4 out of 5 stars Brain-based Classroom Management.......2000-10-04

Robert Sylwester has applied his knowledge and expertise to assist educators in understanding the profound links between biology and classroom management. Recent brain research has provided new insights into the nature -- structural and developmental -- of the human brain. The new definition of the biological brain, although still in its infancy, has profound impllications for the ways educators deal with young people in their care. Professional educators know to exercise caution in applying research findings in biology to educational practice as, sometimes, the "logical" is not always the appropriate. Sylwester has carefully crafted his book to deal with the biological nature of the human brain/being and suggest the natural ecological environment for the nurturing of human thought. This book provides thoughtful connections between research and practice and challenges the reader to read, think, apply, and be sensitive to creating the optimum environment for individual success. It is a book that must be read more than once and should be a basis for discussion among administrators and teachers.

      5 out of 5 stars ISO 9000 Registration.......2000-02-10

My boss and I took on the ISO9000 registration project for my company with very little prior knowledge or experience with the ISO 9000 standard. The President of our company didn't think we could do it. There were two other failed attempts. Little did he know, we were armed with Richard Randall's no nonsence book. We scrapped the existing quality management system, and started from scratch. We certified 3 buildings with 250 employees in 4 months thanks to Richard Randall's book. Our ISO auditor has called our quality system one of the top 2% he has seen. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Helpful Tool for Quality System Development.......1999-09-24

I was assigned to shepherd a manufacturing plant to ISO-9001 registration. Randall's Practical Guide helped me understand the elements of the ISO-9000 standard, and translate them into a practical, functional quality system. Our plant passed the registration audit on the first try. As long as I'm in the quality field, Randall's Practical Guide will be one of my main references.

5 out of 5 stars Complete, practical guidance for implementation of ISO 9000!.......1999-03-17

If you are looking for a book that provides practical guidance and helpful examples for implementing an ISO 9000 Quality system... this is the book. We used it to develop our system and passed our certification audit the first time. We continue to use it as a reference for refining and improving our quality system.

5 out of 5 stars Detailed information in an easy to understand format........1998-05-02

This book gave me an overall detailed look at ISO 9000 in a quick to read, easy to understand format. A great place to start as well as a wonderful reference tool.

            Book Description

Coined in 1902, the term "standard of living" grew popular in early twentieth-century America, and though its exact definition remained ambiguous, it most often reflected the middle class and their material comfort. The term was not a precise measure of how people lived. Instead, it embodied the ideal of how middle-class Americans wanted to live. With increasing wages and the mass production of consumer goods, the standard of living became an important expression of the shared national culture that emerged in the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. But what material and social components constituted this standard? Who decided what they were and how they were to be promoted?

In Standard of Living, Marina Moskowitz explores these questions, focusing on the relationship between middle-class identity and material culture through four case studies. In one, she examines the incorporation of silverplate flatware into the daily rituals of American life. Mass production made this former luxury item affordable, while advertising, etiquette books, and home advice columns stressed its value as a family heirloom and confirmed its place in the middle-class dining room. Moskowitz then turns her attention to the bathroom and the proliferation of indoor sanitation, bathroom fixtures, and a hygiene industry equally interested in profits and public health. Home ownership contributed an essential element of this standard, and Moskowitz next charts the mail-order home industry, which sold not just kit houses but also the very idea of owning a home. Concluding with a look at zoning and urban planning as a means of fostering and protecting the standard of living for whole communities, this book offers important evidence of and fresh insights into the history of the American middle class.

This is an interesting part of the puzzle as far as the rise of fascism around the world. In the late 1920s and 1930s, powerful business interests in the U.S. became fascinating with the European tendency toward fascism. As you can read in the book THE PLOT TO SEIZE THE WHITE HOUSE, they saw FDR as heading toward socialism and linked up with extremist and rascist organizations to try to make certain that the government didn't interfere with business. Though that particular plot failed, it gives an inside look at what the stakes were and what the power elite were willing to do to win.

5 out of 5 stars ALL BECAME ACCEPTED IN THE 90's.......2006-10-29

This book came out in 1976 and was dismissed. By the 1990's all mainstream history accepts the charge that US bankers backed Hitler. When in 2003, Kevin Philips wrote his book on Dynasty and the Bush family, it was considered "old hat" When William Guy Carr made the same charge in the 1950's, it was also dismissed.

