          Book Description

Environmental values and concerns are meant to be reflected through environmental policy, which is then integrated into mainstream economic and social policy and serves to govern society and the economy. Yet effective environmental policy integration (EPI) has proven to be very difficult in actual practice and it remains largely an elusive aspiration. This is particularly the case in core economic sectors such as energy and agriculture, which have enormous environmental impacts but are also sectors in which other priorities typically override environmental concerns in policy creation. This groundbreaking volume presents the first ever detailed examination of EPI at the national policy level, focusing on the key sectors of energy and agriculture within Sweden, a country that is widely recognized as a leader in Europe and worldwide. In doing so, the authors unpack EPI, look at what it means in policy formation and examine how environmental priorities are treated in relation to other political priorities.

The final section of the book lays out the major findings and presents key lessons for international application including institutional recommendations on how to enhance the potential for EPI. Most fundamentally, the book answers the questions of what works and why for EPI, and how it can be achieved in practice across sectors. The result is a rich and indispensable guide for all those involved in policy formation in governments, NGOs and business and industry as well as environmental management professionals, and researchers and higher level students studying environmental policy.

              Book Description

The practice of research has long become more a business activity than scholarly pursuit. It takes particular know-how, not merely to secure financial backing and thence deliver to order, but to manage and keep control of an entire intervening research operation. Yet these are activities academics are not normally trained in or formally prepared for. This collection breaks new ground in its offer of frank commentary on aspects of the research process - as supplied by experienced academics together with a senior representative of one key funding agency - based on first-hand experience and observation of the management of social science projects from within Britain/the EU.The collection is also conspicuous for the variety of research projects covered. Most contributors are reporting with reference to a particular case-study experience. But these range from the most localised to the most multi-national; from the most specialised to the most multi-disciplinary undertakings.

                Book Description

The exchange rate is a crucial variable linking a nation's domestic economy to the international market. Thus choice of an exchange rate regime is a central component in the economic policy of developing countries and a key factor affecting economic growth.

Historically, most developing nations have employed strict exchange rate controls and heavy protection of domestic industry-policies now thought to be at odds with sustainable and desirable rates of economic growth. By contrast, many East Asian nations maintained exchange rate regimes designed to achieve an attractive climate for exports and an "outer-oriented" development strategy. The result has been rapid and consistent economic growth over the past few decades.

Changes in Exchange Rates in Rapidly Developing Countries explores the impact of such diverse exchange control regimes in both historical and regional contexts, focusing particular attention on East Asia. This comprehensive, carefully researched volume will surely become a standard reference for scholars and policymakers.

                          Book Description

Unlike any other book on the market, Construction Specifications: Principles and Applications addresses specification writing as a valuable tool that can play a critical role in managing professional risk, enhancing the value of an architect's or engineer's instruments of service, and increasing the profitability of facilities in both public and private sectors. This book will guide users through the creation and implementation of construction specifications and related construction administration documents, detailing the requirements for effective, successful specifications. Coverage includes topics never before explored in other specification-focused publications, such as standards of professional care, risk management, liability reform for architects and engineers, and the very latest formats of the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), including MasterFormat™ 2004 Edition, SectionFormat, and UniFormat. Given the growing complexity of the construction industry, the demand for specifications that can serve as management assets and risk prevention resources is at an all-time high, and professionals armed with the knowledge that this book provides will be best prepared to face these new challenges.

                                Book Description

This absorbing narrative follows the craft community of French chocolatiers--members of a tiny group experiencing intensive international competition--as they struggle to ensure the survival of their businesses. Susan J. Terrio moves easily among ethnography, history, theory, and vignette, telling a story that challenges conventional views of craft work, associational forms, and training models in late capitalism. She enters the world of Parisian craft leaders and local artisanal families there and in southwest France to relate how they work and how they confront the representatives and structures of power, from taste makers, CEOs, and advertising executives to the technocrats of Paris and Brussels.
Looking at craft culture and community from a cross-disciplinary perspective, Terrio finds that the chocolatiers affirm their collective identity and their place in the present by commemorating selectively their role in history. In addition to joining a distinguished tradition of American anthropological writing on the role of food, her study of the social production of taste in the invention of vintage, grand cru chocolates lends specificity and weight to theories of consumption by Pierre Bourdieu and others. The book will appeal to anthropologists, cultural studies scholars, and anyone curious about life in contemporary France.

