About Research & Education Association
Research & Education Association (REA) is an organization of educators, scientists, and engineers specializing in various academic fields. Founded in 1959 with the purpose of disseminating the most recently developed scientific information to groups in industry, government, high schools, and universities, REA has since become a successful and highly respected publisher of study aids, test preps, handbooks, and reference works.
REA's Test Preparation series includes study guides for all academic levels in almost all disciplines. Research & Education Association publishes test preps for students who have not yet completed high school, as well as high school students preparing to enter college. Students from countries around the world seeking to attend college in the United States will find the assistance they need in REA's publications. For college students seeking advanced degrees, REA publishes test preps for many major graduate school admission examinations in a wide variety of disciplines, including engineering, law, and medicine. Students at every level, in every field, with every ambition can find what they are looking for among REA's publications.
While most test preparation books present practice tests that bear little resemblance to the actual exams, REA's series presents tests that accurately depict the official exams in both degree of difficulty and types of questions. REA's practice tests are always based upon the most recently administered exams, and include every type of question that can be expected on the actual exams.
REA's publications and educational materials are highly regarded and continually receive an unprecedented amount of praise from professionals, instructors, librarians, parents, and students. Our authors are as diverse as the fields represented in the books we publish. They are well-known in their respective disciplines and serve on the faculties of prestigious high schools, colleges, and universities throughout the United States and Canada.
Chapter 1: SCORING HIGH ON THE ACT ASSESSMENT
ABOUT OUR BOOK
This book has the tools to effectively prepare you for the ACT Assessment. It contains five full-length practice exams complete with answer keys and detailed explanations for each question, along with a topical review for each of the four individual tests that make up the ACT. All of the practice exams we provide are based on the latest ACT test administrations and contain every type of question that you can expect to encounter on the actual exam.
ABOUT THE ACT
Who Takes the ACT and What is It Used for?
The ACT is usually taken by high school juniors and seniors. The exam is used by college admissions officers as a way to fairly judge all the students who apply to their school. Because high schools across the United States use many different grading systems, ACT scores put everyone on more of an equal footing. Your ACT scores, along with other information provided by you and your high school, help colleges predict how well you will do at the college level.
If you don't do well on the ACT, don't panic! The exam can be taken over so that you can work on improving your scores. It's also not the be-all and end-all that you might think it is. Admissions officers use a number of criteria to judge applicants: Grade-point average, extracurricular activities, on-campus interviews, and the degree to which you've been taking challenging courses in high school are all factors that go into the mix. REA believes you have every reason to believe that, with enough of the right preparation, you can and should score well on the ACT. Nonetheless, you shouldn't think that not doing so will necessarily jeopardize your chances of attending the college of your choice. The very fact that you picked up this book, however, means that you're not one to leave much to chance. Having our test prep at your side as you approach test day will give you the extra shot of confidence we all sometimes need to climb the ladder of success.
Who Administers the ACT?
The ACT is developed and administered by ACT, Inc., and involves the assistance of educators throughout the country. The development process is designed and implemented to ensure that the content and difficulty level of the exam are appropriate.
When and Where is the ACT Given?
You should try to take the exam early in your junior or senior year so that you will have another opportunity to take it if you are not satisfied with your performance. Taking our practice exams will familiarize you with the types of questions and format of the ACT so that you do not have to go through the anxiety of learning about the ACT during the actual exam.
The ACT is usually administered five times a year throughout the country. It is given at hundreds of locations, including high schools. The usual testing day is Saturday, but the exam can be taken on an alternate day if a conflict, such as a religious obligation, exists.
To receive information on upcoming administrations of the ACT, consult the ACT Registration Bulletin, which can be obtained from your guidance counselor, or contact ACT, Inc., directly at:
ACT Registration
Phone: (319) 337-1270 (Weekdays 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ct)
Website: http://www.act.org
Online registration or registration by phone is recommended
To take the ACT, you must pay a registration fee. A fee waiver may be granted in certain situations. To find out if you qualify, ask your guidance counselor.
