    Book Description

In post-industrial societies some workers will have stable, good jobs in knowledge and learning-intensive workplaces, while many others will be underemployed or locked into a series of precarious, low-skill jobs in the periphery of the economy. In such a society, inclusions and exclusions in economics and social life are bound to correspond closely to inclusions and exclusions in adult education and training.

With the transition toward the post-industrial society increasingly complete, the challenge to reduce the exclusive tendencies in adult education and training, and to make learning a common, continuous and even universal experience is becoming more urgent than ever. The design of successful intervention strategies will depend crucially on the knowlege base of adult education, especially improved insights into the factors that are associated with participation and non-participation. By improving that knowledge base that this volume, which reports on a six-country comparative investigation of the patterns of adult education participation, seeks to make a contribution to policy and research.

5 out of 5 stars Enlightening insight into a persistent problem.......2004-12-25

This book offers engaging thought into why under-educated adults do not participate in "adult education". These articles discuss research conducted in the US, Canada, and four European countries. The articles in this study suggest that many adults who need further education are not participating on the basis of sound individual reasoning and life experience. Contrary to traditional thought, these people are not necessarily "hard to reach," or unable to succeed; the education that is currently offered is not designed for their needs. Current policies may actually only widen a literacy gap that has repercussions for business and national economic strength. Rather than continue to rely on "top down" prescriptive models of educational practice, more insight and more research into actual needs, is needed.

      5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE.......2000-08-02

If you are studying queueing methods or are an OR practitioner, then make this a mandatory text. If you are using Kleinrock or Gross & Harris, then buy this as a supplement!

This is a "quick and dirty handbook" for queueing! Mr. Hall not only provides you with the basics for understanding waiting line methods, but he also discusses how to design queues that minimize the waiting (time & psychology). I have numerous books on queueing methods (Kleinrock, Gross & Harris, Tanner, etc.); this one is the one to have on your desk!

      5 out of 5 stars Superb!!!.......1998-11-13

The title is off-puting to many mathematicians and engineers because it seems narrow. Nonetheless, many have caught on that this is a superb book by a real world practitioner in modeling who has great knowledge of the theory. The eminent queueing expert Ralph Disney gave this book a rave review in The UMAP Journal (of which I am reviews editor) and I myself have used this as a textbook in graduate courses on modeling and simulation. Highly recommended!

                            Book Description

This collection of original essays is a tribute to Donald Coleman, Emeritus Professor of Economic History in the University of Cambridge, Fellow of Pembroke College, Cambridge, and formerly Professor of Economic History at the London School of Economics. The essays are contributed by friends, former students and colleagues to honour him in his retirement. They range, as does Donald Coleman’s work itself, from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries, and reflect, in other ways, his special talents and interests. Two particular themes are reflected in the essays: the operations of businessmen and business values in history, and the factors that shaped and influenced government policies.

A few of the articles in this collection, edited by Linda Lau, may be peripheral to your interests - for me these were topics such as 'Applying Technology and TQM to Distance Learning or 'Web-Based Training for the Network Marketing industry', but in general this is an excellent collection of thoughtful and thought-provoking essays around the title themes. I'm confident that everyone involved in this area will find articles with valuable insights both basic and advanced into this rapidly burgeoning field of endeavour. For example, the pedagogical analysis in the first essay 'Web-Based Learning and Instruction: a Constructivist Approach' by Valerie N. Morphew (West Virginian Wesleyan College) is succinct, insightful and offers a basis for explaining to recalcitrant academics how their teaching may actually benefit from incorporating some web-based teaching and learning activities.

2 out of 5 stars How does technology fit with evolving distance learning?.......2000-12-27

As a practitioner of distance learning in a number of forms and formats, I eagerly seek new publications that might help to bring a little more knowledge and science to the art. The title of Lau's book was sufficiently intriguing for my to buy it. Its promise of tying technologies to issues, trends, and opportunities, however remains largely unfilled.

