      Book Description

In today's knowledge-based global economy, continuous learning has become essential to ensuring a productive, competitive workforce. Confronted with both a growing demand for postbaccalaureate learning opportunities and increased competition, higher education institutions are developing new strategies. Institutions are pooling their resources, adopting new technologies, developing modularized curricula, focusing on quality assurance, and creating new credentials. Postbaccalaureate Futures explores the nature of the demand for postbaccalaureate learning and how this demand is influencing higher education generally--its financing, quality assurance, use of technology in teaching and learning, and public perceptions of the academy.

An ill-informed purchase can cost your organization it's customers, dollars, and reputation. Maximizing Business Performance through Software Packages: Best Practices for Justification, Selection, and Implementation explores the business challenges involved in justifying, selecting, and implementing software packages. It contains practical advice and insights on how to select "good fitting" software packages, how to justify them in terms of their ability to enable business process change or improvement, and most importantly, how to implement them successfully. Selecting and implementing enterprise architecture technology software solutions involves a large expenditure across all the resources of an organization. The process has become increasingly complex as business functions have become increasingly integrated. Maximizing Business Performance through Software Packages: Best Practices for Justification, Selection, and Implementation provides a definitive source that will help you select the solutions that best fit your business needs.

From the author: We use a systematic simulation study of computer-system loading policies to design a loading policy for a high-performance system. Our results illustrate the performance advantages of 'round-robin' disciplines, the interference caused by finite memory, and how this interference can be mitigated by using carefully selected loading policies that exploit information about job resource requirements. Our choice of performance measures allows us to assess response-time predictability and fairness as well as overall efficiency. Using the insights obtained from our study, we introduce a new type of policy, the NEST policy, which is structured to employ the principles of good scheduling, while avoiding shortcomings of commonly used approaches.

From the author: In this paper we present an analytical design algorithm to determine the near-minimum number of pickers required in an end-of-aisle order-picking operation based on a miniload automated storage/retrieval system. The algorithm is based on an approximate analytical model we developed to estimate the expected picker utilization (and the storage/retrieval machine utilization) for general system configurations with two or more pick positions per aisle and/or two or more aisles per picker. Book Description

Total Quality is a practical, proven approach to management that is successfully being applied throughout American industry-and more recently in health care organizations. Total Quality in Radiology: A Guide to Implementation is designed to be used by the neophyte or experienced quality improvement practitioner. Written by two authors with extensive experience in departmental leadership, problem solving, and improvement programs, this new book provides the reader with a step-by-step, practical approach for implementing total quality in a radiology department. The book covers all the principles of total quality and provides the basic tools necessary to begin and implement a detailed QI program. For the administrator, there are examples of actual radiology improvement projects that have been implemented in U.S. hospitals-including successes and setbacks. Lessons learned and pitfalls are openly discussed. For the radiologist, there is a fresh new look at quality from the "customer's" perspective-the patient and referring physician. Examples of programs "in operation" are provided as well as suggestions for other areas where radiology-initiated quality programs may have a positive impact on patient outcome. This book has something for those who want relief from crisis management and wish to maintain an abiding commitment to an improved health care workplace.

                                Book Description

In the mid-1990s, at the height of academic discussion about the inevitability of capitalist globalization, J. K. Gibson-Graham presented a groundbreaking and controversial argument for envisioning alternative economies. This new edition includes an introduction in which the authors address critical responses to The End of Capitalism and outline the economic research and activism they have been engaged in since the book was first published.

“Paralyzing problems are banished by this dazzlingly lucid, creative, and practical rethinking of class and economic transformation.” —Meaghan Morris, Lingnan University, Hong Kong

“Profoundly imaginative.” —Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, City University of New York “Filled with insights, it is clearly written and well supported with good examples of actual, deconstructive practices.” —International Journal of Urban and Regional Research

                                J. K. Gibson-Graham is the pen name of Katherine Gibson and Julie Graham, feminist economic geographers who work, respectively, at the Australian National University in Canberra and the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

                                  Book Description

This book contains a collection of original papers written and published by Professor Prajapati Trivedi on various aspects of public enterprise management and policy. While the book is centered around the Indian public enterprise policy, the issues (problems and solutions) discussed in the book are truly transcendental in their relevance. Policy makers from other countries have found it equally relevant to their context.

The distinguishing feature of this book is a common framework for analyzing various aspects of public enterprise policy. This approach allows the reader to see the interrelationships between them and is also designing public policies that are consistent with each other.

The unifying conceptual framework used in the book has come to be known as the Signaling System Approach. According to this framework, the root cause of most of the problems associated with public enterprises can be traced to the fact that they are confronted with multiple principals who have multiple goals, which are often conflicting. The book describes various approaches to manage public enterprises and design public policies given this background. The book contains nine sections dealing with the following areas of public enterprise policy:

                                  1. Origins of Public Enterprises
                                  2. Performance Evaluation of Public Enterprises
                                  3. Comparative Performance of Public and Private Enterprises
                                  4. Institutional Arrangements for Managing Public Enterprises
                                  5. Performance Information Systems for Public Enterprises
                                  6. Public Enterprise Pricing Policies
                                  7. Expert Committees on Public Enterprises
                                  8. Issues Relating to Motivation (incenives) in Public Enterprises
                                  9. Privatization of Public Enterprises

This unique book combines state of the art in public enterprise theory as well as practical insights regarding the design and implementation of public enterprise policy. It is an essential reading for all students of public enterprise management and policy.

In this extensive revision of his best-selling text, Irwin Goldstein, a leader in the training field, teams up with Kevin Ford, well-known for his work in "the learning organization," to provide readers with a framework for examining and establishing viable training programs in education, business, and government. Part I focuses on societal training issues, how organizations conduct assessments to understand their training needs, and significant issues in learning and instruction. Part II focuses on the evaluation process, and Part III reviews training programs and procedures.

5 out of 5 stars Much more than a business book!.......2005-06-22

I picked up the book looking for ideas on how to promote our business and my book. I came away with ideas for improving my life. Who ever guessed a business book could be so fascinating and gripping? I learned how to utilize my personal experiences to become proud of who I am, and to learn to use this to help others. Very valuable information for an author! After all that, I remembered why I bought the book in the first place and realized it really did show me how to brand my book and our business. A perfect book for those of us who must learn business and don't really enjoy the process--this book is educational, entertaining, and motivational all at the same time.

This book knocked my socks off. Chris nails one branding issue after another. Great for business person or any individual looking to improve their personal effectiveness. If you read this book and Covey's Eighth Habit at the same time, though, weird (but cool) things may happen in your life...just to warn you!

You will love this "Attention Please" book, and will want to recommended it to your colleagues. It's a hit! We're already waiting for Hilicki's next book. We're converts to telling our true stories, and now we understand more about the process of analyzing and sifting and selectively choosing which stories to tell and how to frame them to accurately represent our intentions and meanings.
