Book Description
Foreword by Richard W. Riley, Former U.S. Secretary of Education
Praise for the first edition:
"Inspirational! This book redefines what leadership is and how it should be practiced in schools. Lively, personal, emotional at times, and in the end, uplifting."
Thomas J. Sergiovanni
, Lillian Radford Professor of Education
Trinity University, San Antonio, TX
Take an introspective, reflective journey into yourself--the first step toward becoming a moral, ethical leader!
Building upon his successful first edition, noted author and speaker, Leonard O. Pellicer, takes the reader on a deeply emotional and touching journey to the human side of leadership. While discussing the importance of "serving" others,
Caring Enough to Lead, Second Edition is more than a "how to" manual. It is a collection of ideas and understandings illustrating vital concepts of leadership through a series of questions, short vignettes, selected quotations, and personal stories. Reflective pieces at the end of each chapter provide powerful opportunities to assess what it truly means to be a leader.
Several critical questions will help you determine for yourself:
- Why it’s better to know some of the questions rather than all the answers
- What it means to be a leader
- What you really care about
- What it means to be responsible
- Why you are a professional educator
- If you care enough to do the "little things"
- How a school can be transformed by your leadership
Whether you are an administrator, principal, teacher, counselor, or board member, this second edition is for those of you who feel a deep responsibility to provide caring and effective leadership in whatever role you may find yourself serving.
Customer Reviews:
Flo Ramsey...PE Person.......2005-12-06
I really enjoyed reading about Dr. Pellicer's quest for leadership. I was inspired by his witty stories and reflective questions. Through this journey I realized that leadership is who we are.
Inspiring Book for teachers and educators.......2005-12-05
This book provides the reader with anecdotes, stories, and reflections on the qualities and traits of effective leadership. Rather than boring the reader with staid theories and lectures, Mr. Pellicer provides an interesting insight through entertaining stories and thought-provoking questions. This book will definitely inspire you!
Perfect reflection book for educators and principals.......2005-11-22
Dr. Pellicer's book compels the reader to reflect on his or her practice in a format that is easy to read and enjoyable. The stories will make the reader laugh and cry and, most important, examine her own behavior and motivations at school. The author's expertise in education is obvious, but his message is not dogmatic. He encourages the reader to think through the use of his education-based stories and gently prods the teacher or administrator to think about his/her own strengths and weaknesses. Some of the stories will stay with an educator for a long time, and I fully believe that this was the author's intended purpose.
An Interesting Insight Into Leadership.......2003-12-02
Leonard Pellicer's Caring Enough to Lead contains many interesting and thoughtful reflections to become a successful leader. He uses reflections at the end of each chapter to let the reader think about how they lead or how they can become a good leader. The reflections were very useful to me to see what kind of a leader I hope to become.
I particularly enjoyed his anecdotes about various happenings in his life. They give the book the feeling of someone who actually cares about what he is righting about rather than just someone who is writing just to get a paycheck. He stresses that caring is the most important thing to becoming a successful leader and it shows in the book.
However, if you are looking for a book that tells you exactly how to become a good and moral leader, this may not be the book for you. This book gives you the tools you will need to find out what kind of a leader you are and at the same time steers the reader in the direction he or she would need to go to become a good leader.
I am currently studying to be a teacher and I feel that this book is a good resource for any future or current teacher or administrator. It gives the reader a chance to critically look at how he or she leads and can become a better leader by making the right questions are being asked. By asking yourself a few key questions and knowing what those answers mean to being a good leader can help the reader become a much better and more caring leader.
Pellicer's personal experiences are what make this book work. His extensive experience in the education field shows that he knows what it takes to be a caring leader. I that Pellicer's reflective thought process will help me to become a better leader in the education field and ultimately make me a better teacher in the long run.
This is an awesome book!.......2003-05-06
I am not writing this review to seek favors or to boost the book sales of one of my colleagues. I just happen to be blessed with the profound honor and pleasure of having worked under the author's guiding hand for the past two years. I can tell you from firsthand experience that Leonard Pellicer "walks his talk". He is a touching, masterful, giving, caring person, and far and away the most wonderful leader with whom I have ever had the pleasure of learning from. He has created an academic workplace completely committed to the full realization of its vision statement. The result is that I work with the most caring and loving group of people imaginable. It just doesn't get any better than this.
