2 out of 5 stars So much to read--so little to gain.......2007-09-12

The problem with interesting titles is that they usually promise much more than the authors can deliver. Such is the case with this book. "The purpose of the book," write authors, "is to provide academic leaders, faculty members, and graduate students themselves with research findings, analyses, and recommendations that will help them prepare the future professoriate more successfully..." Unfortunately, the findings seem to be fairly obvious, the analyses superficial, and recommendations very general and clearly inadequate. Of course, one will find in the book a plethora of interesting facts, descriptions of studies, and statistics. For that reason alone the book could be useful to academic professionals.
Perhaps one of the reasons the book does not fulfill its promise is that Paths to the Professoriate is a compilation of a variety of articles of very uneven quality and importance (as often is the case with edited work). The book is divided into four parts. Part One, an introduction titled "The Challenge to Prepare the Next Generation of Faculty," sets the tone for the book and Part Four, "Synthesis, Lessons, and Future Directions," concludes it. Parts Two and Three are the bulk of the book containing ten chapters between them. The former focuses on the research and the latter on the "Strategies for reform."
As with everything else in this book, the opening chapter leaves the reader wondering what exactly is the point of this work. Or, to use the title of the chapter, what exactly is "The Challenge to Prepare the Next Generation of Faculty." The authors assure us that "improving graduate education and ... strengthening the preparation process for future faculty, has become a significant issue in higher education," (p. 3) but do not really explain why this is so. One would expect that a growing interest in the area is the result of perceived problems with and inadequacies of the existing graduate education, recruiting, and training, but the authors are not able to go beyond generalities that explain very little.
On the authors' list of factors contributing to interest in improving graduate education are the role of teaching assistants, labor market issues, graduate student attrition rates, and "the increasing recognition of the graduate experience as significant stage in preparation for a faculty career." (p. 8). But then again, they fail to get to the core of the matter. When writing about teaching assistants they use a quote from another author that sounds interesting, but is of no help: "There is a growing awareness... that there are many serious problems associated with the utilization of graduate teaching assistants..." (p. 4). What exactly are these `serious problems'? The only suggestion (one sentence without further explanation) is that in the last several decades, research became increasingly more important for universities leaving teaching of many undergraduate courses to teaching assistants. But there are so many questions that need to be answered. Although the increasing importance of research could be perceived as a problem for undergraduate students who often get poorly prepared assistants as their primary teachers, it could also be seen as an advantage to graduate students by giving them the necessary teaching experience. As the authors state two paragraphs later, "universities developed increasingly credible programs for preparing graduate students to teach." (p. 5). Thus, one wonders again, what are exactly the shortcomings of these programs?

The same lack of clarity can be seen in the next section regarding the labor market issues. The authors support their point by another general statement: "Graduate education does not match the needs and demands of the changing academy and broader society." (p. 7). What are the needs and demands? Where do the universities fail in graduate education? What is the problem?

Of course, it could be expected that the individual chapters following the introduction will provide more detailed explanation. Yet, they are not much better than the introduction.

In several chapters there are signs that the authors understand that many questions can be answered only when reaching a consensus on what exactly a doctoral education means and should be (e.g., Chapter Ten: "Re-envisioning the Ph.D."), but any serious discussion is quickly abandoned and the chapters return to slogan-like statements and recommendations. For example, "Students need help getting started in graduate school in ways that promote success," "Key to the success of doctoral students is the extent to which they connect with the people and cultures of their departments," "Any changes in graduate education will require greater understanding and appreciation for the diversity represented among students and future professors." (pages 273-284)

Overall, the publication can serve as a beginning of an interesting and important debate on the subject. The book serious shortcomings should actually be a wake-up call for much more serious treatment of the matter. What is needed is methodologically sound research, reexamination of the existing data, more in depth analysis, and finally, more concrete and specific recommendations.

5 out of 5 stars I love the Australian perspective.......2002-12-03

I read the first book by this author, 101 Ways to Market Your Business and I really liked the style that it is written in. I especially liked the fact that it was written by an Australian - giving a fresh persepctive on marketing and advertising. When I saw this new title I was intrigued. On reading it I was very impressed by the information and the practical, simple advice offered. The author has covered everything imaginable in a way that empowers the business owner to surge forward and succeed. I was very impressed and I must say that I am not easily impressed. Good on this Aussie guru.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I had this book ten years ago.......2002-11-29

This is without a doubt, a book for anyone in business or anyone thinking about starting a business. The author clearly identifies the most common business mistakes (which I have made plenty of) and he describes how to avoid making them. This is definitely one of the few books that should be considered absolutely essential to any library. The author writes in a very clear manner that I found particularly easy to relate to. He also makes you feel OK about making mistakes rather than feeling like a[dummy]. I have no doubt that this book will help my business to prosper.

Both of these books are worth their weight in gold and beleive me, I have read a lot of business books. Spot on!!

3 out of 5 stars Laid Off or Fired, You Need Help to Make Money.......2006-06-23

If You are Laid Off or Redundant you need ideas to Make Money. First negotiate the best package or payoff from work. Second, how to make money from home for your future. This book does not go into a lot of details on how to start a business, probably the most likely options if you are laid off over 40.

