From the supplier: Bostwick-Braun received ISO 9000 certification in Jul 1997, making it the first hardware distributor to receive such a certification. Pres Bill Bollin expects the more than $60,000 spent on consultants and certification to be outweighed by higher fill rates, fewer shipping errors and other benefits. Bollin also explains that the company's goal is 5.5 errors by the end of 1997.

                      Book Description

Here is the ultimate handbook for engineers, architects, contractors, specifications workers, and hardware managers who need to deliver products and services at a consistently high level of quality. It introduces ISO 9000, a proven method of building a quality track record that will stand up under the closest scrutiny even in the most competitive environments.

ISO 9000 in Construction enables construction professionals—from architects and engineers to contractors and suppliers—to develop quality standards and procedures precisely suited to their particular needs and responsibilities. It offers step-by-step instructions on the implementation and management of an ISO 9000 quality assurance system and demonstrates how the system puts the quality-management process into effect before work begins and detects and corrects problems before they reach disastrous proportions.

The book introduces the 20 basic elements of ISO 9000 and describes how each can be implemented in a wide array of construction-related companies. It coaches readers in the development of quality manuals, general quality procedures, work instructions, and the forms that are used in a quality assurance system. Numerous case studies demonstrate the ability of ISO 9000 to improve a company's quality performance, avoid costly errors that erode profits, and produce satisfied customers eager to use the company's services again.

Companies with ISO 9000 certification are already given contract preference in Europe and Australia. It is likely that within a few years the same will be true in North America. This book helps construction-related firms get a head start on ISO 9000 compliance while raising their performance levels, improving efficiency and productivity, and assuring a fair profit from their goods and services.

The only ISO 9000 book tailor-made for the construction industry . . .

ISO 9000 compliance is rapidly becoming a prerequisite for companies seeking international construction contracts, and the same may soon be true for firms operating solely within North America. Until now, however, no book has approached ISO 9000 from the unique point of view of the construction industry and related fields.

This indispensable handbook offers a comprehensive, step-by-step interpretation of ISO 9000 quality standards and their implementation in the construction industry. This remarkably useful guide

For architects, engineers, contractors, specifications workers, hardware managers, and other professionals in construction-related industries, ISO 9000 in Construction is the key to achieving more consistent performance levels, improved efficiency and productivity, a solid reputation for quality, and a sharper competitive edge.

2 out of 5 stars Is not what it ofers.......2001-03-21

Eventhough the introduction chapter of the book looks very promising, because it refers to some of the construction industry difficults/needs in achivieng consistent quality and customer satisfaction; when you read the contents there is no practical examples of "how to do it/implement it" in this sector. In general, it is another good interpretation of the ISO 9000 standars, it explains what do the requirements means and the basic implementation steps, but if you already know the standars and you are looking for help in the implementation process at a CONSTRUCTION company...this is too basic and it would hardly help to "land" the standar at your company. Also, for someone who is not familiar with the ISO 9000 group of standars, the book is difficult to follow, because it mix different standars requirements (ISO 9004-1,ISO 9004-2) instead of focusing in the basic requirements (then it would be ISO 9001) you need to implement a quality assurance system and then the other requirements you would need (i.e. ISO 9004) to improve your quality assurance system.

                              Book Description

In this thought-provoking book, David Hart challenges the creation myth of post--World War II federal science and technology policy. According to this myth, the postwar policy sprang full-blown from the mind of Vannevar Bush in the form of Science, the Endless Frontier (1945). Hart puts Bush's efforts in a larger historical and political context, demonstrating in the process that Bush was but one of many contributors to this complex policy and not necessarily the most successful one. Herbert Hoover, Karl Compton, Thurman Arnold, Henry Wallace, Robert Taft, and Curtis LeMay--along with more familiar figures like Bush--are among those whose endeavors he traces.

Hart places these policy entrepreneurs in the broad scheme of American political development, connecting each one's vision of the state in this apparently esoteric policy area to the central issues, events, and figures of mid-century America and to key theoretical debates. Hart's work reveals the wide range of ideas, often in conflict with one another, that underlay what later observers interpreted as a "postwar consensus." In Hart's view, these visions--and the interests and institutions that shape their translation into public policy--form the enduring basis of American politics in this important area. Policymakers today are still grappling with the legacies of the forged consensus.

                                  Book Description

Picture a childhood void of the joyful images and sensations we associate with play--a childhood lacking in curiosity, diversity and symbolic meaning--a childhood without playmates or friends. Children on the autism spectrum are among those who face serious challenges learning how to play in both social and imaginative ways.

But no longer do these children have to remain lost souls on the fringes of playgrounds and other social gathering places. In Peer Play and the Autism Spectrum: The Art of Guiding Children's Socialization and Imagination, Pamela Wolfberg turns her award-winning research into a practical manual for practitioners and caregivers seeking to address the unique and complex challenges children on the autism spectrum experience.

