          Book Description

Organizations performing non-routine, innovative, often knowledge- intensive tasks - for example professional partnerships - need a rather flat, collegial, and non - bureaucratic structure. This book examines cooperation among partners in a US corporate law firm and provides a grounded theory of collective action among rival peers, or collegiality. It is first network study of such a frim. Members (partners and associates) are portrayed as independent entrepreneurs who build social niches in their organization and cultivate status competition among themselves. This behaviour allows them to fulfil their commitment to an extremely constraining partnership agreement and generates informal social mechanisms (bounded solidarity, lateral control, oligarchic regualtion) that help a flat organization govern itself: maintain individual performance, even for tenured partners; capitalize knowledge and control quality; monitor and sanction opportunistic free-riding; solve the 'too many chefs' problem; balance the powers of rainmakers and schedulers; and integrate the firm in spite of many centrifugal forces. These mechanisms and the solutions they provide are examined using a broadly-conceived structural approach combining theory-driven network analysis, ethnography of task forces performing knowledge-intensive work, and analysis of management and internal politics in the firm. Emmanuel Lazega presents a theory of the collegial organization which generalizes its results to all kinds of partnerships, larger multinational professional services firms, and collegial pockets in flattening bureaucracies alike.

5 out of 5 stars Well designed course material - full coverage of key topics.......2002-08-06

This instructor's guide is equally focused on quality improvement in a general sense as well as on 6-Sigma techniques.

It starts off with a module on course planning that lays out the curriculum and objectives. It then introduces 6-Sigma, followed by modules for improvement planning, problem solving, process management and common tools. Each module is, in my opinion, excellent. For example, improvement planning introduces quality function deployment (QFD) as a primary tool/technique. Problem solving gives a structured 5-step process that can be effectively used by anyone, regardless of their job or role, and the module on process management is where the 6-Sigma tools and techniques are introduced, along with design of experiments (Taguchi Technique), and an implementation plan. QFD is also more thoroughly covered in this module.

The final module covers most of the common TQM tools and techniques, which round out the knowledge and skill areas required by anyone responsible for supporting 6-Sigma at the worker through line manager levels.

Overall, this is a well written book that gives instructors a clearly defined outline for a syllabus and learning objectives.

"Andrews does a superb job in offering solutions to familiar problems for African Americans. Complete with charts, graphs, facts and figures, the author provides readers with a vivid display of how the scales of equality, wealth and power are tipped against people of color." -Upscale

"Andrews' aim is to paint an intellectually defensible and decidedly anti-conservative picture of the complicated tie between race and economic well being." -Booklist

"Fiery, passionate, and provocative, but also unflinchingly rigorous in its argument. It is rare for an economist to write with such fire bolstered by such a commitment to logical reasoning." -William A. Darity, Jr.

The Political Economy of Hope and Fear analyses the role technology, capitalism and conservative economic and social policy have played in determining the economic status of black Americans at the end of the 20th century. Andrews argues that black people are poorer, sicker, and less well educated than whites because the blue collar road to middle-class life has given way to technology, globalization and free market conservatism.

                      Product Description

During the 1960s, the automobile finally secured its position as an indispensable component of daily life in Britain. Car ownership more than doubled from approximately one car for every 10 people in 1960 to one car for every 4.8 people by 1970. Advertisers, who once needed to promote the joys of motoring as well as the particular pleasures of the individual product, no longer needed to wonder whether the potential customer (let alone society at large) might be content with no car at all. It was during this time that the question changed from "Do we need a car?" to "What car shall we have?" This well-illustrated history explores the many types and trends of ads issued by both domestic car manufacturers and importers in three main sections: "Family Marques: Engines of an Industry," "Luxury and Sporting Marques: Aspiration and Escape" and "Imported Marques: Britain Embraces the World." Twelve appendices provide information on various topics ranging from the value of the pound in 1958-70 and imports of cars from selected countries, to car manufacturers' and importers' advertising agencies, and approximate monthly press advertising expenditures. Over 180 advertisement illustrations are also included.

                      Book Description

In TechnoBrands, Chuck Pettis introduces the first published step-by-step process for building brands. While modern day “branding” has been around for more than a century—everybody knows the power of names such as Coca-Cola, Microsoft, GE, Disney, Intel, or Nokia—very few people know the “secrets” of branding and how to successfully apply branding.

Filled with examples and insights from successful technology marketers, such as Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft, and Intel, TechnoBrands describes every step in the branding process, including: market research, creating the brand identity, applying the brand, and creating successful brand names.

While written from a technology product perspective, the proven branding process in TechnoBrands has been applied to consumer brands and non-profit organizations, with great success.

“Chuck Pettis has written an important book on a subject of great significance to technology companies of all types. Those who don’t grasp the meaning and value of the brand assets can only hope their competitors are equally naïve.”
-Roy E. Verley, Director, Corporate Communications, Hewlett-Packard

“Building strong brands is the only way to ensure enduring profitable growth. If this is your goal, read TechnoBrands.”
-Larry Light, President & CEO, Arcature Corporation

1 out of 5 stars Does not deliver.......2005-04-19

Technobrands is a book about branding new technologies. According to the author, techno branding is different from usual branding and needs a new approach. The book is supposed to introduce this new approach and make you, and your company, more successful.

