3 out of 5 stars I was looking for more of 'Here's how it worked in this classroom'.......2007-07-31

There are many strategies for variations of the same work in this book, like different vocabulary activities or some good reading strategies minilessons. I wanted more of a structure for a classroom - like take the top 10% from the pretest and go this route with them, then with the next group ... But that was not the layout of this book.
This book would be great for a content area teacher that has not taken an indepth reading (for information or in the content area) class at some point in their career. Possibly a beginning teacher in a secondary content area would benefit most from this.

      Book Description

The management and processing of uncertain information has shown itself to be a crucial issue in the development of intelligent systems, beginning withits appearance in the such systems as Mycin and Prospector. The papers in this volume reflect the current range of interests or researchers in thefield. Currently, the major approaches to uncertainty include fuzzy set theory, probabilistic methods, mathematical theory of evidence, non-standardlogics such as default reasoning, and possibility theory. The initial part of the volume is devoted to papers dealing with the foundations of these approaches, where recent attempts have been made to develop systems combining multiple approaches. A significant part of the book looks at the management of uncertainty in a number of the paradigmatic domainsof intelligent systems such as expert systems, decision making, databases, image processing, and reasoning networks. The papers are extended versions of presentations at the third international conference on information processing and management of uncertainty in knowledge-based systems. The proceedings of the two preceding IPMU conferences appear as LNCS 286 and LNCS 313.

          Book Description

The age of co-located teams is dead. Instead of working with the people down the hall, we now work with people whose locations span the globe. To achieve real success, companies can't just plug into the new technology. They must learn how to collaborate effectively when people are not in one place. They must create fast, cohesive, Bionic eTeamwork from afar-the next wave of virtual teamwork. Armed with new technology and new methods, eTeams allow companies to break the speed of light.

One of the world's leading experts on virtual teamwork, Jaclyn Kostner, takes readers step-by-step through the process of creating fast, effective, Bionic eTeams that use technology's power to extend their human capability and touch. Kostner notes: "Being on the same e-mail system doesn't make a team. People make a team. Communication makes a team. Trust makes a team." In BIONIC eTeamwork, Kostner includes best practices from SAS Airlines, Dow Chemical, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, and more.

BIONIC eTeamwork teaches: the three-step evolution to bionic eteamwork; four key ways to transition your team quickly to bionic eteamwork; best practices for creating trust in teams that communicate virtually; moments of truth to enhance a leader's power to guide behavior from afar; three kinds of emotion that build a sense of team, even from across the globe.

5 out of 5 stars bionic teamwork puts heart into technology.......2001-11-03

Bionic eTeamwork carves new ground for me. Dr. Kostner has proven herself knowledgeable and well connected, given the array of businesses who have shared their stories with her. Her access to how teams in the virtual age have succeeded is very useful.

Her main point is: technology without the human element can never reach its potential. But if we merge human priorities with technology, you can achieve the "super" leverage of the bionic. Not all of us will be Steve Austins, obviously, but we can certainly use this book to make our team collaborations much more effective -- faster.

Another significant point is the challenge of speed - how can distance teams work as fast as teams sitting within the same conference room? Dr. Kostner shows how distance teams can achieve at least the same speed of decision making and collaboration as on site groups - and may even work with greater productivity.

Dr. Kostner's style is well paced - she gives down to earth, doable guidance. This is a must read for leaders and team contributors who are looking to up their own ante in terms of their collaboration and team effectiveness.

5 out of 5 stars We have the technology.......2001-10-10

Dr. Kostner latest book, Bionic eTeamwork is much different from her last one, Knights of a Teleround Table. In the last one she wrote a business novel about King Arthur mentoring someone across time on virtual teams. A quick and entertaining read, it delivered a good message, but lacked the practical application I look for.

In her new book, Bionic eTeamwork, she has abandoned the business novel and gone to telling stories of successful eteams that have really achieved extraordinary results. Her theme is similar (the importance of the human element), but she seems a lot more inclusive of the technology. As she states at the beginning "we have the technology" ala Steve Austin and she goes on to tell us we need to humanize the way we use it.