This practical guide offers an introduction to the basic principles, tools and techniques that comprise the Integrated Play Groups model, designed to support children of diverse ages and abilities on the autism spectrum (novice players) in mutual play experiences with typical peers and siblings (expert players). Small groups of children regularly play together under the guidance of an adult facilitator (play guide) through a carefully tailored system of support. The emphasis is on maximizing children's developmental potential as well as intrinsic desire to play, socialize and form meaningful relationships with peers. At the same time, an equally important focus is on teaching the peer group to be more accepting, responsive and inclusive of children who relate and play in different ways. This innovative book is full of forms, checklists and other tools to facilitate implementation.

4 out of 5 stars One of the many tools to use with treating PDD.......2006-02-22

There is so much out there about Autism, classified as a pervasive developmental and neuropsychiatric disorder, whose causes are not fully understood. I feel this book is not limited to those with PDD or ASD; it is useful for any child, as other reviewers have mentioned.

Some of the techniques that may be useful in treating a child with PDD, are the systems used in Integrated Play Groups, so well outlined in this book. It seems particularly valuable in mainstreaming a child into "neuro-typical" culture, something that we caregivers want for our loved ones with PDD.

However please remember, in spite of the tone of this book, that with Autism Spectrum Disorders there are no silver bullets, and "play therapy" should not be seen as the end all of treatments for a child with PDD. It should, at best, be viewed as one of the many tools at a caregiver's disposal.

5 out of 5 stars The best book there is to help your child overcome autism........2006-01-03

This book has been the single most important reference book I've used to help my son overcome autism.

Two years ago -- my 4 year old son didn't know how to relate to other children, he didn't speak to other children, he would just stare at them as if they were bugs he was studying. Using the methods expertly outlined in this magnificent book -- my son now plays with others, chats away with them, and has learned much more about how to function in the neuro-typical world. Since the business of children is play -- lack of play skills keeps most children with autism from taking part in childhood activities.

Autism is a communicative and social disorder, this book did more than I could possibly say to help me learn how to teach my son to communicate and to play with others. This book taught me, and can teach all parents and caregivers, that we ourselves can do so much to help our children overcome autism's ill effects, and the basic core of that is in helping them learn how to play.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, Practical and Refreshing.......2003-10-26

This book is an excellent practical resource for promoting play in children with autism or ASD. This book begins from a philosophy that incorporates and respects all children. It provides numerour practical resources and instructions for setting up integrated play groups. It incorporates research and resources. A refreshing book I can't wait to apply to children with ASD in my occupational therapy practice

From the supplier: The Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) method can be effectively used to teach the ancient martial art of tai chi chuan, which is a form of choreographed boxing, in a multicultural environment. The LMA provides an objective and elemental structure for explaining basic concepts that are easily understood by anybody regardless of race. These movement basics are flow, weight, time and space. Its use helps teachers become more objective in determining the rightness or wrongness of a certain movement in the sport.

                                        Book Description

Since the mid 1980s academic libraries have established minority residency programs in an effort to increase the representation of librarians of color in their institutions. Now more than a decade later, these programs continue to be developed. Essays written by librarians of color who participated in residency programs, and administrators whose institutions made the programs possible, remind us of the continuing need for diversity in academic libraries.

Seasoned IT project managers will gain many insights from this book. Don't expect to find mechanical techniques such as how to develop a WBS or use earned value to control a project - those are not within the scope of this book. What is within scope is advice backed by cases and examples for keeping a project on track and within budget. While the techniques covering the mechanics of project management are missing, the techniques covering strategies and tactics for ensuring project success are in abundance.

What makes this book invaluable to seasoned IT project managers is the focus on organization, meeting stakeholder needs, and overcoming barriers - especially political barriers. In addition, the author approaches project delivery in a structured, methodical manner that places the role of an IT project manager and the task of project delivery into a clear context. Most books on project management either gloss over these important areas, focusing instead on PM techniques, or avoid them altogether.

Key features I especially like are:
                                                  - Section I (Preparing the Organization for IT Projects), which illustrates common problems associated with IT project management (and there are many) with actual cases. In addition, Chapter 2 is one of the best summaries of aligning IT to business during project inception and maintaining that focus throughout the life cycle of the project. The material in the subsequent chapters in this section go into additional detail in key areas.

                                                  - Section II (Planning for Success) is rich with advice and supporting real life examples for developing a viable business case, managing risks, avoiding common pitfalls and engaging stakeholders.

                                                  - Section III (Design and Development) contains material that is not unique to this book. Most of the material is included in most of the better books on software project management, although the case studies are interesting. I would have liked more focus in interaction between the project team and the operational support team, such as assuring reliability and supportability are handled in this phase. Also, addressing the big picture of how the design and development fits into infrastructure and service level management would have distinguished this section.

Section IV (Project Delivery) is somewhat weak because it stops with testing and does not address making the transition from project to production in the depth. This is a critical milestone in any IT project and deserves more than the cursory treatment it was given.

Although I think there are gaps in Section IV, this book is still one I highly recommend because it does address topics that most other IT project management books do not. More importantly, it is filled with excellent information and advice that can be put to immediate use, and will change your thinking about how to properly approach and manage an IT project.
