                      Book Description

`Quality of life' is one of the fastest growing areas of research and policy. The concept has an intuitive appeal as a measure of the well-being of individuals, communities and nations. It is increasingly promoted as an aid for political decisions and public funding. But what does the concept really mean? And how can it be operationalized in teaching and research?

This is the first introductory text to offer a critical overview of the concept of quality of life and the ways in which it is researched. Using an inter-disciplinary approach the book covers every aspect of the concept and its application - from the calculation of Quality-Adjusted Life Years to conversation analysis, from the estimation of the quality of life of nation states to ethnographic studies of the life quality of individual disadvantaged people.

The book fills a huge gap in teaching and research. Written with authority, and the need to produce an accessible critical introduction to the field, it will be of interest to students of sociology, psychology, public health and nursing, health economics, politics and medicine.

After 10 years of working in Quality Assurance , oneday, I was in the situation to explain to a 71 years old, neo-comunist manager, why to implement a Quality System in his company! It was a thing hard to do, but this book gave me best reasons. Congratulations!

                              Book Description

This is the arresting 150-year story of one of the oldest and most illustrious merchant banks and of the men who made it. Founded in 1838 by an American, George Peabody, Morgan Grenfell quickly became the most important American banking house in London, and by the turn of the century held an unrivalled position as part of the most powerful investment bank in the world. The book chronicles its role in financing the overseas purchases of Britain and her allies during the First World War, in taking the lead amongst the private London bankers in reconstructing Europe during the 1920s, and in pioneering the new field of corporate finance. In the 1980s Morgan Grenfell took off with a substantial rise in profits and an extraordinarily powerful Corporate Finance Department: an epilogue summarises recent events to the end of 1988 when it decided to exit from securities in London and to concentrate on developing its areas of traditional strength. Based on a wide range of original sources, this book is unmatched as a banking history: no other book combines the unrestricted access to the bank's archives afforded to the author with a narrative of events up to the 1980s.

                                  Book Description

The seven volumes will comprise the definitive scholarly edition of the works of Michal Kalecki, one of the most distinguished of twentieth-century economists and one of the trio who arrived at the conclusions promulgated by Keynes around the same time as - and in Kalecki's case, arguably earlier than - Keynes himself. Nearly half the material to appear in the seven volumes has never been previously published in English and includes revisions and additions made in the light of recent research, including information about the relationship of Kalecki's ideas to the ideas of contemporary economic theory. This volume deals with the capitalist economy and contains Kalecki's studies on the theory of income distribution in oligopolistic capitalism and on its economic dynamics. Each part of the book consists of essays devoted to a similar topic and individual papers in each part are arranged in chronological order. The editorial comments and annexes at the end of the volume, besides giving valuable information on the background to the main texts, include illuminating exchanges of correspondence between Kalecki and Keynes, Joan Robinson, and others.

The study also covers areas such as primary objectives of corporate advertising, types of media used, spending levels, target audiences and organizational structures.

This report presents the findings of our latest Alliance survey on corporate marketing and advertising. The survey was conducted January 31 - February 3, 2006 and a total of 414 members involved in or knowledgeable about marketing/advertising decisions for their organization participated. ChangeWave Research surveys its proprietary intelligence-gathering network of 7,000 accredited members on a wide range of research topics and converts the findings into valuable business intelligence reports. These credentialed technology professionals and business executives work in over 20 vertical industries -- and spend their everyday lives on the frontline of technological change. Nearly 3 out of every 5 members (56%) have advanced degrees (e.g., Master's or Ph.D.) and 93% have at least a four-year bachelor's degree.

From the supplier: The increasingly competitive global business environment has tremendously affected the capability of companies to donate to charities. Many companies have closed due to their inability to cope with the changing conditions of today's business environment. However, global competition is expected to spur corporate productivity and lead companies to expand their philanthropic interests along global lines. Charities seeking grants from corporations can expect more rigorous guidelines for corporate endowments in the light of these developments.

                                                        Book Description

Within American service sector organizations there exists a gap between understanding customer service quality improvement (QI) theories and applying them. Improving Service Quality in the Global Economy: Achieving High Performance in Public and Private Sectors, Second Edition fills that gap by presenting theory, application models, and cases of successful customer service QI efforts in both the public and private sectors. The book emphasizes the selection and development of strategies for quality improvement in regulated public non-market-driven services such as education, government, and healthcare. This revised edition promotes managerial thinking that integrates QI and Knowledge Management (KM) concepts with leadership principles that enable effective responses to the changing demands of the global economy. The text provides step-by-step guidelines, recommendations, and action plans for implementing quality improvements in service sector industries, which now generate two-thirds of America's GDP. Throughout this volume, cases of successful QI efforts in service industries complement major points in each chapter, offering profiles of global service quality leaders that serve as examples to organizations in the public sector. Current and future managers will gain insight into how the global service quality revolution effects their daily work environments, inspiring improvement in products, services, and support that American companies provide to markets worldwide.

                                                              Book Description

Agricultural pollution (with nitrates and pesticides) is one of the biggest threats to drinking water resources. At many places regional and local water authorities, together with the water supply industry, are involved in preventive action aimed at farming practices. Three national case studies (Germany, The Netherlands, and the United Kingdom) analyse these efforts within the context of problematical national agricultural policy and the need to implement EU directives on water quality. Additional case studies cover the role of the European Union, while the same problem in a different setting is analysed for the United States. The central question of how national and European governments can reinforce the control capacity of the actors at the regional and local level, is treated from the theoretical perspective of the policy network approach.

There are many standards, methods and perhaps most confusing, but most importantly of all acronyms in use in the field of quality management, and especially so in the field of technology-based products. From the seemingly simple concepts of ISO 9000 (and the military MIL standards from which that grew) to statistical and analytical methods like Statistical Process Control (SPC) the range of complexity and compliance is staggering. What the average quality engineer or manager needs is a simple guide to what these are, how they relate to one another and most critically how to take advantage of and implement the benefits of each. This book provides that guidance.

Written by a quality consultant with over 20 years experience in precisely these fields, including work with the US Defense Department, Boeing, Lockheed-Martin, Raytheon, and many other leading companies, this book provides an easily digestible toolbox of solutions to quality and management problems for every engineer, manager and even student looking for those answers for the medium to high-technology sector manufacturing company. This is a highly practical book which includes all the major topics in quality as well as case studies from relevant real-world situations yet without the need to wade through reams of reference materials and international standards verbiage. If you need to get to the bottom of problems like these, you need this book.

The contributors to this volume examine issues raised by the intersection of new communications technologies and public policy in this post-boom, post-bust era. Originally presented at the 30th Research Conference on Communication, Information, and Internet Policy (TPRC 2002)--traditionally a showcase for the best academic research on this topic--their work combines hard data and deep analysis to explore the dynamic interplay between technological development and society.

The chapters in the first section consider the ways society conceptualizes new information technologies and their implications for law and policy, examining the common metaphor of "cyberspace as place," alternative definitions of the Internet, the concept of a namespace, and measures of diffusion. The chapters in the second section discuss how technological change may force the rethinking of legal rights; topics considered include spectrum rights, intellectual property, copyright and "paracopyright," and the abridgement of constitutional rights by commercial rights in ISP rules. Chapters in the third and final section examine the constant adjustment and reinterpretation of regulations in response to technological change, considering, among other subjects, liability regimes for common carriers and the 1996 detariffing rule, privacy and enhanced 911, and the residual effect of state ownership on privatized telecommunication carriers. The policy implications of Rethinking Rights and Regulations are clear: major institutional changes may be the necessary response to major advances in telecommunications technology.
