5 out of 5 stars Readable, practical guide to QS-9000.......1998-08-24

Low cost book on QS-9000, the quality standard for automotive industry and its suppliers and recognized by the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG).

As a basic introduction to what QS-9000 is about, element by element, it's complete and readable. It also gives "How" tips on implementation.

The miniguide includes an overview of the other manuals required for implementation guidance, e.g., Advanced Product Planning and Control Plan (APQP) and Production Part Approval Process (PPAP). These are what distinguish QS-9000 from ISO 9000 quality standards.

Wisely, the authors recommend customers be asked what are their particular needs so that unique requirements can be instilled in the organization's QS-9000 system.

For a person like me at an ISO 9001 house but not in the automotive industry (yet!), reading this miniguide made me an informed person about the similarities and differences of QS-9000 and the ISO 9000 quality systems.

                  Book Description

Written for planning professionals in corporations and the nonprofit sector this volume addresses a critical facet of the business planning process: the need for adequate CI (competitive intelligence). As the authors note at the outset, a business cannot develop a sound competitive strategy without reliable CI, nor can it expect to apply that strategy without an ongoing CI effort. Improved Business Planning Using Competitive Intelligence examines the types of corporate planning and offers practical, detailed advice on using CI techniques to make planning more effective. The authors begin with an overview of CI and business planning, focusing on such areas as the phases of CI, the importance of planning, the basic requirements of planning, the types of CI available, and the ways in which CI can be injected into corporate strategy formulation. Subsequent chapters address the actual procedures involved in using CI: gathering and analyzing data, recognizing disinformation, integrating CI into business planning, supplementing business planning with CI, shadowing markets, and defending one firm from another's CI efforts. Each chapter includes a list of key references. A glossary of terms and four appendices dealing with the CI process as a whole complete this indispensable contribution to the literature of corporate planning.

In this rigorous analysis of the global trade in coffee, Talbot identifies structural forces limiting the effectiveness and scope of social justice movements on the market such as organic and fair trade certification programs. While the first few chapters will bore the non-economist, the last two detail specific and realistic trade policy objectives that would more effectively safeguard the livelihoods of small growers and the environment - these chapters will appeal to anyone with an activist streak who has ever seriously considered whether or not purchasing fair trade, shade grown or organic coffee is worthwhile. The preceding commodity chain analysis is dry but lucid, explaining the organization and history of coffee markets and detailing how the consumer price of coffee is divided among profits for transnational corporations, export and processing costs and the growers' costs of production. The most important contribution this book makes is to show in hard numbers that historically, international trade regulations (production quotas, in particular) have had a significant positive impact on the livelihoods of small producers worldwide. Talbot recommends reversing the WTO/IMF roll-back of such regulations and points out that the international community is ready to accept a strong regulatory framework on the coffee trade, if only U.S. citizens will lobby their government to stop favoring the special interests of major coffee corporations that continue to oppose any trade agreements limiting the production of coffee.

                    Description:
While radical innovations and growth strategies supporting such innovations may provide the firm with very high returns, there are also considerable risks in devising and implementing such innovations. Apart from the business risks of venturing into new territories and new markets, radical innovations also carry with them the burden of accounting for market and environmental factors that are often not under the control of the firm. The opportunities presented by the emergence of several Asian markets, such as India and China, are particularly appealing for Western countries willing to expand into these markets. However, market characteristics, institutional development, and customer behaviors bring into sharp focus the choice of a specific innovation and new product development strategy for such markets. This paper examines these various strategic issues in the context of India. The paper concludes with strategic recommendations for managers and some propositions for future academic research.

                          Book Description

This text provides an overview and concise introduction to labor relations in Europe. The author seeks to transcend nationalism in labor relations by focusing his discussion and analysis on the continent as a whole and on groups of countries. The national focus is to some extent given up, not for a concentration on differences within nations, but in favor of a discussion of common European developments. European labor relations have a number of basic features in common, not only in collective bargaining and conflict, but also in worker participation and in the role of national governments. And, in a number of ways, these features are strikingly different from the labor relations model seen in the United States. The text, therefore, offers an illuminating analysis of commonalities and differences within European labor relations, as well as between the United States and Europe.

                                Book Description

An essential guidebook and toolkit for software development teams and team leaders, Team Design organizes best practices, tried and true methods, and killer tips for team product development. This revised edition has not changed radically since 1998 - In some ways, little has changed in five years - we still find real necessity for effective team facilitation in complex cross-disciplinary development projects. This version of Team Design focuses more on the role of project managers and team leaders, bringing the best of facilitation approaches to the leader's role.

5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive and practical guide.......1999-02-09

This book is a comprehensive analysis of the points throughout development life cycles where team collaboration is appropriate for creating deliverables. Formats and methods for conducting team workshops are set out in great detail, based on the organizational environment, project type, end result desired, and particular phase of the life cycle.

Jones proposes a "framework" for development which he calls Team Design and which he contrasts with Joint Application Development (JAD) and other group methods. Jones defines five Formats (Business Process Design, Requirements Definition, Application Design, Team Planning, Decision Making) under which almost any development project or part thereof can be placed. He devotes separate chapters to each Format, defining for each Format the life-cycle steps within the Format, the workshop agenda activities that apply to each phase of the life-cycle, and recommended workshop methods (e.g., brainstorming, scoping diagrams, scenario analysis) that can develop the deliverables for the phase.

Team Design comprises a generic set of life-cycle Phases (Initiating, Scoping, Visualizing, Usage, Packaging, Validating) that can be mapped to each of the five Formats. For each Phase, Jones then recommends certain workshop methods that can be used regardless of the Format. This allows flexibility in analyzing all the factors facing a Project Manager and Facilitator (organization type, project type, end result, life-cycle phase) and adapting a workshop plan that will apply best. It also allows for bridging of experience with workshop methods across different Formats.

Jones also deals in depth with a wide variety of topics related to team-based development, including: (1) JAD and Participatory Design: A survey of the history of these two group-based methods, and an assessment of their strengths and weaknesses in various environments; (2) Facilitation: The scope of Facilitation; the technical competencies required of a Facilitator in a development environment; in-depth description of facilitation tools (e.g., conflict resolution, problem solving) and workshop methods (e.g., brainstorming, diagramming, Pareto charts), and their applicability; (3) Requirements: Analysis of the major problems faced by organizations in creating and managing requirements, and how Team Design can address those problems; (4) Team Dynamics: The phases of team development; team-building techniques; special issues involving workgroups comprising members with different functional backgrounds; and (5) Organizational Culture: The impact of organizational dynamics on a company's receptiveness to structured methods and team-based approaches to development.

5 out of 5 stars A really unique and original work for teaming know-how........1998-04-11

A tremendous discussion and reference of the nuts and bolts for all kinds of teaming in the IT world. It's loaded with nuances related to teaming that you won't easily find in one place. It's also a good review, thinker, and is exceptionally well researched and written. I definitely reccomend this book to anyone who is serious about adding to their skills in this often overlooked but necessary specialty.
