3 out of 5 stars A Pocketful of Practical Tips.......2003-04-03

This book gives practical strategies for starting and maintaining mentor partnerships in organizations. Written for the business community, these techniques can be used in any setting. A small pocket-sized book, just right for lunch or the train ride home, it's a quick read with humorous illustrations and applicable quotes. Most notably is the three stage model for guiding the mentor through the mentoring process. A process that includes exploring the relationship, reaching new understandings and action planning. Each stage is described and the authors give strategies and methods for working within the stages. In addition, each stage has suggested comments and questions the mentor might say when communicating with the mentee. The authors suggest that the mentor use this model for reflection and planning.

The book falls short in many ways. It does not emphasize the important distinctions between mentoring and managing. More coverage should have been given to this topic since managers/supervisors/coaches are more likely the audience for this book. Also, it glazes over the very practical issue of time by estimating that mentors spend 2-3 hours a month mentoring. The authors do not say what this figure is based upon. Lastly, it does not adequately address the importance of the reciprocity in mentoring partnerships. This book is meant for mentor and mentees, but the mentee's role as guider is downplayed.

Coming up with the right thing to say has always been a challenge for me. I like that this little book actually gives a handful of sample questions and comments I can use. Also, the author gives some good tips for both the mentor and the mentee in the process. An added bonus is the issues and questions section in the back of the book, followed by some blank pages for note-taking.

Don't think this book will get you the job.But i guess it might help a little. Its a Idiot written test to see how dumb you are, they don't want smart people lol.You do get 5 weeks vacation unlimited sick leave so if its monday and you partied all weekend you can go sick for aweek or two lol...20 year retirement after 20 years you get half pay for the rest of your life and after lol.But i don't think your chances are good at getting this job.You might take the post office test where ever they are giving it,the post office is a very good job.About 100,000 people take the test and its a lottery system they use.If you pass that does not mean you get on the list, its a lottery.then maybe they will put about 3,000 people on the list, and maybe they will call about 300 people from the list. Not a very good chance of getting the job but the city of new york makes money on the test that they give.

5 out of 5 stars This book has helped me.......2000-07-05

I am working for the new york city sanitation and after reading this book the test was much more easier to do.And I was hired soon after taking the test. And with the 20 year retirement plan and 5 weeks vacation a year, what a great job

4 out of 5 stars Practical Book On Re-Engineering.......2000-02-29

I am currently doing an assignment on business process re-engineering. Many of the texts I have read so far have been thick on the theories and the benefits of re-engineering. As such, it comes across as cheap propagnada.

This book was different. In the first chapter, unlike other texts, it did not simply insists that TQM and other continuous process improvements are of the past and are not good enough for today's business environment. It explains how TQM has its place, if you are already a market leader. However, if you are way below, then TQM will not allow you to reach the apex before you are out of business. Re-engineering is the way.

This immediately pave the way for the rest of the book. The authors are balanced in their views and do not simply advertise the merits of re-engineering. They also cautioned throughout the text on the difficulties and pitfalls of re-engineering. I found their arguments more convincing than most authors.

The examples throughout the book were taken from different industries and prove a source for ideas for any re-engineering effort. The authors came across as extremely experienced in their work.

I would have given it five stars except the last chapter on the human aspect of re-engineering was rather dissapointing. I had expected to learn more from the authors about the very difficult human resource issues in re-engineering. Like most texts, the book mentioned difficulties and dished out textbook solutions without real solutions.

Still, it was one of the best re-engineering texts I have read and I believe it will help me greatly in my assignment.

I also believe that it is extremely useful for any managers or CEOs who want to re-engineer their business. Hammer's classic on re-engineering is not enough. You need to read this book for the practical advice and guiding framework if you are to have any chance for success in re-engineering.

