      Book Description

Finally—a school improvement plan that raises standardized test scores and improves your students' performance!

Standardized tests are so widely used in public schools, they seem to have been around forever. On the contrary, standardized testing as we know it today is a relatively recent phenomenon, and in today’s classrooms and schools the stakes have never been higher. For students, test results may determine whether they are promoted from one grade to another or if they receive their high school diplomas. For teachers, the pressures are equally great. Student outcomes on standardized tests are often directly linked to annual evaluations, pay raises, and even future employment. And for school administrators, these tests can determine the reputation of a school and be the basis for public rewards or demoralizing sanctions.

Raising Test Scores for All Students marries knowledge about testing and test preparation with school improvement, providing a comprehensive guide for administrators looking for a systemic approach to the challenge of standardized testing. Eugene Kennedy includes a concise overview of the history and research on testing, case studies, flow charts and forms, as well as a four-step approach to improving performance:

. . . Plus strategies and techniques for motivating all your students. This innovative approach is an invaluable tool for any educator!

      Book Description

      From the Foreword:

'This book is an excellent tool for practitioners who are interested in the merits and pitfalls of the technique…. (The author's) research is an example of inventiveness, diligence and accuracy' - Freerk A. Lootsma, Delft Institute of Technology

Data envelopment Analysis is a Mathematical Programme for measuring performance efficiency of organizational units. The organizational units, termed as decision-making units (DMU) can be of any kind: manufacturing units, a set of schools, banks, hospitals, power plants, police stations, prisons, a set of firms etc.

DEA has been unsuccessfully applied to measure the performance efficiency of these different kinds of DMUs which share a common characteristic - that they are non-profit organization where measurement of performance efficiency is difficult.

DEA has been employed for assessing the relative performance of a set of firms that use a variety of identical inputs-say in the case of a school: quality of students, teachers, grants etc.,-to produce a variety of identical outputs-number of students who pass the final year, average grades obtained by the students in the final

      year etc.

DEA assumes the performance of the DMUs by using the concepts of efficiency or productivity which is measured as the ratio of total outputs to total inputs. Also, the efficiencies estimated are relative to the best performing DMU or DMUs. The best performing DMU is given a score of 100% and the performance of other DMUs vary between 0 -100%.

2 out of 5 stars Too many typos.......2004-05-01

In this book, author not only lays the foundation of the technique of DEA effectively, but also dedicates a significant portion of the book to illustrate it through full-fledged applications implemented by the author himself. It covers the latest developments in this field and lists out resources. A "not-too-rigorous" mathematical treatment makes this book an easy rapid reading text. A chapter dedicated to do's and don'ts from the implementation point of view and solutions to the selected problems at the end of the book makes it very useful. The book emphasizes on practice rather than abstract theory.

The book though disappoints readers having a keen eye for details, due to a number of typographical errors, use of variables without defining them and inappropriate sequencing of problems within exercises and across chapters. The inadvertent insertion of technical details unnecessarily at numerous instances might distract or annoy readers. The matrix representation of the formulations need not have been left in the main body of the text. Similarly discussion on the non-Archimedean constant could have been extracted out to an appendix.

The author begins with very lucid and clear exposition of terms, concepts aided with graphical illustrations. He elucidates the applicability of DEA to Not-For-Profit organizations with reasoning and elaborates the underlying philosophy of DEA. The generalized mathematical formulation by first principles leading to formulation of fractional DEA program through a simple example elicits interest among readers. The CCR model laying the first stepping stone in the formal theory of DEA is immediately followed by dual DEA formulation which capitalize the interest aroused till then.

The relationship between output (input) maximizing (minimizing) multiplier DEA and the input (output) oriented envelopment DEA in chapter 2 could have been better illustrated through a solved example. The two-stage optimization procedure is yet another distraction which could have been avoided by taking it appendix as it is not used further in text. In the section on interpretation of dual, the example involving firms PQR & T is inserted unnecessarily which creates discontinuity and concludes in an adhoc fashion.

In line with the chronology of the theory of DEA, the concept of "economies of scale" is introduced subsequently in chapter 3, which includes basic concepts of CRS and VRS, technical and scale efficiencies, estimation of MPSS and their detailed investigation. This helps the reader understand the evolution of DEA to real life adaptation and its increasing acceptance. This chapter ends with ample examples for the reader to have a good grasp of the theory. This chapter introduces the BCC model quite succinctly backed by good references, but is plagued with a number of typographical errors. With this chapter, the basic theory and evolution of DEA during its foundation years is covered exhaustively and the text is fairly easy to understand as the shift to application of theory beyond this chapter. Besides a good understanding of the dual LP theory is a prerequisite to develop a sound foundation.