Lau has produced a collection of 16 chapters from 22 authors with broad backgrounds and a divergent set of views on distance learning. Some have addressed the issues to technology application head-on, some not so directly. There is an underlying unevenness of this collection, though they all relate to distance teaching or distance learning. Some chapters are stiff and formal (chapter 1, for example) and others are very loose (2); some are broad and general (2), and others focused and technical (10, 16); some are well documented (5, 9), and others not at all (7); some are profusely illustrated (1, 10), and most not visually supported.

Lau set out to provide a volume to (1)"provide the theoretical foundation of distance learning," that (2) "describes the conceptual aspects of distance learning." and (3) "provides five cases of practical implementation of distance learning." To some degree, all are provided with varying success.

Several chapters were well received by this reader. Of special interest was Adrian's piece on technology and total quality management in developing a learning environment. He does a nice job of presenting and integrating concepts of TQM and distance learning, and setting forth some modifications in the traditional TQM process to apply to the distance environment.

The piece which may come closest to meeting the promise of the title is by Smith and Ransbottom of the United States Military Academy at West Point; it lays out a fairly technical discussion of issues and challenges in meeting the evolving needs and technology related to the use of video in the distance learning world.

Adams and Freeman also offer an interesting short analysis of the use of knowledge management and application of technology in an evolving doctoral program.

There are of gems buried in this volume, though they might be difficult to locate. There are also some good ideas which bear further development; perhaps a project for another day or other researchers.

If you are a value-conscious book buyer and reader, you may want to skip this one. The few really strong and useful chapters might not justify the....price tag.

Customer Centered Selling teaches you the secret of the world-famous Xerox sales training program. The secret, Robert Jolles reveals, is reversing the conventional selling practice of searching for customer needs. To truly create urgency, you must focus instead on the customer's problems and decision-making process. Jolles provides a systematic, repeatable, predictable approach that teaches you to anticipate and influence behavior as the customer moves through an eight-stage "decision cycle" and ultimately discovers his or her needs. The book includes a series of case studies, activities, and exercises that enable you to better understand the principles being taught, so you can immediately apply them to your own unique scenarios. This book is a "must read" for all sales professionals, sales managers, and managers in need of a disciplined approach to persuading others.

"Customer Centered Selling" teaches you the secret of the world-famous Xerox sales training program. For almost two decades, tens of thousands of salespeople have learned the lessons presented here by Robert L. Jolles, the Sales Trainer with the longest tenure working at Xerox Corporation today. The secret, Jolles reveals, is reversing the conventional selling practice. You must focus first on your customer's needs and decision-making process, instead of on the selling process. Jolles provides a systematic approach that teaches you to anticipate-- and influence-- customer behavior as the customer moves through an eight-stage "decision cycle". Only after you understand the steps of this decision cycle, Jolles cautions, are you prepared to match it to your "selling cycle". At the heart of these lessons is the simple but brilliant role-reversing concept of taking an idea and planting it in the mind of your customer-- making the customer believe he or she thought of it first. Jolles teaches a repeatable, predictable selling process that can be adapted or modified to fit any experience that requires the skills of persuasion. The book includes a series of case studies, activities, and exercises that enable you to better understand the principles being taught, so you can immediately apply them to your own unique scenarios. This book is a "must read" for all sales professionals and sales managers and all managers in need of a disciplined approach to persuading others.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best!.......2004-09-08

I've rarely seen a more logical approach to selling. It leaves nothing to imagination, making every step in the process clear and explicit. It even expands on Rackham's SPIN sequence. If you're tired of guessing, this book's for you.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Across the Board!!!.......2003-08-12

TThis book is terrific...It answered many questions I had about sales approach to b2b selling. If you are selling b2b or your product/service has a high value, you will love the tools this book will give you to succeed! It has great examples, and useful exercises to make the material 'stick'. Rob breaks everything down to minute detail, so everything is duplicatable and understandable. I hope to see an audio version sometime in the future. I love the questioning sequences detailed by Rob and his honest and ethical approach to every step in the sales cycle.

