        4 out of 5 stars a real-life version of The Goal.......1998-03-26

This book is a very detailed account of how Harris Semiconductor's Mountaintop plant turned itself around. The book makes numerous references to Goldratt's book "The Goal" and is itself a sort of real-life version of that book. The first three or four chapters detail the history of the plant, having originally been an RCA plant, then bought by GE only to be bought by Harris. During this time, there was much turmoil and low morale. The rest of the book is a detailed account of how things were turned around. Each improvement is detailed in its own chapter.

Be warned, however, that the book deals with a semiconductor manufacturing plant. For those unfamiliar with this subject, the book could be either an interesting introduction to the manufacture of semiconductors or a bit obtuse.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I used to work at a different Harris location and therefore many of the themes ring true. I recommend that interested people check out ganesha.org where more detailed info is available.

5 out of 5 stars THE GENTEEL POOR FIGHT BACK: VALUABLE 19TH CENTURY HISTORY.......2003-05-17

Dr. Kathleen Waters Sander (Ph.D. - History, U. of MD.) has written an extremely valuable book centered on the women's industrial exchange movement of the 19th century. Ruthless 19th century capitalism (also known as "capitalism at its finest") was not controlled or regulated by government, and offered no "safety nets" or benefits. Many individuals and families lived the "genteel life" during the 19th century for temporary periods, then were unceremoniously tossed off of the gravy train into the world of poverty.....a world for which they were often tragically unsuited, often even than those impoverished their entire lives.

The women's exchange movement provided relief for previously "genteel" women suddenly or gradually reduced to circumstances bordering on desperation. In more than 70 American cities, a system of consignment retail shops was set up in which
"consignors" (previously genteel but subsequently impoverished women) could offer domestic products (mostly sewing and needlework items) for sales anonymously. The "shame" of impoverishment was hidden, capitalism's sins were uncomplained about, and some income for desperate women and their dependents was achieved. The brutal policing visited on those who complained about expoitation by the capitalist system was escaped.

The women's industrial exchange movement was remarkable for its ingenuity and its imagination, and also for its longevity. Today, women's industrial exchange tea rooms and other facilities still operate and function, in some situations (as in Baltimore, Maryland) in facilities more than a century old.

At the dawn of the 21st century, the model and mentality of the women's industrial movement, described well by Dr. Sander, is a shining light of hope for impoverished people in a world where protections against capitalistic rapacity and greed are clearly disappearing completely. Neither government nor disappearing "benefits" (retirement pensions, health insurance, etc.) offered by companies to gullible employees seem likely to protect vulnerable people any longer. The loss of government promised "benefits" in all catagories seems very likely for the great majority of citizens as the new century progresses.

Self-help actions independent of government and employers alike seem the best hope. The women's industrial exchange movement of the 19th century is a splendid model of how independent self-help action can work. It's truly inspiring, and a detailed history of its origins, successes, problems, and management such as that offered by Dr. Kathleen Sander is worth reading.

                Book Description

Capturing Customers.com provides detailed and straightforward explanations and useful illustrations of strategies and tactics for successful selling and marketing of products and services in today's wired world. Sure, the Internet is an important part of the equation, but it's not the whole story. In fact, author George Colombo clearly demonstrates that the key to successful selling and marketing on the Internet is the degree to which online strategy can be coordinated with other business tools.

                Capturing Customers.com helps readers understand:
                - The shifting balance of power between sellers and buyers.
                - How to redefine their businesses for a web-centric world
                - The object of the game remains the same-to capture customers.
                - How to let the customer define the terms of engagement.
                - How to integrate e-centives into existing marketing plans.
                - How to enhance interactivity and responsiveness to meet the time demands of Internet speed. Not connected or affiliated with Patricia Seybold or The Patricia Seybold Group, Inc.

5 out of 5 stars Learning the Valuable Lessons.......2004-02-05

Forests have been felled to carry articles and books analysing the Internet Boom and its Bust from every conceivable angle. This book offers far more than simple analysis, breaking down cases and examples into straightforward lessons for business owners and executives.

George Colombo has an engaging, direct style that is short on jargon and long on lessons that can be applied to nearly any business that wants to use the web to increase customer contacts and sales. Colombo argues that the basics of business still matter, whether the business is based in a downtown storefront or a Java-heavy catalog application. It's the sort of advice that a lot of us could have used in 1998.

I'm a survivor of the Internet Era, and have read many of the books that have tried to make sense of what happened, but this is the one that will be covered with pointers and sticky notes when we're building the next business web site. Capturing Customers.com is a keeper.

4 out of 5 stars The book is useful!.......2002-01-21

It is a useful book which can give readers much information about runing a Dot com company. It was known to me that, running a company with web page only cannot work effectively since physical supports are needed to provide to customers. So, the author recommended the points that I think it is quite insightful, that is "the integration of online/offline strategies. As online business can support the offline business, i.e. physical store, salesperson. The reason is that customized services and stores are needed to provide to customers, so that the company can suvive in the competitive market.

Also, another useful point of the book is about the offline strategies. Since the effective use of offline strategies can greatly help the operation of the company and the promotion of products and services, there are some strategies that suggested by author.

