      This is a very informative book even from a native Chinese perspective. It really captures the ethos of the Chinese social thinking, in its most essential strategic sense. I wish I myself had read that long ago.

      1 out of 5 stars Is Negotiation a win-win or a win-lose practice?.......2001-07-28

      I quite agree with Eric's review. The book is simply a collection of Chinese proverbs which were only valid during the Warring State Period about 1500 years ago.

      This is mainly because negotiation and war are totally different concepts. The former is a win-win practice, and the latter is a win-lose or lose-win practice. Many of the 36 strategies were definitely not designed for negotiation, but only for fighting against enemies.

      The books gives a biased view about Chinese negotiations. We may say that some of the vices can be universally true, not just applicable in China. However, they should not be recommendable for doing business or conducting negotiations. The consequence can be devastating. No companies today loves the idea of bad reputation.

      These stories passed down from generation to generation in China with the purpose to educate people to guard against evil practice. However, the highest modal behaviours lie in Confucius or Taoist teachings: Language (including negotiations) only have meanings if you treat your counterpart fairly and openly.

      In sum, these strategies should not be seen as related to part of the Chinese business practice.

      If there is one thing - if not the only thing - that can be said for sure about China, it is that there is no such thing as a China expert who knows it all.

      For newcomers entering China and Chinese negotiations ( and as a reminder and reality check for seasoned China hands alike ), the application of Sun Tzu's ancient 36 strategies to negotiations with the modern Chinese and the insights gained are a good initiation to a better understanding " why and how " things in China are as they are.

      Studying these lessons will help the new China hands make a great leap forward on their never ending China learning curve.

      This book shows in a very entertaining way how ancient Chinese warfare strategies still apply in the new China of today .

      The stories described offer an excellent illustration of the often bizarre and difficult to grasp Chinese behavior patterns and realities of a very complex society and country in transition.

      At the same time the reader is taught one major , indispensable ingredient for success and survival in China : a deep sense of humor !

      Definitely worth reading

                      The premature deathof Vsevolod Holubnychy in 1977 deprived Western scholarship of one of its leading economists. An incisive and prolific writer, Holubnychy had a wide range of interest that is reflected in this collection of essays: Ukrainian politics; Soviet regional economics, especially the position of Ukraine within the Soviet economic system; Marxist thought and its dissemination beyond Soviet borders; Soviet economic thought; and more specialized topics in economics. In addition to his scholarly contributions, Holubnychy examined current political events in the journal Vpered (Forward), a Ukrainian workers' newspaper in Munich, using a variety of pseudonyms and on occasion writing anonymously.

                      Of the nine essays included in this volume, three are published here for the first time: "The Agrarian Revolution in Ukraine"; "Marxography and Marxology"; and "V.V. Novozhilov's Theory of Value." The rest are among Holubnychy's finest works and are reprinted by permission.

                      Throughout his life, the author remained a controversial figure in the Ukrainian emigration. Forthright and outspoken, his works engendered much discussion. This collection is a fine tribute to a talented and perceptive scholar whose analytical powers had few equals during his lifetime and have been sorely missed since his death.

                      This book also includes a bibliography of published works by Vsevolod Holubnychy (compiled by Osyp Danko).
