Book Description

"Gerry Bracey cuts a useful trail through the thicket of educational change that is beset by irresponsible research and highly questionable measurement of learning. By offering examples of misused data and tests, he builds a way to better understanding of these realms by the public."
Harold Howe II, Former high school principal
Hanover, NH

"An American treasure! Bracey sometimes seems to be a modern Don Quixote, fighting lonely battles against the enemies of public education. In this book he explains how to examine anti-school propaganda, spot distortions and inaccuracies, and determine what’s really true. It’s necessary knowledge for anyone who believes in public education."
Ron Brandt, Former Executive Editor, ASCD

"A skeptics joy! Bracey offers straightforward examples and hard-hitting prose that teach the intricacies of interpreting educational data."
David C. Berliner, Dean and Regents’ Professor
College of Education, Arizona State University, Tempe

Interpreting what research data REALLY tells us.

Learn to effectively navigate the maze of competing agendas for public education from Gerald W. Bracey, nationally known policy analyst, researcher, and author of the periodic Bracey Report on the Condition of Education. He demystifies the educational data surrounding America's public schools, providing the guide to help educators become better, more critical readers of facts, figures, charts, and graphs.

In this handy question-and-answer format, Bracey looks at nine tough questions and backs up answers with thoughtful explanation. A brief historical look at America's loss of confidence in public schools in presented to show how data have been used to create half-truths and erroneous positions. In addition, the most common test forms are analyzed, illuminating their strengths and weaknesses.

Key issues include:

Interpreting educational research data
Exploring and understanding tests
SAT facts and fictions
Private schools vs. public schools
Teacher and administrator accountability
This guide is a must-have for educators to better understand and respond to tough questions asked by parents, students, and the community about public school education in America today.

1 out of 5 stars How to deny the truth - step by step.......2003-04-16

Oh, come on. Does Bracey really believe that by attacking the imperfect nature of all statistics he can convince anyone the painfully obvious is not true? There is really a very clear pattern to all these "flawed" statistics. These are not really very subtle problems here.

That he feels it is helpful to the current situation to offer a step by step guide to avoiding the facts is sad. That he believes the kind obfuscation and cheap technical bullying he suggests will actually work shows how far from the real world he has strayed. Read this book and see if you cannot picture having to restrain yourself from laughing in the face of anyone actually putting forward the technical defenses he offers. Here is a possible exchange: "According to the Brookings Institutes study, there are no predominantly minority Public Schools in the NY inner city where 70% of the students are reading at their level, while their are 37 parochial/private schools (16 of which are well above 90%). " Bracey's answer: "How was the variable defined?" I'll tell him how the variable was defined. The children, particularly the most vulnerable, that we have entrusted to our public schools cannot read.

1 out of 5 stars Don't look to be bailed out - be accountable.......2003-04-16

The title of this book is appropriate. It is designed as a guide for defenders of an indefensiable system who are not looking for solutions but for a way to be bailed out. It is actually filled with shockingly blatant advice on to how to childishly avoid the stark truth by using technical jargon and various tricks to bring any of the dense thicket of negative statistics crying out against the status quo into question. Using the standards he wishes to hold negative statistics to before admitting them is to abandon all statistics as a policy tool. Unfortunately this problem has long passed the point of subtle stastical trends which could be debated. It is clearly visable, and the statistics he wishes to dismiss are not an illusion.

Look at the web sites of any major public policy think tank (Brookings, Hoover, Rand, etc) or read any of the numerous serious studies and books on this subject if you want the scales to drop from your eyes. The consensus on this issue is clear and very specific as to what is wrong and how it got that way - at least among the think tanks. Mr Bracey should be ashamed of himself for creating a guidebook to help those who can make a difference blind themselves to what the world already knows. That we have failed our children, especiually the most vulnerable, and our unions, educators and progressive parties, caught up in political squabbles and vying interests, have resisted any effort to right this terrible wrong.

Fixing problems vs denying problems - hmmm, I wonder which tactic we owe our nations children?

