Customer Reviews:
A wonderful book that will help the reader train himself or herself to research and write a stellar business plan of their own!.......2007-10-10
VOLUME 11. I love this resource. I cannot say enough positive things about it. I am a SCORE (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) volunteer who provides business coaching services via email and in-person. I have recommended on almost every occasion that my "clients" who are starting a business and need to prepare a business plan search out for this volume and the others that follow it at their public library, community college library, or university library.
A business plan is a 25-35 page written document that includes the following ten sections:
1. Business History and Outlook
2. Description of Product or Services
3. Market Examination (target market)
4. Description and analysis of Competition (competitors serving target market)
5. Marketing (various options and a plan)
6. Operations
7. Administration and Management
8. Key Personnel
9. Potential Problems and Solutions to those Problems
10. Financial Information (BS, IS, Stmt of Cash Flows)
Included in this volume are the following sample business plans:
1. Adventure Travel Lodging Company
2. Brewpub
3. Cigar Company
4. Construction Development and Real Estate Firm
5. Construction and Home Rehabilitation Company
6. Daycare Facility
7. Food Distributor (template)
8. Giftware Company
9. Handmade Greeting Card Company
10. Handyman Service
11. Hardware Store (template)
12. Homeless Shelter
13. Interior Design Company
14. Interior Painting Service
15. Internet Loyalty Program
16. Internet Services Portal
17. Massage Therapists
18. Mentally Disabled Care Facility
19. Motorcycle Dealership and Racetrack
20. Online Mortgage Company
21. Pizza Parlor
22. Private Investigator
None of the above plans are 25-35 pages long. And few if any have good Financial Information. But what they do provide the reader is examples of how business plans are supposed to present information. You will no doubt see big holes in the sample plans. It is those holes you need to be aware of so you can fill them in when you prepare your own business plan.
Read the plans as if you were going to use them to start a similar business. Ask yourself what you still need to know after reading each plan that you must have an answer for in order to use the plan as a blueprint for actually running your own business. As you do this for each of the plans you will become expert at analyzing and critiquing business plans. And that is what you need to be able to do well when you write your own business plan. 5 stars!

Awesome - Quick BP's.......2001-10-27
Excellent quick read for getting quick BP's. See how the experts do it. What I really like was the editing. It made disparate business plans flow as if they were written by one man. The editing was excellent, bravo!

Book Description
This book reveals the true secrets of market research and lays out useful information the author has learned during his long career.
Customer Reviews:
A Valuable Book from one of the Leaders in the Business.......2007-08-10
From Research to Riches is a must read for anybody who is a purchaser of market research services. Mr. Nelems doesn't waste words in this tightly written explanation. Covering all of the basics, he lays out in clear detail what everyone should know about sampling error, focus groups, random sample and other key ideas. I've known Jim for a number of years now and there is no better person to explain some of the mysteries and fallacies surrounding this business.
Excellent Resource for Researchers and Non-Researchers Alike.......2003-05-14
This book is a great resource for any marketer - from full time research managers to those who simply conduct projects occasionally. This book does a great job explaining common research pitfalls and gives the reader a clear roadmap for conducting actionable research.
Business intelligence.......2003-04-16
Many people believe that marketing research is a panacea that solves their problems and insulates them from failure. Others think that it's a colossal waste of money. In this book you'll learn that both points of view are wrong. Research is a tool for business intelligence, and like all tools, it is only as good as the person who wields it. As a nationally recognized research practitioner, Jim Nelem's has successfuly packaged a terrific overview of the discipline with practical advice that can guide the novice and hone the skills of experienced marketers. It's not a dry acamemic treatise, rather it's filled with humorous anecdotes that serve to entertain, as well as to illustrate a point. He begins with a brief history and definition of terms which, as an experienced marketer, I almost skipped over. I'm glad I didn't! I discovered some interesting and useful gems of information, plus it served as a reference for the ensuing discussion of the different types of research, the applications they are best suited for, and the pitfalls to be avoided. Nelems chonicles the 25 most common mistakes and tells you how to achieve the best possible outcomes.
Most important, I found useful and practical information here that is vital to properly collecting and synthesizing the right data into meaningful business intelligence. Acting on that information, businesses can create better products, enhance services, build customer loyalty and get repeat business. Oh, and by the way, it will also improve your ability to communicate your message!
This is an essential addition to any marketing and/or business library!
Great Book.......2003-02-24
Great information for all marketers - will help establish goals and direction for your next research study as well as aid in interperting the results
chairman, Ries & Ries.......2003-01-04
"Finally, someone shines a spotlight on the shoddy work that often passes for marketing research. Before you commission your next study, read Jim Nelem's new book and you'll greatly improve your odds of getting the right answers."

Book Description
This is the official account of the experiments carried out at the Hawthorne Works of the Eastern Electric Company in Chicago.
These were divided into test room studies, interviewing studies, and observational studies. The test room studies examined variables in a workplace environment that might affect worker fatigue. The findings of these tests led to extensive interviewing on the attitudes of the workers, followed by consideration of social factors using techniques of cultural anthropology to observe small working groups. The results of these experiments profoundly influenced the Human Resources movement.
Book Description
Delivers the methodology for achieving the greatest return on investment from enterprise software purchases. Includes organizing enterprise software project team, negotiating contracts that work for everyone, Fortune 500 case studies, and much more. Softcover. DLC: Application software--Purchasing.
Customer Reviews:
Good content, but writing could be improved........2005-09-01
The content is quite good covering the full range of the software acquisition process. The case studies were good and detailed. But the writing and editing could be improved. Content was commonly repeated two or three times making the reading laborious. I am surprised that an editor would let this through.
