Book Description

Mistrust, argues John O. Whitney, forments meddling corporate bureaucracies that police even the most trivial transactions--squelching innovation and dragging down revenues with crippling administrative overhead. It discourages sales from talking to marketing, marketing to manufacturing, or manufacturing to design. (Or any of them talking to customers of suppliers.) And it provokes harassed managers to endlessly massage their budget and forecast numbers. . .and their superiors to doubt the results they submit.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great insight and sharp wit.......1998-07-10

I loved this book. Whitney uses great examples and a sharp tongue to expose many of the myths of our current management thinking. It is laugh-out-loud funny at points, and his writing style flows very well. There is some very good theory in here.

Book Description

“Within our globalized world, how to make men and women with very different cultures, customs, and time zones work together efficiently? This is a piercing question for the corporate world that Olivier Chavaren has perfectly identified. Admittedly, it is almost unrealistic and paradoxical to want to strengthen the bonds of mutual trust between people who globalization sends further away every day, one from another. But the solutions evoked here turn out to be very appealing. Even beyond tools, the professional and personal relationship may first of all depend upon the humanity of the individuals themselves.”—Etienne Leenhardt, Correspondent for FRANCE 2 (French TV) in Washington, DC

"A meaningful theoretical framework coupled with a solid survey within global teams. An excellent book that every international manager should read."—Bruce McWhirter, Senior VP, Tax & Treasury, EQUANT (telecom networks, operating in 220 countries)

"This book addresses one of the most pressing concerns for any transnational organization: how to work efficiently across the boundaries of time, space, and culture. The author delivers an important contribution to both theory and practice. To this end, a model is offered for teams to succeed in such environment."

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AND PUBLICPOLICY report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A007424. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The purpose of this MBA Project was to provide an analysis of trust in the Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAAV) Program. The primary objectives of this project were to identify significant relationships between trust of military and civilian personnel and to identify relationship between geographic workplace setting and trust of military and civilian personnel. Our analysis revealed significant differences between trust of military and civilian team members before collocation. We also found that there is a significant difference between trust of military team members before and after collocation of working teams. We propose further study focusing on the relationship between trust of military personnel, formalism and geographic workplace settings.

From the author: Trust is a critical factor fostering commitment among supply chain partners. The presence of trust improves measurably the chance of successful supply chain performance. A lack of trust among supply chain partners often results in inefficient and ineffective performance as the transaction costs (verification, inspections and certifications of their trading partners) mount. Although the literature often mentions a relationship between trust and commitment, there is a lack of empirical testing of such relationship in the supply context. This study attempts to fill the gap between the theoretical argument and empirical testing. Results using a comprehensive survey of supply chain practitioners indicate that a firm's trust in its supply chain partner is highly associated with both sides' specific asset investments (positively) and behavioral uncertainty (negatively). It is also found that information sharing reduces the level of behavioral uncertainty, which, in turn, improves the level of trust. A partner's reputation in the market has a strong positive impact on the trust-building process, whereas a partner's perceived conflict creates a strong negative impact on trust. Finally, the level of commitment is strongly related to the level of trust. Policy implications are discussed.

                              Book Description

By looking at a wide range of industrialized economies, including England, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Argentina, the United States, and "late developers" such as Russia, this book aims to show how important the state was in the development of financial systems. It examines the various factors that contributed to the emergence of diverse financial systems, and through comparative historical analysis draws together general themes, such as the inter-country differences in the mix of public and private finance, to produce a book that makes an unique contribution to financial and economic history.

I have looked through this book, and have read the first part. The coaching exercises I have encountered so far are very thought provoking. You have to work out a lot of things as you go in this book. It is only a quick read if you skip all the work. It is almost like actually working with a coach because of how interactive it is. I am going gradually as I figure out my plan. I can't do some of the exercises yet because I don't know all the answers at this point. It really helps you develop an overall business plan, and the results of that are that you know exactly why you are making all the choices you make in establishing your practice.

I recommend this book for new and experienced Coaches.

I have not completed the book yet, but from the 1/3 of it I"ve read, it is the kind of beginners book I was looking for. It is very basic. There have been some editing weaknesses I have noticed but that is more a function of the publisher than the author.

I love this book. It is written by a coach for someone who wants to create their own coaching business or improve their business plan for their existing coaching business. I just finished this book a few minutes ago, and I still can't believe what a wonderful book it is. I'm a SCORE counselor, one type of business coach, and I regularly counsel wanta-be entrepreneurs and small business owners on how to prepare business plans or modify existing plans. If a client came to me and wanted to start a coaching practice, then I would be giving the client the ISBN for this book right up front.

The author has her own successful coaching business. And this book includes her story about building her coaching business. She tells us what didn't work for her and what has worked for her. She gives us all kinds of insight into what to think about and do when starting your own coaching business.