I'm more of a left brained person so let me tell you what I really like about this book. Whenever I go through a business book I like to highlight it and then I pull all the highlights out and type them out for later review (sort of my own cliffnotes). Almost every page has a a sentence or two of an important statement on the margin in a grey box. Basically she has done it for me. Just by reading this you get the jist of what the message is and after you've read the book, you've got a quick review.

The message is still keep the humanity going, but she has added some features I really found useful. Almost every chapter has one or more summaries entitled "Things you can do today to..." or "eteamwork Checklist." From these we get such suggestions as "Designate a technology champion" to "stop trying to collaborate by e-mail with attachments. Those methods are in the Dark Ages. Get up to speed with Adobe Acrobat Exchange." In summary, you have a quick easy read with a lot of practical advice.

            Book Description

Austria played a prominent role in the worldwide events of 1931 as the largest bank in Central and Eastern Europe, the Viennese Credit-Anstalt, collapsed and led Europe into a financial panic that spread to other parts of the world. The events in Austria were pivotal to the economic developments of the 1930s, yet the literature about them is sparse. This book tries to fill this gap. Aurel Schubert analyzes the crisis using the leading theories of financial crises, identifies the causes of the crisis, examines the market's efficiency in predicting events, analyzes how the crisis was transmitted to the real sector, and studies the behavior of the Austrian as well as international authorities as lenders of last resort. His main conclusion is that even sixty years after the crisis, many of its lessons are still valid. Managerial and regulatory deficiencies led to the collapse of the bank; the subsequent currency crisis was not an irrational and unexplainable panic by a confused public, but rather a rational response to inconsistencies in policy; and the reactions of the largely unprepared authorities--in Austria as well as abroad--did not help in resolving the crisis quickly.

                Book Description

After reading the newspapers and following the sharp oscillations of the stock market, it becomes apparent that hi-tech companies are of a different breed. Never before have the chances of making a fortune been so realistic and never before have large companies been so fragile. What is really going on inside these hi-tech companies? What types of pressures and challenges are they facing? And how do they cope?

Computer software providers, especially the ones that specialize in handling the data needs of organizations, are prime examples of these volatile companies. In the nineties we witnessed their growth from small businesses into multi-billion dollar giants. No wonder investors were attracted.

In 1998 it was easy for such companies to raise as much money as they wanted. But now, investment funds have dried up. Why? And more importantly, is there a way to reverse the trend? This book gives the answers.

                2 out of 5 stars 99% Novel, 1% TOC.......2005-05-17

Necessary But Not Sufficient can be boiled down to three points:

                1. Technology is worthless if it doesn't bring bottom-line value.
                2. "Drum-buffer-rope" and "Buffer Management" are good
                3. "Pull" inventory management is good

As an rabid reader and huge fan of The Goal, I was dissapointed with the delivery of this book. The fictional plot was boring and the characters were met with absolute apathy. While the above three points are repeated ad nauseum, no real background or detail is revealed on their delivery or use. Instead, Necessary But Not Sufficient is written as lengthy pieces of plot followed by short, almost textbook definitions of these business concepts.

If you're looking for a more interesting and in-depth read, stick with The Goal. Otherwise, shop around for a more engaging and insightful book.

2 out of 5 stars Worst of the TOC Novels.......2004-02-24

This book has very little new material from previous TOC books. It doesn't lead the reader as well as The Goal or It's Not Luck. In short it is a "Rah-Rah" book telling the reader how great TOC is without giving much detail and in the context of a novel that doesn't create a great amount of character sympathy. I really don't understand how a man as brilliant as Goldratt could have written this. Get The Goal, It's Not Luck, and the appropriate textbook(s) to implement TOC in your business.

                1 out of 5 stars Student's point of View.......2004-02-14

I'm a student at Tec de Monterrey, in Mexico City. I've been assigned to read The Goal, it wasn't luck and this necessary but not suficient. I have to say that when i read the goald and it's second part i really loved the book. I was introduced to this concepts like DBR and inventory management. While i was reading necessary... i thought, this is by far the worst book written by this author (also read the race).

As a novel there's nothing exciting about it, is not that the other's had me in the edge of my chair, but at least there u could feel the threat was bigger, closing the factory and selling three of them.

And here trying to use TOC and DBD in the technology environment just doesn't work. U could see where the book was going to end, probably cause we are living in that time where u have to make the future.

