      Book Description

`Sarno and Taylor have created a book that is sure to be in the library of all serious scholars of exchange rates. The authors are to be commended for distilling such a fine collection of major works from the voluminous literature on the subject.'

      - Michael Melvin, Arizona State University

The last two decades have seen a number of important developments in exchange rate economics, with substantial contributions to both its theory and empirics. While our understanding of exchange rates has significantly improved, a number of challenges and open questions in the exchange rate debate still remain. In these two volumes, the editors have brought together a selection of key articles which are representative of recent developments in the exchange rate economics literature. This important collection is essential for academic economists and practitioners interested in understanding and participating in the exchange rate debate.

                Book Description

In this ground-breaking analysis of the world's first private banks, Edward Cohen convincingly demonstrates the existence and functioning of a market economy in ancient Athens while revising our understanding of the society itself. Challenging the "primitivistic" view, in which bankers are merely pawnbrokers and money-changers, Cohen reveals that fourth-century Athenian bankers pursued sophisticated transactions. These dealings--although technologically far removed from modern procedures--were in financial essence identical with the lending and deposit-taking that separate true "banks" from other businesses. He further explores how the Athenian banks facilitated tax and creditor avoidance among the wealthy, and how women and slaves played important roles in these family businesses--thereby gaining legal rights entirely unexpected in a society supposedly dominated by an elite of male citizens.

Special emphasis is placed on the reflection of Athenian cognitive patterns in financial practices. Cohen shows how transactions were affected by the complementary opposites embedded in the very structure of Athenian language and thought. In turn, his analysis offers great insight into daily Athenian reality and cultural organization.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful study of a neglected topic.......1998-07-24

This book examines the extremely scarce references to banking in the Athenian world. The author argues that a form of deposit banking did exist and was deeply involved in both real estate (landed loans) and commerce (maritime loans). He puts this in the context of the social practices and customs of Athens (4th c. BC, after the Peloponnesian war). Marriage, slavery, and property ownership are among the issues looked at in close detail. The author succeeds in establishing the existence of a banking industry in Athens. It is clear that this extremely sophisticated society (in all respects) *also* had sophisticated credit mechanisms. It is difficult to say to what extent the existence of a developed credit industry must alter our concept of the Athenian economy to make it "more capitalist." But here we have at least a compelling basis for arguing that the existence of highly developed commerce must entail as well the existence of credit mechanisms. The! discussion of the Athenian banking practice of using slaves as key bank officers, and then taking the foremost slave and marrying him to the widow of the bank owner upon his death, is a fascinating look at the complexity of the oikos and legal context of immigrants and slaves in the Athenian economy.

This is a first rate piece of scholarship. Even if your interest in ancient Athens is primarily literary/philosophical, you should be familiar with this book. In addition to specialized legal documents and abundant reference to scholarly work on the Athenian economic system, the author makes use of well-known sources such as Plato and Aristotle. It is a tour de force. The author (Cohen) has a Ph.D. from Princeton in classics and also is a principal in a pennsylvania bank.

Every trainer should have a copy, reference it frequently, and utilize the content themselves to manage conflict that sometime occurs during training.

5 out of 5 stars "The Conflict Management Skills Workshop".......2002-03-03

This book is an incredible resource for corporate trainers and college instructors! I was able to use the activities in this workbook with my traditional classes, as well as my adult learners in factory and union settings. Students learn better with hands-on activities and through the use of antecdotel stories they can remember. This book combines both to make for a fruitful learning experience. We have long needed a resource of this caliber that takes theory and really shows us how to put it into practice. I will be waiting for more titles from this author.

5 out of 5 stars One of my most-recommended titles for senior project managers.......2006-07-25

I have found this book to be a wonderful mix of practical advice and academic research. The authors not only give useful advice about how to talk to senior executives (avoid hype and emotion, emphasize concrete processes and concepts like the iron triangle), but they back it all up with solid research into books about sales and actual people who have successfully sold project management to senior executives.

The research is even divided on useful lines, showing key differences between the process of selling project management as an employee and as an outside consultant. Different types of arguments work better depending on your role.