"Caring Enough to Lead" is a fantastic book. I love how he illustrates the path of the heart with simple yet profound personal life examples. Such a technique can easily go sideways with self-absorption, but not in this case. One of the most delightful features of the book is my certainty that the chapters which speak the loudest to me today (among them: "some of the questions", "what I believe about people", "water buffalo", "to be a teacher", "successful schools", "sharing power", and "professional educator") will no doubt change along with my need to respond to a given difficulty or circumstance in the future. To wit, some of its struck me as a gem that I need to realize at this time, and other sections will no doubt simmer for a while and then resurface when I most need their wisdom.
Overall, the book rings in my heart very much the way "The Holy Man" by Susan Trotter (my favorite book of all time) did. Exactly the opposite of technical and boring, it is a refreshingly delightful and interesting read. I have never before stopped to actually DO the suggested exercises in books, but I found myself actually doing that with this one, because what I gleaned from each chapter was simply too valuable to let pass by without trying to apply its lessons to my life.
This book is a treasure find in a field of tired and rehashed ideas. I realize that it's dangerous to wish for things other than they are, but I believe it would be a much better world if more leaders had Leonard's heartfelt leadership style. Reading this book provides a solid step in that direction.

Customer Reviews:
Managers Cookbook.......2007-10-01
This is a helpful book for helping me deal with staff. I have learned good skills that has helped me with being with a supervisor. It is easy to read and understand.
Comprehensive translation and interpretation!!! .......2007-02-20
For a first time reader, this book provides a good introduction to the concepts in the Art of War by Sun Tzu.
This book briefly mentions the differences between western and eastern strategy. The book "On War" by Carl von Clausewitz is believed to be the foundation of much of the Western strategy. Clausewitzian theory concentrates on the big battle as the way to win. His work expresses so many ideas that it can be used to justify any positions and in addition, it is filled with convoluted sentences and difficult to read. On the other hand, the eastern strategist Sun Tzu's the Art of War is a masterpiece of simplicity.
The fundamental principles of strategy are the same for all managers at all times and situations. Only the tactics are likely to change. Strategy is best defined as "doing the right thing" while tactics is "doing things right". The dividing line between tactics and strategy is indicated by the point of contact. Therefore, strategy stops at the border in war and at the HQ door in business, whereas tactics begins with contact with the enemies in war and customers in business.
The book is divided into 2 parts.
Part 1 is divided into 13 chapters like the original work, sharing the same title as the original translation. Each chapter provides the correlation of the teachings to the present business world, ending with examples on actual business scenarios.
Part 2 provides a useful guide to practical applications. The practical applications are cited by real persons working in various industries, giving examples of key Sun Tzu concepts in which they have applied in their line of work.
Finally the book ends with an outline of Sun Tzu's key concepts to aid in applications and which also serves to provide a good summary of the entire book Sun Tzu's The Art of War.
Even More Relevant and Valuable Today.......2006-02-07
The review which follows is of a book which I read when it was first published in 1999. I recently re-read it. Here are my reactions to it seven years later.
Many of those who read my reviews are owners/CEOs of small businesses. Whenever I receive an e-mail from one of them asking me to recommend books which will be of greatest practical value, I always include a choice of R.L. Wing's or Samuel B. Griffith's translation of Sun Tzu's The Art of War on the list. Occasionally, someone who has read The Art of War asks for a recommendation of related sources. There are several to select from, notably The Art of Business: In the Footsteps of Giants written by Raymond T. Yeh and Stephanie H. Yeh; two books by Mark R. McNeilly, Sun Tzu and the Art of Business and Sun Tzu and the Art of Modern Warfare; and this one, which I read when it was first published and only now am I reviewing. Here are a few of the reasons for my rating of Michaelson's book.
First, Michaelson has selected and then discusses 50 "strategic rules" suggested by Sun Tzu's classic. To facilitate and support periodic review, the key concepts are summarized on pages 169-190 and range from" Thoroughly Assess Conditions" to "Practice Counterintelligence." Don't expect any head-snappers. The greatest value of The Art of War is that it helps, indeed insists that its reader think strategically. (Please keep in mind that it was written 2,500 years ago.) Michaelson fully understands that. His purpose is to apply ancient concepts to major perils and opportunities in the contemporary.
