                      Book Description

"This book will serve as a light-hearted but strong life-line to many readers who are for one reason or another steeling themselves to walk away from the ivory tower."

                      --Jennifer Lee Carrell, Free-lance writer

This book provides concrete advice and support for readers moving from the advanced academic world to the real world. The authors cover all the big issues including skill and interest assessment, writing effective resumes and cover letters, preparing for interviews, and evaluating job offers. Written in a lively, engaging style that from a "been there, done that" perspective, this is exactly the kind of information people need when academia unravels around them.

                      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Fine for what it is, but overpriced for what you get.......2003-01-30

The authors attempt to tailor their writing to Ph.Ds who wish to pursue careers outside of academia. This is an admirable goal, as this is a genre in which relatively little has been written. Unfortunately, WEYCDWAPhD doesn't add significantly beyond what one finds in most job-seeking books, mostly relegating itself to basics like how to write a resume, how to interview for a job, etc. Their use of the Myers-Briggs personality indicator to guide readers to jobs which fit their personalities was fine, if necessarily abbreviated because of the book length. I liked the chapter on negotiating, as that is something too many get-a-job books for new graduates don't cover enough - I suppose because those books' intended readers often have no advanced skills to barter with, something not true of this book. ... However, this would be a good acquisition for university job centers or libraries.

                        5 out of 5 stars A Must Have!.......2005-09-09

This is a wonderful book and a must have for anyone looking to strengthen their organization. It is full of clear, logical instructions on how to make everyone come together. This book was worth the money and time!

5 out of 5 stars Great addition to your OD/OB toolbox.......2003-09-15

"Beyond Teams" is an excellent reference for anyone interested in charting or changing results in their collaborative networks. From the standpoint of anyone involved in Organizational Behavior/Organizational Development, from manager, practitioner, academic, consultant or team member, this book provides many useful insights and has the feel of actual fieldwork used in its writing. The book is laid out in such a manner that it can be applied in any given situation. The ten guiding principles are structured and repeated in various collaborative work settings consistently. This allows the reader to apply the principles in their unique setting. The ten guiding principles are then explained for each general situation with a short description given for when the principles are not working and, more importantly, when they are working. Too often in this field books are written from a purely academic viewpoint or "this is how you fix it" approach. This book is different in that you can sense the fieldwork in the research and you see how things are supposed to work as well as when they are not working. This gives the reader the option of working on a group's deficiencies while complementing their achievements. This book is a "must have" for anyone interested in improving team communications.

                                Book Description

The 1960s provides Warlaumont with the backdrop for examining the struggle of advertising during the anti-establishment movement in one of America's most colorful but turbulent decades. Targeted by the counterculture, threatened with government regulation, criticized as a "waste maker" by social critics, weakened by internal strife between the liberal and traditional forces within the industry, and faced with the consumption-weary public, advertising faced one of its most challenging times. Yet surprisingly, it made history with its unprecedented creativity and innovation during the 60s. Distancing itself from the Establishment, advertising, as a "wolf in sheep's clothing," joined the cultural revolution, changed the way it related to its audience, and attempted to seduce consumers with humor, resonance, candidness, and a "power-to-the-people" approach. Masking its ultimate goal to maintain, preserve, and promote the consumption ethic and business elite, advertising joined an infectious wave to overturn the old and stodgy ways. Becoming a "turncoat" by appearing to abandon its traditional materialistic and authoritarian stance--even mimicking it in some instances--advertising became a cause celebre with its colorful and humorous campaigns, validating itself while under fire. Using the 60s as a backdrop, Warlaumont examines the struggle of a traditional institution during one of America's most turbulent decades. Scholars, students, and researchers involved with business, communications, and advertising history as well as the general public interested in the 1960s will find this study fascinating.

                                Book Description

The rapidly changing nature of the modern industrial world has helped spark a radical rethinking of the design of corporations, changes no less revolutionary than the wave of innovations associated with the names of Frederick Taylor and Henry Ford at the dawn of this century. In Redesigning the Firm, nineteen experts from one of the nation's premier business schools, the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, take an informed look based on their own research at various aspects of this revolution, offering managers a host of insights and powerful tools for orchestrating change in their firm. Redesigning the Firm illuminates many of the challenges that confront the executive, approaching the issue from a wide variety of perspectives. The book considers, for instance, whether the firm's stockholders, directors, and managers should reevaluate how they distribute power and share information, and it explores why external board members often fail to exercise a strong voice in governance. It looks at the changing boundary of the firm, as partnerships and alliances have become more important, examining this new development in three types of market: emerging markets such as Eastern Europe, markets where economies of scale provide a critical advantage, and dynamic markets where speed is essential. It examines the use of suppliers in Japanese, American, and European firms, and finds the former to be more efficient. Some of the essays are quite eye-opening. For instance, one chapter demonstrates that firms can increase product variety at no extra cost, revealing how a study of the automotive industry shows that investing in training, in flexible manufacturing processes, and in better operations management will increase variety without compromising productivity or lowering quality. And one chapter sounds a strong note of dissent, contending that the design of organizations matters little to a global competitor--what matters is how managers think about the world, and how the operating procedures they use guide decision-making and behavior. In the final section, editors Bowman and Kogut reflect on two outstanding issues concerning the design of the firm: how much of what managers used to believe was critical to their success can they place outside their ownership boundaries; and how to deal with the complex challenges that modular design presents. The editors apply their conclusions to the Wharton School itself, making the book particularly valuable for anyone concerned with the quality and future of business education in America. Here then is the best thinking by leading experts in corporate design, who examine the best ways to generate speed, variety, and flexibility, to expand the firm over time and over national boundaries, and to prepare a corporation for the next century.

The World Bank's commitment in 1996 to become a global knowledge bank proposed broad-ranging internal and external changes aimed at expanding the sharing of knowledge among staff, clients, and partners. While the transfer of knowledge and information had always been a dimension of the Bank's role, the knowledge initiative sought to broaden the scope and raise the profile of this function. The purpose was to improve the quality of Bank operations and enhance the capacity of client countries to achieve development goals. This review finds that the Bank has made good progress in establishing the tools and activities to support its initiative, but it has not established adequate business processes and management responsibilities for achieving the strategic intent of making knowledge sharing a way of doing business and empowering clients. Although access to Bank knowledge has improved, improved access does not guarantee that the shared knowledge will be adopted, adapted, and applied. For that to happen, knowledge sharing has to be embedded in work processes. The review recommends that the Bank take three sets of actions: More strategic direction and oversight of the Bank's knowledge processes by Bank management Linking knowledge-sharing activities to lending and nonlending processes Setting monitorable outcome objectives and supporting performance indicators for knowledge-sharing programs and activities with agreed procedures for monitoring and evaluating Bank knowledge-sharing programs and activities.
