    Book Description

This book provides a state-of-the-art analysis of some of the key issues facing the European Union on the (potentially rocky) road towards monetary union and enlargement. After addressing general questions concerning the deepening and widening of European integration, the authors discuss theoretical and empirical analyses of the implementation and feasibility of EMU. They also consider convergence and development within the European Union, and the lessons to be learnt from the Nordic enlargement, as well as the experience of the Southern periphery. They conclude that while the economic dimension is important, the development of European Monetary Union will also be highly dependent on internal political developments and inter-member bargaining. This book will be welcomed by practitioners, academics and students interested in economic integration, international economics, political science and international business.

    Book Description

88 Great MBA Application Tips and Strategies is a "pure" MBA application book. It is a compilation of real-life application strategies and a distillation of hundreds of hours of one-on-one personal tutoring sessions with prospective MBA students. In not only offers an insider's guide to the MBA admissions process, as opposed to a factual description of MBA programs, but also supplies a distinctive admissions philosophy. Although the book addresses all seven MBA application components, the content is weighted heavily toward the writing of admissions essays. This is the only book with a complete range of sample documents including admissions essays, resumes, employment records, letters of recommendation, interview evaluation forms, and extracurricular presentations. For applicants planning to maximize their international experience, this manual contains a goldmine of sample documents written by candidates applying from North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Obtain this book and gain an insider's understanding of all MBA application components including:

    - Evaluating your GMAT score relative to Grade Point Average

    - Writing compelling admissions essays

    - Presenting a powerful employment record

    - Obtaining detailed letters of recommendation

    - Maximizing your ability to answer tough interview questions

    - Personalizing your record of extracurricular involvement

5 out of 5 stars Do you want to be admitted by a top school?.......2004-09-17

Then you must buy this book. This book is does not contain general information that you can find in school websites or online publications such as business weekly. It is designed for applicants who already know what schools they want. It focuses on the application process itself. For this reason, it is more concise and more thorough than other b-school books, despite it's small volume (250 pages).

I have also purchased "How to get into the top MBA programs" and "Your MBA Game Plan". While these other books are helpful, the "88 Tips" is better because it discusses several things that are not found in the other books:

First, a chpater on Resume or Employment Record. This chapter contains tips to fill out the Employment Record portion of the application. Believe me, there is much more to it than just filling in the blanks. Here is one tip from the book: "Add 'employment summaries' to explain what you found significant about each of your work experiences." By adding just a few sentence of summary, you significantly enhances your record.

Second, a chapter on "Presenting you extracurricular Activities/Awards and Recognition/Community Service". Again, it is not a simple matter of listing dates and the activities. You need to elaborate on what it means to you and what you learned.

Third, a chapter on the overall packaging of you MBA essays and application. The effort you put into your package is evident to the adComs, and it shows your seriousness. The quality of your packaging is extremely important. Read this chapter and find some tips.

Again, all these information are not found in any other books I bought. The other books are helpful, but this book is a must.

5 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but it's the best out there.......2004-02-22

I think it would be impossible to find a book about the MBA admission process that satisfies every single MBA candidate. Each candidate has his or her own strengths. Maybe, you are good in math, or have a superb writing. Furthermore, maybe you know someone, an MBA student or graduate, who has already provided you with important insights. But stop for a moment, think about the hundreds of candidates, especially international, who are not as lucky as you are, and who don't have access to valuable MBA admission insights. Do you think they are less capable ? Do you think it would be fair to compete with them for a seat at Wharton or any other top school ?

This book is the best single MBA admission resource available for ALL MBA candidates in the world. Mr Royal will make the MBA admission process a fair game.

2 out of 5 stars Mostly Just Common Sense.......2003-12-30

I've read this book and the previous version. While none of the advice is wrong or bad, I didn't feel like any of it was earth-shattering, either. Most of what's in here is common sense to someone who has a decent shot of getting into a top business school. It's a catchy title, and you may pick up a few tidibits, but I've found other books to be more useful. Also, this version is longer than the previous one, but the additional content doesn't seem to justify the high price.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Deserves Six Stars.......2003-11-15

For those serious about getting into a top MBA program, this book is GOLD.

This writer provides terrific information and treats the reader as a partner. Most books of this type are so general that the practical utility is lessened. In this book, the topics that count are all there, and handled with detail and in many cases brilliantly. The writer uses humor to help you remember his points. An example from the chapter on resumes: "You know your resume is ready when your mother looks at it and can't recognize who it is." Buy this book and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars If you're going to buy one book for the MBA process..........2003-11-15

This book is one of the best publications I've read on the MBA applications process. The author makes sure to use examples of the "dos" and "donts" of MBA applications. Moreover, his examples regarding essays and recommendation letters are excellent. They really show the difference between having an okay essay and the excellent essay that will make your application stand out.