HOW TO USE THIS BOOK
What Do I Study First?
Begin your studies by first taking our written diagnostic exam. The tables that follow include an answer key to score your exam, and also explain what review material you need to study if you answer a question incorrectly.
After taking the written diagnostic exam, you may wish to continue your study by moving on to our Practice Exams I and II. Or, if you prefer, first study our reviews, which are designed to provide you with the information and strategies you need to do well on the ACT.
Complete your preparation by taking the remaining two practice exams. For the most benefit, be sure to simulate actual testi...
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2006-08-15
Helped my daughter become familiar with how the ACT is worded and what to expect on the exam. Eased some of her anxiety.
Horrible.......2006-07-22
Which is sad because the material is laid out great, but the amount of errors ruins it. There are typos everywhere, SIGNIFICANT typos, such as the wrong sign in an equation or missing punctuation in the answers of the grammar drills. If you do get the book, make sure you do the math for yourself, because you'll catch yourself correcting the book fairly often.
Very Worse Course For Time.......2005-04-06
This book of more than a thousand pages has every topic that could possibly be on the ACT. The topics are explained in a clear, concise manner. But there are so many topics that their explanations are almost too concise: Two or three sentences of explanations are given and a couple of examples. The format of the examples are in a No and Yes format for the English section. The drills in the English section and Science have good explanations with them. But in the Math section, in which work might be needed, there are no explanations, only answers. The Reading section has no explanation either. The diagnostic test and four other tests gives you great explanations for each topic, though.
Don't get me wrong, some topics are explained well because of the many sub-categories. But other topics are really sketchy on the details. Also, in the English section, the book expects you to memorize all the "by-the-book" terms, like superlative and present perfect. I had never even heard of those terms until I had taken a Spanish class. Moreover, other books might help you memorize things by acronyms but this book if just full of dry information.
If you have to take the ACT in a couple months or weeks, this is a very bad book for you. With all this info, you would need a year to get through it all. Moreover, there is so much stuff that you really don't need for the ACT. This book gives you years worth of information. You can really tell from the science topics of astrology, meteorology, physics, etc.
At least now I understand the elusive diffence between who and whom.

Book Description
The PMI Project Management Fact Book Second Edition is destined to be a benchmark resource for both the project management community and those interested in learning more about the profession. High school and college students, in particular, will find it to be an invaluable overview of a career that can offer excellent salaries and challenging opportunities around the world. Here are just a few of the fascinating facts you'll discover about the project management profession:
-More than sixteen and one-half million people can't be wrong. The Project Management Institute (PMI®) estimates that four-and-a half million people in the United Statesrepresenting about 3.3 percent of the employed U.S. workforcemay regard project management as their profession of choice. The size of the profession in the rest of the world may be more than 12 million.
-Projects are big business. PMI estimates that the U.S. public and private sectors spend some US$2.3 trillion on projects every year, an amount equivalent to one-quarter of the nation's gross domestic product. Extrapolating U.S. data, PMI estimates that the world spends nearly US$10 trillion of the world's US$40.7 trillion gross product on projects of all kinds.
-The project management profession is experiencing explosive growth. Memberhip in (PMI) has grown to more than 95,000 members. In addition, more than 46,000 individuals are now certified as Project Management Professionals (PMP®).
Customer Reviews:
Guidebook for PMI members and those considering membership.......2002-08-19
This is a general book on project management that frames project management as a practice and makes a case for the Project Management Institute's approach and its Project Management Professional certification.
Sections 1 and 2 frame project management by giving a brief history of the profession, defining project management as a practice, and discussing knowledge areas and providing statistics based on PMI's research of project costs, scope and challenges.
