    Rx for improved teaching!

Gain valuable insight into how to be a more sensitive and effective teacher by analyzing the mistakes of other teachers. Learn how to avoid the most prevalent and hurtful mistakes so that students can be more successful learners.

Some teachers do and say things that traumatize students, leaving them psychologically scarred from childhood on into adulthood. Carolyn Orange has collected over 300 scenarios from teachers recounting their worst experiences as students. In 25 Biggest Mistakes Teachers Make and How to Avoid Them, she presents brief scenarios in the former students’ own words and follows each with an Rx — a prescription for a better solution. These recommendations are based on the author’s many years of teaching and sound educational theory.

The scenarios are organized into six sections:

The solutions and recommendations provide teachers with a map to successfully navigate the academic terrain. Whether used for professional and staff development workshops or as a tool for individual teachers, this book offers alternative strategies that will help create better teachers.

Hard as it to admit, these types of teacher mistakes are still occuring. Being humans, it is difficult to admit to our foibles without becoming defensive. This book provides a safe arena to recognize our mistakes, perhaps on a lesser scale then the scenarios presented, and understand the impact our actions have on others. If you feel you would never commit any of these mistakes, perhaps by it for the staff lounge as reading material for someone else.

1 out of 5 stars Waist of Money!.......2002-05-17

This book is obviously so out dated and boring! I couldn't give it away! I would bet all the reviews giving this book excellent reviews were written by students of the author who wanted to make points with her. I can't think of any teacher today with all the training received who would actualy do any of the things mentioned. I would give this book half a star if I could. One star was for the author's effort!

    3 out of 5 stars Unsure.......2002-02-15

I found this book to be shocking. It seemed like one nightmare after antoher. Most of the situations seemed to involve either physical or emotional abuse. Most teachers will not need to read this book. It might be useful for teachers that have been put on probation or some other sort of sanction. I hope that none of the teachers in this book are still teaching.

    1 out of 5 stars You mean I SHOULDN'T beat my students?!?.......2002-01-09

The "mistakes" Orange details border on criminal--sexual harassment, affairs with students, corporeal punishment. If you're looking for a book to keep you from getting fired or put behind bars, perhaps you might find this book useful. But if you're a non-deviant teacher looking to actually improve your teaching style and your rapport with students, look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars teacher must have.......2001-12-13

This book by Dr. Orange is a book all who teach need to read before they step into a class room. Some of the scenarios are shocking. The scariest part is that most everyone can relate to some of these scenarios. Any person that goes into teaching should be made aware of how much they are affecting another persons life. This book illustrates how not to make the same mistakes these teachers made.A must read!!!

                      4 out of 5 stars Good guide.......2006-11-11

This one may not get you 40% but it does tell you a unique trick with the IRAs. you can flip real estate over and over again without paying immediate taxes. the downside? you can't withdraw your earnings but for long term, it is awesome. the book talks about tax liens being used for IRAs, though I agree with that, do not use this book to learn about tax liens or tax sales, or you're gonna get burned. read up on Investing Without Losing (ISBN 0978834607 NOT on amazn, other stores) or something similar.

2 out of 5 stars Other sources are better for 1031 information.......2006-03-20

Perhaps the author is much more gifted as a seminar speaker than he is as a writer. I think the book could use a re-write in which the repetitive information is eliminated, and the remaining material is cleaned up, possibly following the suggestions of Strunk and White as described in Elements of Style. The 1031 exchange information comprises 22 pages of the 244 page book, and I was particularly disappointed with this section. The author went into useless detail when describing the hypothetical examples; his character, Lisa, needed to paint and carpet her old building before putting in on the market -not relevant! In the next example, Roger's exchange was given such cursory treatment that the author failed to calculate the new basis for the replacement property correctly, inserting an erroneous figure into table 6-2. If you want to put investment real estate into your IRA or 401K, then this book may have merit. However, a quick internet search of "1031 exchange" will yield many more useful explanations than this book provides.

5 out of 5 stars Useful Reference Book with Sound Strategies.......2005-07-04

This book will open your eyes to new ways of securing and increasing your assets tax-free. There are many details and step-by-step examples and different scenarios. If you are thinking of doing a 1031 like-kind exchange - this book will take you through the process and give you concise instructions on how do it and what mistakes to avoid. If you are interested in self-directed IRA's - keep in mind that you can use your retirement plan to invest in real estate. The author walks you through using your 401(K), your IRA, your HSA, and other vehicles to increase your portfolio by buying assets, including real estate.

If you want to own rental property, there is a way to have your self-directed IRA own it in its portfolio. If your IRA doesn't have enough money to purchase the entire property, you can borrow cash outside the IRA to purchase the property. The book shows how to draw up a Buy Letter under those circumstances. If you will be receiving rents from the property, you can hire an outside property manager, rather than having your IRA plan administrator do the work. But there are strict conditions and this book outlines them.

