"Kate Thomsen’s book is a must-read for every educator. She has synthesized the wisdom from educational megatrends of the past decades and shows us how to foster healthier, safer, and more resilient student by integrating these major learnings into what we already do. I love this book!"

Create a nurturing, supportive environment where students can nurture their own resiliency!

What makes one student overcome obstacles, while another cannot seem to cope? What makes one student rise above difficult circumstances, while another flounders? Identifying the attributes of the resilient student is the first step in building resiliency in all of your students. This resource provides busy teachers with practical, concrete applications and activities for reframing the actions of even the most at-risk students, changing the focus from problems to solutions, from deficits to strengths.

Building Resilient Students connects resiliency to five major educational megatrends—character education, multiple intelligences, emotional intelligence, service learning, and violence prevention—and gives educators proven strategies for incorporating the "resiliency attitude" into everyday classroom experiences.

Thomsen identifies a myriad of easy, yet innovative applications through six resiliency-building strategies:

There are seeds of resiliency in all of us. We can nurture those seeds in all students, giving them the life skills they need to become competent, healthy adults.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Useful, readable how to without being boring!.......2002-11-06

This book is deceptive-it's an easy read that you'll find extremely helpful and empowering. Ms. Thomsen has taken all the research for various 'new' teaching techniques and made them relevant to today's overworked and overwhelmed teachers, helping them to help their students become better people. As she indicates, stable and emotionally healthy students can become involved and capable students, who can then learn. The concept is not new, but the easy to read format shows how to make it applicable in every classroom.
Teachers will find themselves saying "oh, I do that" and "oh, that would be easy to incorporate in my classroom" over and over as they read this book. Buy it for that favorite teacher- -and for the parent who may be struggling with their own child's inability to connect effectively with adults and teachers and others. Read her dandelion story, and see how many people you know who fall in to it.
    Lovely book-a great find!

        Book Description

By blasting apart outdated perceptions and focusing on new value-adding strategies, Measures of Quality & High Performance explains the operating secrets of top companies.

Based on extensive research with 19 organizations that have received the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the book explains how each broke free of old strangleholds to achieve breakthrough results. And it contains new findings, such as: increasing quality actually drives overall expenses down; small, continuous improvements (kaizen) are no longer adequate for reaching world-class status; and reducing the time to do things actually increases quality.

The book helps readers assess their own companies by asking three crucial questions: Has your organization recognized the new methods that are replacing old habits? Does it employ customer value-added concepts? Is training a key element in the overall strategy?

          Book Description

`I found myself questioning my current views on globalization and international competition. In so doing, I have come to a fuller understanding of the dynamics of the process and have enjoyed a unique view into the minds of the decision makers' - Organization Studies

`This book is an unusual and valuable addition to the literatures of international business' - International Business Review

`The first interesting feature of this study is the selection of industries.... The book provides some valuable insight into the geographic distribution of the world in the mind of the chief executives… a matter of interest not only to industry and academia, but also to policy makers.... The classification of international strategies deducted from the interview data is another contribution that book makes.... The book has achieved its main goal of linking theory and practical experience [and] provides interesting reading.... The book translates the logic of the industry world into a nice theory leaving it up to the reader to accept or reject the accompanying business ethics and values' - Prometheus

`A highly effective analysis of the changing patterns of competition viewed from an international perspective. There is a plethora of books on globalization and internationalization of industries, but most are long on words and speculation, but short on hard evidence and perspective. Here, the approach of the authors is not to argue that the world is becoming more (or less) global, but to provide a valuable insight into just how these forces are shaping industries, whether managers can influence these forces and what they might mean for those involve'- Charles Baden-Fuller, City Business School, Series Editor

This book uses in-depth current data from a range of international business, and provides an important new framework for understanding international competitive systems and formulating international business strategy.

            Book Description

The Industrial Revolution produced the modern world, a world of increased affluence, longevity, urbanization, and travel. This book illuminates how the great surge of economic growth that determined these changes was not expected, and often went unnoticed. The author begins by discussing the kind of substantial economic growth that was predicted at the time, and goes on to cover the growth that was unexpected. The link between these two types of growth is presented in the context of English economic growth between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries and leads the author to challenge convincingly the conventional view that the Industrial Revolution was a simple, unitary, and consciously progressive phenomenon. .E.A. Wrigley is Senior Research Fellow, All Souls College, Oxford University. He is the author of several books, among them, Population and History (McGraw-Hill) The Population History of England (CUP) and Continuity, Chance and Change (CUP).