                                  Book Description

This book will show you how to sell your ideas by applying principles from advertising, training, and psychology. While traditional teaching focuses on intellectual knowledge and skills, the advertraining approach adds emotion. Advertraining ensures that students will not only understand what you teach, they will like it. This book will inspire your creativity by showing how advertising campaigns apply to classes, e-learning, and communication.

1 out of 5 stars Not advertising, not training --Just self-promotional fluff .......2005-05-22

I'm a retired CEO and am about to teach an adult ed course. I picked up several teaching/training books for insight. Unfortunately, this one was a loser...

This is a simplistic book with obvious, common-sense "principles" ("Be Confident", "Make a Good First Impression"). The format of each chapter is to describe common TV advertising campaigns that are supposedly connected with a certain "principle"; then to end abruptly by throwing the question of how the principle correlates to training back at the reader. For example, in the chapter "Build on the Brand", the author rambles about company culture at Disney, then suddenly ends with nothing but his own self-promotion:

"...before starting any training program, developers should become familiar with the brand identity, and do everything they can to work it into the training. How? Well, that's where your creativity and experience come in. Or, if you're too busy, you can hire us."

This book states that it is targeted to training professionals, high school/college teachers, and marketing professionals, however this author seems to have no insight about any of the above.

A much better choice is Training for Dummies - which tackles the subject seriously, including how to measure training's effectiveness - something never even mentioned in this one.

                                        Book Description

Why has the drastic assault on U.S. workers' economic well-being represented by plant closings not spurred them to greater political and trade union militancy? The answers lie in the myths and power structure of our society's legal and business institutions. By comparing worker experiences in Youngstown, Ohio, where plant closings and layoffs are not regulated, and Longwy, France, where legislation had been enacted, Rothstein gauges the markedly different effects.

                                          Book Description

Techniques of the pros for getting fast, free, and valuable data using the SEC's Web-based EDGAR system

More than one million investors each week rely on the SEC's EDGAR (Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval) system to learn what is really going on inside publicly traded companies. But because the dense boilerplate and legalese is often more arcane and confusing than informative, many come away with little useful information.

EDGAR: The Investor's Guide to Making Better Investments shows investors how to quickly find--and interpret--the data they need. Explaining how to look for essential facts in obtuse SEC filings, this do-it-yourself investor's handbook discusses:

                                          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very good book on security controls.......2004-07-02

Checklists, though mundane, are a key component of many jobs. They help ensure that key issues aren't overlooked, and they serve as guideposts for anyone auditing the work. This book provides technology managers with a very good preparatory set of details and checklists for their e-commerce infrastructure. The book can also show a corporate auditor what to look for to ensure that appropriate controls are in place.

Throughout its 6 chapters and 225 pages, the book offers a detailed, progressive, and structured approach for performing such audits. The book addresses technology-related issues but doesn't require the auditor to be expert in them. Among topics discussed are physical security, authentication, and passwords; checklists ensure that these features are deployed or configured correctly.

For ensuring that file servers and other elements of the e-commerce infrastructure are protected, this book is an excellent choice.

5 out of 5 stars An Invaluable E-Commerce Audit Guide.......2004-03-12

While many approach the subject of e-commerce control and security from a purely pedagogical, 'those who can't do, teach' perspective, Gordon Smith draws upon his considerable experience in the trenches to pen this logical step-by-step, risk-based approach to the subject. Moreover, the book is written in an easy, conversational style that is easily comprehended by even neophyte auditors, and its packed with audit work programs and checklists that permit practitioners to roll up their sleeves and get down to work immediately. One feature of this book I found particularly enlightening was Mr. Smith's sensible inclusion of supporting operating system and data base-related risks and controls as they relate to the overall e-commerce control environement. Too often these extremely important controls are deleted from scope or not considered at all in favor of engagement cost and time constraints. Experience proves that a partially secured environement is no better than one that is totally unsecured. Having contracted and worked with Mr. Smith and his CanAudit associates in the past, and having personally witnessed his team breaking into systems heretofore considered inpenetrable, I place a great deal of credence in his opinions on the subject of system security, e-commerce-related or otherwise. This book is a must read for anyone interested in the subject of e-commerce security and an invaluable reference tool for the professional IT Auditing practitioner.
