandits or by organised crime.
The book does not deal adequately with the current state of the state. Given the debate around MNCs and their increasing expansion into areas which were the domain of the state this is an issue needing serious appraisal.
The depiction of this era as being a post US hegemonic era is also an area which will be contested by many writers, not least of all the Fukuyama's of the world.
Wallerstein concludes that the future depends onm how the following factors develop: * the extent to which there is loyalty to citizenship;
* the level of security through police order; the extent to which military orders are maintained; * level of welfare especially in relation to health and food distribution; * stability of religious institutions.

detailed, authoritative, advice.......2006-04-07
I enjoyed this book for its detailed advice from someone who has been in the trenches with a range of different inventions. It lives up to the promise of being step-by-step and it has insights you may not find in a typical book about inventions (Chinese holidays can cause delays! for example). You can also tell the author speaks from experience, like when he warns against wasting money on face-to-face meetings.
I interviewed Jon about his book on my Internet radio show EverydayWealth Radio, and he talked about how he just landed a contract with Disney for his laser shoe laces, so he definitely has the experience and credentials to back up what he teaches. There is also a checklist of "phase" activities that a new inventor will find useful.
This is an accessible book with solid advice.
Making ideas easy.......2006-02-11
this book was very informative and was an easy read. the real life experience that mr.capriola has is very helpful for anyone who is looking to cash in on an idea that they may have been kicking around for a while. i would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for the next step in turning their idea into something more.
Simple, clear steps for turning your ideas into commercialized products.......2006-02-04
I found the book easy to understand and read. It was laid out very well and was simple to find what I needed.
It was odd to find the last chapter was only 1 page. I need to know how to make money after I turned my idea into a product.
Give it a read, it will help you. It helped me.

A true entrepreneur's guide book........1999-06-10
I have owned this book since the early 90's and have benefitted greatly from its content. I found the application for a trademark inside and used it to successfully obtain my first trademark. I am purchasing a copy for my 13 year old nephew who has just opened an on-line clothing store. He too will use the trademark section to protect his product name and learn basic business principles.

With shortened business cycles, increased competition, and rapidly changing technologies, companies need to be more nimble than ever. They must narrow the gap between strategy formulation and operation execution to guarantee success. Expert advice from those who have used these strategies clearly explains how to integrate planning, budgeting, consolidation, and reporting into one cohesive management system.

Brian Hartlen is Senior Vice President of Marketing for Comshare, Incorporated, a leading provider of software that helps companies implement and execute strategy.
Dave King, PhD, is Comshare's Senior Vice President of Product Development and Chief Technology Officer.
Dennis Ganster is Chairman, President and CEO of Comshare, Inc.
Customer Reviews:
When the going gets tough..........2005-04-29
Unlike other reviewers I found this book to represent an interesting insight into where companies need to go if they are to remain competitive. Coveney's analysis is both deep and full of solid anecdotal evidence of the kind that executives should see as representing a genuine reality. The author doesn't gloss over the inherent difficulties attached to bridging the strategy gap and therein lies its weakness. While the book makes solid suggestions about the next step forward, it could have done more to recognise the real issues required to execute against its ideas. In this sense, the notion of CPM, which at one time seemed like a truly great idea, is likely to be relegated to management theory rather than practice.
Better to call it the Strategy Crap.......2004-03-31
I would expect that the authors of a book that purports to tell companies how to successfully execute their strategy would have a track record of doing the same with their own companies. Apparently that is not a safe assumption. The company that sponsored these authors was acquired last year for a fraction of what the company was worth five years earlier (interestingly enough, that was just about the time two of the authors became senior executives at the company). Save your money and skip over this 200 page piece of marketing material for a failed company.
Why Bother.......2003-06-28
The biggest problem with this book is the distance between the beginning and the end.
Aha! So thatýs what went wrong!ý.......2003-04-15
Have you ever wondered why, after having spent yet another grueling, general manager-mandated week of offsite strategic planning meetings, nothing has changed? The Strategy Gap delivers some real "Aha! So that's what went wrong!" insights I hadn't thought of before. The authors also propose a framework to help companies improve their performance management processes and technology systems and include real-life examples from companies who are putting these suggestions to work. This book is the start of a dialog that the executive team of every Iarge company should be having today. I found this book very useful and I think others will, too.
The Strategy Gap.......2003-04-08
Companies have spent decades and millions to take costs out of manufacturing and time out of transaction processing. Now, the authors of "The Strategy Gap" illustrate how companies and their CFOs can take inefficiencies out of planning, budgeting, and reporting processes, and improve corporate management effectiveness in a turbulent economy. I like this book (and the online Appendix!) because it acknowledges the complexities of improving business performance management but provides stepping stones and tools for overcoming them a little at a time.