              Book Description

The essays in this volume describe, analyze and compare the achievements and the failures of societies that adopted market-based economies within a democratic polity after a long period of communist rule (Russia and Eastern Europe) or military authoritarianism (Latin America). Together, they also trace the rocky course of liberal economic policies over the whole twentieth century.

Area experts from various disciplines seek to establish the extent to which the historical experience of the several countries explains successful transitions as well as the less successful efforts to adapt institutions to the needs of a market economy. The papers further show the dilemmas faced in both Eastern Europe and Latin America in reconciling the efficiency benefits of market economies and the need to achieve or maintain socially acceptable patterns of income distribution among the strata of income receivers. In addition to the essays themselves, comments are provided to further explore specific issues.

Researchers and students in economics, economic history, political science and regional studies, and others interested in the economics of transition to a market system will find this comprehensive collection an invaluable resource.

                Book Description

A comprehensive handbook for advertising and marketing managers, this volume shows how advertisers can effectively control agency costs without sacrificing creativity. Ron Harding profiles companies that have effectively enforced accountability on their agencies and demonstrates proven internal systems for controlling the advertising process--and its associated costs--from the initial spending plan through the final examination of actual expenditures. He also offers a pragmatic discussion of the procedures, timetables, and contracts managers need to put in place to ensure that all sectors of the agency--account, creative, legal, production, and business affairs--act in the best interest of their client and at the highest levels of their capability. All major categories of spending receive thorough coverage: television, print, talent, and media. After an introduction which highlights the problems of runaway costs and mismanagement that plague many advertisers today, Harding presents a step-by-step guide to controlling advertising expenditures. Among the topics addressed are: how to create realistic spending plans and make them strict buying guides for the agency; how to spot successful advertising; how to make creative groups accountable; how to run a successful copy meeting; how to stop cost overruns in television and print; and how to streamline and strengthen the brand management system. Harding fully reviews how to cut costs at each stage--from the project initiation form, through copy and storyboards, to editing and final production. Written in clear, conversational style, the book focuses throughout on a pragmatic approach to advertising management while recognizing the central importance of creativity. In fact, Harding argues, by understanding the creative-cost equation and how to manipulate its variables, advertisers will necessarily reap the benefits of better advertising.

                  Book Description

The vision of the MIT Process Handbook Project is the creation of a systematic and powerful method of organizing and sharing business knowledge. Organizing Business Knowledge: The MIT Process Handbook presents the key findings of a multidisciplinary research group at MIT’s Sloan School of Management that has worked for over a decade to lay the foundation for just such a comprehensive system. It does so by focusing on the process itself. The book proposes a set of fundamental concepts to guide analysis and a classification framework for organizing knowledge, and describes the publicly available online knowledge base developed by the project, which includes a set of representative templates and specific case examples as well as a set of software tools for organizing and sharing knowledge.

Organizing Business Knowledge: The MIT Process Handbook includes twenty-one papers, some previously published and some appearing for the first time, that have come out of this decade-long project. Together, they form a comprehensive and coherent vision of the future of knowledge organization. The Handbook is organized into five parts: an introduction and overview; the presentation of a theory of process representation; "Contents of the Process Repository"; "Process Repository Uses," which gives examples from both research and practice; and a conclusion, which maps the progress so far and the challenges ahead.

                                Book Description

This is a book about bubble prices, and their consequences, in the timber industry of the Pacific Northwest from 1979-1984. Bubble prices--unusual and rapid rises (and eventual drops) in the prices of a commodity--have been of theoretical interest to economists for many years. This study examines the unusual movements in the price of federal timber and the subsequent recession in the Northwest when timber buyers delayed harvests in order to postpone the realization of their losses on the contracts. Mattey argues that it was not so much the actions of the Federal Reserve, which had been widely blamed for the crisis, but rather the actions of the buyers themselves that caused the recession.