                          Book Description

"In this timely book, Peter Herriot draws together a number of current ideas about career development and brings a fresh approach to understanding the concept of 'careers' in the increasingly uncertain and volatile business environments of the 1990s. The book also offers some solutions to the inevitable tensions which arise between individual career aspirations and the often one-sided use which organizations make of 'their' human resources. . . . It is clear, well-written and contains some imaginative insights into the nature of professional careers in the 1990s. The book is likely to be of use to forward thinking companies and HRM specialists, students on management and business degree schemes, and to academics interested in career development issues, HRM, and organizational behaviour." --International Journal of Human Resource Management "Herriot's nice, relaxed writing style would admirably suit the busy general manager." --International Journal of Career Management "Reading this, individuals will find a wealth of thought-provoking guidance in terms of how to ensure the most effective psychological contract for them." --Management Education and Development "[The book] is persuasively argued with a wealth of illustration and an approach both logical and level-headed which this reviewer found most attractive. . . . Students following courses on human resource management (or personnel management for the unenlightened) will find it immensely valuable. Above all, it should be required reading for all college senior management students as they prepare themselves to face the challenges of incorporation, not to mention directorates within the university sector." --The Vocational Aspect of Education "With its suitably ambiguous title, the career management message of this book is directed at both organisations and individuals. The author provides a new definition of an organizational career based on the agreed expectations of both parties. . . . This view of careers overcomes many of the problems often identified by writers in the field in that it incorporates both the individual's and the organisation's perspectives, and that it is dynamic, enabling more sense to be made of what both parties want in a changing environment. . . . It is a compelling and stimulating framework which provides important practical insights, since the way we think about careers influences how we manage our own and those of others. . . . This book deserves to be widely read. For practicing managers it achieves the rare feat of making current theory and research accessible and relevant. For researchers it provides a welcome coherence in a fragmented field. Above all it is a highly enjoyable and refreshing read." --The Occupational Psychologist Careers have traditionally been viewed either from the organization's or from the individual's point of view. While organizations have seen employees as human resources to be developed and deployed to achieve organizational objectives, individuals have seen their careers as something they own and develop themselves. The Career Management Challenge combines both of these viewpoints in its examination of the individual and strategic organizational dimensions of career management. The author argues that organizations will increasingly need to manage a complex individual-organizational balancing act as an essential ingredient of their human resource strategies. Using the concept of a "psychological contract," Herriot shows how organizations and individuals make contracts with each other based on the expectations each holds of the other. He goes on to identify how key current and future economic and technological trends are raising organizational and individual expectations, and how a satisfactory balance can and must be reached for organizational survival. Innovative and stimulating, The Career Management Challenge is important reading for managers and students of human resource management, occupational psychology, and organizational behavior.

                            Book Description

The United States and the countries of Latin America were all colonized by Europeans, yet in terms of economic development, the U.S. far outstripped Latin America beginning in the nineteenth century. Observers have often tried to account for this disparity, many of them claiming that differences in cultural attitudes toward work explain the U.S.'s greater prosperity. In this innovative study, however, Camilla Townsend challenges the traditional view that North Americans succeeded because of the so-called Protestant work ethic and argues instead that they prospered relative to South Americans because of differences in attitudes towards workers that evolved in the colonial era. Townsend builds her study around workers' lives in two similar port cities in the 1820s and 1830s. Through the eyes of the young Frederick Douglass in Baltimore, Maryland, and an Indian girl named Ana Yagual in Guayaquil, Ecuador, she shows how differing attitudes towards race and class in North and South America affected local ways of doing business. This empirical research clarifies the significant relationship between economic culture and racial identity and its long-term effects.

                              Book Description

This book provides a general framework for the construction of statistically efficient choice designs. It reviews previous strategies researchers have used to generate reasonable choice designs, develops criteria for efficiency when one has prior information about the model parameters, specifies general search algorithms for generating efficient choice designs, and finally, uses this knowledge to develop and test individual-level choice models. The book is of interest to researchers and practitioners in marketing science, economics, and statistics.

                              4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......1999-06-02

Although some parts of the book are not as detailed as I would like, it is well written. The author seems to have a fairly extensive knowledge of the theory and practice of discrete choice. He discusses several of the do's and don'ts in designing choice experiments, as well as a method that allows for individual level utility estimates. However, it would help the reader to have some prior knowledge of discrete choice analysis before reading the book.

                                Book Description

There have arisen, in various settings, unmistakable calls for involvement of psychological factors in IT work, notably in development and deployment of information systems. Managing Psychological Factors in Information Systems Work: An Orientaion to Emotional Intelligence "pulls together" areas of existing involvement, to suggest yet new areas and to present an initial, and coherent vision and framework for, essentially, extending and humanizing the sphere of IT work. It may be indeed noteworthy that, while the Industrial Revolution may have moved the human person into intellectual predominance, the IT Revolution, with its recent calls for addressing and involving the "whole person", may indeed be initiating a re-centering of the human being in his/her essential core, giving rise to new consciousness, new vision and new, empowering experiences. May this book encourage the first few steps along a new and vivifying path!

4 out of 5 stars A book to come back to.......2004-09-29

Emotional intelligence is no longer a new concept but systematic research of its impact on IT work has just started. Eugene Kaluzniacky's book explains why personality types, cognitive and creativity styles, and emotional intelligence do have an impact on IT workers, teams and corporate bottom lines. The author presents the concepts and how they influence specific IT tasks; backed by solid research, he offers insights and solutions to problems any IT worker or manager can relate to. The book is a tremendous asset for the maturing IT profession and for any serious practitioner in the field. I have directly benefitted from the insights this book equipped me with: I was able to validate some of the professional decisions and moves I did (or did not do) in the 20+ years spent in IT; I acquired a new angle to help me orient my development from now on - within and outside the professional arena. The concept of "inner deeper self" is very engaging although not very easy to grasp; probably a little ahead of its time. Despite the density and the academic rigour of the text, I had fun too reading this book; and for the very same reasons this is one book to come back to!
