Through seven separate research studies on thousands of sales people and buyers, as well over 100 personal interviews with America's top sales organizations including Microsoft, Coca Cola, Nike, Merrill Lynch, Fidelity, America Online, Yahoo, Disney, IBM., Intel, UPS, Pfizer, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Ford, Sony, Southwest Airlines, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Oracle, Dell, Cisco Systems, MasterCard, Lucent, Xerox, and Marriott, nationally-recognized sales territory trouble-hooter Josh Gordon has identified the 17 motivational approaches essential for success. Customer Reviews:
Insightful.......2001-12-12
An amazing book. Insightful and full of vision. But at the same time it gets down to brass tacks and tells you how to close sales. It is a fun read and easy to follow. If you want to know how to win at selling today this book is for you.
Great book if you ignore the hype.......2001-02-25
Josh Gordon is a marketing genius. This book offers great insights into selling in the New Economy, but get this: a lot of the ideas he presents are not new. What is new is the unique perspective and packaging he offers. He takes the old and the new and makes them make sense together. I found it important for my own selling strategy but don't expect every page to be full of new ideas you haven't heard of before.
Great stuff!.......2001-02-16
I liked it a lot. Simple and fun to read. Lots of good ideas. It makes you think.
It sneaks up on you.......2001-01-22
This book sneaks up on you. It is a fun and easy read. I found it to be packed with practical suggestions and does a great job spelling out in specific terms how selling is different today Vs. 10 years ago. Then near chapter 15 it hit me..POW! If all this is true then people who run sales teams, like myself, need a freash look at the basic strategy they run with.
Relevant topic material, well organized.......2000-10-31
The book was very well organized, and very client-centric. I thought the detail of survey results was used well to bridge the chapters. A very relevant topic in today's fast-paced selling environment

ASIN: 0143034642
Release Date: 2005-02-01 |
Book Description
For forty years, Dean Smith coached the University of North Carolina basketball team with unsurpassed success. Now, in The Carolina Way, he explains his coaching philosophy and shows readers how to apply it to the leadership and team-building challenges they face in their own lives. In his wry, sensible, wise way, Coach Smith takes us through every aspect of his program, illustrating his insights with vivid stories. Accompanying each of Coach Smith's major points is a Player Perspective from a former North Carolina basketball star and an in-depth Business Perspective from Gerald D. Bell, a world-renowned leadership consultant and a professor at UNC's Kenan-Flagler Business School. The keystones of Coach Smith's coaching philosophy are widely applicable and centrally relevant to building successful teams of any kind.
Customer Reviews:
top ten book.......2007-09-27
I have enjoyed this book and have given it to friends and family on several occasions. This is not a book about basketball, but uses the sport to illustrate leadership priniples. Each chapter discusses a leadership concept and is broken into three parts- Coach Smith's insight, a player discussing how the concept affected him, and a business angle. This is easily in the top five books written about leadership!
Must Read for College Basketball fan.......2005-12-16
Dean Smith's book The Tarheel Way was a great read. This book is for kids 12 and up. Unlike many sports books it relates sports to the real world. Dean Smith and his co-writers do a great job of that.
Dean Smith's book talks about the way he ran his basketball team. Dean Smith was all about life lessons and how basketball related to the real world. He does a great job of explaining the recruiting process in his book. He also talks about players leaving early for the NBA and he is ok with that because it gives them financial security for life. He also emphasizes how basketball gives students life lessons that they can carry on in life, or in there work place. Dean Smith had a great understanding of the game of basketball and in life in general. In his book, it is forwarded by people like Roy Williams who have nothing but great respect for him as a coach, and is a person. If you are interested in how a college basketball team is run, Dean Smith's The Tarheel Way is a must read for you.
Excellent Team Builder.......2005-09-07
This book is more than your typical sports book. Sure, it's filled with stories about games, seasons, and individual players. Each chapter starts out with Coach Smith explaining a particular aspect of his coaching methodology. A Player's Perspective follows outlining how the particular aspect and Dr. Bell relates the aspect to the modern workplace. This book is all about building teams.
The Carolina Way can be summed up by these words: Play Hard; Play Together; Play Smart. For example, Coach Smith talks about recruiting players that will fit into his system. Dr. Bell then takes those ideas one step further and relates the recruiting to hiring workers. Another example is Dean Smith held regular one-on-one meetings with each of his players to discover their goals in life as well as basketball. Dr. Bell then outlines how you can pattern employee reviews around these same principals.
I personally got a lot out of this book and plan on implementing some of the strategies in my own team.
One of a Kind Coach.......2005-05-26
Dean Smith is without a doubt one of the best college basketball coaches in the history of the NCAA. I think the win total speaks for itself, and in this book he tells just how he has made it to that milestone. He gives details on his philosophy and past players weigh in on Smith's coaching. This is good for any young coaches out there, or just basketball fans in general. This book is a must have for anyone that loves basketball.
The Dean Smith Way!..........2005-03-12
Dean Smith is a great leader. He has won hundreds of games over the years and has accumulated many trophies that prove his worth as a coach. Great! I got that out of the way.
The Carolina Way should have been called the Dean Smith way. I believe that he would have been successful in almost any profession. He didn't try to win basketball games. He mastered the process that led to winning.
There are many coaches understand basketball X's and O's. Unlike Dean, some successful coaches walk around like they invented the basketball. The difference between Dean Smith and most coaches is his focus on working hard, working smart, and working together. Mastering these traits will help you become successful not matter what you do in life.
Who said nice guys always finish last?

