Book Description

There is no doubt that we live in a truly global economy. Japanese automobiles are manufactured in American plants and exported to Europe. The Golden Arches of McDonalds beckon to customers in over 100 countries. Skyrocketing oil prices have a ripple effect on the cost of thousands of goods worldwide. From Seattle to Genoa, protestors decry the injustices of trade agreements perceived to favor the "rich" countries over the "poor." The Encyclopedia of the Global Economy illuminates these issues and many more, covering a wide spectrum of concepts, people, and organizations related to economic globalization--from its origins in the quest for exotic spices in the 16th century to the debates and controversies that reflect it today. Volume 1 features over 150 entries, organized alphabetically, with definitions and descriptions, examples, photographic illustrations, references, and exhibits featuring the most current data. Topical coverage includes international trade, foreign investment, transnational corporations, and economic and human development, highlighting such contemporary issues as offshore outsourcing, corporate social responsibility, child labor, sustainable consumption, and the digital divide. This volume also includes profiles of prominent economists, business leaders, and policymakers who have contributed to our understanding of globalization, as well as organizations, such as the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, that work to promote it. A timeline of major events and a glossary of key concepts and institutions complement the narrative entries. Volume 2 includes a wide array of primary documents, a "data bank" of world statistics on demographic and economic trends, and print and Internet resources for further research. Each document is introduced with an explanation of its context and linked to related articles in Volume 1. Examples include the text of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), reports on environmental degradation and poverty reduction from the United Nations, and dozens of tables and graphs reflecting international investment, business activity, productivity, labor, and socioeconomic conditions around the world. Cross-referenced throughout, featuring a comprehensive index, and cutting across such disciplines as politics, sociology, and business, this unique reference will be an indispensable resource for students, teachers, businesspeople, and general readers interested in the dynamics of the global economy and its profound impact on nations, businesses, communities, and individuals.

Volume 1 holds over a hundred alphabetical entries which blend definitions and descriptions with photos and references incorporating the most current data with contemporary issues. Volume 2 uses primary documents on statistics and economic trends to explain context, related articles, and studies on issues of global economy. Add an index and extensive cross-referencing and you have a winning, lasting reference.

    Book Description

The MIT Encyclopedia of the Japanese Economy was the first English-language encyclopedia to cover all major aspects of Japan's postwar economy. The second edition has been fully revised and expanded, and includes previously unpublished data as well as coverage of recent developments in the economy. The definitional entries concisely explain major economic concepts and include translations of Japanese economic terms and cross references to the longer topical essays. The 180 topical essays cover banks, financial systems, major industries, corporate groups, management practices, labor unions, international trade and investments, government economic policies, and more. They also include comprehensive statistics, American and Japanese views on economic relations between the two countries, and suggestions for further reading. A new index contains names of major companies.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable reference source.......1999-01-06

As an international equity portfolio manager specializing in Japanese equities, this book is a very valuable reference source. The book describes many of the key institutions and their interlocking nature. Full of cross references, addresses & phone numbers (for institutions) and mini bibliographies for most major concepts, this book is a great hub for studying the Japanese economy. I look forward to the next edition.

1 out of 5 stars Definitely not worth the money.......2005-10-26

This book contains about 135 short essays on topics that would be of interest to someone doing basic research on John Maynard Keynes and/or Keynesian economics. Some basic topics covered are Keynes and Probability,What Remains of Keynes?,Liquidity Trap,Marshall and Keynes,Microfoundations of Macroeconomics,The Influence of Burke and Moore on Keynes.etc.The problem is that too many of the brief essays attempt to cover far too much in far too few pages. The result is that many errors of omission and commission occur.A book selling for $300.00 should do a much better job.I selected the essays"Keynes and Probability" and "What Remains of Keynes?" to review. Each of these essays does an extremely poor job.The author of the first essay bases his review on second hand literature written by B.Bateman.The following claim is made:"In response to Ramsey's...critical review of A Treatise on Probability(TP),Keynes began a long journey to escape from his early beliefs.By the time of the General Theory,Keynes had developed a subjective theory of probability, dropped the notion of an objective good and concluded that individuals were irrational...held subjective degrees of belief..."etc.(Cate,1997,p.284).There is simply no support for these musings once it is realized that Ramsey's reviews are based on a very poor reading of basically one chapter of the TP,chapter III, that was taken out of context and badly misinterpreted.Ramsey came to the queer conclusion that, by the terms nonnumerical and nonmeasurable,Keynes was arguing that numbers could not be used to estimate or calculate probabilities.Ramsey then started talking about Keynes's "nonnumerical degrees of belief","mysterious logical relations",etc.Of course,Keynes,in chapter 15 of the TP on page 160("...between numerical limits";the same definition appears on p. 32.Keynes even puts the word "between" in italics to emphasize it.Ramsey had no idea of what Keynes was doing)had defined a nonnumerical probability to be an approximation that had an upper bound and a lower bound .Keynes is the founder of the interval valued estimation approach to probability. The second essay is extremely poor. The author has absolutely no understanding of the technical apparatus used by Keynes in the GT nor of what it was that Keynes accomplished.A mathematically literate reader can derive the following optimality condition from chapters 20 and 21 of the GT:w/p=mpl/(mpc+mpi),where w/p is the real (expected=realized)wage, mpl is the macroscopic marginal product of labor derived from an aggregated neoclassical production function, mpc is the marginal propensity to spend on consumption goods, and mpi is the marginal propensity to spend on investment goods.Involuntary unemployment, represented by multiple equilibria in the output market, exists if mpc+mpi <1.Only in the very special case where mpc+mpi=1 will the classical and neoclassical result, specified by Say's Law,occur. It is mathematically impossible for labor,in the aggregate,to cut their money wages in order to eliminate involuntary unemployment. In fact, the money wage must rise if mpc+mpi <1."What remains of Keynes?"the author asks. The answer can be found on p.261 of the GT and in chapters 20 and 21.The potential book buyer is advised to pass on this book and purchase a copy of Keynes's 1936 book,The General Theory of Employment,Interest and Money.