Interestingly, she has a program she sells through her coaching business that goes something like this:

                              1. Describe what you want
                              2. Explore your options
                              3. Create your game plan
                              4. Implement your plan
                              5. Reach your goal

This program she sells is generic. It is the same program I use when I counsel people at SCORE as to how to start a business. I have my clients: (1) Describe the business they want to create, (2) Do market research, (3) Prepare their 25-35 page business plan, (4) Implement their plan, and (5) Meet their revenue targets timely.

This book tells the reader to do the above five things to start and run a coaching business. And then there is the wonderful list of resources at the end of the book on marketing, Web sites, newsletters, articles, ebooks, public speaking, networking, etc.

About the only thing missing seemed to be a discussion on Choice of Legal Entity. Should the coach form a Limited Liability Company (LLC) or a C Corporation?

If you run a coaching business or want to start one, then I highly recommend this book to you to help you in your work. I also think you will benefit greatly by reading the two following books as supplements to this book: Plug Your Book! (ISBN: 0977240614), by Steve Weber, and Aiming at Amazon (ISBN: 093849743X), by Aaron Shepard. 5 stars!

                              *****
This book, though short, is succinct and very useful, very rich in content---a great guide for coaches who are wanting to begin marketing their practices. Marketing information is hard to organize, because as a coach, you really just want to know what you need to know to make your practice successful, and not a lot more than that. If you agree with me, this is the book for you.

There are lots of resources for coaches who want to delve deeper into any particular type of marketing---for example, running teleclasses---but enough basic information so that you can get started, along with time estimates, cost estimates, and estimates as to how long you would have to do any particular activity before it becomes profitable.

I really appreciated the Resource section in the back of the book covering Internet sites for sources from everything from headsets for the telephone, to e-book resources, to credit card merchants and alternatives like PayPal, etc. The Resource section is for the most part specific just to coaching, and the more general resources are useful, too, unlike some appendices.

There are assignments throughout the book for those people who enjoy exercises to assist you in actually DOING the things you need to do to market your practice. The assignments seemed good, but am using the book as a sourcebook to help me to brainstorm, so I just read over them for ideas. I cannot imagine anyone going through and doing these exercises, though, and by the end of the book NOT having a thriving practice.

This is definitely the best book I have ever read on marketing for coaches! I can't imagine how it could have been written any better or how it could have been any more helpful unless the author did the marketing FOR me :)

                                Book Description

In the period between 1865 to 1920, as America shifted from a rural-farming economy to urban-manufacturing, a major transformation also occurred in the behavior of the country's consumers. This change is perhaps best illustrated in the advertisements that appeared in popular magazines. They began by simply informing consumers of the cost and availability of a product, but, by 1920, they were projecting an image that defined the American dream in terms of a consumption ethic. In this historical analysis of advertisements, James Norris explores this transformation of society and its ads, and the role that advertising played in developing a national market for consumer goods, creating demand for mass-produced items, and shifting the consumption habits of Americans. Focusing primarily on popular journals and magazines with national circulations, Norris traces how, by the 1920s, America had become a society in which consumption and spending had replaced old virtues. He examines a number of issues affecting this change, including how national markets developed, how consumers were convinced to buy products they had never seen before, what appeals manufacturers used to build markets, and how consumers were persuaded to purchase items that had previously been produced locally or in the home. Other factors that played a role in the transformation are also considered, such as the breakdown of localism, an increasingly educated citizenry, the potential for mass production, and a growth in per-capita income. Whenever possible, the advertisements themselves have been quoted and reproduced, fully illustrating Norris' premise that they are mirrors of the society that produced them. This study will be an important resource for courses in business history, economics, women's studies, and the history of advertising, as well as a valuable addition to college, university, and public libraries.

                                    Book Description

This collection aims to analyse, advertise, and criticize the contribution of industrial relations to social science understanding. It brings together leading scholars to reconsider the theoretical foundations of industrial relations and its potential contribution to the wider understanding of work and economic life, to learn what it can gain from a stronger engagement with these surrounding disciplines and national traditions. The introduction provides a critical, though broadly sympathetic, outline of the development of the mainstream industrial relations tradition. Part One recognizes the interdisciplinary character of industrial relations by concentrating on 'border encounters' with the cognate academic disciplines of sociology, economics, management, history, psychology, law, politics, and geography. Of particular interest is how far industrial relations has contributed to social science understanding beyond its own narrow borders. Part Two combines a major critical analysis of the American school, with three shorter discussions of Australia, Europe, and Japan. Part Three looks forward to the potential contribution of industrial relations to our understanding of work, employment, and society by identifying a variety of key dilemmas and debates which call for new interdisciplinary thinking. Finally, the book ends with a critical reassessment of the industrial relations tradition.