This is the book that started it all, because Sutton was a first rate scholar. BUT if you read ONLY this book, you will miss the whole story. Sutton wrote a book about Wall Street Banker backing Trotsky Et. Al. It got him drummed out of his job. But like this book, its all true and proven. His other books on the Fed help to fill in the picture of how the Bankers and men of Finanace work.

Other books to complete the picture:
Tragedy & Hope: A History of the World in Our Time by Carroll Quigley
Creature from Jekyll Island by G. Edward Griffin

I read this book here in Brazil. It is available free on internet. This book has many chapters talking about the money pumped by famous americans, to Hitler's gang.
Good work, but this book didn't showed you openly, that the same banks and companies, who gave money to Hitler, also gave money to Lenin or were big USSR's costumers before. To example, Ford Motor Company gave money to Hitler, but this happened after big business between USSR and Ford Motor Company. In fact, before Hitler took power, in 1933, if didn't gave money to Hitler's gang , you couldn't be a great USSR's costumer.

This is one of those books that make you want to buy all of the books in the bibliography just because the information is so shocking you want to investigate it for yourself. It is very interesting reading. Now, whether all of the conclusions the author draws are correct or not I don't know yet, but I'm working on it.

The capitalist establishment financed and helped create the Soviet Union. This same establishment also financed Nazi Germany. The clash between these two financed systems gave birth to the world order that we have today.
Once again, Sutton has brilliantly revealed a great historical truth about betrayal, and about orchestrating conflicts that make money and reshape the world order!

This book is very detailed. So much so that it is easy to get lost in the facts. However, the detail is needed to support the subject.

Mr. Sutton leaves the reader very angry with the "powers to be" for sacrificing the lives of so many in WWII for the sake of money. The reader discovers most of the horrors of this war could have been avoided.

He makes the danger of the Council of Foreign Relations more real.

This is a must read for everyone, especially if you are a believer in the Constitution of the U.S.

Be sure to read Appendix A.

This book examines the role of Eastern Establishment Old Money interests in the rise of the Nazi party and throughout WWII. The author argues that starting in the late 1920's, several large US-based corporations provided money, technical and other support to certain businesses and individuals in Germany, many of which were publicly known to be sympathetic to the Nazis. Initially, this was done as a way to obtain money. Specifically, Germany had to pay reparations to France, and one way Germany did this was to borrow from the US. This borrowing took the form of investment in Germany by large US corporations such as Ford Motor Company, Standard Oil, and General Electric. This investment took the form of capital and structural improvements such as the building of factories on German soil. The US corporations did this knowing that the US government would step in and pay of any defaulted loands. By the 1930s, these corporations continued their investment in Nazi Germany because the latter paid well. Unfortunately, this business continued into the 1940's and only ended with the end of WWII and the Nuremberg Trials.

The author presents his argument using many primary sources, such as bank statements, interviews of individuals involved in these business deals, US Congressional reports, and archived data from the companies involved. Evidence is also gleaned from secondary sources such as books written during and after WWII in which some of these investments are detailed. The author also points the blame at several branches of the US Federal Reserve, and other banks in the US, which supposedly provided monetary support to the either the Nazi party, or individuals affiliated with the Nazi party. All of this of course went unnoticed by the public at large during that time, though it was just under the rader within diplomatic circles.

The book reads like a great piece of investigative journalism, and this reviewer would consider it as such. The sourcing is great, the money trails are laid out with nice charts by the author, and contradictory evidence is addressed. All in all, a great book.

If you're just beginning your career or if you're stalled and wondering why you're not progressing up the ladder, you will find David E. Rye's basic book quite useful. His credo: Use self-promotion to attain professional promotion. Don't be misled by the gimmicky title. This is not a list of 1,00l ways to land that promotion. Instead, Rye builds his book around seven strategies that let everyone know you are management material. We [...] like one thing in particular - at pivotal points in each chapter, Rye recommends books that will take you further into the particular subject that chapter covers. This is a great idea, and more business books should refer onward this way. So, if you're just starting out or if you need a boost up the corporate ranks, this book will tell you how to climb, or at least tell you where to go to find out what you need to know.