From the author: The conventional burn-in test, which only collects go/no go (or time-to-failure) data over short testing periods becomes rather ineffective for highly reliable products. This decision problem can be solved if there exists a suitable quality characteristic whose degradation over time can be related to the product's lifetime. An innovative approach to determine the burn-in policy by using a suitable degradation model has been suggested in the literature. However, a major disadvantage of this procedure is that it only uses information contained in current degradation data, and it ignores any information given by the entire sequence of observations. Thus, it becomes relatively insensitive to detecting weak items if the degradation path of the product degrades very slowly. To remedy this weakness, similar to the CUSUM control charting scheme in statistical process control, we propose an integrated Wiener process to model the cumulative degradation path of the product's quality characteristic. Then the optimal burn-in policy can be easily obtained. In addition, we also use an analytic approach to compare the efficiency of our proposed procedure with the method that is previously reported in the literature.

5 out of 5 stars An oasis of clarity and fresh ideas.......2002-09-05

This is one of the most rigorously produced management books I have ever read. The authors are meticulous in their approach, taking the reader carefully along with them as they build their argument in a series of logical steps. Each step is rigorously built: words are given precise meanings, no unqualified assumptions are made and there is no room at all for loose opinion. Inevitably their strictly logic approach leads the reader into some potentially difficult areas. For example, if you really want to understand how to create value, then you will need to know what this term actually means. Other books prefer to avoid the hassle of nailing down the meaning behind such fuzzy concepts (anyway, that's accounting not strategy, right?). This book takes these topics on because to do otherwise would be to fail to deliver the promise in the book's title.
On top of that, the book challenges current strategic thinking. It takes a (logically-reasoned) resource-based approach to business strategy and by doing so comes up with some very useful new frameworks that will help companies reveal market segments that may previously have been hidden to them. If it sounds like the book may be too heavy and scientific, then think again. The authors strive all the way through to use clear language and explanation. The book adds the rigour that is missing from the 'airport business book' genre without going too far into an academic style, which often tends to lose touch with readers' ability, or even reality itself.
The irony is that I bought it at an airport.

5 out of 5 stars Strategic thinking for the New E.conomy.......1999-09-16

Very thought provoking and insightful, this captivating book forces you to re-think the rules of corporate and competitive strategy. It is becoming more essential for organisations to differentiate their offerings, everything from long distance telephone calls to soft drinks are turning into a commodity. The authors present various methods that organisations can use to differentiate their offerings, the very simple but powerful service/merchandise matrix is a good way to start thinking about product, service and brand positioning. I would thoroughly recommend this, sometimes controversial yet challenging customer focused book, it helps you to look beyond the constraints of conventional wisdom.

5 out of 5 stars Clinical language and a real framework.......1998-08-11

Unlike most strategy books, Creating Value does not simply fill the pages with what often appears to inconclusive discussion supported by case studies. This formula popular with what might be the 'Airport bookshop school of management is the antithesis of Creating Value. Mathur and Kenyon seek first to carlify terminology, and subsequently, establish a workable framework. Their views are quickly seductive and clear. The final impression is a well researched and and thoughtful book, that aims to address the real problems of strategy rather than simply debate them. I would heartily recommend it.

              5 out of 5 stars ORIGINAL THINKING.......1997-11-09

The concepts described in this book are extremely thought provoking. The words used carry the original messages to the manager who hears these concepts "nth hand".

                Book Description

Mira Wilkins, the foremost authority on foreign investment in the United States, continues her magisterial history in a work covering the critical years 1914-1945.

Wilkins includes all long-term inward foreign investments, both portfolio (by individuals and institutions) and direct (by multinationals), across such enterprises as chemicals and pharmaceuticals, textiles, insurance, banks and mortgage providers, other service sector companies, and mining and oil industries. She traces the complex course of inward investments, presents the experiences of the investors, and examines the political and economic conditions, particularly the range of public policies, that affected foreign investments. She also offers valuable discussions on the intricate cross-investments of inward and outward involvements and the legal precedents that had long-term consequences on foreign investment.

At the start of World War I, the United States was a debtor nation. By the end of World War II, it was a creditor nation with the strongest economy in the world. Integrating economic, business, technological, legal, and diplomatic history, this comprehensive study is essential to understanding the internationalization of the American economy, as well as broader global trends.

The primary purpose of marketing research is to gather information which will allow your company or organisation to make better, more informed decisions. Many textbooks have been published on marketing research but most are very quantitative and are also too detailed for students taking a one-semester course, they do not focus on important qualitative issues such as depth interviews and focus groups - Baines and Chansarkar redress this imbalance. Written as an introduction to marketing research for students taking a one-semester module Introducing Market Research includes chapters on business to business marketing research and Internet marketing research. The authors adopt a practical focus and include numerous practical examples as well as coursework assignments.