                5 out of 5 stars Absolutely necessary.......2003-01-09

This book is a journey of about a year and a quarter into the ERP market through the eyes of a hypothetical company BGSoft and its implementation partner KPI Solutions. Scott the CEO of BGSoft is a visionary who delivers business results for his clients through his ERP software. Lenny the head of Development, Gail his marketing chief and Maggie of KPI are the other key players in this novel.

Like any other technology company BGSoft faces the uphill task of growing 40 % every year if it has to keep the analysts happy and retain its stock price. It is a key player in the ERP market and its customers are primarily Fortune 1000 companies who can afford the investments and fuel the growth that BGSoft is aiming at. Suddenly Scott realizes that most of the big companies have already adopted ERP and their next best bet is to look for mid size companies. If there are no more deer left in the forest then one has to go after the rabbits. Hunting for rabbits needs the same effort and results in lesser meat per win. Can BGSoff continue to grow at the same rate?

Now there is an unusual call from Craig, CEO of Pierco one of BGSoft's largest customers. Thanks to a new Director, his Board has asked him to justify the investment that he has made in ERP. Call it by whatever name or any flavor of the latest technology jargon, the Board wants to know the impact on two important measures - top line and bottom line. The story now takes a very interesting turn, turning away from the routine issues of features, schedules, budgets, bugs, staffing and project management that are characteristic of any ERP company. The primary issue then becomes delivering true business value that customers can get from IT solutions rather than implementing software from leading vendors on fancy technologies.

Once again, it is worthwhile to mention - Top line and Bottom line - what comes in from the customers and what is retained for the shareholders. Get this right or get out of here is the message for all CEOs. BGSoft now sees a paradigm shift - they need to sell value and not just software.

ERP implementations are typically seen as automating data flow across different functions in an organization. True, it enables to break walls within but sadly the rules of the game continue to remain unchanged, defeating the purpose of better information flow. Technology is necessary, but not sufficient is the core theme of this book.

In the process of helping Craig to find justification for his investment in BGSoft' ERP, we get a deep inside view of Pierco's operations. Excess inventory, production bottlenecks and plenty of infighting between functions who are expected to work towards common goals. Performance measures continue to aim at locally optimal solutions ignoring the final impact on customer service.

Scott is quick to introduce the concepts of TOC- Drum-Buffer Rope method and Buffer management in Pierco. This releases forty percent capacity but causes an unexpected problem- plenty of inventory. TOC concept is then extended to distribution and soon across the entire operations of Pierco. Inventory is kept close to the plant and shipments to warehouses are based on replenishment of actual sales. The entire process shifts from "Push" to "Pull". The results are dramatic. Craig is celebrating!

Craig calls on Scott and Maggie with a proposal to extend the solution to all his vendors and clients. Internet technologies would help. He is keen to focus on his business and not worry about software, hardware, upgrades and the hassles of the IT function. If KPI could help him, he is willing to part with half a percent of his revenues for the services to begin with and then it would jump to one percent a year.

Focus on results for the business, and keep the software simple. Do not allow the tendency of adding feature after feature to complicate the ERP. Extend the solution across the entire supply chain to service the end customer as one logical entity. The top line and bottom line would head north, is a very clear message from this book.

1 out of 5 stars The plot is the constraint!.......2002-05-03

Don't get me wrong--I'm a big TOC fan. I loved The Goal, Critical Chain, and It's Not Luck. I even bought a textbook on TOC. I was so excited for this book and so disappointed. I'm surprised anybody has given this book more than two starts. The plot is 100% non-captivating and I learned NOTHING new about TOC.

Please Mr. Goldratt--Give us something good next time.

When it's Tom Peters, it's not the content that matters, but the enthusiasm that you gain from it. I highly recommend it. Other books which I love: 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and Eightstorm: 8-Step Brainstorming for Innovative Managers.

I believed I would receive an unabridged audio version of the best selling book. This CD seem to be from a lecture. Plus it is copied from a cassette, since it states "turn the tape over." Do not purchase

1 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy the Audio CD.......2007-05-17

If you are looking for a worthwhile quantity of information presented in the book, do not buy the Audio CD version. It is low quality, apparently copied from a cassette version, and contains so little useful information is was a waste of my time and money. As an example, at the end of the CD is asks you to turn the tape over, but of course there is no back side of the CD. The information is truncated and choppy.

