    Book Description

"Ford Motor Company would not have survived the competition had it not been for an emphasis on results. We must view education the same way," the U.S. Secretary of Education declared in 2003. But is he right? In this provocative new book, Larry Cuban takes aim at the alluring cliché that schools should be more businesslike, and shows that in its long history in business-minded America, no one has shown that a business model can be successfully applied to education.

In this straight-talking book, one of the most distinguished scholars in education charts the Gilded Age beginnings of the influential view that American schools should be organized to meet the needs of American businesses, and run according to principles of cost-efficiency, bottom-line thinking, and customer satisfaction.

Not only are schools by their nature not businesslike, Cuban argues, but the attempt to run them along business lines leads to dangerous over-standardization--of tests, and of goals for our children. Why should we think that there is such a thing as one best school? Is "college for all" achievable--or even desirable? Even if it were possible, do we really want schools to operate as bootcamps for a workforce? Cuban suggests that the best business-inspired improvement for American education would be more consistent and sustained on-the-job worker training, tailored for the job to be done, and business leaders' encouragement--and adoption--of an ethic of civic engagement and public service.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A must--timely, lively!.......2005-08-31

Larry Cuban is always timely, but amidst today's hype this is a well-informed, careful and much needed antidote to a lot of what gets said about schooling. It speaks to a wide audience--I hope teachers and school folks read it, and parents, and also the people who write the news we all read.

                  1 out of 5 stars A book for graduates--Not undergrads.......2003-10-28

After the first week of our class falling behind, my professor mentioned to our class that this book was the wrong format for undergrads. So this book is only good as the teacher and the students. It's easy to read, but hard to understand. And, the CD-ROM was not user-friendly enough, but had an awesome integration into MS Excel. I aced all of my math classes in college (undergrad), but this class...I'm not gonna to ace. But if you aced all math classes and you're using this book for a grad class, then go for it. Otherwise, find another book.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2001-12-12

I had one of the worst instructors on the planet this semester. I literally had to teach myself this entire course.
This book made it so much easier. Great diagrams, simple explanations. I ended up with an A.

4 out of 5 stars Easy to follow.......2000-09-17

This book is easy to follow and the included cd makes solving the problems easy. It also has online links for each chapter.

                      Book Description

Learning and adaption are key features of "real economies". Studying interesting real phenomena like innovation, industry evolution or the role of expectation formulation in financial markets thus necessitates novel methods of data analysis and modelling. This title covers statistical models of heterogeneity, artificial consumer markets, models of adaptive expectation formulation in financial markets and agent-based models of industry evolution, product diversification and energy markets. The joint findings are presented in a manner that is interesting both for readers with a background in economics/management and mathematics and statistics and also for non-expert readers because it allows them to grasp the ideas of modern management science. This book thus provides a unique integrated toolbox for building realistic agent-based models of learning and adaption in a variety of settings based on sound data analysis.

2 out of 5 stars for scientists only!.......2001-01-10

This is very theoretical stuff. It seems to be written by academical scientists and you can hardly feel the connection to real world, although the second half of this book consists of 4 cases. These are, however, so similar to each other and pretty borring. The Sherlock approach seems to be simply 5-steps process of domain-oriented software production and it isn't worth any book, maybe some articles at most. But if you are research worker at a university and you treat the software production as matter of theory, it is a suitable book for you. Who is looking for practical advices should rather avoid reading it.

                                  Book Description

Managers who are able to conceptualize and align management systems with business strategy are more likely to achieve on-the-job results, receive higher performance appraisals, and move up in the organization. This in-depth study of senior, middle and first-line managers examines how successful managers use management systems to achieve high productivity and innovation in their areas of responsibility.

In today's fast-paced, dynamic and highly competitive work environment, organizations strive to attract and develop strong leaders and managers. Executive, human resource specialists, organization development and training professionals are vitally interested in learning what qualities or characteristics the best leaders and managers exhibit, and how to develop those qualities in their existing workforce. While previous research has focused on the qualities of strong leader/managers primarily in senior or first-line management positions, this book reports the results of a comprehensive analysis of successful senior, middle and first-line managers in a high technology company. In this book, the reader will learn how the best managers define management systems and align those systems with business strategy in ways that achieve desired business results, and identify them as the leaders of the future.
