                      The second edition of Exploring Strategic focuses on the implementation of organizational change and the management of organizational transitions. It seeks to move beyond the formulation of strategy by taking the planning stage through to implementation. The first half of the book introduces a framework, the change kaleidoscope, which can be used to develop the most appropriate implementation approach for a particular organizational context. The second half of the text focuses on managing the transition.

                      Representing a departure from the notion that change management can be a formulaic and linear process, Exploring Strategic Change approaches the topic with originality by focusing on the fundamental importance of context-specific analysis. The text takes the reader through the change process from the examination of context and the diagnosis of needs through the stages of transition and transference to a tangible reality. Practical examples and illustrations apply the concepts to actual organizational change issues.

                      The reader is encouraged to develop their "change judgment"- the ability to understand what is critical about a certain change context and, therefore, what is and is not possible as part of an implementation approach. Ideally suited for upper level undergraduate and postgraduate students on HRM and Strategy-based modules covering the management of change.                         This study examines the construct of strategic conversation in a scenario planning context. After defining key terms and a conceptual framework for the strategic conversation, this study presents data gathered from individual participants in a scenario planning project. Data concerning perceptions of strategic conversation skills were collected pre-and post-scenario planning project, and then compared with a standard t-test. Conclusions are drawn and limitations are presented and discussed in depth. Recommendations for improving this research in future studies are also identified.

                            During World War II, hundreds of thousands of prisoners were worked to death by the Nazis under a brutal system of slave labor in the concentration camps. By 1942, this vast network of slavery extended across all of German-occupied Europe, but the whole operation was run by a surprisingly small staff of bureaucrats--no more than 200 engineers and managers who worked in the Business Administration Main Office of the SS. Their projects included designing and constructing the concentration camps and gas chambers, building secret underground weapons factories, and brokering slave laborers to private companies such as Volkswagen and IG Farben.

                            The Business of Genocide powerfully contradicts the assumption that the SS forced slavery upon the German economy, demonstrating that instead industrialists actively sought out the Business Administration Main Office as a valued partner in the war economy. Moreover, while the bureaucrats who oversaw Holocaust operations have often been seen as technocrats or simple "cogs in the machinery," the book reveals their ideological dedication, even fanatical devotion, to slavery and genocide in the name of National Socialism.

                            Es sumamente dificil dejar el libro por un momento, los autores nos muestran la realidad de porque los paises en desarrollo en Latinoamerica no han progresado. Y sobre el conflicto permanente entre el Gobierno y la empresa privada. Quien debe liderar el gobierno o la empresa privada?
                            Un acercamiento a las causas de porque no hemos progresado y porque se necesita una estrategia a nivel de País para ser competitivo.
                            Modelo y casos ilustrados muestran ejemplos de cluster en Colombia, Peru y Bolivia; pero son aplicables a todos los países.
                            Hasta ahora hemos arado en el mar, pero este libro no es la solucion de nuestro problemas (Soy Latinoamericano) pero nos da un marco conceptual y modelo para aproximar los problemas y tener exito en el futuro. Tuve la fortuna de que Stace Lindsay fuera mi profesor en mi programa de MBA en una clase sobre competencia, estrategia en los paises en crecimiento, la verdad, ha abierto mi mente acerca de nuestra realidad.

                              I found this book by accident. It would not have been on my list at all. However, it looked interesting, so I bought it. I am glad that I did. It is written with a light, and airy sense. It also tell you all about those billion dollar brand names that you see all the time. It also tells you a little history about them, and what kind of markets they have won. It is a book for everyone, not just business majors. I was so interested in all of the info on the brands that I knew so well, that I read the book in three days. That is very fast for me. I think everyone will enjoy this writing, and I highly recommend it for all those who might be interested in learning more about those brands they see every day.                                     I absolutely LOVE this book. The author, Elizabeth Chesla, offers effective strategies that can boost one's writing prowess. The way that she constructs the book is so thorough. She starts from the big picture, like basic organization, and then works her way down to the smaller pictures, like constructing a coherent thesis statement. Chesla also ventures into many other avenues of essay writing, such as style and freshness of thought. However, the thing that I like most about this book is its workbook's structure. Because this is a workbook, I feel more interactive with the author. I absolutely love this book, and I think that anyone who's looking to improve their essay writing ability should get it.