This book also teaches you how to use the selling principles in everything else in life from managing employees to bringing up children. I am already beginning to be more pursuasive with my fiance and my boss. I am loving it!!!

Robert Jolles teaches you very SOUND techniques and not hype like Tom Hopkins, Zig Ziglar or Joe Girard. I love the fact that he was a senior sales training consultant at Xerox, which is world-known for its investment in sales research and its training methodologies.

3 out of 5 stars Good Book - but its missing that little "something".......2002-07-21

I am pretty new to the world of sales - a reluctant salesman who has realised that selling is central to success in any relationship based endeavour. What I have been searching for is a sales 'system' - a repeatable process that allows you to 'advise' the client for mutual benefit, rather than simply sell him. And Robert Jolles almost hits the mark. He gives you a sales strategy - a strategy with 8 steps in the selling process, that with a bit of practice will make the sales call more of a consultation.

But, for me, the book contradicted its title somewhat. This is particularly evident where Jolles uses the boxing metaphor for selling (he compares selling to you and your client stepping into the ring for a few rounds) and 'bleeding' your client. Now maybe I'm naive, but I think this is what is totally wrong with the sales profession - I don't think you're ever fighting your client, or should be trying to 'bleed' him or her, or make him hurt.

Now perhaps Jolles was simply trying to make the point that the client needs to be fully aware of the implications of his/her problem etc, but it was the way he says it that shows he doesn't have the customers true interests at heart. And to me,its the philosophy of the sales professional combined with sales effectiveness that is critical to building long-term, mutually benefical client relationships.

I would recommend this book to you - it teaches a sound sales process that is repeatable. But for me it missed that extra something.

5 out of 5 stars Takes selling to the next level.......2001-08-18

Clearly defines the steps to making a sale along with the understanding of how and when a customer makes a buying decision. People don't make a large purchase decision until they have a "problem". So if you are selling large ticket items and or programs, then you better understand how to move the decision maker into the "problem" stage. I thought that the author's examples and situations outlined in the book were excellent and really drove home the points he was making. It is an easy read and thoroughly enjoyable!

I have been teaching Rob's methods for close to 2 years at the Univ. of Houston. Rob is a genuine person and his methods work...period. Yet, you cannot just read this book and expect it all to sync the first day. You need to practice this....daily to have the impact required.

This handbook invites readers who are interested in mediation, negotiation, and conflict resolution to share the perspectives of experts in the field. Contributors include scholars, mediators, trainers, and negotiators, all of whom are passionate about their work. The handbook takes an interdisciplinary approach to mediation, emphasizing both internal and external factors as important sources of influence when negotiating conflicts. It explores the cultural and institutional frameworks that have shaped intervention processes, and it considers which intervention techniques might work - when, how, and why. Particular topics covered include: understanding variation in mediation programs; the dynamics of power in child custody mediation; pre-mediation strategies for dealing with strong emotions; and developing a conflict-positive organization. The Blackwell Handbook of Mediation affirms that the study of mediation, negotiation, and conflict resolution has moved beyond experimental research and descriptive analyses into a more sophisticated domain.

                                Book Description

This volume in the Praeger Security International (PSI) series "Classics of the Counterinsurgency Era" defines the laws of insurgency and outlines the strategy and tactics to combat such threats. Drawn from the observations of a French officer, David Galula, who witnessed guerrilla warfare on three continents, the book remains relevant today as American policymakers, military analysts, and members of the public look to the counterinsurgency era of the 1960s for lessons to apply to the current situation in Iraq and Afghanistan. With a new foreword by John A. Nagl, author of Counterinsurgency Lessons from Malaya and Vietnam (Praeger, 2002).