                                Amazon.com

A few years ago, everybody with a product to sell got a dose of the same religion. In marketing circles, it's called customer relationship management, or CRM. In your house, it's probably called "How the hell did I end up with all these plastic cards in my wallet?" Your grocery store offers you special discounts if you bring one of those cards to wave over the scanner. If you travel, you probably have "loyalty cards" from airlines, hotel chains, and car-rental companies. All these discount and loyalty programs allow the companies to built substantial databases about you--your preferences and patterns--but they also depend on you to do the work, to lug those plastic cards around, keep track of your points and miles, and so on.

There are better ways to build customer relationships, argues Newell. He caused a stir in 1997 with The New Rules of Marketing, and now with Loyalty.com, he wants to cause another one by declaring that most companies attempting to create customer loyalty are going about it all wrong. In fact, he shows that areas with the most aggressive loyalty programs tend to have the least loyal customers--and vice versa. Today, writes Newell, the Internet has made market research cheaper and faster than ever. Software can be designed to predict what a customer will want before she knows she wants it, and the company can go straight to that particular customer to suggest she buy that particular product, rather than showering millions of potential customers with hundreds of product solicitations. It's not easy, and pitfalls abound, as Loyalty.com shows (the issue of customer privacy alone will be the subject of endless legislation in coming years). But the company that masters customer relations will be rewarded with both loyalty and profits. --Lou Schuler

                                5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2001-04-18

This book is a delightful result of Frederick Newell's recent indoctrination in marketing through the World Wide Web. Newell is an internationally acclaimed professional and part-time academic who specializes in database marketing. He admits in his preface that he's a bit of a "geezer" - because his 1997 book, The New Rules of Marketing, lacked a Web component, which undermined its newness. In an effort to rectify that, he reconciles the impressive database-mining and customer relationship concepts from his earlier book with today's rapidly changing cyber-marketing theories and practices. Newell clearly is excited by what he has belatedly learned about the Web's potential, and provides on-target case studies to support his points. We [...] recommend this book to all marketers - especially to those in retail. Those who are new to Web business will find it particularly useful.

3 out of 5 stars Good but can improve..........2001-03-10

Excellent to understand insides on internet crm and loyalty. The message is: understand your customer by it self, dont give them disccounts.. give them good service, give them what they want. Lots of examples will help you reconfirm your pre-done thoughts.

Liked the valuation chapter.. not to deep (lack of examples) but perfect for a good start.

The case studies are very interesting but they do not give you the final flavor : "What happened? does this CRM initiative was really successful??"

I think you have to buy this book: it really can help you find a path.

                                5 out of 5 stars Loyalty.com.......2001-02-23

This book is a must have for all business professionals. Newell brightly explains the fundamentals of CRM in an eye opening way, giving the reader lots of valuable points to use in your own business/career.

4 out of 5 stars Loyalty and Profits.......2000-12-10

Loyalty.com explains how customer loyalty can increase the company profits. Companies must focus on building relationships with their customers. Loyalty is the last level of a customer relationship. The importance of this relationship is finely presented by the author.

1 out of 5 stars Repackaged Database Marketing.......2000-11-15

The book is chock full of examples and anecdotes but really has no new worthwhile conceptualizations or insights to make it worth reading. If you don't know anything about database marketing, then you will get something out of this book. If you are familiar with the basic concepts of customer database analysis, loyalty programs and relationship marketing, there is nothing new here. In fact a much better introduction to all those concepts is The Loyalty Effect by Reichenheld or Customer Connections by Wayland and Cole. The subtitle mentions the dot com world, but the book has little to say about the Internet. The book really does not cover CRMs (as oppsed to database marketing) in that it fails describe how CRM systems work and what database, modeling and communications platforms are required to implement them.

This book is written in a down-to-earth style and with humor. The author doesn't claim to be a management "guru". He doesn't over-complicate things - he is not trying to sell a complex management process, and so states things clearly and in simple terms.

Although it is possible to make money through fear and deception (witness the large-scale criminal gangs), it does not bring much joy to any of the participants, and it subtracts from rather than adds to the sum total of technological, intellectual and spiritual capital in the world.

The best organisations (and the ones that in the longer term are the most successful) are those that deal with customers and employees with honesty and integrity. They try to produce what the customer wants, at an appropriate price. They provide good service. They know that loyal customers are cheaper to keep and will spend more with them.

It's about passion, conviction and integrity. If you ain't got it, you can't fake it.
