Customer Reviews:
Ready to Start Offering Online Courses.......2007-09-18
Every new endeavor starts somewhere and this book is a great place to start thinking about your organization's first online educational offerings. Author Robin Neidorf combines the basics of good teaching and instructional design with the realities of the online medium. She explores the different types of adult learners (perpetual learner vs. outcome oriented learners) and how to address them. She explores the factors that lead to e-learning success: collaborative community, availability of material that appeals to six different learning types, the ability of the instructor to connect with the students individually, the need for feedback, and more.
If you're going down this path for the first time, this book provides an excellent framework for approaching your project. The author also provides valuable references to online resources.
Highly recommended.
A terrific guide for everyone, not just instructors.......2006-10-02
Teach Beyond Your Reach is a terrific resource for everyone who has to deliver knowledge from a distance. True, professional teachers and trainers who need to move their courses online will benefit from Neidorf's systematic approach to developing online instruction as well as her highly engaging and supportive writing style. However, others who find themselves in an unfamiliar teaching role -- for example, non-profits creating courses for their members or librarians delivering online information skills training -- will also appreciate the author's discussion of adult learning styles, her coverage of various distance teaching tools and activities, and her jargon-free presentation. This excellent resource is an easy-to-use, informative, and actionable guide of great value for anyone contemplating teaching at a distance, especially online. I have used it several times for course preparation, and always benefited from Neidorf's practical recommendations.
Practical guide to effective distance teaching styles.......2006-08-31
Training is part of my business, and Teach Beyond Your Reach has been both educational and energizing for me. It is the perfect companion to have at your side when you are making the leap from in-person to distance teaching. The book coaches teachers and trainers on the fundamental concepts and processes behind effective distance instruction, on making a connection when you are not there in the classroom. It is for teachers, not necessarily for techies. Chapter 1 surveys the range of tools and technologies involved, but the focus is on the teaching/learning aspects--adapting core learner-centric teaching skills to the new environment. Aside from the "distance" aspect, the book is useful for tips about communicating with learners no matter what the communication medium. College teachers, professional trainers, and organizations offering continuing education to their constituents could all benefit from this book.
A fine pick for any teacher entering the cyberworld.......2006-08-18
Instructors interested in better meeting student needs through different teaching approaches will welcome TEACH BEYOND YOUR REACH: AN INSTRUCTOR'S GUIDE TO DEVELOPING AND RUNNING SUCCESSFUL DISTANCE LEARNING CLASSES, WORKSHOPS, TRAINING SESSIONS AND MORE. Distance learning is one of the fastest-growing learning options in the country, allowing individuals to earn degrees, certifications and gain skills without entering a classroom. TEACH BEYOND YOUR REACH covers the basics of a successful distance learning approach and shares practices and examples from successful teachers. A fine pick for any teacher entering the cyberworld.

Expensive Advice.......2007-07-14
At $29.95 one might expect more than 118 pages (including the index) of practical advice. It is an excellent guide for the novice distance learning traveller. Repackaged, padded and illustrated, it would make a nice addition to the (fill in the blank) "____ For Dummies" series. However, for those of us who are adults with prior college experience and a comfortable familiarity with computers and the internet, this book is something of a redundant disappointment.
The irony here is that this book was recommended to me by a university on its Distance Learning webpage. Are they getting a kickback from the publisher for this?
On the whole, this is a great template for structuring one's learning style in concordance with one's working life. For new students or old, I recommend it highly. But, as noted, I balk at the price. Much of this information is freely available on the internet. While the authors proffer expert guidance and crucial advice, they also command an unreasonable price.