I also appreciate Michaelson's provision of several reader-friendly sections such as those in which he quotes a passage from The Art of War and then offers a "translation" of its relevance, followed by a "Manager's Commentary" in which he recommends appropriate application of Sun Tzu's insight. Throughout his rigorous and eloquent narrative, Michaelson also includes checklists such as the one found on page 114 when he identifies "key ingredients" which are common to all growing organizations: customer focus by creating systems that deliver perceived value; selection (i.e. hiring) of decent as well as competent people; and then training them with highly-interactive learning sessions which are both formal and on-the-job.
Finally, I hold this book in high regard because Michaelson also includes 13 brief but insightful commentaries by senior-level executives who share their own real-world experiences. Fort example, Domminick Attanosio (senior advisor, Young and Partners, LLC) explains how a public pharmaceutical company developed a new delivery system to adjustable dosing of oral medications by following each of several of Sun Tzu's basic principles:
"Know the enemy and know yourself, and you can fight 100 battles with no danger of defeat."
"Travel where there is no enemy."
"Pursue one's strategic designs to overawe the enemy."
"An army can be raised only when there is money at hand."
"The general whose only interest is to protect his people and promote the best interests of his sovereign is the precious jewel of the state."
"The enlightened rulers must deliberate upon the plans to go to battle, and good generals generally execute them,."
"To subdue the enemy without fighting is the supreme excellence."
Obviously, it would be a fool's errand to manage by slogans but even more foolish to ignore what can be learned from sources such as Sun Tzu's The Art of War. The knowledge these sources provide can -- and should -- guide and inform the careful selection and then effective execution of appropriate strategies and tactics. Credit Michaelson with a thorough understanding and brilliant interpretation of what can be learned from arguably the world's first management consultant.
Bravo!
Sun Tzu for today.......2005-07-29
If you liked the Art of War you will like this. I really liked the summary of all the rules at the end of the book.
Very relevant modern adaptation.......2005-05-13
I will try to to keep this short. All the other 5 stars point out the merits for this book. In short it gives modern insights to a very important book on strategy. Shows that true wisdom rings true for thousands of years.
The criticisms that I have read on this book are true but are not really fair. This book is not designed to be a play by play guide for managers that have no insights of their own. If this book doesn't generate ideas for you without spoon-feeding examples and how to's then you will never lead a winning organization. You are a sheep not a shepherd.
If one understands Sun Tzu, if not a master as no one really is, they would realize that any example given automatically is rendered useless. A widely publicized tactic lacks the element of surprise, rule #19.
My criticism of it is that he doesn't understand history that well, at least the Revolutionary War. He cites things that are common misperceptions about that war to support his arguments. The rebels always employed unconventional tactics not just towards the end. Also almost all of the battles were fought conventionally and on open fields. This is contrary to what the author writes. Stick to business examples.
Also citing Tyco CEO Dennis Kozlowski does little to advance his point. Who could have known and I'm sure any future editions will strike this reference.
This book isn't perfect but if you are a shepherd and can generate ideas on your own then this book is for you. It will help give fire to the sparks you already have. Quit wasting time and order it. Assume your competitor has already read it and is using its insights against you.

Book Description
This volume contains the papers presented at the Third Quinquennial Conference on Ukrainian Economics, held at the Ukrainian Research Institute, Harvard University, in 1985. This collection of fourteen previously unpublished essays deals with the one thousand years of Ukrainian economic history prior to the outbreak of the First World War. Contributors include Daniel Kaiser, Thomas Noonan, Stephen Velychenko, Bohdan Krawchenko, Martin Spechler, and many others.
The essays are divided chronologically into three parts, covering the periods of Kyivan Rus', the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and the nineteenth century. They are not intended to give a comprehensive survey of Ukrainian economic history but primarily to deal with important economic issues of particular periods. The problem of the orientation of the Kyivan Principality with regard to the nomadic East and Byzantine South is discussed in the first part. The authors of the volume's second part analyze economic ties with the West and Muscovy during the Cossack period and afterwards. The contributions in the third part deal with the important problems of economic development during Ukraine's rebirth as a modern nation in the nineteenth century. Issues discussed include: population change, industrialization, relations with the Russian imperial metropolis, urbanization, and the development of the southern and western regions (within the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy). The introductory essay offers a proposal for a periodization scheme of Ukrainian economic history.
The authors are recognized specialists on Ukrainian history from the United States, Canada, and Ukraine.