If you invest in real estate at all, or are thinking about it, this book is a definite must-read and could potentially save you thousands of dollars!

                        Book Description

Value-Based Cost Management for Healthcare gives healthcare professionals a framework for linking quality, costs, processes, and outcomes. The framework is based on identifying and measuring value.

This framework is made actionable in a continuous improvement cycle system, which incorporates three proven, innovative financial tools - activity-based costing, value-added analysis, and cost-of-quality analysis.

Readers of this book will be able to:

                        * Show the connection between patient/customer satisfaction and the bottom line.
                        * Reduce cycle time by identifying and eliminating non-value-adding process steps.
                        * Shift costs from failure (non-value-adding) to appraisal, processing, and prevention (value-adding).

Numerous illuminating examples and figures are included.

                            Book Description

This book presents a comprehensive study of the most famous and spectacular instance of inflation in modern industrial society--that in Germany during and following World War I. A broad, probing narrative, this book studies inflation as a strategy of social pacification and economic reconstruction and as a mechanism for escaping domestic and international indebtedness. The Great Disorder is a study of German society under the tension of inflation and hyperinflation, and it explores the ways in which Germany's hyperinflation and stabilization were linked to the Great Depression and the rise of National Socialism. This wide-ranging study sets German inflation within the broader issues of maintaining economic stability, social peace, and democracy and thus contributes to the general history of the twentieth century and has important implications for existing and emerging market economies facing the temptation or reality of inflation.

4 out of 5 stars A great book to lose yourself in.......2000-10-08

                            This is great, hard-core history.

While this book probably won't appeal to the average run-of-the-mill history buff, it will attract anyone who wants to lose himself in a vary narrow, hyper-specialized area of history.

In many ways the economic disaster of Germany between 1914-1924 reworked the foundation of modern finance. For the first time in western history a political system was literally straightjacketed into salvaging an impossible economic situation. This book goes into exhaustive detail contrasting the unenlightened economic policies of the Allies to the increasingly discouraged Germans who desperately wanted to bring order to their lives.

Feldman does a great job helping the reader tune into the magnitude of the hopelessness that the German people felt regarding the impossibility of satisfying unpayable reparations. This is a crisp retelling of a people who did not have, and indeed were prevented from having the economic infrastructure to participate in a functional modern economy.

By the time Feldman is done telling you the story of Germany's incomprehensible inflation, you'll feel an intimacy with this subject. This book is indispensable for understanding the origins of the seething anger, frustration and hostility that the Nazi's were able to so successfully tap into and manipulate.

Finally, I should note that this book is itself something of an ordeal to read; it took me well over two years to read this 4 pound monster. But I have to say I enjoyed every hour I spent with it...

                                  Book Description

China's long-term maritime history has been overlooked by the scholarly community, so much so that there is a misconception that the Chinese were sea- or ocean-phobic. This image has been promoted rather deliberately because a sailing-aversive China would fit in well with the non-capitalist development framework. This study shows that from 2100 B.C. to A.D. 1900, the Chinese were as enthusiastic about and capable of seagoing activities as other peoples. Evidence shows that economic interests provided Chinese sailing-related activities with a lasting impetus, and the private sector played a central role. However, maritime activities in China raise at least two paradoxes: the activities were incompatible with the agrarian dominance in the Chinese premodern economy, and there was a huge gap between China's maritime potential and maritime growth. This situation was symptomatic of both positive and negative effects of technical and economic aspects of premodern China. Technologically, limited maritime growth resulted from climatic and hydrographic conditions favorable to agriculture. Economically, it resulted from low Chinese participation in maritime activities because of safe returns from the agricultural sector. This book provides readers with a long-term analysis of Chinese maritime activities and their economic consequences in industries, infrastructure, trade, migration, and government policies. It shows a new insight into the causes for sterility of capitalist industrialization in premodern China.

As products, pricing and distribution are fast becoming commodities, companies are discovering that strong brand relationships are an added value and a way to sustain growth. Integrated marketing (IM) is the cross-functional process for creating this brand value. It's a blueprint for managing relationship-sensitive factors such as critical brand contact points, two-way interactivity with customers and aftermarket support. IM shows companies how to strategically use new database management systems and communication technologies to cost effectively measure and control what until now was considered the ``intangible'' side of business. With the increase in mergers, acquisitions, global expansion and competition, growing and retaining brand relationships has never been tougher. Authors Tom Duncan and Sandra Moriarty's practical, hands-on business model for integrated marketing addresses these challenges. Through case studies of Saturn, Montblanc and Gillette, Driving Brand Value shows managers what processes need to be in place and how companies need to be organized to use IM. Driving Brand Value shows executives: How to recognize the 7 red flags of Marketing Dis-Integration; The 10 strategic drivers of Integrated Marketing; How to use Mission Marketing to achieve corporate goals; How to manage a brand's total communication package; 20 tough questions to ask when looking for an IM agency.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Blissful Data.......2004-02-27