            Book Description

Multimedia, simulation, computer-mediated communication networks, and distance learning have all become part of the educational toolkit. The next major technology to change the face of education will be based on the widespread use of artificial intelligence (AI). Progress in AI has led to a deeper understanding of how to represent knowledge, to reason, and to describe procedural knowledge. Progress in cognitive science has led to a deeper understanding of how people think, solve problems, and learn. AI scientists use results from cognitive science to create software with more humanlike abilities, which can help students learn better.

This book looks at some of the results of this synergy among AI, cognitive science, and education. Examples include virtual students whose misconceptions force students to reflect on their own knowledge, intelligent tutoring systems, and speech recognition technology that helps students learn to read. Some of the systems described are already used in classrooms and have been evaluated; a few are still laboratory efforts. The book also addresses cultural and political issues involved in the deployment of new educational technologies.

E-business is more integrated with back-office systems than typical e-commerce efforts increasing customer satisfaction with faster service and lower operating costs. In addition, adopting e-business can generate new marketing opportunities, reduce time-to-market, and increase return on investment (ROI).

CTR's new report distinguishes e-commerce from e-business and discusses the differences between business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce and business-to-consumer (B2C) e-commerce. It emphasizes the role of e-business in electronifying the entire enterprise, presenting a seamless integration among company systems and with partners' and third parties' systems.

The report explains how companies can advance successfully from e-commerce to e-business and presents issues that implementers must consider in their electronification strategies.

E-business offers numerous benefits but is often accompanied by complex concerns such as security, researching supportive products and vendors, and selecting the most appropriate technologies such as programming languages. In addition to e-business' philosophical basics and related in-depth case studies, the report provides detailed information regarding e-business principles, tools, and implementation techniques.

Because e-business is a technological revolution, organizations that formulate and implement strategies today will have a considerable advantage over their competitors. Organizations that wait to develop e-business strategies may never meet the success of their predecessors. Within five years, e-business is likely to refer not to a single type of business but to all business.

This CTR report is an invaluable resource for those responsible for electronifying business practices to gain a competitive advantage.

By using untapped Latin and Turkish sources, and focusing on the trading partnership between the Genoese and the Turks, Kate Fleet demonstrates how this interaction contributed to the economic development of the early Ottoman state and to Ottoman territorial expansion. Where previous literature has emphasized the military prowess of the early Ottomans and their role as "the infidel," this book considers their economic aspirations and their integration into the economy of the Mediterranean basin. This readable, authoritative study illuminates an obscure period in early Ottoman history.

International trade was of great importance for the Ottomans in the construction of their empire. Kate Fleet's book examines the trade links which existed between European merchants and their Muslim counterparts from the beginnings of the Ottoman empire in 1300 to the fall of Constantinople in 1453. By using previously unexploited Latin and Turkish sources, and by focusing on the trading partnership between the Genoese and the Turks, she demonstrates how this interaction contributed to the economic development of the early Ottoman state and, indeed, to Ottoman territorial expansion. Where other studies have emphasised the military prowess of the early Ottoman state and its role as 'the infidel enemy', the book offers a rare insight into its economic aspirations and eventual integration into the economy of the Mediterranean basin. This is a readable, authoritative and innovative study which illuminates our understanding of an obscure period in early Ottoman history.

3 out of 5 stars Less than I hoped for, but still lots of good stuff.......2000-08-28

As more people assume control and responsibility for their careers, they'll be looking for books like this one. I approached this book with eager anticipation when I learned that Barbara Moses is the work issues columnist for Canada's national newspaper, the "Globe and Mail." An earlier work, "Career Intelligence," was a best-seller according to the author's bio at the back of this book.

