Standard of Living: The Measure of the Middle Class in Modern America
Marina Moskowitz Manufacturer: The Johns Hopkins University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0801879477 |
Book Description
Coined in 1902, the term "standard of living" grew popular in early twentieth-century America, and though its exact definition remained ambiguous, it most often reflected the middle class and their material comfort. The term was not a precise measure of how people lived. Instead, it embodied the ideal of how middle-class Americans wanted to live. With increasing wages and the mass production of consumer goods, the standard of living became an important expression of the shared national culture that emerged in the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. But what material and social components constituted this standard? Who decided what they were and how they were to be promoted?
In Standard of Living, Marina Moskowitz explores these questions, focusing on the relationship between middle-class identity and material culture through four case studies. In one, she examines the incorporation of silverplate flatware into the daily rituals of American life. Mass production made this former luxury item affordable, while advertising, etiquette books, and home advice columns stressed its value as a family heirloom and confirmed its place in the middle-class dining room. Moskowitz then turns her attention to the bathroom and the proliferation of indoor sanitation, bathroom fixtures, and a hygiene industry equally interested in profits and public health. Home ownership contributed an essential element of this standard, and Moskowitz next charts the mail-order home industry, which sold not just kit houses but also the very idea of owning a home. Concluding with a look at zoning and urban planning as a means of fostering and protecting the standard of living for whole communities, this book offers important evidence of and fresh insights into the history of the American middle class.

Mr. Sutton leaves the reader very angry with the "powers to be" for sacrificing the lives of so many in WWII for the sake of money. The reader discovers most of the horrors of this war could have been avoided.
He makes the danger of the Council of Foreign Relations more real.
This is a must read for everyone, especially if you are a believer in the Constitution of the U.S.

Nice idea, but where is the delivery ?.......2000-11-02
The book (or at least what I read) lacked any discussion on exercising the brain so that one can improve their methodology. Doing this would help one improve the quality of their work, and then achieve their promotional goals. Its just a different way of getting there but in a way that promotes ones confidence in their own work.
The overall theme of the book was to offer self improvement in many key areas, but it seemed to focus on how to respond to situations, not how to create them. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I should finish reading it.

Warp-Speed Growth: Managing the Fast-Track Business Without Sacrificing Time, People, and Money
Peter Meyer Manufacturer: AMACOM ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0814405266 |
Book Description
Can a business accelerate in size and scope without speeding out of control? It's a critical question these days as organizations grapple with fast-breaking opportunities and commensurate growing pains. This book provides a proven game plan for sane, sustainable growth.Aimed at independent businesses and high-growth corporate divisions alike, WARP-SPEED GROWTH shows how to focus on the resources that make or break fast growth--time, people, and money. It explains how managers can invest these limited resources in targeted ways to build new markets and exploit new technologies.
Rich in ready-to-use tools and reference charts, the book pays special attention to the urgent issue of finding and retaining good employees in a tight labor market. A unique index of challenges allows readers to search for solutions according to the range of real-life problems faced by fast-growth companies.

He's even better in person!.......2001-01-14
Prudent Velocity.......2000-05-17
In the final chapter, Meyer provides Chart 12-1, "Platform chart for sustainable warp-speed growth" which is first-rate. It correlates all of his key concepts previously discussed in Chapters 1-12 while suggesting a framework within which any organization can more effectively organize its own key information. "Where Do You Start?" Meyer suggests that you invest time to define success criteria and limit options. Next, consider creating and then dominating an entirely new market. Meanwhile, balance your resources as you formulate a strategic plan for their allocation. As that plan is implemented, be constantly alert to better ways in which to invest your resources. Finally, enjoy yourself: "The rewards of sustainable growth should be personal as well as corporate."
Perhaps your organization is currently experiencing little (if any) growth. Perhaps "sluggish" correctly describes its usual response to new opportunities, customer problems, a competitor's initiatives, changes in the marketplace, etc. Perhaps your organization needs to eliminate clutter, confusion, stagnation, and complacency. If any of this is true, Peter Meyer's book can be helpful. However, I presume to offer a few caveats:
1. The more serious the problems you seek to solve, the more difficult it will be to solve them. Hence the importance of strategic priorities.
2. Also, the worst problems have probably been caused by your own people, many of whom may still be around. Guess who will be most resistant to change?
3. "Warp-Speed Growth" must be prudent growth.
4. It is far easier to attain "Warp-Speed" but than it is to sustain it. Unless you and your organization are both willing and able to make a long-term commitment, forget it.
5. Finally, as Meyer repeatedly emphasizes, an organization's most valuable resources are its time, people, and money. They must be managed and conserved BY EVERYONE INVOLVED with meticulous care.
Of course, it is possible for an organization to attain and then sustain "Warp Speed" but be headed in the wrong direction. In ancient Rome, a traveler was often asked "Quo vadis?" Where are you going? Unless and until an organization has selected the correct destination and then remains on course, the speed at which it travels is irrelevant.

