1 out of 5 stars No information on how?.......2007-04-11

I read this book in hope of finding a process by which to follow in order to conduct a benchmarking study. However, I was dissapointed to find out only information and no real process or flow describing how to conduct a benchmarking study.

5 out of 5 stars Global Cases in Benchmarking : Best Practices from Organizat.......2000-04-11

In this book, the most widely recognised author in business benchmarking, Robert C. Camp, provides an overwhelming number of references for those willing to get hands-on information on the process. With its outstanding easy-to-read structure, this book is certainly a "must have" item for a business professional working in this filed.

Contributors to Native Pathways ponder questions about American Indians' participation in the broader market U.S. market highlighting how indigenous peoples have simultaneously adopted capitalist strategies and altered them to suit their own distinct cultural beliefs and practices. Including contributions from historians, anthropologists, and sociologists, Native Pathways offers fresh viewpoints on economic change and cultural identity in twentieth-century Native American communities.

                            Book Description

The Russian occupation of Ukraine under the tsarist and communist regimes exerted a decisive influence on the development of Ukrainian economics. The present collection of essays, written over a ten-year period, explores some of the pertinent issues. The 1917 Revolution can be taken as a logical dividing point for comparing the impact of the two different political and economic systems on the performance of Ukraine's economy and the welfare of its population.

It appears that the effect of the Soviet regime was in general harmful to Ukraine. Relative to other Soviet republics, its economic growth was one of the lowest, and income per capita deteriorated. Despite the inferior performance of the Ukrainian economy, the Soviet regime continued year in and year out the unrequited transfer of part of Ukraine's national income to other regions of the USSR in greater amounts that its tsarist predecessor. Geopolitical considerations were the primary motivation. Analysis of most of the period since World War II suggests that, in order to achieve Soviet political and military goals, Ukrainian authorities had to be left without any real decision-making power, despite official propaganda to the contrary.

In order to integrate Ukraine into the Russian Empire/USSR, it was not enough to control its economy completely: its intellectual base had to be destroyed as well. Before 1917 the imperial establishment tended to appropriate the contributions of Ukrainian scholars to economics — a practice that continued under the Soviets.

The overall conclusion of this study is that Moscow's administration of the Ukrainian economy, regardless of the system in place, was detrimental to its performance and to the population's welfare, and dangerous to the survival of the Ukrainian nation itself.

                              Book Description

In this book, Jean-Pascal Benassy attempts to integrate into a single unified framework dynamic macroeconomic models reflecting such diverse lines of thought as general equilibrium theory, imperfect competition, Keynesian theory, and rational expectations. He begins with a simple microeconomic synthesis of imperfect competition and nonclearing markets in general equilibrium under rational expectations. He then applies this framework to a large number of dynamic macroeconomic models, covering such topics as persistent unemployment, endogenous growth, and optimal fiscal-monetary policies. The macroeconomic methodology he uses is similar in spirit to that of the popular real business cycles theory, but the scope is much wider. All of the models are solved "by hand," making the underlying economic mechanisms particularly clear.

                                  Book Description

An important part of an organization's overall safety and health program involves safety management for contractors. A contractor with a poor safety program can adversely affect quality, productivity, schedules, and overall cost. This book explains how to manage project safety and improve the odds of an injury-free workplace. If project managers are to apply their judgment wisely, they need to know the rationale for each requirement, and how to implement it. They must know what is to be done, who is to do it, and when and how it should be done. The author considers all these factors. Construction Site Safety addresses the fundamental elements of a successful construction safety program. The author explains the industry trends and best practices that enable job site managers or field engineers to understand the necessary steps to ensure that contractors have and follow safety guidelines. This work demonstrates how the 'knowledge economy' can be seen in a new light when considered from a complexity perspective. It stresses the imporance of relationships as a source of - and influence on - information and knowledge creation.

4 out of 5 stars Explains novelty in organizations.......2007-01-09

First, this is the second book in a series edited by edited by Stacey, Griffin, and Patricia Shaw from the Complexity and Management Centre, University of Hertfordshire
                                  * Complexity and Management - Fad or Radical Challenge to Systems Thinking (2000) - Stacey, Griffin, Shaw

                                  * The Paradox of Control in Organizations (2001) -- Streatfield
The series intention is to develop thinking about organizations as Complex Processes of relating vs. as systems. In doing this, the authors clearly expose the failure of mainstream management thinking to explain strategic and organizational phenomena. In place of systemic (mainstream) thinking, are insights gained from complexity science that have been developed into the complex responsive process perspective. This perspective does descriptively address strategic and organizational phenomena and serves as a basis for prescriptive actions. See my review of Complexity and Management.

Second, as with the first book in the series, this is not a book to be "read", it is a book to be "studied." It delves deeply into learning and knowledge creation, the creation of knowledge being the creation of novelty. The radically different views of knowledge between cognitive and behavioral psychology is illuminating.

Stacey offers philosophical, neuroscience, and social science support for the legitimacy of the complex responsive process perspective over the mainstream management thinking. The book is, for the most part, descriptive. There is a comprehensive comparison of the systems thinking and complex responsive process perspectives in the ninth chapter based on what's in the first two books in the series. The tenth and last chapter outlines what the prescriptions might look like. These prescriptions are in the next four books in the series.

The core of this book hones in on learning and knowledge creation, knowledge creation being essential to organization innovation and evolution. The first section deals with the systems thinking perspective. There is a strong case made for the inability of that perspective to explain knowledge creation as well as some insidious aspects of management based on this perspective. The next section provides a comprehensive and robust explanation of the emergence of knowledge from the complex responsive processes of relating.

As in the first book, the content, issues addressed, the perspectives developed are worthy of more than a five star rating. And again, given the newness and challenging nature of the content, the repetition, or repetitive summaries, throughout the book were welcome. The reason for rating it four stars is due to the need to study it so intently in order to gain the understanding of what the author has to tell us. As in the first book in the series, more and better frameworks could have been provided for the information delivered. Given my intense interest in the subject, I developed several of my own frameworks to organize the content in order to gain greater benefit from the information provided.