3 out of 5 stars Nice idea, but where is the delivery ?.......2000-11-02

I read about a third of the book before giving up. I found it to be useful from the point of view of identifying and rating ones own skills, but it then went on about powerplays in the workplace. While this is an essential part of promotions, it is not a good long term strategy if the principle one wants to adopt is to be promoted on merit.

The book (or at least what I read) lacked any discussion on exercising the brain so that one can improve their methodology. Doing this would help one improve the quality of their work, and then achieve their promotional goals. Its just a different way of getting there but in a way that promotes ones confidence in their own work.

The overall theme of the book was to offer self improvement in many key areas, but it seemed to focus on how to respond to situations, not how to create them. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I should finish reading it.

In the work place, we all know that we are good and believe that is all that it takes to get ourselves promoted, automatically. Mr. Rye does an excellent job of pointing out that this may not happen unless you take action to promote yourself every day. He gives you well over 1,001 ways to do that. I use it as a daily reference book and it has already helped me get the promotion that I have always wanted. I'm already working on my next promotion, thanks to Mr. Rye's advice.

This book is plenty of examples and tips you can use to be promoted. Read it, it is a must read book if you want to scale in the corporate ladder.

I read, and ia have to give thanks to Mr. Rye for help me in this way. Its sure i will be promoted soon!!!!!!!

                        Book Description

Can a business accelerate in size and scope without speeding out of control? It's a critical question these days as organizations grapple with fast-breaking opportunities and commensurate growing pains. This book provides a proven game plan for sane, sustainable growth.

Aimed at independent businesses and high-growth corporate divisions alike, WARP-SPEED GROWTH shows how to focus on the resources that make or break fast growth--time, people, and money. It explains how managers can invest these limited resources in targeted ways to build new markets and exploit new technologies.

Rich in ready-to-use tools and reference charts, the book pays special attention to the urgent issue of finding and retaining good employees in a tight labor market. A unique index of challenges allows readers to search for solutions according to the range of real-life problems faced by fast-growth companies.

Meyer explains that "This book is about how to reach and sustain warp speed." If that is your business objective, Meyer provides a wealth of information, advice, checklists, graphics, strategies and tactics, flow charts, etc. Part One ("Foundations") introduces his basic concepts. Part Two ("Resources and Applications") focuses on growth and domination of markets, creation and leadership of new markets, management of human capital, the role of technology, and then -- in the 12th and final chapter -- "Warp-Speed Growth: Managing a Business Built for Speed."

In the final chapter, Meyer provides Chart 12-1, "Platform chart for sustainable warp-speed growth" which is first-rate. It correlates all of his key concepts previously discussed in Chapters 1-12 while suggesting a framework within which any organization can more effectively organize its own key information. "Where Do You Start?" Meyer suggests that you invest time to define success criteria and limit options. Next, consider creating and then dominating an entirely new market. Meanwhile, balance your resources as you formulate a strategic plan for their allocation. As that plan is implemented, be constantly alert to better ways in which to invest your resources. Finally, enjoy yourself: "The rewards of sustainable growth should be personal as well as corporate."

Perhaps your organization is currently experiencing little (if any) growth. Perhaps "sluggish" correctly describes its usual response to new opportunities, customer problems, a competitor's initiatives, changes in the marketplace, etc. Perhaps your organization needs to eliminate clutter, confusion, stagnation, and complacency. If any of this is true, Peter Meyer's book can be helpful. However, I presume to offer a few caveats:

                        1. The more serious the problems you seek to solve, the more difficult it will be to solve them. Hence the importance of strategic priorities.

                        2. Also, the worst problems have probably been caused by your own people, many of whom may still be around. Guess who will be most resistant to change?

                        3. "Warp-Speed Growth" must be prudent growth.

                        4. It is far easier to attain "Warp-Speed" but than it is to sustain it. Unless you and your organization are both willing and able to make a long-term commitment, forget it.

                        5. Finally, as Meyer repeatedly emphasizes, an organization's most valuable resources are its time, people, and money. They must be managed and conserved BY EVERYONE INVOLVED with meticulous care.

Of course, it is possible for an organization to attain and then sustain "Warp Speed" but be headed in the wrong direction. In ancient Rome, a traveler was often asked "Quo vadis?" Where are you going? Unless and until an organization has selected the correct destination and then remains on course, the speed at which it travels is irrelevant.