The Best Guide for Online Student.......2007-01-06
This Book is giving a good guidence for people who are looking to complete their studies through online learning system. I bought this book because it was a part of induction program required for me to study my MBA online through one of the best international universities.
Wayyy too simple a book!!!.......2006-08-30
This book is too easy. All of its topics are so obvious. I felt like I was reading things I already knew!!! I think everyone could benefit of any other complicated book.
Waste of Time & Money for Current Students.......2005-09-11
I have never been moved to write a review before, but I feel it is my civic duty to warn people away from this book. I am enrolled as an online student already and bought this book because it would supposedly give me tips for developing a good study schedule and, well, be a successful online student. The publisher is misleading customers by putting a big red burst on the cover that says "Learn how to set up an independent study schedule and stick to it" (did they READ this book before designing the cover??!!). This book contains nothing of the sort. The 33 pages (of 266) that are actually dedicated to coursework are almost insulting to read. For example, some of the "helpful tips" include: "you will want to have moderate experience with using a computer" and "you need goals and focus." The author then gives a website to visit for "specific information" on things like study skills and time management. This book will NOT help you be an effective online student. It might help you decide whether or not to become an online student, which is the only reason it gets a star.
Very Good and Helpful Book but.......2005-02-12
it needs to be updated. My copy of this book is helpful but I find that there are websites that no longer work and some of the information is outdated as well. Much has happened in the online world since it was written so I came to Amazon.com to see if there was a newer updated version that I could buy. Alas, there seems not to be one.
Getting there is half the fun!.......2001-01-11
As a new online student seeking ways to improve my gains, I came upon this useful book that helped me maximize not only my efforts, but also my focus. Pinpointing the desired learning that I wanted was crucial and this book guided me towards a process that made my journey easy, rewarding and with meaningful results. Rather than traveling haphazardly through the maze of courses this book gave me the tools to get the program that best fit me, made sense to me and looked great. As a professional Coach who helps people focus and pinpoint their efforts and change their lives at www.coachcorp.com I consider this book a valuable assist because of the specific guidance it brings to those people seeking follow-up, online education.

Teams that work well together can achieve some of the greatest breakthroughs in organizational history. But with the rapid growth in popularity of teams can come failures, and every organization has experienced teams that are disorganized, unmotivated, and ultimately, short-lived. Why Teams Can Fail identifies the most common problems faced by high-performance, self-directed teams and offers specific suggestions for spotting and solving the problems and creating teams that really work. This unique troubleshooting guide shows how to: turn fear and intimidation into confidence and motivation; overcome lack of faith and commitment, and set positive, reachable goals; smooth out adversarial relationships and handle the problem of anarchy.

great book for modern work envronment.......2001-03-31
In the past I had some concerns about work dynamics and why projects would keep failing, this book gave me amazing insights to the processes involved in team dymamics causing me to refocus my erergies, work style and accomplish better results in less time. Better than going to dilbert for figuring it out. They know how to make it work, read it. Its an important book for anyone who must particpate in elegate or be a part of the team structure environment that is cornerstione to the american work place. I think all managers and program managers who dont really owe to themselves to understand this concept to. Put it under the categorie on frequent read list of why companies fail. Alot do, but mostly wihthout a lot of people workign very hard to ensure they dont before hand. Buy the book.

Book Description
The marginalist theory of the corporation or firm, whose characteristics were formally developed in the 1930s, represents a major change in the development of traditional economic theory. In this book, Professor Schrader, a philosopher of economics, discusses the rise of the marginalist conception of the firm in the context of economic thought over the past two centuries, and explains why economists continue to defend a theory with demonstrable shortcomings: the marginalist view of the firm retains its support not through any comparative advantage in empirical or predictive power, but by virtue of its being a part of the predominant marginalist economic program. The clear problems that beset the marginalist approach to the firm signal a general dilemma for economic theory as a whole. Although economists generally remain committed to both a methodological individualism and a preference for non-intentional coordination of economic endeavor, Schrader observes that the modern corporation by its very nature is both a social collective and a locus of intentional coordination of economic activity. An economic theory that does justice to a world in which managerial corporations are among the key agents of production and distribution must generate a theory of collective action to bolster the theory of individual action that forms the present basis for most economic thinking.