                                              A chronological account of industrial policy This book surveys governmental industrial policy in Britain from 1900 to the early 1990s, exploring the perennial concern of governments to improve the efficiency and the competitiveness of British industry. Organized chronologically, it focuses on the formation of policy-making, and policy implementation, according to the ideas and beliefs that have dominated during the century. Thus industrial policy is traced through time of war and recession, through the building of the welfare state and times of growth, and through stagflation, economic liberalism, and deindustrialization. The constant theme of the book is the attempt by all governments to achieve the objectives of high growth, low unemployment, and international competitiveness. An examination of the effects of government ideologies Dr Tomlinson reveals both the microeconomic context of industrial policy, and microeconomic effects of these policies. The emphasis is on the formation of policy according to the ideology of the political party in power. Tomlinson also deals with the capacity of each government to carry out its policy, and the ways in which this capacity may be limited by economic constraints, or by the institutions through which industrial policy is implemented. Detailed case studies The focus of the book is on British industry, although in parts Tomlinson uses a comparative perspective to set British policy in the world context, most notably during the chapter on the 1980s. The book ends with two case studies, the industries of cotton and cars, to illuminate the policy explored in the previous chapters. Tomlinson concludes that the British government has continuously found an acceptable industrial policy problematic.

                                                Do you remember those magic colorful books with fairytales from your childhood? You have a decent chance to look inside one of them again. No, there is no Snow White in it, and there are no seven dwarfs (not even one). But the style of the book, its cosy, beautiful, (mostly) large-scale pictures recalls all the warmest feelings from your past. This book is not written, it is just compiled. There is only the foreword in it (not a bad one). So, you won't find many new facts here, but this book can charm you without any word. It is created to take you to those better days when the life was easier and the future was brighter, and that's a wonderful feeling!

                                                For years car ads must have been the ultimate goal for any slick photorealist style artist though I bet there was actually only a small number who could achieve the high standards required by Detroit. The five hundred ad paintings in this book are the pick of the crop. They run from 1923 thru 1965, from the mid-sixties photos were the dominant graphic in car ads.

                                                As these ads were doing their best to put a positive spin on owning a particular make, paintings were the ideal medium to create desire and so much easier to exaggerate reality. A whole society of wee folk was created to spend their lives zooming about town or country, permanently smiling and always waving to somebody along the highway. According to these paintings, most cars would easily accommodate four people in the front. The 1948 Hudson ad (page eighty-five) shows a wee person enjoying `...a heaping portion of roominess and comfort...' sitting on a back seat that looks like it could easily hold six. By the mid-sixties photography had replaced illustrations but the exaggeration continued, have a look at `Boulevard Photographic' by Jim Williams, the story of Detroit's leading car photo studio.

                                                I found it very interesting that these cars, very precisely painted, were usually placed in a setting that did not require the same amount of accuracy. The more popular makes were shown in everyday situations, pages ninety-four and ninety-five show three super street scenes with everybody looking at the latest model, naturally. Nearly all these ad paintings are anonymous but there are some by well-known artists, Austin Briggs painted the 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air and 1958 Chevrolet Impala, Stan Galli did the 1955 Bel Air and Bernie Fuchs the 1960 Cadillac Coupe De Ville. The ultimate in car art was the work of Art Fitzpatrick (car) and Van Kaufman (background) who created dozens of masterpieces for Pontiac in the fifties and sixties, the book has twenty-two of their ads.                                                 Though this is a lovely book of car ads, I was disappointed by the presentation. Collectors Press editorial style is to make each page of their books as busy as possible. All of the spreads in this one have colored backgrounds and (really annoying) many of the ads are angled and overlap each other, several of them are cropped badly too, so that some of the text is unreadable. It is as if the publishers didn't think the material was very interesting and the pages needed some strong graphic presentation to compensate. It does take the edge of a fine book in my view.

Over a spectrum of five decades ranging from the "Roaring Twenties through the Go-Go Sixties, Retro Ride showcases original print advertizing that provided the consumer public with information and myth with that shaped their perspectives, attitudes and relationships to the automobile. A unique contribution to American popular culture histories, Retro Ride reflects an undeniable nostalgia for those of us who can vividly remember when such cars and such ads offered up automotive visions of affordable paradise and personal fulfillment.

                                                Previous reviews have addressed the attractions this lovely volume has for car lovers. However, I found it a marvelous mirror of American society through the first 2/3rds of the 20th century. Family values, exploration and the desire for the good life characterized pre-depression advertising. Luxury and escapism dominated pre-WW II graphics. Technology and patriotism surfaced during the war. Family themes and safety emerged during the birth of the baby boomers as full station wagons and back seats filled with kids were portrayed. Increasing disposable income in the 50's prompted a return to the freedom of the road, travel and a new emphasis on performance. By the early sixties, couples in romantic situations had replaced families as cars were portrayed as an accessory to a "sexy" lifestyle. The question that remained was whether advertisers established these trends or took their cues from the mood of the country.

                                                This is a great coffee table book. Packed with great images that is kind of nice to see compared to vans that now come standard with entertainment centers.

                                                Retro Ride is a fun marketing review. I enjoyed how much some of the ads have not changed over the years. A lot of reference to "getting away" and having more space and later, more power.

                                                I keep the book out for the enjoyment of my family and friends on a daily basis. I can recommend this book if you're looking for a frivolous ride through our early marketing years of the automobile.