The book provides you all you need to know about the implementation of ERP and it'll greatly help build your background on this issue. The book is not about "how" to implement for a specific software but is about "why" and "what" you should know about implemenation. You need retain sufficient knowledge to help your company make wise decisions, rather than let consultants make decision for you and your company. I am a recent MBA graduate and I found this book is a great supplement to the area that I lack from my education.

5 out of 5 stars Great starting point.......2001-10-22

This is a great introduction to the world of ERP. After reading the book I bought copies for all the members of the team implementing the new ERP at my company. It helps you get a handle on the whole process from 20,000 ft, and makes the idea of totally changing the company not so scary. The only problem I had with the book is that the binding was terrible. The book fell apart on my first reading. But I liked it so much, I put in in a two ring binder.

If you have been asked to work on your company's ERP and are not sure what you got into, this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Learn How to Unveil the Mysteries Surrounding ERP.......2001-07-19

For years, companies and individuals alike have struggled to understand ERP concepts and systems. Many books have been written to assist the readers with everything from selecting an ERP solution to implementing the solution. None have addressed these issues as completely as this book.

The simple, concise, easy-to-understand way in which the author, Travis Anderegg, presents the information slowly `strips' away the layers of mystery and misunderstanding that have often been associated with ERP projects - small or large. Not only does a reader gain insight into the history of ERP but also is introduced to definitions and terminology associated with Enterprise Resource Planning.

It is a known fact that approximately 80% of all ERP projects fail. Many times, companies will blame the vendor (they misled us), the software (it does not fit our business), the consultant (they should have told us not to pick this package), etc. Often times, no one was `truly' at fault; it is a matter of not understanding how to plan, select, implement, maintain, and take ownership of an ERP system. This book covers all these areas from the initial decision to consider a company's ERP software strategy through planning, evaluation, decision, negotiation, implementation, and change management. Various critical success factors are identified throughout the chapters.

It also provides diagrams, charts, and questions to aid the reader in `gleaning' the pertinent points from the chapters. The book also points out the `pitfalls' and how to avoid making costly mistakes. The concepts presented in this book can be applied not only to ERP but also to other major IT procurements, such as HR/PR systems, CRM, and DPM. This book can also prepare individuals to pass the CIERP examination and be recognized as CIERP (certified implementer of enterprise resource planning) certified.

As the book shows ERP is very much a people system - not just software. The more educated people are, in regards to ERP, the more likely that a company will be successful. This book is an invaluable resource for anyone who is or will be involved with Enterprise Resource Planning:

                        · Business executives, senior decision makers, IT/IS managers, Department managers, and Project managers who are or will be in the market for an ERP solution

                        · Consultants, industry analysts, software vendors, and their staff who are in some way connected with the sales of ERP, as it provides insight into the buying cycle and the "contortions" that companies go through when purchasing this type of technology

                        · College and University level professors or students in Marketing, Information Systems/Technology and Project Management

This book is filled with all the knowledge anyone would need for preparing and successfully implementing Enterprise Resource Planning.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most complete and sensible guides I've read.......2001-05-21

The 20 chapters in this remarkable book make this a true A to Z implementation guide. The author starts with a clearly written intoduction to ERP and follows this with a detailed overview of concepts and design. The third chapter covers functional modules that need to be incorporated into ERP systems, which completes the foundation.

Chapters 4 through 8 cover the implemention details, beginning with life cycles and sequences, addressing project teams and transition strategies, and the nuts and bolts considerations of data conversion, prototyping and testing. The information in these chapters is a good basis for an implementation work breakdown structure.

I liked the chapters on organizational change management and consultants, which are critical success factors for implementing an ERP system. I also thought that the chapter on project planning sessions was a highlight of this book and something that anyone who is involved in managing the implementation needs to carefully read.

The remainder of the book covers developing a request for proposal and evaluating vendor responses, total quality management, ROI and other factors that are extremely important to ERP (or any system) implementation project.

Some of the things that make this book invaluable include: (1) clear writing and innovative use of graphics to display relationships, comparisons and workflow; (2) the fact that each chapter can stand alone as a focused and complete discussion of the topic covered, and (3) the common sense approach taken by the author.

I strongly recommend that this book be augmented by Scorecard System For World Class Enterprise Resource Management by the same author. These two books combined with provide you with all of the information you need to select and successfully implement an ERP system that fully meets your requirements.
