Book Description

Intranets have changed the way organizations around the world communicate. Many business people are intimidated by this technological revolution-but they need not be! The Human Side of Intranets guides you through the daunting task of transforming communication within your business. This book is for every non-technical person charged with the task of creating or contributing to a company intranet system. It goes through the process step-by-step, from initial concept to launch and beyond. The Human Side of Intranets avoids information overload, addressing three critical dimensions of creating an effective and valuable intranet-content, style, and politics. It demonstrates how intranets are not about technology, but about people and the way they communicate. Real-world examples and proven tactics for problem-solving are given to show you the way. This book makes taking your company into the 21st century a manageable feat!

2 out of 5 stars Not Very Useful.......2004-10-26

You would think that with five authors there would be something useful in this book. Unfortunately, this book is all about the politics of Intranets and not about actually building one. There is one page with an outline of possible Intranet topics, but other than that there is no help on Intranet content.

3 out of 5 stars Not very useful.......2003-07-12

It is way to basic, if you've been running an intranet in a largish size company then you don't need this book. If you just got thrown to the wolves though then this may (or may not help). I can't honestly recommend this book.

2 out of 5 stars A good effort but outdated........2002-12-11

If this was still 1998, this would be an excellent read but unfortunately, as with most material in this category (Web Usability), it ages too quickly.

5 out of 5 stars Good advice and very realistic........1998-09-22

This book has definately prepared me for the challenges that are ahead of me. Creating an intranet is the easy part of the process. The book discusses the politics that are involved and what obstacles you may need to overcome. Regardless of it not being a "technical" book, it gave me a more clear understanding of exactly how the whole thing works, and political steps I might need to take to prepare myself and my company. I would recommend this book to anyone who may be involved in the process - beginning or advanced.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect! Recommended to anyone who looks beyond technology!.......1998-02-17

Already from the start I enjoyed this book. A book which shows that intranets are --indeed-- about people and not technology. Although my background is quite technical (UNIX admin...) I recognize that it is not technology in the first place which needs attention. Good structured, nice to read. The first 4 chapters were (for me) most valuable. The rest of the book is a very handy guide for implementing and learning the processes involved. So a big relief and I recommend this book to everybody who is able to look *beyond* the technology...

Book Description

Meeting the Needs of Students of All Abilities addresses the key leadership questions we need to be asking today! While legislative issues address standards, assessments, and graduation requirements for all, this book brings us into the heart of the dialogue. It redefines the purpose of assessment and provides learning models for initiating a rethinking of the classroom and the support structures."
Debra Jackson, Superintendent of Schools
North Salem Central School District, New York

"An important book for all teachers committed to teaching all children. Most books on inclusion help administrators, teachers, parents, and students understand the letter of the law and the demands the legal system makes on institutions. Meeting the Needs of Students of ALL Abilities helps us to recognize the spirit of the law, and explains how to create educational environments for students that are academically appropriate, culturally sensitive, and compassionately caring. It offers a well-developed philosophy of inclusive schooling accompanied by specific practical strategies for implementation. "
Gloria Ladson-Billings, Department of Curriculum and Instruction
University of Wisconsin, Madison

Learn how to guarantee high student achievement—w without adding separate and alternative programs in your school!

This step-by-step handbook offers practical strategies for administrators, teachers, policymakers and parents who want to shift from providing costly special learning programs for a few students, to providing excellent educational services for all students – whether those student needs are a result of a physical or learning ability or race or ethnicity.

Capper, Frattura, and Keyes move beyond the inclusion debates, offering practical strategies for:

Overheads, handouts, and reproducible forms are provided to assist in putting these ideas into practice in staff development sessions, faculty meetings, parent organizations or university classrooms. Chapter-ending self-assessment tools help identify next steps.

A valuable resource for educators to illustrate how teaching that works for ALL students can be supported at the school and district levels.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Makes diversity the responsibility of the whole school.......2000-10-26

This book does an excellent job of framing diversity as a concern and responsibility of the entire school community. This book takes the reader through a process of gathering important statistics that will illustrate the need for change in the school community. Capper et. al. handle the issues of minority students / staff, students with disabilities, students with diverse learning needs, students of lower-socioeconomic status, and issues of sexual orientation in the school community.

The book has a practical approach that is more about giving classroom teachers the skills they need to help to help ALL students before there is a need to label them and place them in special programs.

Their concept of "leading beyond inclusion" is cheaper and more effective for meeting the needs of students.

5 out of 5 stars Great Six Sigma Roadmap.......2006-06-02

To non-believers, Six Sigma often seems to be a valhalla, inhabited by a mythic warrior caste (Black Belts) who communicate in a language few can devine.

Linsenmann and Harry take the mystery out of a Six Sigma deployment. They give real life examples with real life people to show how Six Sigma transformed the DuPont company.

This book does not dwell on p values or r squared correlation factors. And that is a good thing, since the specific tools of Six Sigma have been addressed in many other forums. Instead, the book addresses the more difficult question of how do you change the culture of a large organization to embrace Six Sigma. It addresses the organizational changes necessary for success and how DuPont in particular made those changes.

