Tangled Up In The Past
Bob Ferchat , and Tony Carlson Manufacturer: I.Magin.ation Inc. ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0973045310 |
Book Description
Opportunity missed . . .No corporation in the world was better placed to drive the development of the Internet in its infancy than AT&T and IBM.
Yet these icons of industrial excellence, blinded by success that limited their vision, refused to get in at the birth of the dominant medium of the 21st Century, referring to stick to their traditional paths.
Tangled Up In The Past tells the story of that opportunity missed . . . and the billion-collar consequences still reverberating in today's headlines.
And because only a Luddite would think the flow of opportunities has stopped, the lessons for today's corporate leaders continue to be inescapably essential.
Tangled Up In The Past brings to life a compelling theme:
In a fast-changing world, it is never enough to concentrate only on your core competencies. Rather, leaders need to exercise a constant, rigorous peripheral vision, searching for possibilities beyond today's focus. For the only future we can rely on is the one we make.
For people who are thoughtful about business strategy and hungry to put to use those small blocks of time everyone has - on a commute, in an airplane, just prior to sleep - this is An Hour's Good Read

The Age of Mass Migration: Causes and Economic Impact
Timothy J. Hatton , and Jeffrey G. Williamson Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0195116518 |
Book Description
About 55 million Europeans migrated to the New World between 1850 and 1914, landing in North and South America and in Australia. This mass migration marked a profound shift in the distribution of global population and economic activity. In this book, Timothy J. Hatton and Jeffrey G. Williamson describe the migration and analyze its causes and effects. Their study offers a comprehensive treatment of a vital period in the modern economic development of the Western world. Moreover, it explores questions that we still debate today: Why does a nation's emigration rate typically rise with early industrialization? How do immigrants choose their destinations? Are international labor markets segmented? Do immigrants "rob" jobs from locals? What impact do migrants have on living standards in the host and sending countries? Did mass migration make an important contribution to the catching-up of poor countries on rich? Did it create a globalization backlash? This work takes a new view of mass migration. Although often bold and controversial in method, it is the first to assign an explicitly economic interpretation to this important social phenomenon. The Age of Mass Migration will be useful to all students of migration, and to anyone interested in economic growth and globalization.

Multinationals As Flagship Firms: Regional Business Networks
Alan M. Rugman , and Joseph R. D'Cruz Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 019925818X |
Book Description
The international dimension of business networks has remained relatively unexplored, mainly because international business writers focus upon multinational enterprises and network writers ignore international issues. In this book Professors Alan Rugman and Joseph D'Cruz bridge the literature on networks and multinationals by introducing the new concept of the flagship firm. In each business network strategic leadership is provided by the flagship firm, which is defined as a multinational enterprise. It has other partners: key suppliers; key customers; key competitors; and key partners in the non-business infrastructure. These business networks are usually located in the 'triad' regions of the European Union, North America, and Japan. There are strong cross-border network linkages within these regions, but less globalization than regional economic integration. The theory of the flagship firm/five partners model is applied to the telecommunications, chemicals, automotive, and electronics sectors, amongst others, and the book reports on both empirical studies and field research of the international competitiveness of these sectors. The book will be of interest to academics, students, and professionals in the areas of international business, strategic management, political science, law, and sociology.