Brilliant.......2002-10-25
This book not only maps out the territory of advanced Capitalism, but it provides a political philosophy that is a "Negri beyond Negri". Although Dyer-Witheford draws a lot of ideas from Antonio Negri and the Italian autonomist tradition, he surpasses them with his excellent analysis of postindustrial capital. Moreover, Negri's most recent work (with Michael Hardt), "Empire" falls short of Dyer-Witheford's "Cyber-Marx" which is more realistic, practical, concise and defensible than Negri has ever been. This book is worth buying by anyone interested in the realities of technological society.
Marxism for right now.......2002-02-16
This is a masterwork; a unique and nearly comprehensive view of Marxism appropriate for our times. Nick avoids dogma and certainly eliminates all vestiges of teleology. The absence of dogma is indicated by the wide variety of sources that are tied together with a strong square knot. Optimistic yet realistic, this book is a must for all progressives and all who give a damn about human and Earth survival. I would have liked to see more on neutralizing militarism; if he has ideas on this I hope he writes them up.
Addendum 12/6/02 -- Why aren't more people discussing this superb work?
Marx Revisited.......2002-01-03
I had an urge to go back to readings on politics after September 11th tragedy... So I bought a few books from Amazon and Autonomedia. Spent Christmas time reading them with an almost furiouos enthusiasm!
As a 49 years artist, european and ex-trotskyst wandering along the late capitalism pathway of illusions, I found this book an absolute must for anyone trying to do a map of the present state of humankind.
It is most probably the best portrait of post-marxism and neo-marxism done in the last twenty years. Systematic, well balanced, straithforward, wit and very very humanistic.
I think that this canadian leftist - Nick Dyer-Witheford - deserves an urgent translation of his book to french, spanish, portuguese and chinese as soon as possible...
Circuits of struggle - all fightback links up.......2001-10-30
This superb book not only takes elements of Marx's legacy and makes them contemporary in a prose embraced enthusiastically by undergraduates. It also lists four sites of struggle within a visions of 'circuits of struggle.' These four are
1. struggle at the site of production (usually waged work)
2. struggle at the point of reproduction (women producing people and labour power, students being educated...);
3. struggle at the interface of nature and people (eco-feminism, water, air, forests and indigenous knowledge, seeds, terminator biotechnology and the like); and finally
4. struggle at the site of consumption (GMO foods, labels on foods, carcinogens and war-related poisoning of people and the ecosystem and the like).
The power of this complex analysis of peoples' resistance to corporate profit making is situated in its capacity to unite the thousands of different (formerly called 'single-issue') struggles into one international movement to 'globalize from below' or to build a new 'subsistence society' worldwide centred on the satisfaction of human and ecological needs rather than the production of profit or as John McMurtry (see his forthcoming Value Wars, Pluto, 2002, or 'the Cancer Stage of Capitalism, Pluto, London, 1999)calls 'money demand.'
This book is, for me, one of the top ten pieces of brilliant, committed scholarship, ever. It is in the tradition of both CLR James and the Italian autonomistas, notably Antonio Negri and Maria Rosa Dalla Costa.
A surgical-like analysis of late capitalism.......2001-08-19
"Cyber Marx" by Nick Dyer-Whitheford is a brilliant Marxist analysis and critique of the economy of technology in late capitalism. The author shreds the techno-booster utopian visions of theorists such as Alvin Toffler to expose today's information society for what it really represents: namely, a post-Fordist attempt by capital to deepen and extend its dominance, control and repression as never before.
Mr. Dyer-Witheford presents evidence that the information infrastructure used to coordinate global production and consumption chains might also provide subversive opportunities to the disenfranchised, who may ultimately choose to develop new social structures existing beyond the control of capital. In this manner, the author believes that the surplus value produced by machines could be used to institute a guaranteed wage, a communication commons, and a revived democracy.
On the other hand, Mr. Dyer-Witheford acknowledges that technology might be used by fascists to spread hate and intolerance, and cautions us that this possibility should not be taken lightly. As the social costs of capitalism increase for ever larger segments of the world's population, it is possible that an under-educated public may be led by self-serving leaders to turn violently against themselves. The author's optimism that people will choose to strive for peace and justice, however, distinguishes his work from the pessimistic tone that sometimes suffuses the work of other postmodernists and contemporary European Marxist scholars.
Mr. Dyer-Whitheford's cogent analysis provides clarity to readers seeking insight into the dynamics of post-industrial society. Let's hope that this important work gets the attention it deserves and provides guidance to those who may be wish to build a more humane and just society. Highly recommended.
