The emphasis on student outcomes and state and national standards demands an innovative form of supervision!
In this exciting, new edition of
Supervision That Improves Teaching, the authors have taken their reflective clinical supervision process to a new level, with the planning conference now the heart of the supervision cycle.
Sullivan and Glanz have addressed the dilemmas of preserving meaningful supervision in an era of high-stakes testing and local, state, and national standards. The authors’ reflective clinical supervision model encourages and prepares educators to be thoughtful collaborators in improving classroom instruction. And they have extended the options for teacher observation to a thorough but manageable set of tools for standards-based supervision.
Outstanding additions to the revised second edition include:
- Strategies and observation tools for maintaining reflective supervision in a standards-based environment
- Twelve new instructional tools, for help with team teaching, working with diverse student bodies and English Language Learners, and applying balanced literacy, among other topics
- Emphasis on the planning conference as the beginning of professional development for teachers
- A new case study on the collaborative classroom walk-through
- Critical updates on innovative approaches to supervision for prospective and practicing instructional leaders
- Strategies for using the reflective clinical supervision model in distance learning and online educational leadership courses
This bestselling approach continues to offer interpersonal tools for initiating and providing feedback on classroom observations, alternative approaches to common supervision practices, and the tools necessary for present and future educational leaders to develop dynamic conversations about learning between and among educators-the essence of what effective supervision is really about.

Highly technical, and comprehensive.......2002-06-17
This book is an in-depth text on the subject. It has a very good coverage of the underlying mathematics fundamentals of Reliability Engineering. Full of good examples, and case studies.
Software is not very useful, but decent considering it is free.
This is a book worth of keeping for a reliability practioner.......1999-11-20
The book provides a comprehensive knowledge on reliability analysis. I rarely see a book like this in terms of the non-parametric model analysis.
Book Description
Process Assessment and Improvement: A Practical Guide For Managers, Quality
Professionals and Assessors provides the reader with a powerful and practical approach to improving their organization through process assessment, combined with people factors such as organizational culture and team based improvement. It is the first practical guidebook to the emerging ISO/IEC 15504 standard.
Process Assessment and Improvement: A Practical Guide For Managers, Quality Professionals and Assessors covers the three major business reasons for process assessment including setting Target Profiles, Process Capability Determination and Process Improvement in chapters 2 to 5. The book provides powerful figures on the costs of poor quality, and the benefits of improvement for organizations involved in software and IT. This book provides comprehensive improvement programs and also agile improvement methodologies, grounded in successful practices that have been employed in world class organizations.
Chapters 6 to 8 provide assessors with a standard assessment method and variants, plus how to rate a process up to ISO/IEC 15504 capability level 5. Chapter 9 describes industry experience using the standard. Useful examples, templates and tools are provided in Annexes. There is a companion book titled Process Assessment and ISO/IEC 15504: A Reference Book.
Customer Reviews:
Highly recommend if you want to boost your business.......2004-12-01
This author has written two books about process assessment; this one looks at how process assessment can be used - in other words the practical aspects. It is written in a way that should appeal to businessmen and managers, as well as quality specialists and assessors.
The author starts by looking at the cost of poor quality - billions per year and writes 3 business cases for the use of process assessment - a good way to convince management to invest in quality activities such as process assessment. The author obviously has worked in highly capable organizations and provides the reader with some very thought provoking facts and questions. The first half of the book should appeal to any technical or management trained reader (e.g. MBAs) - explaining in a clear way how to use assessment results for determining the capability of your suppliers, or how to improve your own business. The author has provided various ways to improve the organization, both based upon the standard and upon methods he developed, including agile improvement methods and team-based methods. He addresses people aspects in several sections, including some cultural aspects in order to help readers who face organizational politics (and who doesn't sometime run into that!). He describes how various industries are using the standard - which throws light on how much the standard is being used in Europe. The book also has some very detailed help for process assessors in 3 chapters on planning, running and performing assessments.
The book presents information, using lots of illustrations and tables to ease the reader's understanding. Overall I found the approach very readable and the advice practical and very useful. It makes a good complement to the Reference book written by the same author.
I highly recommend this book to readers looking for help in improving their business.

Description:
The classical economic production quantity (EPQ) model assumes that items are produced by a perfectly reliable production process with a fixed set-up cost. While the reliability of the production process cannot be perfected cost-free, the set-up cost can be reduced by investment in flexibility improvement. In this paper, we propose an EPQ model with a flexible and imperfect production process. We formulate this inventory decision problem using geometric programming (GP), establish more general results using the arithmetic-geometric mean inequality, and solve the problem to obtain a closed-form optimal solution. Following the theoretical treatment, we provide a numerical example to demonstrate that GP has potential as a valuable analytical tool for studying a certain class of inventory control problems. Finally we discuss some aspects of sensitivity analysis of the optimal solution based on the GP approach.