Specifics about the profession of project management are given in Section 3, including job descriptions, ethics, credentials and typical compensation. This is followed by a discussion of the PM environment in Section 4, which covers organizational issues such as the ratio of project managers to the total number of employees, globalization of project management and certifications. In this section the case is made for the PMP certification, which is valid in the US, but the conclusion made of the global acceptance of this certification, in my opinion, misses the point that PRINCE2 is more accepted in the UK and former Commonwealth countries. Section 5 is devoted to the Project Management Institute, its organizational structure, standards and standards making groups, membership benefits and its influence.
For PMI members, PMPs or those considering joining PMI and/or pursuing the PMP certification this is an excellent book because it describes the PM profession from PMI's point of view, gives a wealth of supporting statistics and facts, and provides insights into PMI.

Book Description
Gianni Vaggi and Peter Groenewegen present a brief history of economic thought in two parts dealing respectively with classical economics and modern developments. Each of the 18 chapters looks at the contributions of a major economist, from Thomas Mun in the early 17th century through to Keynes and Harrod and the foundations of modern macroeconomics in the 20th century. Suggestions are given for further reading on each economist featured.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent overall, but the essay on Keynes is very poor.......2005-07-08
Vaggi and Groenewegen do an excellent job overall in this book of 34 essays that covers the economic theories and applied policies of economists , spanning a three hundred and fifty year time period, like Locke,Petty,Cantillion,Hume,Smith,Say,and Malthus to Keynes,Harrod,Kalecki, and Milton Friedman. Each essay devotes about ten pages to each of the economists covered. The different schools of economic thought such as Mercantilism,Classical economics,Marxist economics,Neoclassical(marginalism)economics,Keynesianism and Monetarism are covered. It is in essay 31,on John Maynard Keynes, that Vaggi and Groenewegen go badly astray. The authors give the Cambridge Circus(Joan Robinson,Austin Robinson and Richard Kahn) interpretation of the General Theory. The treatment of Keynes's Treatise on Money(TM)makes no sense. On p.299,they assert that Keynes's initial, temporary assumption of constant or fixed output in the TM amounted to an assumption that Say's Law was ,in general, sound and valid.Keynes's analysis showed that a fall in consumption spending and a rise in the amount of savings would NOT(contrary to the claims of the two authors) lead to a decrease in the rate of interest(bank) rate sufficient to increase the amount of investment spending by precisely the amount of the fall in consumption spending so as to keep the economy on the static and dynamic production possibilities. This follows from the fact that a private commercial banking system's goals of profit maximizing and/or sales maximization behavior will result in a bank rate which does not equilibrate savings with investment at a full employment level of output.Keynes showed that, starting from full employment at constant output, adjustments in the bank rate will not return an economy to optimum after it has been subjected to a business cycle shock. The treatment of the GT is just as poor. The authors claim (p.307)that the essential chapters of the GT are 1-3,5,8-11,13,18,and 24 is incorrect. The really crucial chapters are 19,20,21,and the appendix to chapter 19.It is in these chapters that Keynes derives his major result about involuntary unemployment and unemployment equilibrium-w/p=mpl/(mpc+mpi).Unless mpc+mpi=1 it is impossible for labor to cut its money wage ,w, so as to lower the real wage,w/p,while maintaining equality with mpl,the marginal product of labor. The claims that Tarshis's D-Z analysis is what Keynes meant(p.306 )and that "Keynes's ...vision of the aggregate supply function was never illustrated in a graph..."(p.305)means that the authors lack the necessary mathematical training in differential and integral calculus needed to follow the mathematical steps provided by Keynes on pp.281-286 and pp.304-306 of the GT.No diagram is needed.
Book Description
In The Philosophic Consultant, acclaimed business consultant, philosopher, and author Peter Koestenbaum links deep insights of philosophy with practical business issues. Throughout this one-of-a-kind resource, Koestenbaum shows consultants and human resource practitioners how they can foster philosophical leadership within their organizations to positively affect the business environment. The book promises tangible results— credibility, trust, and thoughtful attention— and demonstrates how to apply philosophy, share knowledge with others, and use this newfound thoughtfulness to achieve bottom-line results.