For any senior project manager, who is trying to get enterprise-wide adoption of project management, this book is a must-read. Parts of it are academic, but the practical advice is clearly marked and put into separate chapters. These practical tips will save time and frustration when attempting to pitch to a senior executive.

                5 out of 5 stars Wonderful research.......2004-04-28

I respectfully disagree with the two reviews posted. This was academic based research and provides information to those of us looking for the next steps in project management. Academic research does not provide the silver bullet that is so desperately wanted. However, it provides the background and sound grounding that allows senior project managers to develop new practical applications based on supportable research. A must read for those who are beyond the nuts and bolts of project management theory.

1 out of 5 stars Still left searching.......2003-12-11

I bought this book because I am searching for the answer to "why is it so difficult to get decision-makers to understand the value of professional project management?"

What I got was an unorganized long-winded thesis; chock full of repetitious statements, surveys and references; leaving the reader to draw their own conclusions.

My opinion, this book is nothing more than an overpriced "tease" to a very important topic. If there was ever a book and topic that needed a sequel, this is it!

1 out of 5 stars Overpriced waste of money.......2003-05-10

This reads like a PhD thesis. Woefully short on understandable and useable detail but chock full of references and long-winded explanations of their research methodology. General texts on selling to senior management will give you better information at a much more reasonable price.

Recently, we have seen England's venerable Queen Elizabeth I portrayed in popular movies as both a wise supporting character and powerful leading lady. Now, thanks to historian and author Alan Axelrod, we can not only see the 16th-century monarch as a single woman who turned the fortunes of an entire nation around--we can apply many of the traits and practices of Good Queen Bess to our own business lives. "You can learn that being a leader is being a leader, whether your enterprise is a Renaissance kingdom, a small business, a major corporation, a corporate department, or a three-person work group with a job to do," Axelrod writes in Elizabeth I, CEO. Like other authors who relate the conduct and writings of a historical figure to situations in the modern world (including himself in Patton on Leadership), Axelrod uses Elizabeth's behavior and words to frame a blueprint for corporate survival, personal image building, staff development, control, and--ultimately--success. The author draws 136 pointers from Elzabeth's life, each amplified with lively, germane anecdotes. Among them: "Control the Message, not the Messenger," "No Leader Is a Solo Act," and "Forgive, but Don't Forget." --Howard Rothman

                  Book Description

Last year, Alan Axelrod used General George S. Patton's WW II experiences as the basis for his national bestseller Patton on Leadership. This year, Dr. Axelrod turns to one of history's greatest rulers, and greatest women, for a fresh look at the always-compelling topic of how to lead people to extraordinary achievement. Elizabeth I, CEO: Strategic Lessons in Leadership from the Woman Who Built an Empire reveals how the embattled monarch overcame daunting obstacles to win intense loyalty and lead England to greatness. Elizabeth I, CEO will attract the leaders of today, the builders of contemporary empires, as well as history-lovers. The life of Elizabeth has much to say to those beginning their climb up the corporate ladder as well those who, having attained the top rung, do not want to slip from it. The queen's long reign offers lessons on: Developing a leadership attitude and image, enhanced by personal dynamism Becoming an effective coach and mentor, skilled at nurturing creativity Manipulating others--subtly and ethically Knowing and anticipating the "enemy" Setting clear goals and motivating others to work to achieve them Most of all, the career of Elizabeth I is an example of vision, of creating vision, of communicating vision, and of realizing vision. Not only did she create loyalty among those nearest her, she met headlong an array of the most daunting challenges any leader has ever faced.

How did Elizabeth meet these challenges, managing not only to stay alive and to keep her imperiled nation afloat, but also to win the intense loyalty of her people and to lead England to greatness? Historians and biographers have offered many explanations. Elizabeth, CEO takes a fresh view, exploring issues that are relevant to leaders--especially business leaders--of today.