A great book for who are interested in ERP.......2002-02-09
Great starting point.......2001-10-22
If you have been asked to work on your company's ERP and are not sure what you got into, this is the book for you.
I wish if i can give this book 100 stars. Amazing Book............2001-07-31
Implementation details are cover in chapters 4 to 8, starting with life cycle, building your project team, prototype and testing and other important implementation issues. I think this is the best book ever written about ERP, don't waste your time searching for other books. You will find everything related to the ERP in "ERP: A-Z Implementer's Guide For Success"
Learn How to Unveil the Mysteries Surrounding ERP.......2001-07-19
The simple, concise, easy-to-understand way in which the author, Travis Anderegg, presents the information slowly `strips' away the layers of mystery and misunderstanding that have often been associated with ERP projects - small or large. Not only does a reader gain insight into the history of ERP but also is introduced to definitions and terminology associated with Enterprise Resource Planning.
It is a known fact that approximately 80% of all ERP projects fail. Many times, companies will blame the vendor (they misled us), the software (it does not fit our business), the consultant (they should have told us not to pick this package), etc. Often times, no one was `truly' at fault; it is a matter of not understanding how to plan, select, implement, maintain, and take ownership of an ERP system. This book covers all these areas from the initial decision to consider a company's ERP software strategy through planning, evaluation, decision, negotiation, implementation, and change management. Various critical success factors are identified throughout the chapters.
It also provides diagrams, charts, and questions to aid the reader in `gleaning' the pertinent points from the chapters. The book also points out the `pitfalls' and how to avoid making costly mistakes. The concepts presented in this book can be applied not only to ERP but also to other major IT procurements, such as HR/PR systems, CRM, and DPM. This book can also prepare individuals to pass the CIERP examination and be recognized as CIERP (certified implementer of enterprise resource planning) certified.
As the book shows ERP is very much a people system - not just software. The more educated people are, in regards to ERP, the more likely that a company will be successful. This book is an invaluable resource for anyone who is or will be involved with Enterprise Resource Planning:
· Business executives, senior decision makers, IT/IS managers, Department managers, and Project managers who are or will be in the market for an ERP solution
· Consultants, industry analysts, software vendors, and their staff who are in some way connected with the sales of ERP, as it provides insight into the buying cycle and the "contortions" that companies go through when purchasing this type of technology
· College and University level professors or students in Marketing, Information Systems/Technology and Project Management
This book is filled with all the knowledge anyone would need for preparing and successfully implementing Enterprise Resource Planning.
One of the most complete and sensible guides I've read.......2001-05-21
Chapters 4 through 8 cover the implemention details, beginning with life cycles and sequences, addressing project teams and transition strategies, and the nuts and bolts considerations of data conversion, prototyping and testing. The information in these chapters is a good basis for an implementation work breakdown structure.
I liked the chapters on organizational change management and consultants, which are critical success factors for implementing an ERP system. I also thought that the chapter on project planning sessions was a highlight of this book and something that anyone who is involved in managing the implementation needs to carefully read.
The remainder of the book covers developing a request for proposal and evaluating vendor responses, total quality management, ROI and other factors that are extremely important to ERP (or any system) implementation project.
Some of the things that make this book invaluable include: (1) clear writing and innovative use of graphics to display relationships, comparisons and workflow; (2) the fact that each chapter can stand alone as a focused and complete discussion of the topic covered, and (3) the common sense approach taken by the author.
I strongly recommend that this book be augmented by Scorecard System For World Class Enterprise Resource Management by the same author. These two books combined with provide you with all of the information you need to select and successfully implement an ERP system that fully meets your requirements.
