Not if you want above a 1450, and sample tests are poor.......2004-07-28

This book will not get you a 1600. The tests are not timed well; I can finish most between 50-60% of the time given. Reading passages are just weird. It doesn't feel like an authentic test. If you want to test yourself, you should use 10 Real SATs.

Concerning the new 2005 Spring Test, the book really has nothing more than a short summary about it.

It has a nice vocab list with sentences, but why spend all your money on this huge book when you can just get an SAT vocab book?

The CD that comes along is pretty nice. Fun games and cool flashcards. However the 'lessons' on the CD are slow and not worth the time. It's for people who can't concentrate studying on their own with a book and prefer a humor-filled animated cartoon telling them basic fundamentals that can be found in any book or online.

The strategies in the book can be read in a day or two.

I suggest this book for anyone just beginning to prep for the SAT. It doesn't teach you anything great or anything that you do not already know. It's a standard book. Rather buy a used old SAT book from an used bookstore.

If you're getting over a 1450, or even a 1400,skip this one.

I have really looked a long time to find a book that has a practical management perspective. Most of the books I've read on virtual teams either focus on bits and bytes (which I don't need since I'm an IT Director) or high level organizational theory. This book had some really practical suggestions that I could implement to improve communication and control for my team.

If you are managing geographically distributed teams this is a "save your life" kind of book. Short and to the point with techniques based on actual research instead of myths or stories. I found the 4 key principles for effective distance communication very helpful. I saw immediate improvement in my team's communications once we began using the ideas.

I rarely write reviews, and as an author myself I'm loath to criticize another's work. But this one I couldn't let go by...

At 147 pages (main text) there was nowhere near enough "meat" to justify ...[the price tag.]

The writing style was boring and pedantic.

Most of the chapters just skimmed the surface and lacked
substance; the topics are covered much more thoroughly by other
authors.

Chapter 6, Networking Technology, at 12 pages, was much too
"thin" and already out of date; less than 2 full pages
were devoted to the 'section' on securing the network -- a
major concern these days.

I recently reviewed a number of books on distance work for a current project at a research center (...)and found Haywood's to be the best in its class. Haywood does a great job of describing the problems of distance work from different perspectives (manager, employee), and she gives sound advice on how to address these problems. Her prescribed solutions are balanced, and include some new technologies (e.g. personal web pages), but mostly she gives good advice on raising awareness of problems and setting reasonable policies for use of communications.

Haywood's book has more analysis and fewer case studies than others in this genre, which is what I was looking for. She does include plenty of vignettes, but they are short and to the point.

This book provides a valuable strategic framework with which to implement Six Sigma within a company today. Unlike most books on Six Sigma, which focus on the granular details of six sigma implementation, this book focuses on implementation from a strategic perspective; in other words, on how a company's top leadership team must be intimately involved in making Six Sigma work by creating an internal "climate of alignment" to make Six Sigma initiatives suceed. From my perspective, a critical resource for today's CEOs and their top leadership teams!

Unless you are the CEO of a company and have total control over implementing a Six Sigma program, I wouldn't recommend this book. It doesn't go much into the meat of Six Sigma, but is focused around developing a Six Sigma culture within your organization. It is also very redundant, repeating the same themes over and over throughout the book. A good editor could have reduced this book to 50 pages. Not recommended.

Well written from the strategic view of Six Sigma and where it fits into your existing corporate methodologies, process efforts and strategic initiatives. The center chapters of the book (3 through 5) are extremely rich in content. The PriceWaterhouse pedigree is obvious in the writing style and view point. Well done!

Steeped in practical examples and avoids statistical jargon.......2002-12-01

A lot of the Six Sigma books and articles I have read appear to assume you greatly miss your college statistics class. This book focuses on issues, ideas and examples relevant to senior management, while referencing some of the tools and techniques that will be essential to execute successfully. Let's face it -- senior executives need examples to create the sense of urgency and "what can be" through Six Sigma; there are plenty of books, consultants and training firms who can take you from that commitment through execution. I highly recommend this book for managers who want to understand why they should seriously consider Six Sigma or similar approaches (TQM, CQI, etc.) to improve their company's or business unit's effectiveness in meeting their customer's needs and efficiency vs. competitors.

Despite the authorship of a Yalie, this textbook serves as an excellent introduction to the wonderful world of electical engineering for the liberal arts student. It is mostly useless for those already familiar with the basic concepts behind signals and systems. Nevertheless, the majority of the population that is unfamiliar with the world of EE could definitely benefit from this text. I personally found very easy to understand, almost childish, but that is because it served as the text for a much harder course at Princeton. The reason the course at Yale which this book was made for is so popular is because it is a complete gut class. Although I am inclined to write this book off, the unfortunate lack of tech-savvy among much of the populace necessitates this book. It should provide a cure for most who read it.
