As practical as it is insightful . . . for teacher trainers and for teachers at all levels.

The extraordinary challenges that await all new teachers at the start of their teaching careers become even more complex when the new teachers are young, white, and female. Close to 80% of all new teachers entering the field match that demographic, and those are the teachers most often assigned to urban classrooms with high concentrations of at-risk students. Vulnerable to challenges based on age, power, experience, authority, race, class, and gender, those new teachers are the ones that A Classroom of Her Own follows, observing their on-the-job struggles and achievements as they develop confidence and competence in instructional, professional, and cultural realms. Chapters cover:

Offering description and prescription, observation and advice, real-life experiences and tips for success from the new teachers themselves, this wonderful new resource on teacher preparation, induction, and retention should be essential reading for all teacher trainers, mentors, supervisors, staff developers, principals, and parent-community groups.

      Book Description

How did Microsoft decide what technologies to use when it created Windows95? According to this groundbreaking new book, it is technology integration-the process of choosing from a rich palette of technologies those that will make a product work seamlessly and reliably-that is a critical element to launching successful new products. The result of a six-year study of the major players in the computer industry-including Intel, IBM, Microsoft, Netscape, Silicon Graphics, Sun Microsystems, and Toshiba-the book illustrates the process of technology integration at the managerial and strategic levels and reveals the significant evolution in the structure of research and development in the modern corporation. Iansiti demonstrates convincingly that the ability to leverage new science and technology effectively is inextricably linked to the firm's ability to imagine how a multitude of emerging technological possibilities can be used to define a product that makes business sense. Technology Integration challenges the way traditional R&D organizations should work and provides a new and relevant framework for actively managing the space between the creation and the application of technology. The Management of Innovation and Change Series.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Its all about the Domain/Context.......2007-06-12

This book is great at covering a number of topics:

      1) An overview of the current state of Research and Development and how it works
      2) Backing up what it says about R&D with interviews into some of the big players in the IT industry
      3) Giving a functional solution to how you should integrate teams and efforts

I would say my favorite take away from this book is the separation of knowledge into two types: Domain and Context. I think the book should have elaborated more on this subject.

For other readers who have read The Keystone Advantage, this book is written in different style. There are numerous references to regression analysis and altogether has a research feel to it.

5 out of 5 stars Very good. Concepts on integration are compelling........1999-06-11

This book highlights several key concepts on successful and unsuccessful approaches to integrating product features in the high tech arena. Despite the fact that some of the statistical analysis was over my head, I found the book readable and insightful. The depth of research is impressive. I recommend this book to anyone in the software or hardware industry.

4 out of 5 stars A great book for people working in high-tech.......1998-10-10

This book was handed to me by the president of our company about five months ago, with the instructions, "Read this. I think it will change the way we build software." Turns out he was right.

The basic tenet of this book is that, in a rapidly changing and uncertain environment, companies must delay basic technology decisions as long as possible in order to best understand the context in which their product will be used. Changes in context can (i.e., new technologies, changing market requirements, competitive products) can take a product with killer potential and turn it into a market flop within weeks. This applies to manufacturing and system design as well as my industry, software, and was something that we ourselves had experienced.

Iansiti's writing style is fairly dry, and the exhaustive statistical analysis of his research can be, well, exhausting. I found myself skimming the middle of almost every chapter while he proved his points, so I could get to the good stuff: the case studies. Iansiti had access to Microsoft, Netscape, and Silicon Graphics, among other notable names, and his studies of successful and unsuccessful approaches to technology integration vividly illustrated the effect that a flexible decision-making process can have on a company's success, both in individual projects and in the market as a whole.

I used the basic principles Iansiti put forth and the case studies that he used to support them as a basis for redesigning my company's entire development process. We now have reduced the time-to-market for new features from over six months to less than two, and we are finding that our clients are happier and our products are seeing more success in the market as a result.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is scrambling to keep up with today's rapidly changing high-tech environment. It will make you take a hard look at the way you do business.

                Book Description

In today's complex, dynamic competitive landscape, management of technology can mean the difference between success and failure. Managers and researchers alike need effective ways to conceptualize and develop technology strategies. Richard Goodman and Michael Lawless provide tools needed to integrate firms' technology capabilities with their competitive direction. Technology and Strategy presents models that help put technology and its market impacts into perspective. It addresses the broad questions of how technology and markets evolve, how technology can re-order the "rules" of competition, and how it can shift the balance of individual firms' competitive advantage. It also blends topics currently capturing attention in business circles--such as Total Quality Management and the resource-based view of the firm--into a clear view of technology management programs. Technology and Strategy also describes methods to develop specific strategies to cope with challenges facing executives--like evaluating promising, but untried, new technologies. Using actual case studies from the electronics and bio-tech industries, Goodman and Lawless demonstrate the use of new techniques to formulate strategy, including Technology Mapping and the Innovation Audit. Both were created to help executives choose the approach to technology best suited to their firms' particular capabilities. Offering clear, practical guidance through a complex, fast-changing world of competition, this new analysis of technology and strategy is a valuable guide for general managers, RandD and manufacturing managers, strategic planners, and academics.

