    Book Description

According to John Carroll, "You cease to be a club member when you sign onto the board. You become a kind of guardian, sharing responsibility for the club's success and for its future."

Although written with the private club in mind, the common sense solutions Carroll offers to those responsible for overseeing the running of an organization apply to a much broader audience. Carroll has distilled the complexities of leadership and governance into practical action. With thirty-five years of experience with boards of all types, including eighteen years of service on club boards (usually as president), he shows how a fine-tuned sense of "people skills," coupled with an understanding of how the club functions, creates an atmosphere where decisions can be made for the benefit of the club and all its members. He emphasizes that board members become guardians of their club's tradition and history while ensuring that the organization moves forward as times change.

The author guides you through the complex operations of a private club, all the while explaining how to deal gently with the complex human dynamics that make club board membership both invigorating and challenging. Along the way you are treated to an overview of the history of private clubs, first in Europe and then in America, including the development of golf and the changing face of modern-day clubs.

              Book Description

The purpose of this book is to focus on the contribution of one of the most prominent scholars in the strategy field, Michael Porter, from both a practitioner, that is Chief Executive Officer (CEO), perspective, and from a research perspective. Using such a dual perspective may improve the relevance of strategy research for the business community. Four leading chief executives, two from European multinationals (Royal Dutch/Shell Group and Unilever N.V.) and two from important Dutch public organizations (the Port of Rotterdam and the Ministry of Economic Affairs), were invited to reflect on Porter's contributions to four levels of analysis: (1) business level strategy, (2) corporate level strategy, (3) regional competitiveness and finally (4) national competitiveness. Against this background, the book is structured as follows: Chapters 2 to 8 deal with the four mentioned levels of analysis from a dual perspective - theoretical and managerial. The two final chapters aim to find out how Porter's theories are related to each other and whether and how the different levels of analysis can be connected.

              5 out of 5 stars Action.......2006-03-30

History of cinema as it stands has been basically changing over the last decade or so. Like all forms of history, the on-going quality of film history can affect how we regard the past. However with the DVD revolution and the like, more and more of such stuff as the Silent Era and foreign films is resurfacing, affecting how we view current cinema. For instance, it was a popular idea of the past that D.W. Griffith invented all of the techniques used towards how we edit movies today. With more and more pre-Griffith silents appearing, his height on that column is gradually decreasing...

This book is, in general, pretty up to date with the current times, ending roughly late nineties or so. Each section of film history has its own two-page spread, which is neat and VERY nice. Some of the choices are kind of surprising, but in a refreshing way, not a "what the--?" way.

I don't know much about how it would help someone who doesn't know that much about film, but it seems pretty user friendly and its conciseness prevents it from becoming too much a cineastes booklet. I don't agree with some of their opinions (I happen to like Abbott and Costello, I don't care what you say), but for a quick, "Okay so here's what's up" it is pretty well-made.

              5 out of 5 stars A Gem!.......2000-07-28

This little book is as much fun to read as watching one of your favorite films. Not only is it entertaining and informative, but it manages to be comprehensive and highly discriminating at the same time. The authors are fully aware of the "auteurs" who count, of the films that matter. I've read hundreds of film books, and I can guarantee that you won't find a better value.

                        Book Description

The Adam Smith Review provides a unique forum for interdisciplinary debate on all aspects of Adam Smith's works, his place in history, and the significance of his writings for the modern world. This will lead to a better understanding of Adam Smith, surely one of the most often misquoted theorists of all time. The second volume of this series includes inportant new contributions from Elias Khalil, Roberto Scazzieri and Jean-Pierre Dupuy.

"Online auctions are no fad, no fluke, no flash-in-the-pan venture," states Dennis L. Prince, author of AuctionWatch.com's Official Guide to Online Buying and Selling. Indeed, Forrester Research projects that the online-auction industry will grow from $4.5 billion in 1999 to a whopping $19 billion in 2003. For those who are eager to see what the fuss is all about, this book is a great place to start. It provides a ton of information for both buyers and sellers, with tips on auction formats (reserve auctions, Dutch auctions, and so on), authentication, spotting and avoiding fraud, setting up your auction business, creating effective auction listings, dealing with deadbeat bidders, and much more. Of course, there are numerous plugs for AuctionWatch.com's services--"AuctionWatch.com Has More" reminders appear on every other page or so. And, while the prose occasionally gets cheesy ("fast-paced and rapid-fire information is what awaits you in these pages," states Prince), the book is otherwise exceptionally well written and organized, and is a valuable guide for serious online bidders and auctioneers. Included on CD-ROM is AuctionWatch.com's Auction Manager Pro seller application. --Andy Boynton

