5 out of 5 stars Just in time.......2007-10-17

This book is great for those who have taken statistics already and just need a refresher and for those you learn quickly. Great explaination of content and great examples and excercises.

4 out of 5 stars Schaum's Outline of Probability and Statistics by Murray R Spiegel .......2007-09-19

Schaum's outline books are easy to read, including many
solved problems, and this book is no exception. I recommend
this book to anyone who begins learning statistics.

1 out of 5 stars How can they teach you if they don't even know the right answers?.......2007-07-23

I have been using this book to review for the Actuarial exam, and though it has been a few years since I learned a lot of this, even I can see the blatant typos and errors. Basic editing is part of a decent book, and someone did a terrible job on this one. Aside from the typos in the text itself, far too many of the Solved Problems give a wrong answer! It has been maddening to sit and do and re-do these problems to check my work, and I feel that if the easier/beginning sections have this many problems, I will be screwed when I get to the more advanced sections and can't so easily spot the mistakes. I think it is ridiculous that someone put this book out there, trying to help people learn, and couldn't even double check that it provides correct information.

    5 out of 5 stars Self-study to enjoy.......2007-04-07

Like other mathematical editions of "Schaum's outlines" the second edition of "Probability And Statistics" is again a book, that is perfectly developed for self-study that leeds you to a fundamental understanding of probability and statistics. It is clearly arranged and many tests help you to understand everything of each chapter :-)

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction to the subject & ideal for self-study.......2007-01-01

Probability and statistics can be difficult subjects for students, and this Schaum's outline is very helpful both for explaining the theory and showing lots of numerical examples and practice problems in these very much related disciplines. Since a knowledge of probability is necessary to thoroughly understand statistics, that subject is tackled first, in the first four chapters. Statistics is addressed in the last six chapters of the book. The narrative of this book is very thorough, and intersperses explanations with worked out examples throughout. The book starts with basic probability, moves on through random variables, expectation, and special probability functions such as the binomial and Poisson distributions. In the statistics half of the book, there are chapters on sampling and estimation theory, hypotheses testing, curve fitting, regression, correlation, variance analysis, and finally the more advanced topic of nonparametric testing. Appendices offer some valuable distributions and tables. Of course, if you need to study these subjects more in depth such as expectation and detection or random processes, you are going to need other books for further study. However, at just over 400 pages in length, this book provides a good introduction to the topics of probability and statistics for a fraction of what many less enlightening textbooks cost and it is ideal for self-study. I highly recommend it.

Reflects a decade of technological changes in concrete industry! The newest edition of this popular ASTM publication reflects the latest technology in concrete and concrete-making materials. Six sections cover: (1) General information on the nature of concrete, sampling, variability, and testing laboratories. A new chapter deals with modeling cement and concrete properties. (2) Properties of freshly mixed concrete. (3) Properties of hardened concrete. (4) Concrete aggregates—this section has been revised and the chapters are presented in the order that most concerns concrete users: grading, density, soundness, degradation resistance, petrographic examination, reactivity, and thermal properties. (5) Materials other than aggregates—the chapter on curing materials now reflects the current technology of materials applied to new concrete surfaces. The chapter on mineral admixtures has been separated into two chapters: supplementary cementitious materials and ground slag. (6) Specialized concretes—contains a new chapter on self-consolidating concrete

      Book Description

This book is the result of a spirited debate stimulated by a recent meeting of the Society of Multivariate Experimental Psychology. Although the viewpoints span a range of perspectives, the overriding theme that emerges states that significance testing may still be useful if supplemented with some or all of the following -- Bayesian logic, caution, confidence intervals, effect sizes and power, other goodness of approximation measures, replication and meta-analysis, sound reasoning, and theory appraisal and corroboration. br br The book is organized into five general areas. The first presents an overview of significance testing issues that sythesizes the highlights of the remainder of the book. The next discusses the debate in which significance testing should be rejected or retained. The third outlines various methods that may supplement current significance testing procedures. The fourth discusses Bayesian approaches and methods and the use of confidence intervals versus significance tests. The last presents the philosophy of science perspectives. br br Rather than providing definitive prescriptions, the chapters are largely suggestive of general issues, concerns, and application guidelines. The editors allow readers to choose the best way to conduct hypothesis testing in their respective fields. For anyone doing research in the social sciences, this book is bound to become "must" reading. br

Henkel gives a quick guide to various common probablistic tests used by sociologists. The book is mostly directed towards undergraduate students, who might desire a precis of the subject.

He goes through elementary probability theory. Rolling of dice. What randomness means. The Gaussian [bell] curve of the normal distribution. Chi-square distribution. F distribution. Plus, very importantly, how to test hypotheses with some rigour, given these tools.

While the maths is certainly still as true now as in 1976 when Henkel wrote the book, you may want to consult a more recent and more comprehensive text. The graphics in his book are rather limited. I used texts like that as a student, and they don't bother me. But current students are probably more used to texts using far more elaborate figures. In part this reflects cheaper printing costs. But also overall, it has probably yielded statistics books that are easier to understand.

            Book Description

Adaptive statistical tests, developed over the last 30 years, are often more powerful than traditional tests of significance, but have not been widely used. To date, discussions of adaptive statistical methods have been scattered across the literature and generally do not include the computer programs necessary to make these adaptive methods a practical alternative to traditional statistical methods. Until recently, there has also not been a general approach to tests of significance and confidence intervals that could easily be applied in practice. Modern adaptive methods are more general than earlier methods and sufficient software has been developed to make adaptive tests easy to use for many real-world problems. Applied Adaptive Statistical Methods: Tests of Significance and Confidence Intervals introduces many of the practical adaptive statistical methods developed over the last 10 years and provides a comprehensive approach to tests of significance and confidence intervals.