For example, personalized customers through internet, e.g. asking them for their personal information, so that the company can send those things customers are interested and customized the email messages, for reminding and promoting about the products or services the company could provide to them.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book Very Informative.......2001-07-31

This book was very helpful to me as a beginner in internet marketing. It opened my eyes to many new ideas and ways of thinking. The author's style of writing was comfortable and easy to comprehend. I have already recommended this book to several of my co-workers.

4 out of 5 stars Back to Earth.......2001-06-27

What I liked most about this book, is that it cuts through a lot of the (now obvious) hype of the internet to focus on the fact that you cannot simply ignore traditional means of developing customer relationships when you decide to incorporate the internet into your business plans. Effective businesses still need to provide face-to-face and voice contact with customers.

This book also stands on the shoulders of other giants by including several interviews with key industry gurus that honestly have perceptive insights. For example: In a world where pricing cannot provide you with a competitive advantantage, how do you differentiate yourself or your products?

The tenor of the book is summed up in the my favorite quote: "In the grand scheme of things, the technology piece of the puzzle is relatively easy. There is plenty of talent out there that is available to help you get where you want to go. The hard part is knowing where to go."

This book helps you to see where you need to go.

My only criticism is that there are several typos and grammatical errors in the book that would have been caught if somebody had done a little proof-reading before it went to press. The errors, however, are minor and do not detract much from what is a very helpful book written in an engaging style.

5 out of 5 stars Right on the Mark.......2001-04-15

Colombo's insight into establishing and maintaining a web based business is crucial to success. Colombo demonstrates what is needed to establish, and maintain a website for long term business success. This book is a must read for folks just starting a business and desire to use the web as a marketing tool. Even for established "brick and mortar" businesses, Colombo gives good advice on how to reach customers to acheive incremental sales growth. Even if you think you know how to use the web to your advantage, I would recommend this book. In today's competitive environment, practical information is what you need. This book delivers.

                    Book Description

This casebook, designed as a companion volume to Richard J. Schonberger's World Class Manufacturing: The Lessons of Simplicity Applied, contains 26 cases that let students of WCM concepts solve actual JIT and TQC implementation problems in a wide variety of manufacturing and corporate settings. For readers with specific concerns, each case lists the topics covered (i.e., kanban, total preventive maintenance, partnership with customer) and each case includes questions on issues that companies commonly face in implementing WCM concepts. Dr. Schonberger also explains two JIT and TQC concepts not previously published -- micro-JIT analysis of shop-floor conditions by ratios and the "naturalistic" approach to quality improvement.

Everything you need to know to start using the potential of progressive data mining resources that computer technology has made possible is in this book. Using these techniques, our firm was able to quickly recognize wasted effort and eliminate it, and then to zero in on where financial rewards were most likely. The result has been better profits, and a happier, less frustrated organization. I strongly recommend this book to business decision makers of all kinds. It will change the way you look at your operation. to quote the Beatles: Messrs K & H assure the public a splendid time is guaranteed to all.

The market is saturated with IT/business books and often times it's hard to spot something that in fact might be useful. This book seems to be one of those few picks. Without going into a 300 page narrative, the authors manage to clearly address their points and fill in the bottomless gap between sophisticated IT and business solutions. Data Mining became a hot topic only a few years ago, but it has a great future. The earlier you get a handle on it, the better chance you have to stay on the cutting edge of business tomorrow. "Data Mining & Business Intelligence: A Guide to Productivity" gives you basic guidelines for a smarter way to manage data in your organization. It explains what tools you can use and teaches you the actual methods for data management. It's a great source of information for busy people who want to make a change in their organizations as well as for students, who by reading this book, can better see the needs of today's business world.

As technology aids the processing of information, Data Mining continues to play a large role in delivering information and analysis to enhance productivity. K & H have hit the nail on the head with this book!

This book, following a conversational yet didactic format, touches upon the critical issues surrounding the effective use and implementation of business intelligence tools / concepts. Kudyba and Hoptroff have distilled the salient features of complex data preparation, analysis, and presentation methodologies with the average business user in mind. It was refreshing to finally find a book that attempts to "put all the BI - instead of the BS - together" for the enterprise. This is a must read for those just getting into advanced analytical applications; yet, it also serves as a good refresher for those already entrenched in CRM and BI implementation.

Finally, a practical book that discusses the use of data mining technologies from the position of "adding value" to the business, and tied to fundamental proven economic methods.

The focus of the book is on connecting information technologies and tools to the "business drivers." Data mining technologies frequently are misunderstood, inappropriately planned and deployed, and typically left to the mathematicians instead of putting the tools in the hands of those who could use it best; the business analysts and executives who "know" the business.

Concentrating on the process of adding value within an integrated business intelligence architecture, the authors discuss such topics as Six Sigma, Market Basket analysis and other practical uses of data mining as a strategic competitive weapon.

If you have or are considering how data mining technologies fit in with business intelligence or decision support systems, then read this book. It will also comfortably fit into your briefcase, unlike the typical book-size tombs normally written on data mining.
