      I expected more from the text, based on the title. The material seems to reflect the job market of 10 years ago - little reference to what's happening in the industry today that job seekers need to know. The text places heavy emphasis on the self-concept and values which are important, but skills the person has and how they relate to positions in the workplace are of utmost importance. An individual may have interest in a career field, but it could be one that's fading not emerging. I was expecting a book that would allow the reader to insert new ideas and new strategies right into a job search. The book may suffice as a supplemental reading, but not as a tutorial on establishing a career and finding a job. It lacks vision. I felt it was analog thinking in a digital world.

                    4 out of 5 stars An Up-to-date Book on Strategic Management.......2001-03-04

                    As commented by other reviewers, the book is indeed wordy. However, its usefulness and value lies in the illustrative examples and Illustration Capsules. The basic principles of strategic management may be simple but its intrepretation and application in different circumstances make strategic management a critical thinking topic. This accounts to a good extent for the length of the book as Thompson & Strickland have included in the book numerous illustrative examples on the application of the concepts of strategic management in practical situations. The 12th edition also introduced two whole new chapters which addresses globalisation and the internet world. Further, nearly all the case studies in the book have been either replaced or up-dated. In fact, the 'up-to-dating' of the book, barely 2 years after the 11th edition hit the market clearly shows the changes in the business world which has merited the issue of the 12th edition. What would have been good would be chapter on Strategies in Managing Change & Transition as any programme in strategic management invariably has to address issue of change in organisations. A very good text on Strategic Management.

                    I found the book to be extremely wordy. As I read the book, I found myself having to remind myself what the chapter (or topic) was suppose to be covering. Many of the statements in the book are common sense and points are repeated over and over through-out the text. The books is loaded with long list consisting of from 4-12 items. The list appear to be attempts by the authors to include every possible idea they could think of. My Professor used the questions from the test bank and many of the answers were buried in the readings. The cases studies were interesting, and the information on the website helps with the case analysis. Although after reading one of the chapters, any reading was interesting. Reading this book became a chore. If the book is required for class, start reading now because the way the book is written will make you procrastinate.

                    I found this book incredibly boring and redundant. I am suprised that this book has survived 11 editions. Thomas and Strickland don't you read the reviews? Not worth my money!

                    This book was the text for my college strategic management class, and it was one of my favorite text books (and classes.) Many of my classmates also liked this it. The case studies were very interesting, and the book gave insight into successes and failures of well known and not so well known companies. It may be somewhat wordy, but it's packed with useful information and analysis.

                                    In this book you will have to deal with tons of puzzles, primarily of the visual, complete the progression type you find in GMAT (the GMAT puzzles are of the kindergarten level compared to those here). If you enjoy solving puzzles and believe that it can help to improve your IQ (that the authors do diagnose detailedly about your problem solving process which is definitely a plus), you will be highly satisfied. In case you simply get dizzy by looking at them like what my wife does, please give it a pass.

                                    p.s. The five star rating is given to appreciate the effort of the authors for putting the large amount of extremely difficult and diverse puzzles in a 260 page book.

If pain leads to gain, they've done it, because you'll feel as if your mind is being stretched, bent and twisted. It's like yoga for your brain.

                                    The authors claim that leaders and employees who work their way through the book become better at solving business problems and spotting opportunities; they even promise to turn detail-oriented people into big-picture thinkers. They walk you through solutions, coaching you to color-code and label problem elements, create categories and apply other problem-solving tools. By the final chapter--in which you decipher an ancient Babylonian numbering system without the use of a decoder ring--you'll never approach a problem the same way again, whether it's unraveling a market trend or trying to develop a new product.

                                    I thoroughly enjoyed the book--well, at least when my brain wasn't hurting too much. This book does an excellent job of forcing you to not only solve rather difficult puzzles, but also to understand how to solve them (for some types I found myself getting them right without actually knowing what I was doing) and why you find them difficult. Markus, et al. explain the applications of the thought processes required for the puzzles to business and the symptoms of not doing so correctly. I would highly recommend it.
