        In order for any organization to fuel its growth, it must excel at product development. How to do this? An organization must first approach development with new proposals from every corner of the organization. Evaluate these ideas rationally and systematically and then select the best ideas. The organization's goal is to create a portfolio of the best selected ideas to help the organization grow. An organization must then manage these projects in four stages: building case justification, concept feasibility, product development, and pilot and production startup.

        Taking a new product from the basic idea to the product requires many steps that are connected in specific ways. An organization must rely on marketing intelligence, product definition, planning, research and development, process development, product launch, and after sales service. To be successful an organization must learn:

        · Brainstorm new product ideas
        · Coordinate the production and manufacturing processes
        · Ensure an effective IT system is in place
        · Lead the development instead of just managing

        Francis' book should be read - and heeded - by anyone interested in creating successful new products. It is particularly valuable because it provides a comprehensive view of the processes and problems of creating new products. He not only describes the core process from idea generation through product launch, but he also includes the often neglected issues of information systems support, accounting for the costs and benefits of R&D programs, and patents and other legal issues associated with intellectual property.

        The scope of the work is broader than it first appears to be. Francis, a well-known expert in manufacturing, describes product creation processes and methodologies equally useful for manufactured products and for service "products".

        The book is rich in checklists on important topics, such as metrics of R&D performance, computing your leadership quotient, and motivating workers. He ends each chapter with a section called "Ideas for Action". These are tips on what to do to move from his printed page to action in the reader's organization. They are very useful.

        The most important message of the book is that successful product creation cannot be left to the R&D department; it requires the joint efforts of every organizational function. People from other departments who affect product creation will find this book very valuable, as will the R&D people themselves.

                  This is a very interesting book by its unique structure, which basically is a documentary recorder of an advertising conference. Instead of only one or two authors writing a book, The Future of Advertising is most likely written by a group of people who have been involved in the advertising industry for years. Richard Adler's research, the future of advertising on the attention economy, is the major documentary piece of this book, following by various opinions and afterthoughts from other advertising experts. To me, which reading this book, it felt like I was like actually attending a conference and listening to Adler¡¦s report and others¡¦ discussions from diverse perspectives.

                  According to Adler, in the future, the total amount of information given will keep increasing, but the actual amount of human attention is fixed because no one can absorb all the information that surrounds us. Advertisers have to create more innovative strategies and techniques to ensure their message is delivered efficiently to their consumers. One of his predictions ¡Vin fact, has already begun to happen ¡Vis that ¡§individuals will be able to exercise more control over the media content that they consume¡¨(p.43). In the future, not only our capacity to produce information increased extraordinarily, but our ability to distribute it is also expanding rapidly. Once the media content (or advertising content) becomes democratized, the distinction between consumers and media-content creators will diminish. To advertisers, a possible solution to overcome such challenge is to invent a ¡§new content¡¨, which the boundary between advertising and editorial information is ¡§nonexistent¡¨ or ¡§indistinct¡¨.

                  I highly recommend this book as a ready primer to those people who are interested in advertising, future forecasting, and advertising-and-society relationships. Several significant social issues, such as privacy, social ecology, cultural role and attention economy, are all addressed at this book. Perhaps, its brevity allows for expedient reading, yet does not provide ample sufficient discussions.

                    Kept at an executive level, this book delves just deep enough for you to grasp the various concepts of transport planning, where costs occur and how to maximise benefits in both the public and the private transport sector. You will enjoy this book even more if you have some macro-economical background, nevertheless it never goes into complex formulas or calculations.

                            Unlike many books on systems analysis, the Robertsons' does not confuse analysis with "design". This book focuses on developing an unambiguous system specification which both the sponsoring end users and the developers can understand.

                            The examples are clear and well chosen, small enough to be understood, big enough not to be trivial. This is an excellent main textbook for a course in systems analysis.

                            The documentation methodology is derived from the classic DeMarco "structured analysis". The book's main weakness is insufficient treatment of object-oriented concepts, especially in data definition.

                            5 out of 5 stars Excellent Bring You Up To Date Book.......1997-06-19

                            For persons needing a well written platform independent non-dogmatic textbook and workbook to bring them up to date on structured systems analysis, this book is excellent. Includes a brief explaination of how to transition to the design process (including Object Oriented Design (OOD) as well as old fashioned 3rd and 4th generation languages), but refers you to other books for design (and project estimation) details. Alas, has no recommendations for best CASE tools (even though they would be circa 1994). The book will take you at least 20-40 hours to go through the "Easiest" trail even without doing the work. I suggest that you read it 3 times: 1) Easiest (but don't do the work, 2) : Promenade, 3) Easiest again but doing the work and simultaneously creating mini-specifications and data dictionary of the analysis strategy (see chapter 1.18 before you start). Quite frankly, while the book implies you can do this with index cards and paper (you can for the case study), in real life you will need a good CASE tool (which is why no recommendations are disappointing). I have tried to cobble together my own "CASE toolkit" using commonly available workprocessing, project management, and flowcharting packages, and it is extremely cumbersome and impractical to use. Also useful would be more practical interview tips (which are short-changed in exchange for more empasis on how to properly analysize DFD and ERDs) such as 1) avoid tape recording users (it makes them nervous and is impractical), 2) listen to the user discribe his system, then when he has finished, then draw the DFD and ERD while repeating back what he said (writing/drawing while users are talking distracts you and the user), etc, etc, etc. Thus this book is a good book to bring an "old hand" up to date as well as a good first semester course book for Computer Science majors, which would need to be followed by a second semestor "live" internship. Together with its bibliography, this book will get you started in system analysis (again). I suggest you read this book first before attempting to read OOA (Object Oriented Analysis) books and implimenting OOA stratagy, especially if you are an "old hand" and are unfamiliar with C++ or JAVA