                Book Description

This textbook provides an introduction to the social and policy issues which have arisen as a result of information technology. Whilst it assumes a modest familiarity with computers, its aim is to provide a guide to the issues suitable for undergraduates. In doing so, the author prompts the students to consider questions such as: * How do morality and the law relate to each other? * What sould be covered in a professional Code of Conduct for Information Technology professionals? * What are the ethical issues relating to copying software? * Is electronic monitoring of employees wrong? * What are the moral codes of cyberspace? Throughout, the book shows how in many ways the technological development is outpacing the ability of our legal systems to keep up, and how different paradigms applied to ethical questions may often offer conflicting conclusions. As a result students will find this to be a thought-provoking and valuable survey of the new and difficult ethical questions that the Internet, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality have created.

3 out of 5 stars A myriad of topics each discussed briefly.......2000-02-20

Excellent chapters covering morality, law, ethics, professional codes, and intellectual property rights. Provides a basic introduction to many topics that stimulate further study, research, and discussion. Discussion of social issues is limited. The weaker chapters are the modern areas of the information age such as cyberspace, the internet, email, privacy, security, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality.

This comprehensive overview of the history of computing and its industry, and of commercial applications of the computer also outlines the history of how computing operations were managed within American companies. Based on extensive research in the contemporary business literature, this work is one of the few which looks at computing as business history, and it is the first to look at the broad scope of computing from the perspective of the business historian. The work is also directed at business managers to help them appreciate and understand the uses of the computer in their firms.

4 out of 5 stars The better essays.......2006-03-17

This book helps you to get good personal essays for business school. If you are looking for a guide, it will be useful. However it takes lots of time to complete this book because it's not a small pocket book which you can finish in a couple of days because of many advices and themes

4 out of 5 stars Quick and to the point.......2001-05-08

While not as good as Montauk's "How to Get Into the Top MBA Programs," this book is much shorter (1/3 the size) and may be better if you're on a tight deadline. Found that the essays provided some good guidelines. Helped me get into UCLA, so it was definitely worth the read.

1 out of 5 stars Perhaps useful to quell anxiety, but it's not the best..........2000-08-27

                  resource.

The point of writing the application essays is to emphasize your candidacy while presenting yourself as unique "fish" among the "school" of applicants. While the examples and critiques are mildly interesting, they don't do that much to help you be yourself.

A better, and more holistic analysis of positioning your entire application is presented in the Richard Montauk book, "How to Get Into the Top MBA Programs."

If you're interested purely in the essay portion, the Harry Bauld "On Writing the College Application Essay" is much better because it adds a human (and humor) element to writing. (Don't be misled by the undergraduate flair: Harry Haggard and Sarah Bleary review B-school applications, too!)

                  1 out of 5 stars Useless!.......2000-06-03

These essays are outdated, answer irrelevant questions and are entirely too long. They are good only to read and say - "I can do better than that." Besides, reading other people's essays is not as useful as a good book full of advice on which topics to cover and how to write. Save your money.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book to get you started!.......1999-04-13

As someone who works privately with students, helping them with admissions essays for MBA programs, I highly recommend this book. When students call me in regard to assistance with their essays, I recommend that they first buy this book as a means to get started. The guidelines and essays have helped my clients not only to gather their thoughts, but also to organize and write them into interesting and creative essays. By the time they come to me for feedback and editing, they are well along the way to getting into the MBA program of their choice.

This book tells you the basics of what colleges want in an essay, and goes into a lot of detail for all the tips. It also tells about a lot of excercises to help you write in general, which a mediocre writer might find useful. The 50 sample essays are usually from students who got into some of the top schools, such as Cornell. Some of them are really good, but a lot of them aren't (this might raise your confidence). It has some of the essays in the back graded by admissions officers with a few lines of comment. Basically, this is a good book to get, but 90% of it is available for free on the essayedge editing website. I see no reason to pay for it if they make it available for free.

As a college applicant in a foreign country, I had no idea of what American colleges wanted in an essay. I had bought one book previously, but it contained hazy advice and poor sample essays (also lacking commentry). These essays are brilliant, and well analysed. It helped me, and I hear of many advisors who use only this book to give students an idea as to what to write. BUY IT!!

                        Book Description

How do science and politics interact in the definition of work- related injury and disease? How is worker safety affected by the overall power relations within society? The world today faces bewildering new choices about technology use, the organization of work, and methods of production. Far from taking place in a vacuum, these choices have life-and-death implications for working people and communities. This book integrates theory, data, and case examples to analyze workplace health and safety battles and the roles of such key players as labor, public health professionals, management, regulatory bodies, and the state. The book examines the point of production--where raw materials are fashioned into products--situating issues of occupational and environmental health within their political, economic, and social context. Providing an alternative to classical economic explanations, the authors also take a fresh new look at the point of production. They critically explore the rationale that guides industrial decision making, and propose ways to ameliorate its human costs.

Questions on the business value of information technology (IT), which have been raised by managers and researchers for the last decade, are not settled yet. Firms invest in IT to improve their business performance. However, some firms fail to improve their business performance while others succeed. The overall value of IT varies enormously from firm to firm. Computerization does not automatically create business value, but it is one essential component that should be coupled with organizational changes such as new strategies, new business processes, and new organizational structure. Creating Business Value with Information Technology: Challenges and Solutions aims to solicit the studies that yield significant new insights into the business value of IT.