4 out of 5 stars A very good retrofit strategy..........2006-08-18

While I don't believe that Elizabeth was totally the excellent strategizer, I do believe she was well advised and did her own thinking. This book goes back and imposing upon historical events the decisions made by Elizabeth-I and how it would apply in business today. There are certain parallels between a monarchy and corporation that do fit together and can be seen in examples. The major portion of the book covers the image that Elizabeth set forth by taking on being the image of the Mother Mary (Catholic church) to her subjects, thus, to make the people more accepting of the new Church of England as the religious seat of power, thus diffusing the Vatican's hold over the people. My only complaint, like others opinions, there were no mention of where things went wrong, only highlighting the good things. This is a very good book still and I recommend it along with another book called Big Chief Elizabeth (which is more of the history of the new World and Elizabeth's funding of the voyages to capture more land).

3 out of 5 stars Before Thatcher there was Elizabeth the First.......2006-04-16

It was a woman who gave birth to the British Empire where the sun (son) never set on England's territory. None other than the Virgin Queen herself, who bore no heir, but lived to a very ripe old age. In her time, Elizabeth turned around her country from bankruptcy and discord. The book takes snippets from her life and there are some gems of wisdom from Elizabeth's reign. Like her father, Henry VIII, Queen Elizabeth the First lived large and had the courage to be powerful, was an orphaned Princess who ascended to the throne and a nation in tatters ... and whose life was a testament that resulted in Rule Britannia until the last colony, Hong Kong, was relinquished in 1997.

But if you really need lessons from a Monarch: read Margaret Thatcher's own words on her ascent. First hand knowledge is the most useful.

                  5 out of 5 stars Wow Elizabeth.......2004-11-15

Elizabeth I CEO was a wonderful reading that inspired me a lot. It is one of those books that you hate to leave unfinished. The lessons of Elizabeths leadership are compelling and quite inspiring.

I never thought that I would need a book on inspiration in my life, but this book indeed changed this view as well.

                  Excellent work.

                  5 out of 5 stars in a response..........2004-11-03

I do have a comment on history content, in response to one of other reviews I read -let's keep in mind that, if it wasn't for Elizabeth I there would be no empire to pass along to James I-England would be swallowed up by either France or Spain. Surely, Elizabeth I made a few mistakes like every other monarch, but they fade out in comparison to her achievements. She truly did build an empire, and serves as a great example of a true leader.

1 out of 5 stars Poor rendition of history leads to not-so-useful conclusions.......2004-03-09

This book is a follow-up to Axelrod's book on leadership lessons for executives drawn from the example of George S. Patton. Here, he's picked another historical figure, Queen Elizabeth I of England. This had the makings of a potentially valuable book, save for the slight problem that the history is so poorly rendered that little of value can be gleaned for anyone facing the unrelenting pressures of running an actual business.

Axelrod portrays the Elizabethan period with such rose-coloured glasses that he fails to impart a useful or realistic message here. The book has numerous references to the queen's fiscal management of the country, to the Spanish Armada, to the outpouring of literature of Shakespeare and his fellow masters of the pen, with little bits of wisdom relayed in the process. All well and good.

But in recognising and deriving lessons from the queen's many undoubted successes, he should have been balanced and also discussed where things went wrong. There is scant if any attention paid to Elizabeth's policy in Ireland, which had a particularly bloody legacy and in which England's undertakings gave rise to failure at every turn from the 1570s onward. The consequences of this policy failure are still with us today. Nor is there mention of England's military defeats against Spain after the Armada, which devastated English plans to settle the new world and gain control of trade routes. Nor does Axelrod note the cases of financial mismanagement and corruption that plagued Elizabeth's reign in the late 1500s. And where is this empire he talks about in the book's title, "the leader who built an empire"? Axelrod skips the specifics on this because there was no empire by the time King James I succeeded Elizabeth in the early 1600s. England would not have an empire to speak of for another 150 years.

There is nothing wrong or unexpected about these setbacks in Elizabeth's reign-- she had many successes and, like any monarch, some missteps as well. If one wishes to use such a monarch as an example for a business, it is a disservice to readers to trumpet the successes while ignoring the failures. What business, after all, turns in profitable quarters with every fiscal year and pleases its investors and even competitors with its every move? You'd be hard-pressed to find any such firm gracing the pages of the Wall Street Journal. Real businesses learn from their failures as much as their successes, and Axelrod has denied his readers a valuable example by focussing too much on the latter and too little on the former. This book would be more valuable with a little more depth and a little more perspective in its treatment of its historical subject.
