1 out of 5 stars Very confusing, disappointing.......2007-05-31

I've always used Princton Review for my test prep, but this was all they had at the bookstore, so it's what I purchased.

    Besides being extremely confusing

methods and formulas that they tell you to use on one page, if you try to apply them to a problem on the next page it won't work.

And though I'm only on page 60 of it so far, I've already found four mistakes in the answers for it's section reviews.

I would never ever suggest this review guide to anyone, and am very sorry I deviated from my usual brand.

    4 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Review.......2006-07-24

I've been trusting Barron's prep books since I started studying for the SAT, so I bought this book in Taiwan despite its previous editions did not receive many comforting remarks. While reading it, I find it comprehensive enough for even a freshmen like me to understand every little detail in math problem solving. Therefore, I do not regret buying this book!

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars poorly written and poorly edited..........2005-04-19

I was not at all satisfied with this book. The explanations are unclear and hard to understand. There are many qustions pertaining errors where the correct answer is not one of the choices shown! The practice tests are much harder then the actual test itself. This book was poorly written and poorly edited. I am right now in the process of purchasing a different comanies review book. I highly recommend any other book over Barrons.

    2 out of 5 stars Hmmm............2004-12-05

It teaches things the hard way. Explanations are not clear, it is loooooong, boring, could improve. I personally could not trust the info provided by the book because some things were wrong.
Examples and exams are WAY difficult than the real test. This is annoying for those of us who get anxious if we score 440 on the practice test. Today in the real test I bet I got near 600, and definitely NOT thanks to the book, but to the unvaluable lessons of math at school.
Specially if you are not American / English native speaker, you will find this book hard.I read the whole book and tried studying from it. In the end, I got nothing out of it.
Men, I wish someone could write a decent Math IC Book, once and for all.

1 out of 5 stars old fashioned book, old fashioned tests.......2004-06-21

Last three editions of this book are all the same, buy an older version, or better, don't buy at all!

    2 out of 5 stars ugh.......2004-03-22

i suggest you use it for the practice tests, but this book lacks clarity. most of the lessons are difficult to understand and the writers often skip vital steps "expecting" their readers to already know them. im actually looking for a new book right now...

5 out of 5 stars Math is cool!.......2003-11-05

Make sure you know trigonometry because that is the hardest part on the test.

REA's Test Preparation series includes study guides for all academic levels in almost all disciplines. Students from countries around the world seeking to attend college in the United States will find the assistance they need in REA's publications. For college students seeking advanced degrees, REA publishes test preps for many major graduate school admission examinations in a wide variety of disciplines, including engineering, law, and medicine. Students at every level, in every field, with every ambition can find what they are looking for among REA's publications.

While most test preparation books present practice tests that bear little resemblance to the actual exams, REA's series presents tests that accurately depict the official exams in both degree of difficulty and types of questions. REA's practice tests are always based upon the most recently administered exams, and include every type of question that can be expected on the actual exams.

REA's publications and educational materials are highly regarded and continually receive an unprecedented amount of praise from professionals, instructors, librarians, parents, and students. Our authors are as diverse as the fields represented in the books we publish. They are well-known in their respective disciplines and serve on the faculties of prestigious high schools, colleges, and universities throughout the United States and Canada.

      ABOUT THE TEST

Who Takes the Test and What Is It Used For?
Students planning to attend college take the SAT II: Math Level IC Subject Test for one of two reasons:

      (1) Because it is an admission requirement of the college or university to which they are applying;
      OR
      (2) To demonstrate proficiency in Mathematics.

The SAT II: Math Level IC exam is designned for students who have taken more than three years of college preparatory mathematics (two years of algebra and one year of geometry).

      Who Administers The Test?
The SAT II: Math Level IC Subject Test is developed by the College Board and administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS). The test development process involves the assistance of educators throughout the country, and is designed and implemented to ensure that the content and difficulty level of the test are appropriate.

When Should the SAT II: Math Level IC be Taken?
If you are applying to a college that requires Subject Test scores as part of the admissions process, you should take the SAT II: Math Level IC Subject Test by November or January of your senior year. If your scores are being used only for placement purposes, you may be able to take the test in the spring. For more information, be sure to contact the colleges to which you are applying.

When and Where is the Test Given?
The SAT II: Math Level IC Subject Test is administered five times a year at many locations throughout the country; mostly high schools. The test is given in November, December, January, May, and June.