I taught a class using this book. There are better books out there. The book needs to be updated and seems to skip around (or does not flow very well)
The method guide of choice for the process challenged.......2000-02-05
This book handles alot of subjects that are very broad and diverse. It is not by far an all incompassing theory reference but if you need some really good standardized methods to improve the way you process material and improve Q&R, it definitely fits that bill. This book would be excellent for the ME manager type or perhaps the production manager with problems.
Book Description
The "importance of understanding" has become almost an obsession with significant portions of American business. There remain, however, many companies that attempt to operate as they traditionally have in the past - placing great faith in the owner's or manager's judgment as to what is required to remain competitive. In this paper, the author has articulated clearly the fundamentals of sound intelligence practice and has identified some guidelines that can lead toward creation of a solid intelligence infrastructure. These signposts apply both to government intelligence and to business. Good intelligence should always be based on validated requirements, but it may be derived from a wide variety of sources, not all of which are reliable. Understanding the needs of the consumer and the sources available enable an analyst to choose the correct methodology to arrive at useful answers. The author has laid out in clear, concise language a logical approach to creating an infrastructure for government and business. Every system will have flaws but this discussion should help the reader minimize those weaknesses. It is an important contribution to the education of government and business intelligence professionals. James A. Williams, LTG, U.S. Army (Ret.) Former Director, Defense Intelligence Agency

Comments from the author.......2005-01-16
I wrote this primer as the first-ever "voice from the inside" about intelligence, aimed at the general public, and especially the business community. It is available for free download at http://www.scip.org/ci/intelessentials.asp
Since this is a government publication, it is not copyrighted. Anyone is welcome to use and reproduce it for any purpose, however, I do appreciate being given credit. Hardcopies are available for free to government employees. Contact the JMIC using the info inside the book. The GPO and NTIS also sell hardcopy. Major universities also have copies.
Excellent book but cheaper elsewhere.......2003-09-23
This is an excellent book. However, it is interesting that it is $22.95 from this publisher. It is actually a government publication available for under $7 from the U.S. GPO.

Poorly edited and written.......2006-01-15
This book is atrocious in its implementation of its text AND of its review questions at the end of the chapter. Many times there will be questions asked which no way of being answered given what is presented in the text. This book was a requirement for a college, otherwise it is useless as a learning tool.
I am amazed!!!.......2005-04-30
The other reviews of this text amaze me! Yes there are some errors, and some of the end-of-chapter exercises do require a little thought - that is probably why one reviewer couldn't answer them. It is a short concise, very straightfoward to use text, I use support material for the lectures and my own materials for the tutorials, but this book is very good at highlighting the key points. It is up to your lecturer to make it more interesting I'm afraid. Overall I think this is a very good Systems Analysis text for 1st year MIS students.
Waste of Time.......2004-04-18
This textbook is incomplete, inaccurate, and invalid as a tool for teaching students about current System Analysis and Design concepts. Beg your instructor to choose a different textbook.
Horrible.......2003-10-14
I purchased this text for a college course, that I was required to take. Simply put this is one of the worst textbooks I have ever seen. The author does not clearly explain the concepts in the book, he uses the most vauge definitions I've ever seen. I reccomend to any students taking a course with this book, appeal to the proffeser to get a diffrent text, and to any proffesors considering using it for their course, please reconsider.
Horrible.......2003-09-19
I was forced to use this book for a class. I find the text very unclear and hard to understand with quite a few errors. The layout of the pages is poor and the author seems to get lost in his/her own words. The problems found at the end of each chapter never give enough information to tell you what you are supposed to be doing and they often ask for information that is not found in the text. For what you get this book is extremely overpriced. I may even sell this book back.

A nostalgic look at life before intranets.......2001-08-15
I recently picked this book up second-hand and found it to be a quite enjoyable read. I only wish it was current, for the modern marketplace needs more books like it.
Rather than focus on a particular vendor's products or certification exam, the authors explain the big picture of client/server networking in an acronym-rich format that only a "big iron" programmer could love. Exhaustive coverage of database systems, groupware, and transaction processing are also presented, elaborated on by silly cartoons reminiscent of Greg Perry's early work.
Alas, times have changed. "Cairo" is obsolete now, and OS/2 did not provide the panacea to every client/server ill. I would strongly suggest that any reader of this review obtain a copy of the much newer third edition (ISBN: 0471316156). I certainly will.
Incredible, Unbeatable, Fantastic.......1999-02-14
You cannot imagine the things this book provide. I was invited to prepare a lecture to introduce some Cobol developers to the C/S world. I took 10 days to read the book and 2 weeks after the lecture, we observe that all that guys aren't just talking different. Most important; they are THINKING different. This is the real benefit. Congratulations to the authors. Their approach, their style and their humor are great.
Best written & organized computer I've read yet!.......1998-11-11
The is the first time I've taken the time to write a review - and for a technology book 2 years out of date! I love the style and organization. This is a lot of very relevent information packed into 600 pages that will give anyone new to client/server architectures a great understanding of the market(s). Take a look at the table of Contents to see what I mean. And trust me, it's not ..For Dummies drivel. The author's "soapboxes" (mostly predictions) are great reading for where they were right on (most of the time) and just close (e.g. CORBA). I can't wait for a new edition to address XML in all of it's flavors.
Good book for introduction to Client/Server.......1998-11-06
The book is a good source of information for people who have been hearing all the buzz words of Client/Server technology but didn't really know what these words meant. The reader will get enough knowledge of these technologies to at least do BS when talking about Client/Server with his boss. Client/Server technology covers a lot of aspects, but the authors have very methodically covered almost all these aspects. I would recommend this book to people making an entrance to the world of Client/Server. One thing a didn't like: the book is full of cartoon characters who aren't really helping you get any concepts. Also these cartoons have been given too much space in terms of space/page.
one of the best reads in information technology!.......1998-10-19
The Essential Client/Server Survival Guide, Second Edition, demystifies many of the complex concepts and technologies with which we struggle daily in this world of information systems. In addition, it is a good read! The authors have written with a sense of humor (and with the tongue planted firmly in cheek), but do not talk down to the reading audience in any way. The information contained in the book is well-organized and thoughtfully presented. I use this book as a reference, and, starting in the winter quarter, I will be using this book as the required text for a database technology seminar course I teach at a local university -- by popular student request! Congratulations to the authors on a job well done!