4 out of 5 stars Real world Look on Battling Insurgents .......2007-09-24

I picked up this book after reading the book "Fiasco", a book critical of the U.S. actions in Iraq, after the author noted that officers in the U.S. Military are currently using this book as a learning tool text book. Gaulle was a French veteran of WWII, Indonesia and served as a UN observer in Greece during an insurgent attempt to remove the government. He makes it very clear that the counterinsurgent (the government) in charge must win the battle for the population and that the soldier has a much more complex multi-dimensional role in creating trust within the population, creating security while not being too autocratic. He also states that successful adaptive leaders should be granted more local control on the ground allowing greater interaction. The author uses examples of insurgents from Algeria, Greece, and China along with an emerging U.S. Vietnam war that is evolving by the time the book was completed in late 1863. Gaulle notes that geography is a great aid to insurgents along with sympathetic borders. He also notes the classic insurgent method of intimidation; kill local politicians and police to make a greater impact on the masses, something well reflected in Iraq. On the other hand, he demonstrates how the Chinese Nationals treated their prisoners well, obtaining potential recruits, and how the nationals, upon gaining a territory would have a support administration prepared to go right in and set up. The Chinese nationals' organization abilities virtually provide a blue print for the counterinsurgents to follow. Although the text is 40 years old, written during the ruptures of colonial control of third world countries, it still is applicable today in the Middle East and elsewhere as a similar if not more sophisticated warfare is fought by insurgents, particularly those well supported, hence the major problem. The book is written in brief text book style and is a read most appreciated by those with a military background. Those without military experience or a technical appreciation may find it a not very colorful read. The book is very direct in its brevity with just 99 pages but a very insightful book in that short space. I purchased the paperback new for $28.

5 out of 5 stars Modern day classic ..........2007-02-07

David Galula's Counterinsurgency Warfare: Theory & Practice is a classic. It is a classic in the sense that it is ... a work of enduring excellence ...an authoritative source [Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary]. I recommend this volume because it makes better sense of other books on intelligence and special operations, by serving as a metric for both policy and operational analysis.

Written almost as a `good news/bad news' aphorism, Galula concedes ..."Very little is offered beyond formulas - which are sound as far as they go - such as, `Intelligence is the key to the problem,' or `The support of the population must be won." P xii.

The essence of the text is clearly stated ..."to define the laws of counterrevolutionary warfare, to deduce from them its principles, and to outline the corresponding strategy and tactics." P xiii.

Galula begins by defining insurgency as ..."a protracted struggle conducted methodically, step by step, in order to attain specific intermediate objectives leading finally to the overthrow of the existing order ...it can no more be predicted than a revolution; its beginnings are so vague that to determine exactly when an insurgency starts is a difficult legal, political, and historical problem." P 5.

Vital decisions depend on the quality of the intelligence available to policy makers. Additionally, and possibly more importantly, intelligence must be evaluated and presented in terms of a practical application. Galula delivers on his promise, as Counterinsurgency Warfare systematically examines the theoretical i.e., strategic aspect of intelligence in terms of practical/tactical i.e., operational applications.

5 out of 5 stars Never Has a Book Been More Relevant in Our Time.......2006-12-02

Counterinsurgency Warfare: Theory and Practice is perhaps the best textbook on how to fight a guerilla war (to read about how to conduct a guerilla war read Mao Zedong's On Guerilla War or Alberto Bayo's 150 Questions for a Guerilla). David Galua wrote this book. He was a French military officer whose experience in Algeria (during its war of independence from 1954 to 1962) has shaped his views on how to fight an insurgency. As a result, he has written a book that is credible, effective, and given today's current events, very relevant.
This book serves as an effective teaching tool for anyone interested in understanding how guerilla war (including terrorism) can be subdued. It short, well written, and presented in a format that is easy for anyone to understand. This contrasts greatly with current military literature of today (including the upcoming US Army's FM 3-24, Counterinsurgency Operations which is, in my view, too big for a busy officer to read in a single day).
This book, along with Roger Trinquier's, Modern Warfare, should be included as part of every military officer's recommended reading list. Not only is this book thought provoking (i.e. in providing strategies in fighting insurgents), it is also relevant to our current struggle against international terrorism. This book should be treated as an important weapon in any warrior's arsenal.