All in all, this book has proven to be an extremely useful tool to get through a long and difficult process. It gets rid of the myth of "I'll work it out as I go along" for graduate business school applications.

        Book Description

In the industrialized world, it is widely accepted that a free market leads to greater efficiency in terms of productivity and cost. But how can competition be introduced into situations where for example alternative suppliers cannot be used? Benchmarking provides an effective substitute for competition. Benchmarking
is a continuous, systematic process for comparing your own efficiency in terms of productivity, quality and practices with those companies and organizations
that represent excellence. It has been demonstrated to have a profound effect in numerous situations where conditions of a `planned economy' exist.

Benchmarking: A Signpost to Excellence in Quality and Productivity explains the concept of efficiency and how benchmarking can be utilized to improve performance. The authors identify three categories of benchmarking:
Internal: between units of an organization
        External: between competitors
Functional: equivalent operations in different organizations

To set up your own project, the book provides a step-by-step guide through the
        following essential stages:
        Deciding what to benchmark
        Identifying benchmarking partners
        Gathering and analyzing information
        Implementing for effect

This is a must have book for any organization embarking on the Benchmarking process.

                    Book Description

On-line branding--brand marketing on the Internet--is now the biggest challenge facing most marketers. Branding.com reveals why branding is the most important element in any marketing plan and why it must be uniquely executed in each medium--including on the Internet--in order to be successful. For companies extending their branding efforts onto the Internet, as well as for web entrepreneurs who are looking to brand a product or service exclusively on-line, Branding.com explores the basics of on-line brand marketing and shows how to plan and execute a successful on-line branding strategy and how to develop a "next generation media mix" to leverage both on-line and off-line marketing media in promoting a brand.

So much for the impact of online marketing and branding, most of the companies in the book are out of business just 5 years later.

5 out of 5 stars Very organized and well thought out........2001-07-09

As a business consultant and former internet executive , I found Branding.com to be well organized and well thought out. It presents the basics of internet branding and marketing in a manner that marketing managers, as well as non-marketing managers and executives, can utilize effectively. In addition to providing the basics, it does provide a variety of strategic directions that can help all firms that are interested in establishing their on-line brand. Overall, I'd rate this book as one that any manager involved with internet commerce should have on their bookshelf!

3 out of 5 stars Too General, Just another On-line Branding Book.......2001-06-27

This book focused too much on "on-line banner". It also covered sucessful on-line brand which we are just too familiar. There isn't much effort in providing other example. The book appear to be more like a report for reader to understand what is happening on the interent today, rather than providing useful insight for reader to use in the near future. The tag line of "On-line Branding for Marketing Success" does not seem to fit.

It's good for readers who is not familiar with on-line marketing as this book offers very basic information. This is just another book about Branding via Internet.

                      Book Description

Entrepreneurial Competition and Industrial Location explores the notion of entrepreneurial competition from its theoretical foundations in early Austrian and contemporary evolutionary economics. Focusing on the structural development of the intangible factors of production such as labor skills, advertising and research and development, the book's empirical implications are tested in a comparative study of competitive performance in the EU, Japan and the US. Typical mechanisms of external spillovers, shaping industrial location by means of Marshallian cluster formation, highlight the dimension of industrial location.

Peneder finally employs the three evolutionary principles of variation, cumulation and selection to establish entrepreneurship, learning and fair markets as the main pillars of modern competitiveness policy. This volume paves the way for a better understanding of the market process, demonstrating the importance of intangible factors as sources of competitive advantage both by conclusive theoretical argument and careful empirical investigation.

                      Book Description

"If you want to create an enthusiastic, committed, high-performance workforce today, think democratic. Think equal. Think 'everyone's as important as I am. 'Think ping-pong tables, company picnics, and bagels for everybody. And don't keep secrets!"

-from The Human Side of High-Tech

Imagine being at a company where the workforce actually views work and fun as synonymous. A company that resembles a playground for gifted children and creates an atmosphere to generate free-flowing ideas. One that provides instant backrubs for overstressed workers and gourmet food for lunch in the office cafeteria. Welcome to the billion-dollar high-tech industry! Silicon Valley forever changed the way the high-tech industry is structured. These companies challenged conventional wisdom to find new and innovative ways to attract and retain talented employees. From the fitness center, on-site car wash, and cleaning services of Cisco Systems to an entire company vacation in Tahoe with PeopleSoft, the focus is placed on making the worker feel like a valuable member of a team. To uncover how the technology sector maximizes human potential, Carol Kinsey Goman combines extensive field research and interviews with her fifteen years of experience as a corporate consultant on change-management and leadership. Gathering information from today's leading high-tech CEOs, corporate communicators, human resource professionals, managers, and employees, this book offers a valuable look at the people practices that are effective even in this volatile industry. These leaders have developed highly successful strategies that keep gifted employees happy so the ideas and dollars keep flowing! The Human Side of High-Tech also reveals how the culture behind Silicon Valley's astonishing success can be applied to any business. These lessons will help organizations develop the policies necessary to hire the best talent available, lower the turnover rate, and find new ways to sustain cutting-edge competitiveness in the worldwide infotech arena. Ranging from the methodical to the quirky, these approaches will lead to increased employee satisfaction and productivity.