                        Description:
Firms engaged in consumer product sales often implement a strict make-to-stock approach, applying a single price to all customers. In such systems, customers can get the product at the given price upon availability on the shelf. However, consumers can often tolerate a delay between order placement and demand satisfaction under a price discount. Recognizing this phenomenon, a supplier may consider offering a menu of delivery-price options to consumers, where longer delay-time options imply lower prices. Demands from customers willing to wait provide advance demand information to the supplier. This paper studies strategies to exploit this additional information to improve profitability and service levels. Primarily assuming that delivery times are set exogenously, we determine optimal prices and stock levels under the new delayed demand satisfaction options. In addition, we develop analytical models to characterize the system performance gains under the new demand fulfillment option.

For the past several decades, a climate of deregulation has encompassed industries ranging from public utilities to mass transportation. Harry Martin Trebing has been at the forefront of this debate as one of the foremost specialists in the world in the field of public utility regulation. Samuels and Miller have collected a series of articles that assess Trebing's theories on public utility regulation while examining his towering contribution to the field.

3 out of 5 stars Good information, very dry.......2007-02-18

This book has good information but is very, very dry. I had to fight very hard to not fall asleep at times.

Kovacich does make some very good points about balancing the information security needs with the needs of the business. He also stress that information security needs to utilize existing business processes and be aligned with the goals of the organization. This is the best material he provides and details in several chapters.

                                    1 out of 5 stars Incoherent gobblydegook.......2006-09-01

There's simply nothing useful in this book. One would have to have never heard of the Internet or the Web, and never to have worked anywhere, to benefit from it. The author repeats infosec and management bromides ad nauseum, waves the bloody flag of 9/11 to puff up the importance of the field, and introduces new acronyms faster than the Pentagon.

It's also frequently incomprehensible, due to the author's poor control of English grammar.

If you're in infosec, don't let your bosses read this -- they may think you're as full of hot air as Kovacich.

Also note that at least 3 of the 5 star reviews below are by sometime coauthors of Kovacich.

2 out of 5 stars Not for the INFOSEC professional.......2006-06-16

I personally think this book (actually having read it impartially) is not good for any Information Security professional, corporate or government (IA, IAM, IASO, ISSO, ect), but, if you had to place it in any category I guess it would be in the business management end of communication compliance (maybe for a Policy Compliance Officer). Also I really think that some of the other reviewers here must have been working to promote this book. I unfortunately say this because the author creates entirely too many unique and extremely complex management policy theories on communication development, which frankly gets way off the subject of INFOSEC, and even has him chasing his own tail in the narrated scenarios. The author even goes so far as to concoct and create possibly 20-30 new acronyms (as if you didn't have enough already as a real INFOSEC professional), which almost became a little comedic by the end of the book, especially when hearing even the author try recap each chapter and make each new theory tie into another new theory. Although I'm sure the author is a very distinguished professional in his own right, I unfortunately found this book weak to incorporate into any of my perceived Information Security plans. Do yourself a favor and skip this one and move onto the next, and make sure the books you choose on this topic do not try to reinvent the wheel.

5 out of 5 stars The Security Officers must have book.......2004-01-08

Once again Dr. Kovacich has excelled. He has produced an updated version of already 'must have' book for any information security officer. It is the sort of book that is useful to both the experienced information security officer and to the person who is new to the area. The book is written in a format that makes it very readable and also that you can easily find that piece of information that you can remember seeing but can't exactly recall where..

I wish that he had been writing this type of book when I first started out in the Infosec field. If you only buy one information security book - make sure it is this one.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Practitioner's perspective.......2003-11-25

Dr. Kovacich has updated one of the classic management works for the people who are responsible for the overal design, development and delivery of a comprehensive, enterprise-wide protection program. There are lots of books out there that will assist those who have technical responsibilities for security in doing a better job. There are very few that help develop the manager's who must harmonize people, processes and technology to address the rapidly increasing range of risks that can impact organizations that are all becoming ever more dependent on information technology to accomplish their objectives. If you are now or aspire to be a manager or director of information security for an organization this is an essential guidebook that will advise and assist you in meeting the challenges inherent in that role.
