        At first, I thought this book was for company employees only to find out how to put "quality" into insurance, but I was pleasantly surprised that as an insurance professional myself, I learned a great deal about the importance of quality and ethics in this industry. The authors inject some amusing anecdotes, and make you think in different terms about insurance, and how important customer service is. Read it...you'll learn and laugh at the same time.

                            William Tye draws on his large body of work in the area of railroad deregulation to address specific economic problems associated with deregulation. He elucidates principles that can be applied to any major industry entering the competitive marketplace--particularly telecommunications and other utilities, including gas and electric. Tye has updated and revised his previous articles and structured them into an integrated framework. Each section addresses a major issue and can be read on a stand-alone basis. By providing appropriate economic models and rules for successful transition, this work is designed to encourage a smooth changeover to deregulation. It is important, Tye says, to recognize that the original problems regulation sought to solve do not simply go away, and that new problems can be created by the transition itself. He stresses the need to deal with legacies from the regulated past, such as investments, policies, labor contracts, and sunk investment costs by buyers. He explains why explicit regulatory intervention may be required to correct equity and efficiency imbalances. Sections cover topics such as finance and revenue adequacy, pricing, mergers, and competitive access and will serve as a valuable resource for attorneys, regulatory commission staff, academics, and consultants.

                                    My wife got all of the Carolina books and asked me to read them. Now, I don't go for all this New Age stuff, and had a hard time understanding some of the Wicca, but I admit it was entertaining to read. This book had a good storyline. I liked the old lady.

                                    I started reading the Carolina series to bone up on my Spanish, and because I enjoy women's spirituality based books. I was delighted when I read this one and actually found it to be helpful to me, when I suddenly found myself between jobs. They call this fiction, but it is also fact-based. The magic actually works and I now have a job! Speaking of magic, the author, herself weaves a magical storyline. I feel like Carolina and her family are my family! We share the same problems. I only wish I had a spirit guardian like Dona Carolina. What a crazy old gal!This was by far, my favorite in the series. I can't wait for the next book.

                                    I have read all the Dona Carolina books written so far, and am absolutely enchanted by the characters and by the wealth of knowledge the author conveys. These books are fiction, but also nonfiction and talk about Celtic magic, but also magic for Hispanics. I've never read anything like them. This one talks about the nature of true prosperity and gives all sorts of spells. But it is more responsible than most of the junk that's out there. The characters in the fictional narrative are captivating. I highly recommend this book for readers of all ages.

                                    This is the fourth book in a wonderful series about the adventures of a young, female Hispanic professor, who happens to also be a witch and her family and friends. By using magick, spells, and rituals, and a large dollop of common sense and changes in attitude, and with some hints from her spirit ancestor, Carolina helps her friends and relatives overcome tremendous odds, and prosper. Very entertaining. Highly recommended.

                                        I have just finished reading this book. It thought it started off great. the first chapter had me pumped up and ready to rock! But as I got into the book more, I lost that intensity, mostly due to the very dated content of the book. It focuses on data available in 2001. In my opinion, too much has changed since then to make this a great book. It has historical value and a wider-than-average geographical appeal, but many of the examples are outdated (some of the GREAT companies used as examples, don't even exist anymore). This book needs an update badly.

                                        I work for a high-tech software company and was hoping to find something to help me with software branding. Unfortunately, this book reads like one of my term papers in college - the ones I used to write the night before the exam. If you need an overview of high-tech branding, don't waste your cash. The book is full of examples from Asian companies in the middle of the dot-com gold rush. For today's environment I would recommend timeless classics like "Crossing the Chasm" (although, granted, there is no brand talk there).

                                              What a magnificent book! Dance critic Barbara Newman's GRACE UNDER PRESSURE is not just for serious dance afficionados, though it will be deeply meaningful to the serious student of dance; with its engaging writing style and its emphasis on "grace under pressure," on the lives and techniques of great dancers who became great dance teachers, this book will draw in almost any reader who picks it up. The opening of the book, with its description of discovering both the scrumptious pies at a small town diner, and the sadness of a small-town dance school that has closed down, sets the mood well. This book honors dance teachers everywhere, while it gives voice to the teaching experience and philosophy of some of the greatest. The photographs are well chosen, and a treasure in themselves.
                                              This book deserves a wide readership, and will amply reward those who find their way to it. It reflects the author's depth of knowledge of dance, her perceptiveness and clarity in the interview process, and her accessible, engaging and elegant writing style. Highly recommended!