Customer Reviews:
Where is Philosophy?.......2004-01-31
Let me start by reminding you of what philosopher Michael Oakeshott (1933, p. 1) has said:
`We seek in philosophy what wiser men would look for in a gospel, ...', but `... philosophy is without any direct bearing upon the practical conduct of life, and that it has certainly never offered its true followers anything which could be mistaken for a gospel'. ... `Nearly always a philosopher hides a secret ambition, ... , and often it is that of the preacher. But we must learn not to follow the philosophers upon these holiday excursions'.
"Experience and its Modes", Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.
If so, we should not follow Koestenbaum upon the leadership excursion in this text, or if one chooses to do so, I suggest with caution!
This is because the treatment of philosophy is poor, despite the fact that the approach to use philosophy in business is sound in itself, an approach that I personally favour and use - this induced me to purchase the text in the first place. This poor treatment is not only in terms of the philosophers cited and the references used, but more importantly in terms of the ideas used. The latter seem to be taken simply and purely for granted, especially when a number of concepts that include knowledge, reality, self, other, language, experience - all being management concerns - are high on the agenda of philosophical debate. For instance, the distinction between the `inner universe' and the `outer universe' after Plato (p. 31) leaving aside cases when such a distinction does not hold - with language and Wittgenstein for example. This treatment seems to connote a general strategy at play in this text, that of keeping language simple to make the text easily accessible to busy managers and business-people.
Yet making language simple is one thing. Deciding upon contested concepts and ideas on behalf of others when such authority has not been given is to restrict choice. It is to fix concepts in the definitional form "X is ...". This seems to be for a clear purpose. To empower the (registered!) Leadership Diamond Model with the expectation that it `will give individuals and organisations credibility in what they do and speed in getting to the high-leverage issues for effectively managing today's two bid business topics: "change" and "innovation"' (p. 7).
Such a claim is however dogmatic, akin to guru preaching, to a gospel that stresses one side of the coin. It tends to undermine plural readings of issues and concerns. Fundamentally, it cannot conceive of the idea that the same premises from where Leadership Diamond Model is derived and which are expected to lead to business success, that is a changed self, can also be the cause for disillusion, intra-organisational conflict, and even bankruptcy. Note that this is not my gospel, but the simple description of my experience!
Thus, only in the effort to understand such plural and varied events in a plural manner, as an approach to questioning and suggesting different answers to organisational problems and issues, can philosophy be of help to business and management (in making choice possible). Otherwise, philosophy ceases to exist.
Overall, despite the interesting approach that seeks to use a philosophical premise from where business and management issues can be tackled, this text, in tending to transform hotly debated issues and concepts into philosophical lessons that have presumably been settled once and for all, undermines the very purpose of philosophy.
Outstanding.......2002-11-06
Peter Koestenbaum has integrated centuries of thought and knowledge into a coherent easily understandable and practical guide on how to lead your life, manage your business and consult to leaders. The elegance of his work is that he integrates much of mankind's wisdom with his own business experience in a manner that is easily applied in a community or organizational environment. Peter Koestenbaum and The Philosophic Consultant are gifts to you and your clients--take the time to read and reflect on the wisdom that he provides so freely to each one of us.

On the surface it would appear that an engineer would need to know little about marketing, or even communicate with marketing professionals, to be successful. However, an engineer that understands and anticipates market conditions can design products that meet the exact needs of a market at the right time.

Book Description
This work offers a firm theoretical foundation for discussing the self-employed, their role over time, and the formulation of policy towards them. It calls into question the theoretical coherence of the traditional approaches and views the current debate over the recent alleged growth in self-employment in the context of the casualization and externalization of employment relationships--such as part-time, temporary, home, leased, and subcontracted labor. And it shows the chief source of data on the self-employed, collected by the Bureau of the Census, to be seriously flawed and the generally accepted notion of the self-employed to be grossly overinclusive.