Margaret Chu's book is a delightful book with the just the right amount of humor and sophistication. She takes a complex subject, data warehousing, and presents it in a non threatening, easy to understand, plain English style, that makes the book a quick read. In addition to being able to finish the book quickly you'll come away with a feeling of satisfaction and you'll know a lot of the dos and don'ts of data warehousing.

I have been saying for years that the company that can harness its collective information across the supply chain can increase market share and profits by maximizing customer service through maximizing effective resource utilization to drive down total costs. This is what Margaret Chu has shown you can do with a well thought out and planned data warehouse initiative. But it won't be a cake walk. It takes discipline to do it right. However, with Margaret's book, which is full of insights, remember this sections, and humorous but poignant nursery rhymes you will learn how to apply the finer points of her book to create a successful data warehouse initiative.

Margaret starts off with a simple and clear explanation of a data warehouse. She then explains how a data warehouse and a data mart are different. She further explains that a data mart is type of data warehouse with a very specific purpose. She emphasizes that the type of data warehouse you choose needs to be aligned with the corporate strategy and that you need to think through the why of what you are trying to accomplish before you can choose the correct type of data warehouse.

The last chapter of "Blissful Data" is dedicated to two case studies to further arm the reader with a positive road map to data warehouse success. The first is a success story and the second is a failure. However, Margaret goes further than just telling stories of success and failure. In each case study she reviews what went well and what didn't. Yes even in successful projects some things could have been done better and even in failed projects there are things that went well and need to be capitalized on.

Well I have now told you about the beginning and the end but I suggest you now go out and purchase this book to fill in the middle, I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Learning from the experience of others.......2004-02-19

In a very enjoyable read, Margaret lays out the major lessons people need to know in order to provide a true environment for business to see, understand, and act upon their data. She outlines the lessons with humorous analogies, relevant stories, and practical experiences.

Margaret also provides a very natural progression of the information so the book is good for the novice as well as the experienced. Extremely useful were the "remember" points sprinkled throughout the chapters and the impactful quotes that encapsulate important ideas and messages.

Margaret Chu brings a unique blend of technical insight and practical organizational acumen to this beguiling field. I've been associated with data as a corporate resource since early testing of IBM's GIS in the 60's decade, early use of Software AG's ADABASE in the 70's, and beneficial application of early PC-based relational databases of the 80's. Those expecting a treatise on the mechanics of data warehousing to gain a marginal advantage might be disappointed. They should put aside their geek-bias; this readable book can give them a quantum leap advantage to build a data warehouse that actually delivers what the sponsors expect. The two chapters on "Politics: ...Who Owns It Anyway? and ...Who's Going to Pay? are the heart of this practical book.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Book for People Who Work.......2004-02-12

If you've ever tackled a project where you set out to track woozles and ended up fleeing from heffalumps, this is just the book to save you from future tramplings. Blissful Data is not merely about data warehouses, though you'll find that subject thoroughly rendered. Margaret Chu analyses all the factors that make or break a project of any kind, with a particular focus on data warehouse implementation. You'll come away from this book with a substantial introduction to modern Project Management principles. As Ms Chu points out, the issues inherent in creating data warehouses are largely human issues, and she shows how best to view and handle those issues, in addition to the technical ones.

Was I beginning to sound pedantic? Fortunately Blissful Data smooths the path through dense underbrush with lots of personal examples and whimsical analogies. For example, we precede the discussion of corporate culture with one of Village People culture--complete with illustration of said singers, in case you'd forgotten what they looked like. And yes, my opening line concerning woozles and heffalumps was inspired by Ms Chu's other references to A. A. Milne's fabled stories. I was repeatedly struck with amusement and even a few guffaws, and was thereby refreshed to undertake the analyses and explanations. There is enough serious medicine in Blissful Data to keep me coming back for repeated doses, but a spoonful of sugar eases the swallowing.

This is definitely not a book reserved for tech geeks or business managers or execs. It speaks to everyone who has ever tried to improve the way they do their job. With a career spanning 20 years of Information Technology projects, I consider myself well versed in all aspects of system implementation. Yet as Zen teacher Sunryu Suzuki noted, "Everything is perfect, but there is a lot of room for improvement." Blissful Data is the sort of book that will provide lasting benefits in improving on my perfection. I highly recommend it to anyone who ever works with people or performs a job.