                  Description:
We measured the short-term (100min) avoidance of a soil heavily polluted by hydrocarbons by the soil springtail Folsomia candida, at six rates of dilution in a control, unpolluted soil. We compared the results with those of long-term (40-day) population tests. Five strains were compared, of varying geographical and ecological origin. When pure, the polluted soil was lethal in the long-term and avoided in the short-term by all strains. Avoidance tests, but not population tests, were able to discriminate between strains. Avoidance thresholds differed among strains. Two ecological consequences of the results were discussed: (i) toxic compounds may kill soil animals or deprive them from food, resulting in death of populations, (ii) pollution spots can be locally deprived of fauna because of escape movements of soil animals. Advantages and limitations of the method have been listed, together with proposals for their wider use in soil ecology and ecotoxicology.

                          Book Description

The history of modern liberalism has been hotly debated in contemporary politics and the academy. Here, Judith Stein uses the steel industry—long considered fundamental to the U.S. economy—to examine liberal policies and priorities after World War II. In a provocative revision of postwar American history, she argues that it was the primacy of foreign commitments and the outdated economic policies of the state, more than the nation's racial conflicts, that transformed American liberalism from the powerful progressivism of the New Deal to the feeble policies of the 1990s.

Stein skillfully integrates a number of narratives usually treated in isolation—labor, civil rights, politics, business, and foreign policy—while underscoring the state's focus on the steel industry and its workers. By showing how those who intervened in the industry treated such economic issues as free trade and the globalization of steel production in isolation from the social issues of the day—most notably civil rights and the implementation of affirmative action—Stein advances a larger argument about postwar liberalism. Liberal attempts to address social inequalities without reference to the fundamental and changing workings of the economy, she says, have led to the foundering of the New Deal state.

This is a great book which gives invaluable, practical advice on increasing salon revenues.

The book concentrates on increasing revenue through retail sales looking at salon design, layout, product, staffing, sales tips, objections, follow up etc.

Carol Phillips really understands customer service, and makes you think about the whole client experience. At every stage she makes suggestions to improve your customer service to build customer loyalty and repeat sales. There is also advice on staff issues, marketing and other management issues.

The book has been carefully structured and the chapter overviews and summaries are useful. It is also well indexed. I now call it the salon bible. Read it.

                                    Book Description

High technology research laboratories are under constant pressure from the governments that support them to generate secondary utilities such as technology transfer and spin-offs. As buyers, such organisations are often used by governments to stimulate innovation by their suppliers, under tight budgetary constraints and within the rigid institutional frameworks applied to public research organisations. This book addresses the design of efficient buyer–supplier contracts within the institutional boundaries faced by the buyer and focuses in particular on vertical buyer–supplier linkages as a source of supplier core competencies in a cost- and technology-driven environment.
Based on a study of manufacturing contracts commissioned by the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN), the book aims to answer two questions. First, what is the most efficient governance structure for organising buyer–supplier relationships, given the presence of specific institutional boundaries, high technological complexity and environmental uncertainty? Secondly, irrespective of the presence of such an efficient governance structure, what type of impact could technology-oriented government contracts have on supplier core competencies?

4 out of 5 stars Does not mention wiki...note publishing date of 2002!!.......2005-12-30

This is a good book on knowledge management. It provides an adequate historical reference and a succinct framework for the opportunities and incentives for KM but it is as of 2002. This book needs updating. It's not bad but is pre-wiki and web images are dated. Buy used...don't spend $40.00.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Powerful book.......2002-10-18

Review of Building the Knowledge Network: Best Practices, Tools, and Techniques for Putting Conversation to Work

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was written in a conversational tone, and pulled together all the different pieces I've been reading in many sources. It starts with a brief history of knowledge sharing/conversation/communications which I found fascinating (and I am not a history buff!). Nancy & Cliff compared the anti-conversational attitudes of the Scientific Management during the Industrial Age, showed how the Hawthorne Studies caused the shift from the organization to the worker, and information systems. With the emergence of computer networks, the knowledge explosion has shown no sign of abating.

They discussed how the lessons of the pioneers of early communities such as the WELL assisted communities of today to flourish. Trust became communities' foundation with open communications offering challenges to community managers/moderators/facilitators.

The authors' inclusion of quotes from the ideas of the "greats" in community building/managing and knowledge management (KM) such as Stephen Denning, Thomas Davenport, Etienne Wenger, Tom Peters, Michael Hammer and Howard Rheingold, among others offered powerful evidence to their premises. Throughout the book are helpful charts, checklists and other graphics.

A whole chapter was devoted to culture and the tools that enable differing cultures. They discussed the three relationships between people and content and the three dimensions of collaboration (the cornerstone of communities).

Another chapter was devoted to external stakeholders and customer relationship management (CRM). They touch on what new skills will be required to operate within online learning and knowledge sharing communities And they touch on what paths our technical future may take and how to integrate all these new technologies.

They see a "collaborative future" from within and without organizations, as globalization becomes more widespread. The day of hoarding knowledge towards power are over, long live the new king of collaboration! This book is for anyone who wants to start an online community and for those who want to reminisce about "the good ole days," for those who want to read about what the big companies are doing, and all in context. "Context" is a word near and dear to my heart-for so often we forget to put information in context, whether in conversation or training. Nancy and Cliff have completed a truly delightful read in their book. I highly recommend it!
