Janet Siskind goes back to the beginnings of industrial capitalism in the United States to better understand the formation of the country's capitalist culture. She studies the papers and letters of three generations of the Watkinson family. The stories of their lives demonstrate how merchants amassed the capital to become industrial entrepreneurs, organized factories and private corporations, and constructed philanthropic and cultural institutions. The author traces how "upper-class work," the everyday tasks of organizing and maintaining trade or a system of production, shaped the family's experience and New England's culture. The result is an intimate story of social class and capitalism.

The reader comes to know several members of this enterprising family, who emigrated from England in 1795. The young women married merchants; their brothers prospered as merchants in Connecticut's West Indian trade. The author shows how their account books, which balanced the imports of rum with the exports of horses, obscured the system of slavery that created their wealth.

After the War of 1812, the Watkinsons and their nephews the Collinses turned from trade to manufacturing textiles and axes. Their letters paint a vivid picture of the difficult process of shaping farmers' sons into a disciplined workforce and entrepreneurs into industrial and financial capitalists. Siskind skillfully blends social history and cultural anthropology to provide context for the engaging narrative of the Watkinsons' lives.

Desktop Database Marketing is a primer on using current desktop technology to market your business in all forms. Doesn't Look OK.......2002-01-16

Reading only sample pages, things look pretty bad.
Explanations and principles, checklists are very formal even banal, not correct enough as well. Anybody could state such abstractions without willingness to go in depth.
It looks that most of attention is dedicated to HVAC. Although HVAC optimization influence modern facilities' operation costs very much, I think that facility managers need broad approach and balanced covering of themes in their day-to-day reference manual.
If readers need to explore HVAC themes, they should investigate specialized books. As experienced HVAC engineer, I consider quality of HVAC text in this book poor.
It seems that this book is not enhanced with personal "hands-on" experience, which is absolutely necessary in this field. Facility managers need authoritative "nuts-and-bolts" to improve their work.

I actually interested in "Facility Managers Operation & Maintenance Handbook", but "Facility Manager's Portable Handbook" is cheaper and it looks like not so much different. This book is both an excellent overview and a detailed analysis of the methods and issues involved with Bandwidth Management. This is all you will need to understand this complex and broad subject. It is highly recommended.

Don't be taken in by the "LDAP" on the cover. The sections on the use of directories for maintaining QoS policy appear to have been cobbled from other sources, are spotty in the coverage and at least a year or so old. This book will provide a basic introduction to several of the different ways of managing bandwidth, but certainly won't help with deployment of directory-enabled network policy management or services.

Lots of good ideas but a bit vague........1998-08-24

This is a good book for the reader who already knows something about information management. It is a bit vague and doesn't have examples to clarify issues. There is supposed to be an instructor's manual called "Teaching and learning assistance" by the same authors to go with this book. Although I haven't seen the manual, I think this book definitely needs a help manual. I also find it physically difficult to read as the print is a bit faint. Otherwise it is a worthwhile read.