5 out of 5 stars Still excellent after all these years.......2007-05-04

It's been twenty-five years since In Search of Excellence first appeared in the book stores. When it appeared it was one of the very first books to make the general best seller list.

Over the last twenty-five years articles of all sorts have risen up to tell us that the research wasn't really valid or that the companies studied didn't outperform everyone else for the next quarter century. Those articles miss the point.

The important things about In Search of Excellence have nothing to do with whether the companies studied are doing well today or whether it was flawed as a piece of research. The book did not pretend to be a scientific study and it did not pretend it was picking companies for the ages.

The context is important. Japanese management, Japanese companies, and Japanese methods were ascendant. Books and articles called for American companies to act more Japanese, usually without any discussion of cultural differences. There was even talk that Japan would take over the economic world, leaving America in the dust.

In Search of Excellence was a look by two savvy consultants from the world's most revered consulting firm at what American companies were doing right. Another excellent book, The Art of Japanese Management had carried a similar message about a year before, but the stars aligned for In Search of Excellence and it became a best seller.

In Search of Excellence did what it set out to do. It showed that there were American companies doing good things and describing what those things were.

In Search of Excellence also did something groundbreaking and important. It has become Tom Peters' enduring legacy (since Bob Waterman went on to other pursuits) to establish the importance of enthusiasm, energy, humanity and spontaneity as counter and counterpoise to the "plan-the-error-out-of-it" school of management.

Tom's legacy, starting with In Search of Excellence, is that he changed the nature of the way we talk about management. That is no small thing.

But there is more than historical interest here. There's a lot you can learn from this book that will help you improve your results. Here's the list of key points, straight from the Table of Contents.

                    Managing Ambiguity and Paradox
                    A Bias for Action
                    Close to the Customer
                    Autonomy and Entrepreneurship
                    Productivity through People
                    Hands On, Value Driven
                    Stick to the Knitting
                    Simple Form, Lean Staff
                    Simultaneous Loose-Tight Priorities

Twenty-five years on, that's still a list that leads you to chapters stuffed with ideas and with wisdom. Twenty-five years on, this is a book you can learn a lot from.

                    3 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2007-04-04

This is a fairly good book with some still applicable knowledge for the business world today. One thing to understand though is that the author did knowlingly and willingly skew his research and admitted to that in the December 2001 copy of FastCompany. In this the author admitted amongst other things to faking the data. Even with this knowledge though the book has stood the test of time and is still a good read.

Although this was written quite a few years ago, the basic truths outlined in this book remain as pertinent today as then. The two authors set out to find the basic characteristics of excellent companies and they came up with the following:

                    1) A bias for Action - Intelligent companies experiment rather than debate.
                    2) Close to the Customer - Service and quality obsession from top to bottom.
                    3) Autonomy and entrepreneurship - The key for big companies - Act small.
                    4) Productivity through people - Treat people like adults.
                    5) Hands on, value driven - Find a common cause and sustain it.
                    6) Stick to the knitting - Build on things you know.
                    7) Simple form, Lean Staff - Best if manager can control all aspects of the business.
                    8) Simultaneous loose - tight properties - Flexible to maximize autonomy. Tight on values.

To this day, Tom Peters continues to trumpet the mantra of simplicity and innovation. Many others have jumped on board. Unfortunately far too many still can't get it right.

                                      Book Description

It looked like a great information system (IS), but all the ballyhoo didn't make it perform at the expected level. When that happens, the reason may be that technology took precedence over the human factor in system implementation. Successful implementation of information systems technology lies in managing the behavioral and organizational components of the process. Past data on this subject has involved mostly case studies, but this book provides practical information that those implementing information systems can use now. Pinto and Millet offer practical information on approaching the subject of IS from a managerial, rather than a technical, perspective. The second edition of this work covers such topics as implementation theory, prioritizing projects, implementation success and failure, critical success factors, techniques for planning and scheduling, dealing with change control pressures, system development life-cycle politics, improving the analysis and design phase, team building and cross-functional cooperation, and the MIS zoo.