Book Description
Something radical is happening to corporate organizational structures, something subtle yet far-reaching in impact. It is the rapid emergence of offshore outsourcing as a corporate strategy. Cost reduction, productivity improvement, and cheaper labor - these are the promises of offshore outsourcing. This book reveals how GE, American Express, Dell, British Airways, Delta Air Lines, BellSouth, British Telecom, and numerous other companies are successfully using offshore outsourcing to reduce costs associated with IT, customer care, finance and accounting, human resources, and transaction processing.
Offshore Outsourcing: Business Models, ROI, and Best Practices is a comprehensive guide to the real-world application of offshore outsourcing across all industries. Authors Marcia Robinson and Dr. Ravi Kalakota give you an in-depth analysis of offshore outsourcing. They discuss what is behind this trend, how it is paying off, and, most importantly, provide you with a step-by-step guide on how you can implement your own offshore strategy.
Based on extensive research and interviews, this book offers insight into how managers of leading firms are implementing offshore outsourcing. You will find plenty of practical tips and tools to apply offshore outsourcing in a wide variety of business environments.
Offshore Outsourcing is organized in three easy-to-read sections:
Part One introduces the value proposition of offshore outsourcing, including fundamental concepts, the different business models, and the business process landscape.
Part Two examines the specifics of the processes being offshored today, namely information technology, customer care, finance and accounting, human resources, and transaction processing.
Part Three describes the major activities of the offshore strategy, vendor sourcing, and country selection.
Robinson and Kalakota include multiple best-practice case studies to illustrate how firms are executing their offshore strategies. The authors map out key steps to help you make the right choices with your own offshore projects and reveal the benefits, costs, and risks of offshore outsourcing. Finally, it's your choice. Offshore outsourcing can be a haphazard affair that creates anxiety among employees and fails to deliver bottom-line results. Or, with this book at your side, it can help you create a more focused, streamlined, and competitive organization.
Customer Reviews:
If you have never outsourced offshore, Part II, Offshore Outsourcing best practicies, other parts are light.......2006-04-17
If you are not familiar with offshore outsourcing at all, then Offshore Outsourcing by Marcia Robinson and Ravi Kalakota provides a very detailed view of both business models that can be used for working offshore and reviewing what could possibly offshored, including many areas not normally described (for example: telemarketing for initial sales leads.).
Starting off in Chapter 2, various business models are defined. While none of the models is new, it is a good compilation. It also shows that you can take pieces from the various models and form your own. A staff augmentation onsite model is not listed, but it could be considered similar to the BOT (Build Operate and Transfer) model defined in the book. A staff augmentation model means that you do not necessarily have to transfer operations to the client from the outsourcing firm. It may never make sense for the client to take over the operations themselves. Chapter 2 also reviews different revenue models at the end of the chapter. It would have been good to see how the business models cross with the revenue models; which revenue models work best with what business model, etc.
The bulk of the discussion in this book defines the various types of activities that can be undertaken offshore. At a high-level, five areas are defined
1. IT
2. Customer Care
3. Finance and accounting
4. human resources
5. transaction processing
A chapter is dedicated to each of the five areas. I think for some people, some of the types of activities that are discussed will be surprising. For example all of the activities listed under marketing: direct mail marketing, campaigns, telemarketing, telesales, lead qualification, lead tracking and customer surveys. Many marketing consulting firms will tell you many of these areas can't be done offshore, but clearly they are.