The variants of basic models and the recent developments have been covered in chapter 4 of the book which covers Multiplicative DEA models, Additive models, Window Analysis and Malmquist Productivity Index Approach. Similarly, variants in these models, such as use of non-discretionary input / output, treatment of categorical variables, incorporation of judgmental and subjective weights, are discussed. These models and variants are briefly introduced but examples for select few are illustrated. Examples for each type of variant could however have made the chapter more effective. The chapter ends with three exercise problems and a note for advanced readers on other DEA models which establishes its linkage with multi criteria decision making models. This evokes appreciation for utility of DEA extensions.

The best of the book lies in the chapter on computer support for DEA, wherein the computational features of DEA are taken into account along with the resources available in print and web media. DEA software is presented in the fifth chapter which is aptly detailed with finer implementation level details like compatibility with the OS, the embedded solver, limits on the size of the problem, interfacing with other common software etc. The format of data input, specification of variables, syntax of command, and snapshots of the various intermediate and final outputs along with their interpretation make very interesting and engaging reading. This is very helpful for readers who want to try out DEA. The software of varying degrees of robustness and complexity are demonstrated namely DEAP, EMS, GAMS formulation and Excel serving the vast range of readers on the spectrum of elementary to advanced level.

The chapter on DEA bibliography and application takes the reader to the world of "DEA in practice" which helps one understand the issues involved in problem formulation, implementation, sensitivity analysis of model, post DEA analysis, validation and reaffirmation of the results through techniques such as regression etc. The problems attempt to demonstrate full-fledged implementation which range from comparative performance of schools to productivity assessment of State transport undertakings in India, from comparative risk assessment of energy systems and energy efficiencies of transport modes in India to Carbon dioxide emissions of countries. This wide range of problems adds to the richness of the text especially when the studies have been carried out by the author himself.

The book concludes with a chapter on do's and don'ts for undertaking DEA studies. Some fundamental considerations enlisted for characterizing DMUs, selection of input/output and DEA model, post DEA procedures, strengths and weaknesses of DEA would enhance confidence of amateurs. The chapter climaxes with a graph clearly illustrating the severe limitation of DEA in case of DMUs having same peer members, leaving the reader wanting for more.

A book covering so much is expected to be shallow, but it makes easy reading and opens the doors to the field of DEA. The most notable feature of the book is its use of many small case studies, comprehensive bibliography and illustration of software usage. "DEA made simple" or "DEA in 24 hours" could have been more appropriate titles.

      Book Description

Today, quality is the battleground on which global competition takes place, yet without effective leadership no quality program can succeed. This penetrating book exposes the problems that arise when leadership in business fails to do its job, and offers powerful, inspirational examples of firms that have confronted this problem and prevailed through leadership that aims at producing quality results. By highlighting the practices of such noted leaders as Walt Disney and Michael Eisner at Walt Disney, Ray Kroc at McDonald's, Sam Walton at Wal-Mart, David Kearns at Xerox, and Robert Galvin at Motorola, the authors reveal how each of these legendary leaders possessed three crucial leadership characteristics -- vision, strong values and beliefs, and the active courage to make their visions a reality. These characteristics, they show, make the difference between superior performance and "business as usual." With eloquent case studies, the authors demonstrate that unusually successful business leaders show the way for their employees by nurturing cultures that encourage and reward quality performance and by exhibiting personal characteristics that inspire excellence. A leader dedicated to a single vision, the authors show, inspires personal commitment to a common purpose. Walt Disney had a vision of a company that would never stop creating, innovating, and growing. Values and beliefs serve as the basis for direction and action in a business. Superior leaders, the authors argue, are expert in the promotion of values -- such as Ray Kroc's obsession with high-quality, inexpensive food in a clean environment. The courage to make things happen is exhibited most dramatically by Sam Walton's perseverance in mass market retailing. The payoffs for these superior leaders included the loyalty and commitment of their employees, quality, and profits.

The authors' approach to leadership for quality management -- with its focus on vision, values, and courage -- emphatically demonstrates what leaders must do to consistently produce quality results if they want their organizations to prosper and grow.

Vision, Values and Courage's title alone summarizes the fascination of the "field" of management with marketable, but painfully vague concepts.