While I found a lot of meat in the 226 page hardcover I read, I was disappointed in the lack of flow I expected. I suspect that the book was assembled as a collection of some of the author's columns or that chapters were written separately and perhaps intended to stand alone. For this reason, I recommend readers move through the book from cover to cover, but also expect to use the book as a reference as they return to individual chapters for guidance.

"Good News" is organized into four parts. The first section deals with The New Workplace, emphasizing Living and Working in TempWorld. Interesting theme with a lot of validity, but I didn't find "Temp World" mentioned again until almost the end of the book. Her tips for living and thriving in TempWorld make a lot of sense, including "try to define yourself in terms that are independent of your job title." Moses asserts that "effective career management means making informed choices." I would have liked to see her continue the TempWorld theme throughout the book-it would have fit nicely.

Part 2 explores The New Worker. Early in this section, Moses addresses the blurring of work and personal boundaries, illustrating this challenge with one of her many vignettes. Asking "What kind of worker are you?, she describes six different career approaches and what motivates them. I felt she could have expanded this portion more to help readers use this insight more effectively. Again, I was frustrated with the lack of depth; many topics were treated more shallowly than I hoped for.

The New Manager Section begins talking with managers and supervisors, offering them strategies to address some of the common concerns of the new worker. She talks about the old worker vs. the new worker, the manager as career coach, mentoring, and how to give people a belief in the future. In this section, Moses is clearly talking to managers, so her "voice" is much more focused than I felt in other sections. A question in my mind was about who the book was written for.

The fourth section is entitled "A New Set of Skills" and begins with encouragement to become a career activist. Other chapters on selling yourself, networking, and communicating take us back to talking with the workers directly. As she moves toward the close of her book, Moses predicts that "only when people are empowered by a belief in their own employability can they develop a more equal, rather than fear-driven, relationship to their organization." She encourages people to assume control of their careers because work plays such a crucial role in who we are.

At four different places in the book, the author used language that I feel is totally out-of-place in a business book. She may argue that such expressions are in more common usage today, but she'd be stretching the point.

5 out of 5 stars An Enlightening Read.......2000-04-29

An insightful read to help us understand the complex work world we find ourselves operating within. Great conversational style to express the concerns, joys and fears of the demographic diversity represented in many organizations. Help yourself and others to explore The New Work World!

The Good News about Careers is insightful and illuminating. It delivers on the message "take responsibility for your career" by providing concrete strategies for surviving and thriving in the new world of work.

A great read for anyone who is wants to become "a career activist" or who has a role in supporting others' career development.

"The Good News About Careers: How You'll Be Working In The Next Decade" is an excellent survey of today's workplace, packed with practical advise as to what you need to do to succeed in your career, now and in the future. Especially good are the chapters on generational conflict in the workplace, on the different types of "New Worker", and on "career-proofing your children." Dr. Moses, author of the acclaimed "Career Intelligence" has again delivered a thought-provoking and timely guide to career success.

5 out of 5 stars Good News about The Good News About Careers.......2000-04-21

Barbara Moses, Ph.D., has written an interesting to read, timely book about a topic which is close to anyone who works, lives with someone who works, or is just curious about the changing nature of work. This is a thoroughly enjoyable read. The style of writing should appeal to anyone, from those thinking about retiring soon, to those just entering the workforce. For managers who want to keep the status quo, this could be a potentially dangerous read for your employees. It could cause people to rethink their lives, and possibly leave their current position for a new one. I highly recommend this book for anyone considering a career change or who is just trying to know themselves a little (or a lot) better. JoEllen Morrison, MLS

The time that Jesus lived on this earth was a time of social injustice, extreme poverty, religious persecution and military occupation. Jesus came with a new message, a new promise, something that had never been heard before. Contemporary photos and contemporary issues help this book relate the words of Jesus at the Sermon on the Mount to our lives today. Do you wonder who He was talking to 2000 years ago? He was talking to you.

5 out of 5 stars Well written and timely observations!.......2004-11-23

You can read this book in one sitting, or you can sit back and enjoy it chapter by chapter and thus take in and relish Marc's meaningful, well-written observations per marketing and promotions. He has a great ability to describe how his hints and ideas are beneficial to all people, not just to those marketing products, and thus his book should be enjoyable and fun for everyone. I recommend you read it as I did, chapter by chapter, btw....

                                                Book Description

Taylorism was criticized for its over-simplistic view of what motivated the worker. Oliver Sheldon's theme was that though Taylorism had helped the development of a science of management, such work should not detract from the predominantly human job of the manager to manage. His work prefigures the human relations approach to management theory of Elton Mayo and F. J. Roethlisberger in rejecting the notion that economic incentives largely explain employee behavior.