Customer Reviews:
Lots of Inspiration.......2000-07-01
While it did't give all the answers (no book can), it certainly provided lots of ideas and inspiration - and a Go Get 'Em attitude about making extra cash at school.
Backward approach.......2000-05-18
This book would be helpful if a real entrepreneur, like one of the interview subjects, wrote it. Instead, the reader gets a bunch of interviews taped together with non-intuitive commentary from a hack who wants desperately to be one of the people he is interviewing.
A Great Book for Every College Entrepreneur.......2000-01-19
These were some of the best ideas for college based businesses I had ever heard. In addition, the interviews with the founders of theglobe.com and Hotmail were fantastic.

Book Description
The contributors to this collection provide a wealth of new analyses of both traditional and emerging aspects of entrepreneurship, from a variety of national perspectives and disciplines.
Globalization has begun to dismantle the barriers that traditionally segregated local business opportunities and local firms from their international counterparts. Local markets are becoming integral parts of broader, global markets. As globalization proceeds apace, entrepreneurs and small businesses will play a more prominent role in the global business arena. The volume is divided into three sections. The first looks at the internationalization process itself while the second focuses on factors facilitating this process in small and medium-sized firms. The last section examines emerging dimensions in management policy.
This book provides valuable insights for business leaders, policy formulators, students and academics alike in understanding and coping with our rapidly changing world.

I had been looking for information on Family Limited Partnerships. This book was very helpful. I found it answered alot of my questions about family limeted partnerships.
Excellent introduction to the benefits and pitfalls of FLP's.......1999-06-24
This is an excellent introduction to the benefits of starting a family limited partnership. The book also discusses potential pitfalls that can occur if an FLP is not set up correctly. It is well written and easy to read. The appendix includes a list of lawyers who can provide local expertise in major cities across the US. I have recommended the book to friends.
Too broad of an overview.......1999-05-14
I found this book a waste of time and money. It does not cover how to setup a Family Limited Partnership. It goes on to tell short stories about people/situations that have used Family Limited partnerships.

Controversial advice on appealing to age-old desires wtih space-age technology. Paul Postma, the contrarian marketing guru, proves that even as technological advances are channging the world, the reasons people make buying decisions have remained the same for centuries. In this timelss yet unorthodox treatise, Postma unveils the essence of marketing success--people still buy what appeals to their need for food, shelter, and companionship. Going beyond a theoretical framework, Postma then guides readers through the many ways in which today's technology can be used to sell to these basic human desires.

right! new media and still the same message.......2001-11-27
Refreshing new insights, in particular for business people who had some doubts on the hype stories. The first marketing book that presents complete new insights for the marketing process that help you to increase profits in a most effective way. Not to spend more money. Great!
A Solid Effort!.......2001-06-01
Paul Postma explains marketing strategies based on new technology. His strongest material emphasizes using information age technology to learn about consumers' behavior. New technologies, he explains, must be adapted to actual human behavior, because technology has changed quickly, but the human mind has not. Postma cites successful applications of these techniques, mostly from the Netherlands. A few concerns about the book: There are many good insights, but they sometimes get lost in the academic writing and extraneous detail. The basic marketing discussion is very basic. And, rapid change has already slightly dated some material though the book is only two years old. We [...] recommend this book to marketing managers and company owners who use the newest technology, and to academics teaching college classes on marketing methods.
practical grasp of marketing.......1999-11-26
The New Marketing Era is oozing with unargueable connections between basic human nature, new technology and how they are connected in what is a new world of marketing. Many people seem to have missed the human connection in the drive towards integrating new technologies such as the internet, commercial on-line services, email and multimedia CD-Roms.
Paul Postma helps us to keep our feet on the ground and, at the same time, get to grips with the new technology that surrounds us in this very down to earth book - by far the most practical book I have read this year.
Choppy read with little insight, a poor investment of time........1999-09-10
"The New Marketing Era: Marketing to the Imagination in a Technology-Driven World" was a very difficult read and didn't come close to meeting my expectations. Rarely do I come away from a book feeling that I have gleaned very little - yet I found this text far from profound and even more distant from enlightening. This would possibly be satisfactory if I were seasoned or an expert in the profession of marketing; but I am new to the "game."
The first four of the five chapters simply didn't flow. It is almost as if the author had started four separate books and decided he could combine his works and call it one. How else could the lack of continuity between the chapters be explained? Maybe the essence of the book was lost in the translation? Wish I could be more complementary. Postma undoubtedly is knowledgeable in numerous disciplines - he just failed to come across as an authority.
Excellent!.......1999-02-28
Paul is a straight-forward writer, with a good heart
Book Description
Lupton's empirical study of factories in post-war Britain used real workers rather than experimental groups. This influential work arrived at a more sympathetic and informed appreciation of workers in their dealings with management, compared with the more management-oriented view of the American Hawthorne experiments.