To receive information on upcoming administrations of the exam, consult the publication Taking the SAT II: Subject Tests, which may be obtained from your guidance counselor or by contacting:

      College Board SAT Program

      Princeton, NJ 08541-6200
      Phone: (609) 771-7600

Financial assistance may be granted in certain situations. To find out if you qualify and to register for assistance, contact your academic advisor.

What Kind of Calculator Can I Use?
Your calculator should be, at the minimum, a scientific calculator. It can be programmable or non-programmable. Bear in mind, however, that for perhaps 60 percent of the test items, the calculator will afford you no advantage and, moreover, may actually work against you. No pocket organizers, hand-held minicomputers, paper tape, or noisy calculators may be used. In addition, no calculator requiring an external power source will be allowed. Finally, no sharing of calculators will be permitted - you must bring your own.

Make sure you are thoroughly familiar with the operation of your calculator before the test. Your performance on the test could suffer if you spend too much time searching for the correct function on your calculator.

      HOW TO USE THIS BOOK

      What Do I Study First?
Remember that the SAT II: Math Level IC Subject Test is designed to test knowledge that has been acquired throughout your education. Therefore, the best way to prepare for the exam is to refresh yourself by thoroughly studying our review material and taking the sample tests provided in this book. They will familiarize you with the types of questions, directions, and format of the SAT II: Math Level IC Subject Test.

The course review includes the information you need to know when taking the exam. Be sure to take the remaining practice tests to further test yourself and become familiar with the format of the SAT II: Math Level IC Subject Test.

      When Should I Start Studying?
It is never too early to start studying for the SAT II: Math Level IC test. The earlier you begin, the more time you will have to sharpen your skills. Do not procrastinate! Customer Reviews:

      1 out of 5 stars A waste of money.......2003-04-15

I gave myself enough time to review with this book, but it didn't help me at all. I wound up desperately searching for my old school notes to help me understand what the book was trying to explain. I struggled to absorb the information in the book because there was so much of it, and after I took the test I found out that most of it was extraneous. I got a 630 on the test, and while that isn't a terrible score, I bought the book in hopes of working up to somewhere near a 700. I could have gotten a 630 on my own, without wasting my money on this book.
There has to be a better review book than this. Try as hard as you can to find something else.

1 out of 5 stars Far too comprehensive to be helpful!.......1999-12-28

I've been teaching SAT and SAT II courses professionally for around 5 years, and I can honestly say that this title was one of the least-popular and least-helpful books I have EVER used. The title (or sub-title) of the book states that this is the most comprehensive title available -- that's the problem. It's far TOO comprehensive. It includes lots and lots of information that has never been on the test, and that is very unlikely to appear on the test in the future. (If you learn EVERY word in the dictionary, you're sure to get a good verbal score on the SAT, but there are FAR more effective ways to INTELLIGENTLY improve your vocabulary!) To make matters worse, it seems to have been written BY math lovers FOR math lovers and is nearly incomprehensible to someone who's not a math lover. Hey, if you love math, then you don't need a prep book for the SAT II in the first place! The book has way too much information to absorb, the practice tests are unrealistically difficult, and there's no easy way to use only selected portions of the book (for an abbreviated prep based upon the most important concepts, for example). This book feels like a desk reference for mathematics, not a study guide.

In my classes and tutoring, I've found that the books by the big test prep companies (Princeton Review and Kaplan) are concise, accurate, and logically arranged. If forced to choose, I give the Princeton Review title a slight edge above the Kaplan book, but both are excellent titles. I suggest getting both the Princeton Review and the Kaplan titles -- compared to a prep course or college tuition, they're an amazingly inexpensive investment.

How much did I dislike this book? After reading the title, I bought a dozen of them to use with my students -- but after using it for one group of students, I ended up shipping all of the unused copies back. These criticisms apply to both the Math IC and IIC books -- I don't know about the rest of the books for the other subject tests.

A social, economic, and political study of Philadelphia merchants, this study presents both the spirit and statistics of merchant life. Doerflinger studies the Philadelphia merchant community from three perspectives: their commercial world, their confrontation with the Revolution and its aftermath, and their role in diversifying the local economy. The analysis of entrepreneurship dominates the study and challenges long-standing assumptions about American economic history.