The problem is that the book does not deliver. It is a series of generalitities strung together. The concept of technobrand is not defined and the differences with usual branding are not properly explained. There are no practical advice on branding (except the overly repeated advice to test your plans with focus groups). The author cites 'authorities' throughout the book and at the start of each chapter. I realized how desperate he was when he actually cited himself (chapter four).

Technobranding may be a good idea. But this book is not the place to learn about it.

3 out of 5 stars Strong on branding, weak on selling technology.......2001-06-25

Mr Pettis does a fine job describing the positioning and branding needs of a high tech company. His advertising comments are somewhat dated by the current tech market space. But he misses the most important point on how to link these messages to actual sales. What we have learned in the dot com fallout is that branding is not revenue, advertising is not revenue, PR is not revenue, revenue is revenue.

5 out of 5 stars This book is the bible of technology branding!.......1998-08-27

After doing a multitude of research on the subject of branding specific to technology products, I found very few established research results. However, Pettis' book accurately describes the differences between technology vs. consumer branding. In addition, he describes all of the steps you'll need to rollout an effective technobranding campaign, including how to get buy in from upper management. After speaking directly with branding managers from such major technology companies as Novell, I've found that TechnoBrands echoes their sentiments. TechnoBrands is a great book, and the authority on this subject.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a MUST if you market/ make high tech products........1997-07-17

Reis & Trout's books are an excellent place to learn how to create a successful plan to market consumer products. Marketing technical products is similar, but definitely not the same. (See chapter 3.) "TechnoBrands" defines differences and provide practical advice. Chapter 6, for example, clearly explains how to crystalize your thoughts. Add your common sense and brutal honesty to precise and accurate information and you have the recipe for a successful marketing strategy.

                        Book Description

Total productive maintenance (TPM), a Japanese management protocol developed to alleviate production losses caused by machine breakdowns has moved on.

Through TPM, more companies accept the concept of Zero Breakdowns as achievable. From the foundation of zero breakdowns, world class plants are able to run for complete shifts without the need for intervention. TPM is still pushing back the boundaries of what was thought possible.

Driven by the proven principles of TPM, the book emphasises the need to build on existing good practices and to win commitment by delivering results.

The book provides a practical guide to delivering TPM benefits and is based on the authors' first hand experience of seeing TPM in Japan. It adapts these benefits to suit the strategic needs of companies across four continents.

"TPM A Route to World Class Performance" builds on Peter Willmott's earlier book, "TPM the Western Way", updating the scope of applications and tools. The TPM route map is updated to include the journey to zero breakdowns and beyond. It also provides a systematic structure to evolve from the classic Total Productive Maintenance towards Total Productive Manufacturing and deliver a Totally Productive Operation capable of world leading performance.

                          Book Description

Reliability-Centered Maintenance provides valuable insights into current preventive maintenance practices and issues, while explaining how a transition from the current "preserve equipment" to "preserve function" mindset is the key ingredient in a maintenance optimization strategy. This book defines the four principal features of RCM and describes the nine essential steps to achieving a successful RCM program.

There is an easy to follow example illustrating the Classical RCM systems analysis process using the water treatment system for a swimming pool. As well as the use of software in the system analysis process, making a specific recommendation on a software product to use. Additionally, this new edition possesses an appendix devoted to discussing an economic model that has been used successfully to decide the most cost effective use of maintenance.

Top Level managers, engineers, and especially technicians who rely on PM programs in their plant operations can't afford to miss this inclusive guide to Reliability-Centered Maintenance.

*Includes detailed instructions for implementing and sustaining an RCM program for extremely cost effective manufacturing
*Presents seven real-world cross-industry RCM sucess case studies that have profited from this plan
*Provides essential information on how RCM focuses your maintenance organization to become a recognized "center for profit"
*Offers over 35 accumulated years of the authors' experiences in Lessons Learned for the proper use of RCM (and pitfalls to avoid)

This publication represents the most in-depth information on the various facets of developing and maintaining a world class maintenance program. Written by Richard M. Norman, a long-time maintenance veteran, this book is definitely not a highly technical or theoretical treatise on the maintenance function. Rather, it is a practical guide to better maintenance. Among the subjects covered are financial management, purchasing and stores inventory, preventive and predictive maintenance, statistical equipment maintenance control, measuring maintenance productivity and maintenance training. It was written to be of immediate use to all, at any level of management in the maintenance organization.

4 out of 5 stars Problems with Pronunciation.......2004-06-08

I'll admit it: I purchased this techno-tome in an effort to impress one of the girls in the IT shop at work. She'd been unresponsive to my normal (and myriad) charms and I placed the blame (wrongly) on my inability to speak her language. A few witty anecdotes from this book got me a first date, but my inability to pronounce the authors' names kept me from rounding first. Shameful!

4 out of 5 stars Cases in IT management - Variety is essential.......2000-04-25

This book has a good collection of interesting and easy to understand case studies. Unlike many case study books this does not suffer from containing a lot of overhead data. It is a good companion text for a course in IT Management. The editors offer a variety of cases in terms of both subject matter and context. It has cases from different countries covering a range of industries and organizations (both private and public sectors). The focus, however, is largely operational and tactical issues. Even though the questions at the end of many cases are well formulated, a few cases could benefit from the editorial support in bringing out the readers' creativity. All in all, it is a useful book.
