        Book Description

"I would love to put this book in the hands of my new K-2 teachers! The clear and explicit directions for setting up a behavior plan, creating a weekly newsletter, and planning for the first day of school are just what new teachers need to get off to a great start."

Nancy D. Beasley, Principal Selwyn Elementary School Charlotte, NC

"I plan to use this text as an outstanding example of "best teaching practices." Mary Roberts is a skilled writer who communicates to beginning and veteran teachers the requisite skills for successful teaching. I urge school leaders to use the book as a guide for exemplary classroom teaching." John A. Brown, Associate Professor, The Citadel (The Military College of South Carolina) Department of Education, Division of Leadership Mary Presson Roberts remembers her first year of teaching fourteen years ago and the less than positive experience she had to overcome as she struggled alone to become the dedicated and excellent teacher she is today. Your Mentor: A Practical Guide for First-Year Teachers in Grades 1-3 is Roberts’ way of making sure other new teachers have the support they need when they need it. This practical, easy-to-implement guide was developed by surveying student teachers, substitute teachers, returning teachers, emergency credential teachers, and teacher educators. Their wide-ranging responses to what they wanted to see included in a teaching reference covered setting up a classroom, developing themes, instructional presentation, student assessment, parent communications, field trips, and more. Your Mentor was written as a stand-alone reference guide when no other support is available or as a supplement to existing school support programs. Actual samples of lesson units, themes, and communications with parents are included along with easy-to-follow, classroom-tested suggestions for: - Lesson plans - Record keeping - Using technology in the classroom - Planning special events - Developing and maintaining professional credentials and portfolios This book will be a valuable reference tool for those in their first few years of teaching, teachers returning to the classroom, and students considering the teaching profession. It will serve as daily companion—like the experienced teacher we all want and need.

          Book Description

Queueing network models have been widely applied as a powerful tool for modelling, performance evaluation, and prediction of discrete flow systems, such as computer systems, communication networks, production lines, and manufacturing systems. Queueing network models with finite capacity queues and blocking have been introduced and applied as even more realistic models of systems with finite capacity resources and with population constraints. In recent years, research in this field has grown rapidly. Analysis of Queueing Networks with Blocking introduces queueing network models with finite capacity and various types of blocking mechanisms. It gives a comprehensive definition of the analytical model underlying these blocking queueing networks. It surveys exact and approximate analytical solution methods and algorithms and their relevant properties. It also presents various application examples of queueing networks to model computer systems and communication networks. This book is organized in three parts. Part I introduces queueing networks with blocking and various application examples. Part II deals with exact and approximate analysis of queueing networks with blocking and the condition under which the various techniques can be applied. Part III presents a review of various properties of networks with blocking, describing several equivalence properties both between networks with and without blocking and between different blocking types. Approximate solution methods for the buffer allocation problem are presented.

                          Book Description

Traditional forms of collaboration are not sufficient for competing effectively in the more complex and dynamic environment of today’s business world. Face-to-face meetings between people of similar backgrounds have given way to increasingly complex working relationships. Organizations must be able to gain rapid access to knowledgeable people to meet constantly changing conditions and demands. More fluid, flexible, and easily reconfigurable collaborative relationships are necessary to produce the innovations that can make or break organizations¾even entire industries¾ and provide the opportunities that attract the talented and motivated employees who will make the difference between success and failure.

Business Without Boundaries helps managers address these challenges. The authors explore a number of wide-ranging, real-world cases to identify hands-on principles for successful collaboration. They offer managers and executives practical steps and tools for creating, facilitating, and supporting complex collaborations throughout their organizations. And they explain how to “team” across boundaries in the new global economy. The recommendations are specific enough to apply to particular forms of complex collaboration (for example supply chains, global product development teams, interorganizational alliances) but general enough to apply to new forms that have yet to emerge.

5 out of 5 stars Whether you think you can or think you can't...........2005-09-08

Let's begin with the assumption that many (if not most but certainly not all) limits are self-imposed. Then let us assume that it is in any organization's best interests to eliminate all limits to effective communication, cooperation, and collaboration. If you accept these two assumptions, then you will share my high regard for this volume in which Mankin and Cohen offer a cohesive, comprehensive, and cost-effective four-phase "action framework" to achieve "collaboration [as well as communication and cooperation] across time, distance, organization, and culture." To their credit, they concentrate almost entirely on explaining HOW to apply basic principles, citing benchmark examples which include the John Deere Construction & Forestry Technology Program, Radica Games Group, and Solectron Corporation.

Obviously, all organizations have boundaries and many of them are essential to achieving success. For example, non-negotiable values to which everyone involved is held accountable. Without appropriate behavior, there would be chaos. Also, there are limits on available resources which means that priorities must be set and then served. No organization can afford to be everything to everyone associated with it. Boundaries are inevitable. That said, Mankin and Cohen assert -- and I wholly agree -- that there is an interdependence of structure and relationships which can enable any organization (regardless of size or nature) to collaborate effectively, and do so "across time, distance, organization, and culture." The core concept of this book is a metaprinciple which is explained in Chapter One. With exquisite care, Mankin and Cohen use an especially apt metaphor -- jazz -- to illustrate how the metaprinciple provides the "theme" and the action framework (please see pages 5-8 and Chapters Seven and Eight) provides the "score." Extending the metaphor, Mankin and Cohen urge their reader to use the theme to improvise on the framework and create collaboration within her or his own organization and such efforts will "transcend all boundaries to produce deeply fulfilling performances."

