5 out of 5 stars Small Business Sourcebook (SBS) is a Gale Group publication.......2001-04-03

This is an excellent starting point to put your business plans into motion. Let SBS help you to achieve your small business goals. The geographical scope of SBS encompasses the U.S. and Canada and contains a master index that precedes both volumes.

The arrangement of this reference source is divided into four sections in two concise volumes: Small Business Profiles, Topics in Small Business, State Listings, and Federal Government Assistance.

Generally, if topics aren't specifically related to small business, they are not included. This is a handy source of information for business owners, managers, operators, and entrepreneurs, and one that provides one-stop-shopping. There are over 330 small business profiles that act as a kind of industry insider guide.

For example, you own a bookstore and have an idea or business plan to open a gourmet coffee/tea house or to add a computer store within that establishment. Suppose you have an idea to open a small business in the swimming pool/hotub industry. Information can be found in SBS regarding licensing for a new business, fees, contacts, and state listings that will also include the chamber of commerces of each location.

If you want to find a consultant, a seminar, a convention, or trade show related to your business' interests, it will be in SBS. Where can you find government funding for a minority owned business? What about women owned businesses? This source is the best starting point because it also lists special libraries and resource centers specific to each subject in the area of small business.

Entrepreneurs use SBS to find the criteria they must meet to receive federal government assistance programs. Entries are arranged numerically and are easy to use. Sometimes licensing issues and fees vary from state to state and often ask for different prerequisites. The Small Business Sourcebook is a reference tool that all small business owners ought to familiarize themselves with.

This source can be rated as a highly reliable source of information that has been carefully compiled, gathered and disseminated. The Gale Group has produced a source that is highly recommendable. Small Business Sourcebook is a standard reference book in most public libraries as well as a standard in such special libraries related to business, can be found in business resource centers, and in top business school libraries.

    Book Description

Every year hundreds of thousands of new small businesses open. According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Statistics and Research Center, small businesses in the United States, represent more than 99% of all employer firms and employ 51% of all private workers. According to the Small Business Administration, nearly 2/3 of college students say they intend to be entrepreneurs at some point in their careers. Nevertheless, business schools and textbooks offer little in the way of guidance for future entrepreneurs. Beyond contacting the SBA, most people are at a loss to find the current and accurate information they need to start and manage a small business. This guide offers invaluable assistance to those who wish to start or have already embarked upon a small business enterprise. With a step-by-step approach, it takes users through a process of planning, establishing, growing, maintaining, and even exiting a small business. By identifying and describing hundreds of the best information sources in print and on the Web for each step of the business building process, it puts information vital to business success at your fingertips, enabling you to locate and use data from a wide range of resources. Chapters cover: Are You an Entrepreneur? Gathering Information and Statistics; Start Up; Your Business Plan; The Ups and Downs of Franchising; Raising Capital; Marketing and Advertising; Management; Personnel/Human Resources; Legal/Taxes; Working with the Government; Competitive Analysis; Growing Your Business and Moving On. In addition, there is a glossary of small business terms; and a detailed index concludes the guide. A first (and last) stop for any small business owner or would-be entrepreneur, this is a handy ready reference for librarians, and an essential collection development tool.

                          Book Description

When you are self-employed, you are the business! Because your success is often based on your relationships with clients, suppliers, and the community, sales skills are essential. However, many self-employed people are not secure or comfortable with their selling abilities. In Sales for the Self-Employed, author Martin Edic reveals to readers his six step action process that ensures every sale.
Writing from his own experience as a small business owner, Edic explains that many people dislike sales because of a general misunderstanding about what sales really is. ?Selling is not talking people into things they don?t want,? says Edic, ?selling is offering them solutions to problems they face and making it easy for them to acquire these solutions.?Edic includes information about prospecting, customer profiling, telephone sales, follow-up, and improving your product. Other chapters include:

                          First Contact
                          Fear and Rejection
                          Your Sales Plan
NegotiationDivided into three sections, Sales for the Self-Employed is a sales-instruction guide for both the non-sales professional and the professional with substantial sales experience.

                            Book Description

This book illuminates British imperial policy after World War II in the context of economic policy and offers a novel argument about the end of the British empire. Economic discrimination in the empire in the late 1940s and early 1950s sustained Britain's recovery, when political control in the colonies was feasible. Subsequently, economic liberalization and the move towards financial cosmopolitanism, combined with rising constraints for economic and political management in the colonies, loosened and ultimately severed Britain's imperial link.

                                  5 out of 5 stars A good primer.......2003-04-10

This is the second guide I've bought from Wetfeet (the other was Careers in entertainment), and so far, they haven't let me down. The editorial team is top-notch over there. they really do a good job at helping me visualize and place myself within specific jobs as well as understand the full spectrum of what's possible for someone with my background (in PR) to cross-over into in terms of job roles. i'm now pretty sure the Ad world is for me. thanks a bunch for boiling all of the info floating around out there down into a succinct guide that gives me the most important stuff to prepare me for my interviews.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction to the Biz.......2003-03-05

I really enjoyed reading this informative guide. Not only was it packed with helpful information, but it was written in a fun, upbeat style that didn't put me to sleep and got me really excited about my decision to change careers.

The vocab section was a great way to get accustomed to the industly lingo. I'll sound like a pro by the time my interviews come up. The company profiles provided a good start for company research and the job descriptions helped me get a good idea of where I want to be.

This is a great buy for anyone thinking about a career in advertising.

                                      Book Description

The pace of change in the business world is becoming faster. This book provides a detailed account of the network-like organizational forms that some firms are adopting to make themselves more flexible and responsive to changing technologies and customer demands. As these organizations become more pervasive, the winners will be those firms that develop the specific capabilities that are needed to thrive in a networked world. Paradoxically, such capabilities are developed not only at the firm level, but also in the relationships the firm has with its external network and in the operating units within the firm. This perspective has implications for the 'resource-based view of the firm' in the field of strategic management, suggesting that the development of capabilities is a more complex and multi-level process than was traditionally thought. This book brings together eleven chapters, each focusing on a particular aspect of capability development in the networked firm. It is based on research in five big Swedish firms (Ericsson, Volvo, Skandia, Pharmacia and Upjohn, SE Banken) as well as a number of other well-known firms such as HP and ABB. The book will be essential reading for advanced students in strategy and international business wanting to keep abreast of current thinking and company practices.

Between phones, networks, equipment, and vendors, being a telecom manager can be a difficult task. Using four companies' actual experiences as case studies, The Telecom Manager's Survival Guide presents an easily understandable method for lining up the best possible services, putting the right tools in place, and saving the business money.

The book takes a practical approach, providing a proactive system for: * Project management for the implementation of new services * Trouble resolution for equipment * Billing audit and reviews * Strategic planning for the future

The Telecom Manager's Survival Guide is an important resource for anyone taking charge of their organization's telecommunications initiatives.