Powerful Brands.......2002-03-08
(From the Department of Marketing, City University of Hong Kong)
If you want to know more about what a brand delivers, you should read this book.
This book introduced 8 brands for Brands in the Marketplace and Brands in the Company respectively, as well as 2 brands for Brands on the Internet and Brands in Society respectively. They all are well-known and successful brands. You can get to know how to establish these brands. Also, through the brands, the owners can convey their values, responsibilities, and commitment concerning community, environment, employees, and society to consumers.
So it is not easy to build up a successful brand. And this book will explore you more about brands.
Structured insights from interviewing top execs.......2001-07-12
This is a perfect book to read on a plane - each chapter makes a clear and memorable point. The whole book is based on interviews with top execs of world class brands. Drawbaugh seems to pull out the essence of the brand's situation in a few words at the beginning of the chapter and then the issues come out in a logical order. For example he clarifies the issues Unilever is facing on selecting which of its 1600 brands to focus on. You get the inside track from the guys making the decisions at Caterpillar, Shell, Kellogg, Gucci ... If you are in brands, you'll get value from this book.
A must read.......2001-04-04
Branding is more than creating a catchy slogan or a cute logo. It's hard work and fraught with risk as Kevin Drawbaugh points out in this most readable book. His many case histories from some of the world's top companies make the concept of branding come to life. Managers looking to create, extend, nurture or revitalize a brand would be wise to add this book to their reading list. Marketers, agency creatives and students of marketing and advertising should do the same. The fascinating stories behind the brands are a bonus.
Consumer-friendly.......2001-03-14
This author has a unique ability to present technical and complex information in a very readable way. As a consumer who rarely thinks of the brands in my life except to look for them on the shelf in the grocery store, I was fascinated by the personal way each case study was presented, as if it were a story of someone I could know, not an impersonal corporation. I recommend this book to anyone who is at all curious about the world of marketing in which we are all active players. Drawbaugh writes with a light touch that makes the most technical information easy to navigate through and yet, clearly backs what he has to say with sound research.
Book Description
A proven six-step process for acquiring the style, flair, and credibility needed to make it to the top
According to a recent Wall Street Journal article, managers who do not exude an allencompassing self-confidence, style, poise, and energy, in short, "executive presence," are highly unlikely to make it to the corner office. Unfortunately, the vast majority of managers, even the most talented and ambitious ones, are not born with these personal qualities. In this breakthrough book, bestselling author and world-renowned executive development coach D. A. Benton helps readers acquire executive charisma.
In Executive Charisma, Benton outlines a proven six-step approach for learning how to think, act, and relate to others like an executive.
She provides powerful tools for fine-tuning the complete executive charisma skill set, including:
- Interpersonal communications
- Managing upwards
- Confidence building
- Business humor
- Executive bearing, and more
Drawing upon her experience coaching clients at American Express, Century 21, Merrill Lynch, Nabisco, Viacom, Pepsi, and other top companies worldwide, Benton clearly defines executive charisma and explains why projecting a commanding professional demeanor is so fundamental to corporate success.
Customer Reviews:
Be all that you can be.......2007-08-29
Benton's advice is very much in line with Napolen Hill's and Dale Carnegie's: be friendly and give acceptance to maintain esteem; ask questions and favors; show weakness, be human; slow down, shut up and listen. The author expands on each of these points and more, and provides great overview and examples on every topic. It's a great refresher, and a well-written book.
Stretching Good Material.......2006-12-14
Deborah Benton is a serious student of what makes successful business people successful, and her book 'How to Think Like a CEO" reflects the seriousness and depth of her work there.
This book, on the other hand, is a very long hike for a very small picnic. She has essentially re-worked very familiar ground for her into a book that simply doesn't have enough to say to fill its length.
There are times, for example, when while reading, one realizes that the last paragraph has been nothing but semi-connected quotes from people in the large archive of Ms. Benton's interview files. It doesn't really go together and it doesn't really make any new points.
I would strongly recommend 'How to Think Like a CEO' but I would definitely not recommend this book.
How to Make Friends with Influential People.......2005-04-21
D.A. Benton's Executive Charisma is a basic book on working your way to the corner office via popularity contest. There is a lot of common sense stuff in this novel, so much so that it begs the question "How did my VP, Director, Manager, Supervisor, get his/her job?" Clearly charisma is not a prerequisite to climbing your way up the corporate ladder in 98% of companies today. Maybe this book should be mandatory (prerequisite) reading for managers.
Although I enjoyed this book, I have to say that it is highly superficial, perhaps purposely, and does not address any one area in great detail.
DA Benton outlines the "Sacred Six Steps" to becoming an outstanding leader as:
- Be the first to initiate
- Expect and give acceptance to maintain esteem
- Ask questions and ask favours
- Stand tall, straight, and smile
- Be human, humorous, and hands-on
- Slow down, shut up, and listen
All in all a good basic read for leaders or those aspiring to project their ability. And god knows that we need more people in the workplace who are willing to project their ability????
I long for a book on leadership that details how you become a great leader by being capable, producing measurable results, coming up with great strategic ideas, and making friends with those that you truly like and not just those that have influence over your career.
A Good Read!.......2004-03-01
Remember everything your mother told you. Stand up straight. Pull your shoulders back. Be outgoing. Smile. If you've forgotten these lessons, this is for you. It's not what you know, it's who you know - and what they think and feel about you - that makes all the difference in your career. Be human. Ask for favors. Ask for information. Pitch in. Have a sense of humor. Speak slowly and listen carefully. Author D.A. Benton's presumably deep, probing interviews with 500 executives convinced her that charisma isn't inborn. She believes that everyone can learn to be charismatic. Just follow the six steps that can turn even the most repulsive excuse for a manager into a charming, charismatic executive. So, read this and practice. There's no harm in it, and it might do some good. However, while recommending this basic manual, suspects that the nature of charisma is a bit like the way a jazz musician explained the nature of jazz - if you have to ask what it is, you'll never know.
Exploit Your Charisma, Your Personal Key to the Top.......2004-02-18
If you are an executive, or aspire to be one, read this book. Debra Benton simplifies the mystery of charisma into six practical, proven steps that anyone can immediately apply.
"Executive Charisma" is full of time - tested advice from the top business leaders of our time. It is a fast read, perfectly suited for busy people committed to life-long development.
As a practicing executive, I witness first-hand how top leaders relate to others on a daily basis. Those who know how to access and apply the 'soft' leadership skills are the winners, period. No matter how bright and classicaly educated a leader is, those who rise to the top have mastered the art of charisma.
Read Benton's book and learn how easy it is to turn up the juice on your executive charisma.