Not all of those who read this book will be willing and able to make and then sustain the commitment required. It may be helpful to recall Henry Ford's assertion that, whether you think you can or think you can't, you're right.

5 out of 5 stars HOW TO MAKE COMPLEX COLLABORATION WORK........2005-07-04

Business is conducted across all types of boundaries through collaborative strategies and arrangements. These collaborative enterprises can be extremely complex. This book explores what these collaborations look like, the challenges they face, and how to make them work. Based on analysis of three case studies, the authors present an action framework to guide executives in building such collaborations. The challenge is to manage complexity so that it enhances and energizes the collaboration instead of destroying it. Success hinges upon the people and the nature and quality of their interrelationships and interactions, the key to which is structure: well-defined roles, expectations, responsibilities, decision-making processes, and the like. Structure offers a zone of stability within which complex collaborations can develop and successfully function. Three-quarters of the book presents and analyzes the cases, offing many insights. The action framework is formally presented in the last two chapters.

                              Book Description

Although Latin America had a substantial merchant fleet by the 1950s, at the end of the century most of the major shipping companies have disappeared from the continent. Continuing to grow through protectionist efforts during the 1960s and 1970s, the industry began to decline when container technology, requiring large capital investments, shifted competition to access capital. This book shows how technology undermined and finally shattered the nationalist efforts to create a significant Latin American merchant shipping industry. Written in a clear and concise style, it provides the first authoritative survey of Latin American shipping during the second half of the century. The book opens with a discussion of cargo preference--a form of protectionism--in Chile and shows how Latin American merchant fleets expanded under cargo preference. Most countries witnessed a dramatic expansion in their national fleets. In the 1970s, the impact of containers, a new technology, began to be felt. As the book shows, the large capital outlays needed to adopt containers undermined the foundations of Latin American shipping companies, and most of the merchant shipping companies in the region gradually collapsed. The book also examines the non-commercial role of merchant shipping, particularly in international clashes such as the Cuban Revolution.

From the supplier: An ethical dilemma arises when public relations professionals exhibit a partiality toward the concerns of their clients as compared to those of other persons and interests. However, the differentiated role of public relations practitioners allows them to be partial toward the interests of their clients to the point that this partiality is not in violation of the rights of others or is not a threat to the public interest. Therefore, they can be ethically partial toward client or management interests as long as they do not abdicate on their social duty of advancing the values of society. Therefore, a professional who is ethically partial toward a client or management is also acting on the interest of the society in general.

                                      Book Description

More than ten years after his first bestselling book, The E–Myth, changed the lives of hundreds of thousands of small business owners, Michael Gerber椮trepreneur, author, and speaker extraordinaire楩res the next salvo in his highly successful E–Myth Revolution. Drawing on lessons learned from working with more than 15,000 small, medium–sized, and very large organisations, Gerber has discovered the truth behind why management doesn't work栮d what to do about it. Unearthing the arbitrary origins of commonly held doctrines such as the omniscience of leader (Emperor) and the most widely embraced myth of all擨e E–Myth Manager offers a fresh, provocative alternative to management as we know it. It explores why every manager must take charge of his own life, reconcile his own personal vision with that of the organisation, and develop an entrepreneurial mind–set to achieve true success.

Great stuff and a must have - appears to be simplistic but after you really study Gerber's well articulated strategy carefully - it will then reveal its true value.

Michael Gerber does not put much credence in the oodles of management and leadership theory and teachings that fill today's bookstores, seminars, and classrooms - to include those principles embraced by the titans in the field. One of the main ideas put forth in his book is that a manager must be able to treat his organization/department as if it were his own company. While not a new idea, Michael does take it a bit further insisting that it is an absolute requirement that each person's role in the organization must fill his own personal vision. When this is the case, the manager can find true fulfillment in his work and achieve wonderful things in the process. If not, all the theory, training, etc are pure folly. There's lots of good stuff in this one. It's an easy read too. Michael unveils the e-myth philosophy and how it can be implemented by walking through the process with a manager of his own company.

It was 10+ years since reading the original. Now mid-career I was like the young exec who is the mythical "atlas shrugged".

Gerber's book let me know that vision was still important and that you can't sacrifice your own vision without the resulting burnout.

At a few junctures it gets a little mystic and so I just flip the page.

But as an engineer it's been a boon to my work morale and I've been cranking out the patents and ideas as fast as I can. My vision is to pursue my talents with a tad more caution and ownership.

1 out of 5 stars Not like the original.......2005-10-31

If you are looking for the original emyth book that is LOADED with earth shattering ideas about how small business owners should look at their business - this is NOT it.

A very dissappointing philosophical book that meanders around with little inspiring points.

The emyth original is at the top of the must read books for business owners and this one might be near the bottom. Not to say that there are not some bright spots, but they are few.

                                        Book Description

It is now possible to gain competitive advantages based on consolidated R/3 system implementations. One of the most important optimisation aspects is a more consistent process integration in order to bring about fast, secure and cost effective business processes. This approach inevitably leads to Workflow Management and for SAP users to SAP ® WebFlow ®. This book introduces the topic of Workflow Management, gives an overview of the technical possibilities of SAP ® WebFlow ® and allows the reader to assess SAP workflow project risks and costs/benefits based on real life examples. Check lists and technical hints not only aid the reader in evaluating potential projects but also in the management of real life workflow project engineering.