Nowhere in the book are these concepts defined with any precision. (E.g., how do we know vision when we see it? How much courage is sufficient, and when does it become foolhardy? As for values, I have yet to meet a human without any. Telling me that a leader must have values is not particularly enlightening when one might wish to distinguish between leaders such as, say, Ted Turner and Adolph Hitler. In fact, it resembles the old rejoinder of international relations scholars to the notion of the "national interest": ask 20 different people what the term means, and you'll get at least 20 different answers.)

Hence, any exploration of concepts devoid of even minimal clarity becomes virtually tautological. (To be sure, these particular "concepts" are words that may be especially intractable, but that should hardly have prevented massive reconceptualization of the work before inflicting it on the market.) Then again, anyone with at least a smattering of knowledge of social sciences and methods is immediately painfully aware within the first few pages that without a clear argument based on clear concepts, it becomes impossible to construct basic hypotheses (not even attempted here) or to collect evidence systematically, let alone engage in insightful analysis--be it descriptive or causal--of patterns or lack thereof. The case studies, as with so many management books, simply skew the sample towards successful leaders and do not even bother to worry about all those potential leaders with the allegedly necessary vision, values and courage, but who failed to raise their business career to the level of the other titans. (The proportion of failed leaders may not be easily measured, but logical rigor demands the recognition of this severe, and some would say devastating, limitation for the study.)

Note that all this is not Dr. Snyder's fault, but the basic, essential flaw in the entire field of business management studies and the culture it encourages among its proponents and educators. (Working in a top 5 business school's library, I can confirm that nearly every book on reserve assigned to management courses is virtually as fluffy.)

Snyder's book simply repeats the prevailing paradigm in style and content, a paradigm that paralyzes the rest of the literature from providing actual education. The case studies are mildly intriguing as thumbnail biographies, but when it comes time to answer the question, "what conclusions can be learned from this book?", the embarrassing answer is: nothing you'd stake your professional reputation on.

The book does have its own value, however: I got a dollar for it at the local used bookstore, and feel quite confident that, at that price, I made out like a bandit, notwithstanding the loss on the original investment.

This is the best book on Globalization that you will find anywhere-- better than Thomas Friedman BY FAR!

      5 out of 5 stars A TRUE VISIONARY SPEAKS.......2000-02-07

The textbook for Globalization, hands down. So many people today are concerned about what will happen in the future -- Samuel Huntington, Thomas Friedman, among so many others. No one offers a solution. That is, until this book. Though lesser known, Neil Snyder has created the BEST management book I have ever seen. He writes for all you out there who want to be LEADERS and not FOLLOWERS, because in this new era of GLOBALIZATION, it's sink or swim. Snyder wants us to rise to the challenge.

Neil Snyder himself once wrote a thesis about "hostile" economic conditions in the world economu. This little known pamphlet was PROPHETIC in its interpretation of events, and his view of the world has been the one which rings a bell in this day and age.

BUY THIS BOOK. YOU NEED IT!

5 out of 5 stars The HANDBOOK and TEXTBOOK for the 21st CENTURY.......2000-02-07

Without question, the handbook for Globalization. Before there was Thomas Friedman reporting, there was Neil Snyder exploring, and tell you what, every prediction he made has come true. Now more than ever the United States is competing in an especially cut-throat world and Snyder's book is a call to arms for American citizens to take on the responsibility of leading the world. All one has to do is to read a few pages of the Wall Street Journal to understand that we are now navigating a "hostile" economic environment. Gas prices are rising, inflation is around the corner, and if the last couple years have been like a roller coaster, let me tell you, you aint seen nothing yet.

Snyder's book is for the people who need to lead the world. Dont follow- if you follow, you'll get trampled.

            Book Description

This book is a selection of Jacques Drèze's work over the past ten years on the topics of stagflation, lasting unemployment and unused capacity. At the theoretical level, the author has contributed to the formulation and analysis of general equilibrium models that allow for price rigidities and excess supply. These models have interesting macroeconomic implications and lend themselves to econometric implementation. They thus help to pull together separate branches of economics. These models have also been found helpful in the study of related topics, such as equilibrium with increasing returns, public goods, price dynamics and the limitations of wage flexibility. This collection of papers is representative of efforts by European economists to integrate micro- and macro-economics, and to use theory for empirical and policy purposes. How their thinking developed, and what contribution of lasting value it made, is sketched in an overview chapter.