Good for review is that no matter what you outsource, each item needs to be evaluated. When evaluating whether or not to offshore any of these processes, need to answer these questions:
1. Can you offshore without losing your competitive advantage?
2. If you offshore it, can you receive incremental savings from it?
3. Can you offshore it without losing control of it?
One item is given as an example for back-office transaction processing starting on page 70. They give an example of Dispute resolution which is done at the FCE (Financial Center East) of American Express established in India in 1994. Now dispute resolution is very labor intensive, which is true, and it requires customer interaction. They refer to it as an area where FCE shines because of low-cost, high quality staff. They state that the FCE has reduced the turn around time in the dispute resolution process, but they do not say why? Are they doing things such as: Part of the work is done during the day in the US or Europe, then other items are done overnight in India, or have they thought up new ways on their own (were they given that autonomy) to change the dispute resolution process? Since 58% (stated on pg 69) of what they do process is for Japan and Asia Pacific, is there something specific about the laws for dispute resolution in those areas that they can be resolved faster. It would be good to see the average times for dispute resolution within the US center, the UK center and the FCE. But then we would also need to know, is the process exactly the same, can it be the same because of the laws, and therefore are we comparing apples to apples or apples to oranges. I would have liked them to delve in to one or two of these scenarios much more closely. Right now we only get a top view of everything that has taken place, what people have offshored, how it has worked, but little details on why it failed, or why it worked, which would be necessary to determine best practices and to not get a false sense that everything will be okay going offshore. This would be necessary data for AmEx to determine are they really getting an advantage with the FCE, or are there outside factors which influence the results.
During the discussion on IT Outsourcing, there was one thing I always have to laugh about. Companies always talk about how they undertook a large vendor selection process, and then chose Wipro, Infosys, Tata, Satym, etc., and usually more than one. I have to wonder why they bother with the selection process, why they waste the money? They chose the top Indian outsourcing firms; they could have saved time and money and put those companies on their initial short list. Do they really get any benefit by going through the entire selection process that make up for the time and money that it takes?
The third section of the book is dedicated to helping a company define their offshore strategy. Initially the book implies that you have to start out knowing exactly what you want to offshore, but then they do go deeper in to it. Step 1 includes: Analyze your goals and set your strategy looks at how to determine what to offshore and what to keep in-house. The author's do make a blanket statement that if you are in the pharmaceutical business you shouldn't offshore your R&D, however, there are successful cases of pharma companies offshoring just this type of work and making specific deals to do this.
The vendor selection and location selection chapters are fairly standard. The vendor selection process is one that is used for selecting any type of outsourcing firm. It does include a section on the best Indian outsourcing firms. The location selection chapter reviews common criteria for evaluating different countries and parts of the world.
Offshoring Outsourcing is a great book for those not familiar with all of the different types of work that can be offshored. The best part of the book is Part II which is called Offshore Outsourcing Best Practices, but really describes in detail, based on the five high-level outsourcing categories, what can be offshored. For many of the items, examples of actual projects and situations are included. If someone is not familiar with the different areas that can be done offshored, this is the book for them. The sections on setting your offshore strategy and how do you actually get started are lighter. They will be a help to a company which has not started, but other reference sources will still be needed.
Know how about outsourcing!.......2005-10-14
Found cheapest copy here. Good buy as always. Gives you a basic round down of outsourcing.
I actually read this book :-).......2005-10-13
After reading some of the caustic comments posted regarding this book, I thought it might be useful for people to hear a different viewpoint.
I read this book after borrowing it from a co-worker to get an overview of offshore outsourcing. After attending a lot of internal meetings where managers throw out various buzzwords like BPO, ITO, near-shoring, offshoring etc. I needed a primer that had a lot of examples and case studies.
I found the book useful in terms of providing a basic foundation in terms of what was going on. Was the book perfect, no. Was the book upto date in 2005, no. Did it provide a basic education and overview, yes. Did it provide some guidelines if you were to implement outsourcing, yes.
Propaganda.......2005-10-11
This Book is a Propaganda for projecting outsourcing the best option for big businesses and India is the best place for this business.
Better Information out there...Recommend You Look at Other Outsourcing Titles.......2005-10-03
At best, this is a compilation and one-off set of the business journal articles of two & three YEARS ago.
Perhaps in 2003 it was the book to get - but now there are too many other great outsourcing books to choose from.
Like other critical buyers have said, "Not worth the cover price". You'll be disappointed you didn't expand your search for more complete and current outsourcing selections.