Counter Insurgency, and other related Counter Insuregency Books, journals, white papers, should be mandatory reading for: civilian, military, strategic planners, intelligence officers, Congress, think tanks executive managers and planners before they decide to "..cross The Rubicon..." 5 out of 5 stars Excellent strategic resource.......2004-03-25

This book provides a valuable strategic framework with which to implement Six Sigma within a company today. Unlike most books on Six Sigma, which focus on the granular details of six sigma implementation, this book focuses on implementation from a strategic perspective; in other words, on how a company's top leadership team must be intimately involved in making Six Sigma work by creating an internal "climate of alignment" to make Six Sigma initiatives suceed. From my perspective, a critical resource for today's CEOs and their top leadership teams!

                                2 out of 5 stars Not recommended.......2004-03-01

Unless you are the CEO of a company and have total control over implementing a Six Sigma program, I wouldn't recommend this book. It doesn't go much into the meat of Six Sigma, but is focused around developing a Six Sigma culture within your organization. It is also very redundant, repeating the same themes over and over throughout the book. A good editor could have reduced this book to 50 pages. Not recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Six Sigma Leadership Book!.......2003-04-25

Well written from the strategic view of Six Sigma and where it fits into your existing corporate methodologies, process efforts and strategic initiatives. The center chapters of the book (3 through 5) are extremely rich in content. The PriceWaterhouse pedigree is obvious in the writing style and view point. Well done!

5 out of 5 stars Steeped in practical examples and avoids statistical jargon.......2002-12-01

A lot of the Six Sigma books and articles I have read appear to assume you greatly miss your college statistics class. This book focuses on issues, ideas and examples relevant to senior management, while referencing some of the tools and techniques that will be essential to execute successfully. Let's face it -- senior executives need examples to create the sense of urgency and "what can be" through Six Sigma; there are plenty of books, consultants and training firms who can take you from that commitment through execution. I highly recommend this book for managers who want to understand why they should seriously consider Six Sigma or similar approaches (TQM, CQI, etc.) to improve their company's or business unit's effectiveness in meeting their customer's needs and efficiency vs. competitors.

5 out of 5 stars Packed with Knowledge!.......2002-10-12

Thanks to endorsements from managerial heavyweights like Jack Welch, most people in business are by now familiar with Six Sigma as a process for measuring and reducing product defects. In Strategic Six Sigma, however, Dick Smith, Jerry Blakeslee and Richard Koonce demonstrate that the Six Sigma methodology can and should be applied to the highest levels of strategic planning. Simply put, the authors illustrate how the rigors of Six Sigma can improve your performance in terms of overall strategy, growth and customer satisfaction in the same way that it streamlines operations on a production floor. We...strongly recommend this book to business leaders, executives and managers, all of whom will benefit from its hands-on advice for integrating the tenets of Six Sigma into corporate strategy.

This is a manual of the theory and practice of collective bargaining, how it works and why. It is not a textbook or a "how to" book. It is a work that looks at how collective bargaining actually works. The theories and practices presented here are enhanced by the experiences of not only the two authors, but of the many practitioners who have been able to examine in a new light their experiences with the concepts discussed here.

                                      Book Description

Justice in the Workplace acts as a central reference point for application of organizational justice and helps human resource managers relate the importance of justice to their work environments.

Forming much of this book's content, outcomes, processes, and interpersonal treatment are three powerful tools for building and maintaining workplace justice. In Part I these books are discussed at a theoretical level. Part II applies these theories to several issues important to both human resource management and society. And Part III looks at organizational justice in the years ahead.

Compared to the first volume, this book will appeal to practitioners and researchers in such applied areas as human resource management, industrial organizational psychology, and management.

                                          Book Description

This volume contributes to a growing consensus about effective workplace practices. The collection combines detailed studies of single industries (automobile assembly, apparel, and machine tools) with cross-industry studies of financial performance. Compared to most past investigations, the research here has better measures of both workplace practices and organizational performance. The contributors find that systems of innovative human resource management practices can have large effects on business performance. Success does not come from any single innovation, but from a coherent system encompassing pay, training, and employee involvement.