5 out of 5 stars Essential information helpfully presented.......2002-09-11

The problem is that when we have a job we tend to invest in the illusion of security. We also feel disloyal to our employer if we prepare for the time of separation.

The funny thing is that when the whack comes (and to often it is as unforseen as club to the back of the head) you can bet that the company has prepared very carefully every aspect of our severance package before they apply that hit to the sweet spot on your noggin.

Very few people have the clout to get an employment contract let alone negotiate up front for a separation arrangement. For most of us we live in an "at will" world. The author points out that this "at will" isn't necessarily as once sided as our employers would have us believe.

They rely on the shock of the moment, our lack of preparation, and our shame for losing our job to streamline us into signing away rights and getting the heck out of dodge. It isn't in their interests to give you time to think and prepare, and, frankly, when you are laying off 1,000 or 10,000 people you simply can't enter into separate negotiations with every one of them. However, I can tell you that in the UK employees are routinely given employment contracts as they are hired.

This is why every employee should read this book today. Prepare and think about the ever more inevitable separation. Empoyees need to be on as equal a footing with their employer as they can; given current laws and the limitations of economics. We need to have more open eyes and be less sentimental about our jobs.

This book is a great first step or two on that path. Just as profits are made when you purchase an asset (buying at the right price) - not when you sell them, the basis for your separation (which you should accept as inevitable in some non-specified future) is laid when you are hired. We need to be smarter when we go into these situations and realize the planning and, well, practiced sincerity (masked insincerity) that employers now use during hiring, throughout the term of employment and during termination.

They aren't bad people, necessarily, it is just that they are prepared for what is happeneing and most employees are not. The message of this very helpful book is "Get Prepared!".

It isn't that they are all bad people; it is the nature of the current business and legal climate that leads to much of this nonsense.

This book will provide a great morale booster and provide some thoughts that can help even a newly terminated employee create a decent plan of counter-attack. Better to use this information and take positive action than be pushed downstream like so many cut trees.

5 out of 5 stars "Now I know what to do, and how to do it.".......2000-10-17

Before I came across Mr. Sklover's book, I didn't know where to begin, or what had to be done. It was recommended to me by a friend who used it to help her, and it did. This book starts off slowly, and proceeds step by step in leading you through the process of Going Back, Asking for More, and Getting It..In Writing. It is the book on this subject that I believe will be the book everyone will read, use and keep...for the next time.

                              5 out of 5 stars A Great Resource Book.......2000-10-16

Written in plain English. Deals with the legal basics, emotional scars, and what's reasonable to ask for. Even has a list of 101 things to possibly ask for. I needed these things very much, and found them in this book. Provides a good insight, too, into what negotiating with your ex-boss, and Human Resources, is all about. I never realized that they wanted something from me even more than I needed the extra severance from them! This book is highly motivating, too. I recommend it for anyone.

                                Book Description

This provocative and theoretically sophisticated book reveals how capitalism produced and sustained a culture of its own in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

"Richards provides a valuable account of the interaction between cultural and business development in Victorian England by focusing on the evolution of advertising. Through an examination of five case studies, ranging from how advertisers employed images of the Crystal Palace Exhibition of 1851 to their use of images of women just before WWI, he argues that the British developed a new type of culture in the mid and late-19th century--a new way of thinking and living increasingly based upon the possession of material goods, commodities. Revising the findings of some earlier scholars, Richards shows that 'cultural forms of consumerism . . . came into being well before the consumer economy did.' The 50 well-reproduced advertising images greatly enhance the value of this study." --M. Blackford, "Choice"

                                  Book Description

3 out of 5 stars A very good attempt to intewave IT startegy to Business.......2003-10-06

In my 23 years of experience of working in IT, I would say that this is the first book on IT strategy that attempts to make IT a PART of startegic intent of the business.

No doubt, the book is hard to read and comprehend, but the effort is worth it.

I would have given it an higher rating but for the fact that practical examples is missing which would have made the book more complete.

An inane pill to swallow. The book says little in its 341 pages. I'll never get that time back.

4 out of 5 stars A good toolkit for IT Strategic Planning.......2002-08-22

This book present Strategic Planning as a combination of cartesian analysis and art. The author draw a lot on the principles found in classics in the area, namely the Art of War from Sun Tzu and The Prince from Machiavelli.
I personally liked this book: it provides the basic toolkit to do the job. Strategic planning is clearly presented as a forward looking process dealing with mega-issues - not a cumbersome process that generate lots of documentations that nobody read.
If you are looking for detailed checklists and documentation templates, this is not the rigth book for you.

1 out of 5 stars Too theoritical and far too convoluted.......2002-05-05

This book uses convoluted methods to explain strategic planning. It is all theory without any examples of how to use the author's methods (probably because even he couldn't figure them out!). Avoid it like the plague, if you can. Unfortunately, it's required reading for a textbook for some IT strategic planning classes.