                                              This book details common sense approaches to different aspects of software development - from defining requirements to development to software testing - that are too often overlooked or undervalued in many software shops. I am a developer, but the book contains a wealth of practical tips and techniques for project managers, developers, QA team members, and functional managers. I highly recommend this book to anyone involved in software development that is looking for ways to improve the quality of the software they deliver. I never write reviews, but for me this book ranks up there with Steve McConnell's Code Complete as one of those books that I am constantly referring to in an ongoing effort to improve my ability to develop quality software.

                                              I received Under Pressure and On Time as a gift
                                              and read through it in a weekend. I found it
                                              funny and full of practical solutions for my own
                                              development team.
                                              The chapter on "scheduling" addressed most all of
                                              my particular challenges with terrific ideas.
                                              I plan to keep a copy and pass along a copy.

                                              Ed Sullivan's summary of the practices that work at NuMega are a must read for any software development organization. Sure, a lot of the comments are just common sense, but from my experiences, they are rarely practiced. The project management section is trivial, obvious and better covered in other references. The details of the steps and the overall process that NuMega has successfully used are the valuable part of the text. Things like insisting on daily builds, test automation, and parallel development are the little gems that can keep you on a schedule.

                                              A lot of people and books talk about this stuff, but few organization, (in my experience) manage to actually follow these methods. I think I would have liked working for Ed at NuMega.

                                              Wow... what a great read... that is, it's a great read if you want to read the same sentiment over and over: Ed Sullivan is a very smart guy, and all the people at NuMega (now Compuware corp.) are geniuses. If you take a look at their current product offerings you might decide that Ed's "philosphy" _might_ not be the best way to go.

                                              Just read the sample pages included here at amazon before you decide to plunk down your money on this obvious ego trip.

                                                      Cadets' planning and judgements were experimentally examined in four simulated rescue operations during military ranger training. We examined the effects of sleep deprivation (SD), affect, time pressure, and need for cognition (NFC) on cadets' planning of a rescue operation, and their self-judgements of security, probability of success, and quality of their plans. Rescue experts judged the cadets' plans with respect to the same three dimensions. In addition, time on task and number of procedural errors were recorded. The results suggest that NFC is related to better performance among sleep-deprived individuals, that procedural knowledge is fairly resilient to SD and time pressure, and that self-judgements seem more fine-graded than expert judgements.

                                                          In prior reports (J.R. Marsden, R. Pakath, K. Wibowo, Decision making under time pressure with different information sources and performance-based financial incentives: Part 1, Decision Support Systems, 34 (2002) 75-97, J.R. Marsden, R. Pakath, K. Wibowo, Decision making under time pressure with different information sources and performance-based financial incentives: Part 2, Decision Support Systems, 34 (2002) 99-124), we describe the design and implementation of a software platform and a laboratory experiment aimed at a preliminary investigation of the efficacy of an alternative communication language for a time-pressured, incentive-driven decision-making setting. Our experimental findings suggest that, despite its relative novelty, the alternative language is at least as effective as the more traditional communication modes of written and spoken English in the specific setting examined, while succinctly conveying what must be conveyed. That work embodies three central underlying constructs-information communication mode, communication speed, and complexity level. The analysis in (J.R. Marsden, R. Pakath, K. Wibowo, Decision making under time pressure with different information sources and performance-based financial incentives: Part 2, Decision Support Systems, 34 (2002) 99-124) focuses solely on mode. In this concluding portion of the research, we analyze the two remaining constructs-speed and complexity level. Taken together with that in (J.R. Marsden, R. Pakath, K. Wibowo, Decision making under time pressure with different information sources and performance-based financial incentives: Part 2, Decision Support Systems, 34 (2002) 99-124), our analysis enables a fuller understanding of the interplay between communication mode, speed, and complexity. We note two particular findings of our research: (1) whereas real-world systems are often designed based on prescriptive tradition, including ''best practice'' criteria widely disseminated and adopted by practitioners without demonstrated benefits to users, in our study, we found that performance at any level of a particular construct was typically sensitive to the levels set for the remaining two attributes, and (2) despite the fact that many experimental studies (e.g., (D.M. Miranda, R. P. Bostrom, The impact of group support systems on group conflict and conflict management, Journal of Management Information Systems, 10 (3), (1993), 63-95, H. Nysveen, P.E. Pedersen, An exploratory study of customers' perception of company web sites offering various interactive applications: moderating effects of customers' Internet experience, Decision Support Systems, 37 (1) (2004), 137-150)) continue to emphasize subject perception over more objective performance measures, in our study, we found that subject preexperimental perceptions did not always coincide with actual experimental outcomes. Our work, like most controlled experimental analyses, is subject to caveats related to limited sample size and specific orderings examined.