                              Book Description

This fascinating book brings fresh insight to the debate on the role of the countryside in the industrialization process. By providing an integrated study of an upland area, the North Yorkshire Pennines, the study is able to address two key issues concerning the countryside: how well it responded to the challenge of industrialization and urbanization and how successful it was in surviving in an increasingly industrial country. By using previously unexploited private papers in conjunction with national sources, the author is uniquely able to demonstrate the mechanisms of rural response. Wensleydale and Swaledale are an ideal area to study as they are contiguous and superficially similar and yet, as this book shows, enjoyed or endured very different experiences. This book challenges many of the traditional views about the role of the countryside. By measuring the wealth of the two dales it demonstrates how landownership and farmholding patterns coupled with developing dairy and livestock production enabled some communities to retain their vitality while successfully responding to unprecedented change. It shows how pre-industrial craft occupations and a by-employment textile industry survived for most of the period and how the existence of a volatile mining industry could both enhance and threaten that response. Finally the book shows how transport and migration were key facilitators in the process of response.

                                Book Description

The book takes an innovative approach to promotional strategy and focuses on the integration of the entire promotion mix, not just advertising. As with prior editions, this edition is built on a solid behavioral foundation.

The authors' conviction is that advertising, trade promotion, consumer promotion, personal selling, direct marketing, public relations and publicity, and corporate advertising are all component parts of one integrated promotional mix. Today, most other authors and marketing practitioners also advocate this integrated marketing communication approach.

The book presents numerous practical, real-world examples, illustration, advertisements and cases and has been thoroughly updated and expanded to include topics of greatest importance to today's students and marketing practitioners.

A thorough discussion of the Internet for advertising and direct marketing is presented and media promotion and utilization statistics have been updated through 1999.

This volume points out how security documents and standards are key elements in the business process that should never be undertaken to satisfy a perceived audit or security requirement. Instead, policies, standards, and procedures should exist only to support business objectives or mission requirements; they are elements that aid in the execution of management policies. The book emphasizes how information security must be integrated into all aspects of the business process. It examines the 12 enterprise-wide (Tier 1) policies, and maps information security requirements to each. The text also discusses the need for top-specific (Tier 2) policies and application-specific (Tier 3) policies and details how they map with standards and procedures. It may be tempting to download some organization's policies from the Internet, but Peltier cautions against that approach. Instead, he investigates how best to use examples of policies, standards, and procedures toward the achievement of goals. He analyzes the influx of national and international standards, and outlines how to effectively use them to meet the needs of your business.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Policy Reference.......2005-05-19

This is a useful book for me to reference, especially when I deal with challenges in security policy framework review. The most impressive pages include the tier 1-2-3 framework, proper wordings in policy, policy sample studies and analysis, complete checklist and questionnaire.

After reading this book or on-and-off reference, I always remember four major elements in a policy:
                                  1. Topic
                                  2. Scope
                                  3. Responsibility
                                  4. Compliance

In addition, I have shared this book with an IT supervisor, he always go for this book for the team reference. I do feel happy to recommend it. Moreover, it readily happens to me I could apply the hints and tips from this book to the revised policy. Meanwhile, compared with the company's policy, it is undoubted organized and logical.

Be honest, in reality, many people still always mix up policy, standard and procedures as well as guidelines and produce a "Spaghetti-like" document to deal with auditor and compliance once a year only, you could say, many companies treat it as a last-minute homework.

                                  5 out of 5 stars A true practitioner's reference.......2004-08-06

This is one of the best books available for information systems security polices. The book covers tier 1 and tier 2 policies. This book looks at policies as a business enabler where policies support management's organizational goals. Great samples!

                                  2 out of 5 stars look elsewhere.......2002-08-23

I must agree with the previous reviewer, this book is lacking.
I bought a copy new and had the same problem where the
holes punched in the paper does not match the binder spacing.
What terrible quality. I had to force myself to even read
                                  through the book after that.

And I found it lacking. The first part has some good info
about how to write a policy. Good but not great.

The second part was a sample policy/standard/procedure rolled
into one. I found it too thin and missing too much to be
                                  really useful.

I haven't looked at the text the previous reviewer recommends,
but I have to say, given another book with similar content,
definitely stay away from this one.

My personal recommendation is Information Security Policies
Made Easy, by Charles Cresson Wood. It's pricey but oh so
                                  worth it.

While this is a good reference, it's value does not match its price. The entire book in not included on the CD and the book does not include a "complete" set of policies. It is certainly enough to get you started, but not enough to complete the task.

If you are considering buying a used copy from an amazon marketplace seller as I did, be careful. The pages did not fit the binder and the CD was missing its setup file. I had to return it.

If you need assistance with security policies and procedures, take a look at Thomas Peltier's other book, Information Security Policies, Procedures and Standards: Guidelines for Effective Information Security Management. It contains almost all of the same material, at a much more reasonable price.