5 out of 5 stars User Friendly Six Sigma book.......2006-04-12

Great book! Very easy and interesting read. Explains things in a step-by-step manner with great examples.

        Book Description

Early modern India under the Mughals evolved a powerful uniform currency and monetary order. Like the state that created it, the Mughal monetary system was pervasive, flexible and long-lived. One indication of this is the sheer number and wide distribution of coins in circulation or retained in private and public coffers; as remarkable was the fact that this enormous mint output occurred, over two centuries, in a region lacking in any significant output of silver and gold, and only limited copper. This volume of seven essays by distinguished economic historians, constitutes the first coherent and systematic study of the Mughal monetary system, and the process of imperial monetary integration.

        Your one-instructional-design-fits-all solution!

Most training companies develop their training programs in many different technological delivery media, including computer-based, web-based, and distance learning technologies. This unique book demonstrates that the same instructional design process can be used for all media. Using just one process reduces cycle time for course development-and also reduces costs.

Multimedia-Based Instructional Design will provide you with:

      • A process that applies across-the-board to technology-based training of all kinds
      • A hands-on guide to a method of design that is accessible to professionals at all levels of technical expertise
      • A CD-ROM that includes job aids, tools, and worksheets that you can customize for your own use

No more going back to the drawing board every time a new medium is introduced. Once you have this design process in place, you'll have the freedom to choose the delivery method that works best for you!

5 out of 5 stars Exactly What We Needed for a Large, Global Corporation.......2006-03-11

As a large, global corporation, we have over 15 learning development factories scattered around the world, including India and China. Lee and Owens comprehensive textbook provided just the right amount of information we needed to bring our large, diverse learning development population to a common level of understanding. If one could have only one instructional design textbook, I highly recommend this one. The organization is suberb and the forms contained on the CD are perfect for corporate use. Great book! Every ID should have this book on his or her bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars An indispensable roadmap.......2004-07-04

Multimedia-Based Instructional Design is a roadmap, a AAA TripTik?, to guide you on the complex journey from assessing the need for media-based instruction to the final evaluation and analysis of your results.

This book provides the plan and the tools to monitor the plan. It tells you what you need to do and strategies you may want to try. But it does not teach you step by step how to perform the work needed along the way. Multimedia development requires a multi-talented team, spanning a variety of disciplines-way beyond the scope of this book. You, as the project manager, are responsible for putting the plan into action, obtaining the necessary talent, supervising the production, and evaluating the results.

The chapters are short, simply written, and easily digested. The layout is easy to read, with large text and generous line spacing. The accompanying CD-ROM contains Microsoft Word versions of all the forms, checklists, and instructions mentioned in the text-plus Web-based tools to help you formulate objectives and another to help you choose the type of media appropriate for your project.

If you or your training department is planning your first foray beyond the instructor-led live classroom, Multimedia-Based Instructional Design will help you prepare a cogent plan, point out the potential pitfalls, and provide insight based on over 40 years of the authors' combined experience.

        5 out of 5 stars Terrific guide.......2004-05-14

This is an easy to read guide that is extremely helpful. I disagree that this was written by acedemics with no practical experience- there is loads of practical up to date information. I would strongly reccomend the book to anyone needing a strong grasp on the subject and practical examples.

        1 out of 5 stars Doesn't seem contemporary.......2002-12-17

Overly generous interline spacing has made a large book out of what is a effectively a small book. Much of the material in the book struck me as on the edge of redundant and out of touch with emerging developments. Many of the references are very dated (seventies and eighties material) and some are simply obscure. The book just isn't convincingly up to date.

The emphasis on form filling will appeal to all those types who like to run software projects by form filling. There is no creative thrust to this book and the complimentary technology angles are weak. The CD contained nothing that I hadn't been aware of in other modes or hadn't created with MS Office components. It is largely an irrelevancy.

For corporate types who want to roll out loads of flannel about elearning project management, this book may be a gem. For developers however, I would recommend Allessi and Trollip as a much superior text. Personally speaking, this book was not a good value purchase by me.

2 out of 5 stars Long on Theory, Short on How-To.......2002-07-27

This book appears to have been written by academics. It contains a great planning strategies but very little in the way of practical information about how to actually design multimedia instructional materials. The accompanying CD is weak, mostly text and a bunch of supplemental forms and planing document templates. It isn't worth the money if your looking for a "nuts and bolts" guide to design.

I would say that this book is made for every single Business Manager even the ondes who are not at all interested on this area. A Basis and basic Book for driving information.

5 out of 5 stars Provides strong, direct, and user-friendly help.......2003-12-08

This book is derived from the workbook that Kirk Tyson developed for (and from) his global workshops over many years. This second edition is a little longer than the first, which I reviewed for the Competitive Intelligence Review, vol. 9(4), October-December 1998. It is still a document that provides strong, direct, and user-friendly help, particularly for the organization starting up, or considering starting up, its own CI unit.