The organizations featured in this book realize that corporate success and the care for the total individual are inextricable in the high-tech corporate philosophy. Their innovative practices can be applied to any business in the areas of recruitment, retention, communication, motivation, and leadership of talented employees.

Presenting a whole new idea about people, life, and work, The Human Side of High-Tech provides the tools to create an extremely effective management model for businesses all over the world. Carol Kinsey Goman, PhD, (Berkeley, CA), is an internationally recognized expert on the human side of organizational change. As President of Kinsey Consulting Services, Goman designs organizational transformation strategies, coaches senior managers on ways to increase their effectiveness as leaders of change, and delivers over 100 speeches a year at international and corporate conferences. She has been cited as an authority in media such as Industry Week, Investor's Business Daily, CNN, and NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw.

Praise for The Human Side of High-Tech

"The Human Side of High-Tech focuses on the single most critical issue for high-tech organizations today: attracting and retaining the talent that is at the core of a company's competitive advantage. Quantum's pursuit of 'extraordinary environment' has made us the first and only data storage company to appear on Fortune's '100 Best Places to Work' list and, even more importantly, has helped us cultivate the talent that has positioned Quantum as the leader in four of the six storage markets we serve."

-Michael Brown, Chairman and CEO, Quantum Corp.

"The Human Side of High-Tech isn't just for leaders of technology companies. This is a book for all managers looking to attract and retain the best and brightest in a new generation of workers."

-Robert L. Dilenschneider, CEO, The Dilenschneider Group

5 out of 5 stars The Early Stages of an Experiment.......2000-01-18

There are several reasons why I rate this book so highly. Here are three: Goman provides an in-depth analysis of HOW various high-tech companies are creating a decisive competitive advantage for themselves by attracting and keeping superior talent; she explains HOW virtually all other organizations (including companies) can do so also; finally, she explains why companies such as Lotus, Cisco Systems, Autodesk, i2 Technologies, and PeopleSoft are "still in the process of evolving." Their individual efforts merely comprise a "beginning." She concludes that "...each company, with each experiment it undertakes, adds another building block lesson learned to the collective evolutionary process." It is commendable for Goman to provide so much valuable information and commentary. It is also commendable that she includes a caution that, in the immortal words of Paul Williams, "We've only just begun."

Various "lessons" to be learned from "the technology frontier" are carefully organized and then developed. In Chapter 1, for example, Goman lists what she calls "The Eight Commandments of High-Tech Culture": 1. Egalitarianism, 2. Freedom, 3. Informality, 4. Trust, 5. Responsibility, 6. Teamwork, 7. High Performance, and 8. Fun. The challenge is to optimize all eight in the most appropriate balance. She concludes the chapter with the first of several lists of Lessons" which will inform efforts to meet that challenge.

For me, one of the most valuable chapters is Chapter 6: "Thriving on Change, Complexity, and Chaos." In it, Goman analyzes how and why several companies have succeeded amidst the "extreme volatility" of continuous restructuring by accepting "constant adaptation to new situations as a fundamental of survival and prosperity." At the end of this chapter, Goman provides another series of "Lessons" which are eminently sensible.

Goman agrees with Debra Engel (former head of HR at 3Com) that it took four hundred years for business organizations to operate successfully in the Industrial Age. "We are only beginning to understand how to operate in the "Information Age." In essence, that is the challenge which Goman's brilliant book addresses with eloquence as well as insight. I agree with her that "organizations don't change. People do -- or they don't." If all this seems relevant to you, I urge you to buy this book, read it carefully, and then review (at least every month or two) the various lists of "Lessons." If you are determined to be a change agent in your own organization and it refuses to support your efforts, I presume to suggest that you find another which will.

4 out of 5 stars The Human Side of Technology.......2003-07-22

The human side of technology is crucial but has not received the dedicated attention it warrants. The field has been dominated by the "under the hood" types who are comfortable with the technology, and assume everyone else is as well. However the people who use the technology for business advantage are the "above the hood" types who require ease of use. This publication focuses on the all important human side. It's about time!

The expanding use of technology has dramatically changed the way business is conducted. IT has been democratized with an estimate excess of 1 billion humans connected on-line to the Internet. It is a startling figure when you consider there are 5.6 billion people on our planet. This book focuses on the factors that enable sound connectivity to our growing on-line community.

As computers and the software that drives them grow more powerful, they are also growing too complex for many of the IT customers to use. This book emphasizes that using Information Technology should help people accomplish tasks and not be a task in itself.