              Book Description

Changing Work, Changing Workers looks at U.S. factories and workplace education programs to see what is expected currently of workers. The studies reported in Hull's book draw their evidence from firsthand, sustained looks at workplaces and workplace education efforts. Many of the chapters represent long-term ethnographic or qualitative research. Others are fine-grained examinations of texts, curricula, or policy. Such perspectives result in portraits that honor the complex nature of work, people, and education.

For example, one chapter examines the shop floor of a computer manufacturer in Silicon Valley and shows how well-intentioned organizational changes, such as the imposition of self-directed work teams, often go awry, particularly in multicultural workplaces. Another chapter provides the history of a federally funded literacy project designed for garment workers in New York City, documenting the struggles and achievements that accompanied this attempt to prepare immigrants for alternatives to work in a rapidly downsizing industry. Other settings and topics include a community college where minority women are prepared for the skilled trades; an auto-accessory plant with a "pay-for-knowledge" training program; a union-based literacy program designed for hospital workers; and the popular vocational curriculum called "applied communications."

                                    Book Description

The first book in this important new series, under the general editorship of Nobel Laureate Robert Solow, Institutions, Innovation and Growth assembles a stellar cast of international contributors. Leading economists join the debate on innovation and economic growth, focusing on a broad spectrum of issues ranging from labor markets to corporate governance. Growth paths within the OECD are also assessed, with particular emphasis on contrasts between US and European models. The book seeks to identify those institutional factors, taking into account different national trajectories, which might serve to promote economic growth in Europe.

As with all books in this series, Institutions, Innovation and Growth offers cutting edge research that is relevant to the world in which we live. It will be essential reading for scholars, policymakers and interested readers concerned with the economic challenges facing Europe in the twenty-first century.

1 out of 5 stars Is Technology only IT?.......2005-08-02

This book is a mixture of interviews (that are quite interesting) and insight (that is too thinly explained and mostly concerns IT companies). The book IS of small size and easily portable, which seems to be the main promise, and it says it includes quick tips (it delivers, some), but also speedy solutions (doesn't deliver, because they don't exist, and most of the explanations and case studies are too short and superficial for anything to be learned from them) and cutting-edge ideas (for one business only). Suffices as a series of facts and listing of interesting company names, but not much help for a practitioner, and for a MBA degree a student would need many many many more books.

4 out of 5 stars Business focus, brief and filled with points to ponder.......2001-03-11

This wonderful little book covers a wide range of topics in 240 pages. It is a series of short essays, interviews with industry movers and shakers, and articles by different authors.

The central theme is the business value of technology and how business can harness technology to achieve strategic and tactical goals. Indeed, the first two chapters, The Value of Technology to Business and Managing Your Business with Technology, set the tone. These are followed by chapters that address slices of technology management.

People and Technology, Chapter 3, is the least focused because of the array of topics that are addressed. It covers everything from business roles and responsibilities to the need for corporate policies for e-mail. Included are four case studies of "Stellar Performers" that give best practices. The authors manage to cram this all into 28 pages. They also manage to convey a lot of good information - no mean feat considering the range of topics covered and the page count allotted to each.

Chapter 4, Role of Information Technology, is too short and the material would have been more effective had it been combined with the previous chapter.

Things pick up starting with Chapter 5, which provides excellent advice and food for thought on vendor management. This chapter covers everything from vendor evaluation and selection to relationship management. Each topic is quickly covered, but there are a lot of valuable points made by the contributing authors.

My favorite chapter, 6, covers best practices in technology management. I discovered something new or rediscovered something I knew but forgot in each article, essay and case study.

The final chapter, Emerging Technologies: A Manager's Three Year Plan, is a quick breeze through technology and issues of which managers on the technology and business sides of a company need to be aware (and address). Some of the better articles address information security, data warehousing and java. While these are standard fare, this chapter also addresses subtle issues such as recruiting java developers.

The appendix, titled Measuring Workplace Performance with IT, is a quick read that should have been expanded into a chapter. This was my second favorite part of the book and I hated to see it end.

I obviously like the book and recommend it to business process owners and IT technical experts who aspire to management positions. I gave the book four stars instead of five because some of the material is dated. Specifically, many of the interviews with industry leaders reflect their view and opinions cica 1998 - things change too quickly and it shows in these areas. However, this book is filled with timeless, sound advice, which makes reading it a productive way to spend an evening or lazy weekend afternoon.