As with the first edition, the book is carefully done, with an easy style, walking the reader through the entire process of CI. Given the strengths of the first book, Kirk did not have to "reinvent the wheel." He took a solid work, made a few changes to update it, added some additional charts, and replaced the entire 15 page "published sources" appendix.

What I think is most helpful is that it reflects Kirk's clear desire to give his readers something which they can use - and use right away.

The book includes direct, easily understood lessons throughout, such as "No published information should be accepted at face value....[P]ublished information should not be used for intelligence purpose until it has been confirmed with non-published sources." (p. 8-1). This warning is not an over-simplification. As Kirk says, it (and all of the other important lessons throughout) reflects his experience with hundreds of assignments.

Kirk provides in the text, and also in PowerPoint on the two accompanying disks, a set of overheads to help a new CI unit improve CI awareness within the company. These were provided on disk with the First Edition and are, as far as I know, still a unique feature. While the overheads should be adapted for each individual situation, the set provides a quick start for the individual who has to make a presentation - tomorrow - on the company's need for CI. And not only are the overheads direct and useful, there are many other helpful items, including many forms, also provided on the disks. That touch makes the adaptation of these forms smooth and relatively seamless.

Overall, the book's strength is that it reflects both Kirk's broad experience in CI as well as his personal vision of its place in the development and implementation of corporate strategy, about which he has earlier written so well.

For those starting a CI unit from scratch, or just thinking about it, I highly recommend the second edition of this thorough and lucid work.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for those who manage the CI function.......1999-06-08

There is a 2nd edition available now. Tyson's COMPLETE GUIDE is my first choice for a text that supports the instructional objectives of the capstone (graduate) CI course at Drexel University. The needs analysis portion of the text differentiates between specific CI needs at the strategic, tactical and operational levels of an organization. Through efficient discussion and extensive forms and examples, Tyson provides guidance in acquiring and distributing CI in a form that meets the learning styles and information needs of the users.

This handbook will surely frustrate those who are looking for a tutorial in the "basic" analytical skills of CI, but CI is an applied professional discipline that is grounded in the fundamental and technical knowledge of many other disciplines. Since Drexel's CI students are working professionals who often have advanced degrees in business and related scientific and technical discipline, what they need--and this book quite efficiently provides--is a managerial overview of the CI process.

I chose this text after extensive review of numerous trade and academic publications. I have not been sorry--and a number of my students have thanked me for using it.

            Book Description

This book will cover the design and construction of Robot-Sumo robots using MINDSTORMS. Robot building is gaining popularity throughout the mainstream population (Junkyard Wars, Battlebots, etc), but no books have been published with this particular focus.

5 out of 5 stars Packed with valuable tips, tricks, and techniques.......2005-03-05

Competitive Mindstorms: A Complete Guide To Robotic Sumo Using Lego Mindstorms is a hobby guide to using the Lego Mindstorms Robotic Invention System to design, build, program, and unleash autonomous "sumo-bot" creations for use in a robotic sumo arena. Written by dedicated Lego Mindstorms enthusiast David Perdue, Competitive Mindstorms introduces the reader to the sumo-bot, provides seven projects designed to give hands-on experience in three different approaches to robotic sumo (small-and-fast class, medium class, and big-sumo strategies), presents extensive discussions of Lego pieces and building methodology, programming techniques, and much more. Black-and-white photographs illustrate the building instructions in this go-to guide especially friendly to beginners but packed with valuable tips, tricks, and techniques for the seasoned Lego Mindstorms hobbyist as well.

4 out of 5 stars tinker with hardware and software.......2005-01-30

The Lego company has a Mindstorms product line that lets you build Lego models with simple programmable electronics. Easy but fascinating robots. Perdue offers you third party support, in the form of advice that is independent of the company. This book is an amalgam of neat assembly instructions and diagrams of robots to build, with accompanying source code to control them.

The Lego library is easy enough to understand. You code in C, and link to that library. So the outlook is procedural, not object oriented. But for the code examples shown, and for any code that you are likely to write, their sizes are small enough that a procedural approach is perfectly adequate. And with less overhead than an object oriented outlook.

A nice aspect is that you can tinker with both the hardware and software, in tight feedback design loops of changing something and testing it. In other projects, often it might be purely software. Which may not appeal to you, if you're the sort who is attracted to robotics.

4 out of 5 stars Step-by-step robot designs and programming.......2004-11-07

The heart of this book is the step-by-step instructions to construct seven different Lego robot chassis. This is just like any Lego instructions you will find, but it's not in color, and there is English text to add more material about the reasons behind the design.

In addition there is Mindstorms control code to accompany each chassis design. The programming language is Not Quite C (NQC). Installation instructions for NQC are included as this is a step you will have to take in addition to the standard Mindstorms installation.

The bots range from just a small construction around the RCX control block to designs that are 'gargantuan'. They are as sturdy and well designed as those that you find in the original Mindstorms kit.

I was disappointed that there was not more emphasis placed on describing the program logic. I would have appreciated flow charts as most of the control logic is simple state machines.

Overall I think this would be a fine book for anyone serious about Mindstorms sumo.