Book Description
Companies must confront an increasingly competitive environment with lean, flexible and market oriented structures. Therefore companies organize themselves according to their business processes. These processes are more and more often designed, implemented and managed based on standard software, mostly ERP or SCM packages. This is the first book delivering a complete description of a business driven implementation of standard software packages, accelerated by the use of reference models and other information models. The use of those models ensures best quality results and speeds up the software implementation. The book discusses how companies can optimize business processes and realize strategic goals with the implementation of software like SAP R/3, Oracle, Baan or Peoplesoft. It also includes the post implementation activities. The book cites numerous case studies and outlines each step of a process oriented implementation, including the goals, procedures and necessary methods and tools.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely terrible.......2004-04-17
Without a doubt this is the worst concept I have come across. Very unrealistic.
Do not waste your money, or your time even if someone were to give you this for free.
Excelent Book....Excelent Concept.......2002-12-14
I just finished this book. This could not have come soon enough for the initiatives that we want to initiate. I highly recomment this to anyone in an organization where profits, efficiency, are at the top of their priority.
The writing is clear, articulate and presented very well.
A great read
This boook links organization and process model.......1999-01-12
THis book is interesting book. Because Organization theory and system process intergrated. I recommand this book to process modeller, organization desinger and business modeller.
Written to appear to be a scholarly work........1998-11-25
The constant citing of references in text, instead of placing them in footnotes, makes the book very difficult to read. The author is also bent on being academic to the extreme. For example, he wastes considerable print (and the reader's time) on the definition of software and systems. Technically the book does have some merit in covering the principles and practice of installing Standard Software (ERP) but these points of illumination are far to hard find and nearly impossible to understand in this writing.
Must-read for SAP implementations.......1998-07-27
This book provides a detailed blueprint for the implementation of standard software. It is well-researched and highly structured. If you are embarking on a standard software project you should make sure that all your team members read chapter 3. It gives an excellent overview about the issues from strategy to implementation.