                                    Book Description

Upon its initial launch in July 1998, AuctionWatch.com established itself as the auction-goers advocate, taking an impartial, in-depth, and occasionally hard-edged approach to the issues and events of the online auction arena. In this book, AuctionWatch.com and Dennis Prince, a regular contributor to AuctionWatch.com, provide you with tips and tactics that you can reference easily and apply without delay before, during, and after an auction. Each chapter of the book features a general introduction to the specific topic at hand and then proceeds to serve up a generous and appropriate number of easy-to-use tips laid out in a logical, linear progression. The Official AuctionWatch.com Tips and Techniques Guide will be of greatest immediate use to the seasoned auction-goer. Although it caters to online auction buyers, it also focuses on tips and tactics for medium and high volume sellers. It is presented in an easy-to-use, immediately applicable format that promotes more efficient and successful online auctioning for buyers and sellers.

5 out of 5 stars Get started selling with online auctions!.......2000-12-23

This book covers all the bases, inculding Terms of Service, Shipping policy, handling payments, dealing with non-paying bidders, and more! It would be an excellent tool for anyone that wants to get started with online auctions.

It is directed more towards the novice seller. Experienced sellers would most likely already know everything in this book. However, all buyers would benefit from reading this book because it would give them an idea of how a good seller should handle thier business.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific read for novice and expert alike!.......2000-10-18

Being a part time seller on eBay, I found this book rather helpful. It gave great tips on how to deal with comon issues like dealing with a non-paying bidder or a difficult seller. The offline bulk listing tool provided on the CD, is just awesome and definitely a time saver.

                                    5 out of 5 stars decent.......2000-10-18

I was an auction 'newbie', and this book helped me understand better how online auctions work. It covers things like how to avoid fraud and how to auction so that I make the most money. For example, I learned how to set up email support for all of my bidders, how to authenticate items I'm selling that may be valuable and how to earn a good reputation among bidders.

It helped me as a seller on a very basic level - I didn't know where to begin. The book really helped me create my auctions. For example: what I should include in my listing, the best shipping methods, and how to get an ongoing inventory, etc.

I would recommend this for people like me who want to learn and sell online through auctions - although the language can be a little kitschy at times, it's helpful.

This is a great propraganda book, with all roads leading back to AuctionWatch.com.

As a novice auction seller, I felt that AuctionWatch was directing this book to me if I were a 7 year-old child. It has a couple helpful segments but is a full-blown ad for the AuctionWatch website.

After reading it, well most of it anyway, I had to take a look for something a little more mature. I am still looking.

                                      Book Description

Based on a widely-publicized multimillion dollar study of over 3000 companies and government agencies, this easy-to-read, non-technical book examines and synthesizes the lessons of leading edge companies grappling with seven revolutionary IT changes. According to the authors, these changes have combined to create an entirely new paradigm for competitive information processing-now and for the future. Fascinating and provocative yet practical, this important book zeros in on changes such as the shift from proprietary to open systems, and stand-alone to integrated software applications. General managers and information managers alike will need to understand all these developments in order to lead the transition to a new way of doing business-and now they can profit from the lessons of actual companies who have succeeded-and failed-in this high stakes game.

5 out of 5 stars The Shift is Real.......1999-06-06

A classic! Frankly, if you're just now buying this book, you've already been swept up by the Paradigm Shift. So why should you buy this book? Because it will help you understand why the shift is happening and what should be done to prepare for it.

You can do nothing to stop the shift no more than you can stop a tidal wave. You can, however, refuse to change your paradigm as some have opted to do. In this case, good information will not erase the effects of a bad strategy.

Written in 1993, the shift Tapscott and Caston writes about is not over-not complete. But this book is complete and lacking nothing.

4 out of 5 stars Good but sometimes dry........1998-08-24

One selection from a required reading list for grad. school, initially looked quite interesting but since written in '93 it does not include much Internet technology. This book is rather good with an explanation of Era I and Era II computer technology and how companies need to transition but if you are dealing with present day Internet concepts this book is limited. I would suggest this book as a precursor to any other book which may get into the next Era of computing, dealing specifically with the Internet. Looking for ideas about reengineering an IT department, then this is a good start.

5 out of 5 stars This book explains all about mergers and joint ventures........1997-12-31

This book was required reading for a recent graduate course I took. The book explains where corporations, businesses, and governments are heading in the second era of computer technology. The explanation of the intergrated enterprise is the best I've ever read. This book will serve as the cornerstone of my future career development.
