The survey made within companies in the frame of the Leonardo da Vinci project ''Technological Training for SME's'' (Leonardo da Vinci project CZ/98/1/82530/PI/III.1.a/FPI ''Technological Training for SME's'' (1998-2001)[1]), English version. Ostrava: b.n., 2001 (coordinator A. Labodova)) documented the need for effective ways of integrating currently separate management systems for quality management, environmental management and health and safety. According to the evolution of such management systems, it is increasingly desirable and feasible to integrate these systems into one complex system for each company. Different approaches for integrating and gaining advantages from this integration are reviewed in this paper. Two ways of integration are discussed-firstly the introduction of individual systems followed by the integration of the originally separate systems, and secondly the development and implementation of an integrated management system, integrated from the very beginning. The procedure of a detailed methodology for the implementation of an occupational health and safety system, which was developed within research for Ph.D. thesis (Labodova A. The implementation of integrated management system. Ph.D. thesis, VSB-Technical University Ostrava, Czech Republic; 2002) based on an established risk assessment methodology (Risk Management. Leonardo da Vinci project no. CZ/98/1/82530/PI/III.1.a/FPI ''Technological Training for SME's'', English version. Ostrava: b.n., 2001, Module 3, Level 3 (project coordinator A. Labodova)), was used as a particular system approach and also for the implementation of integrated management system based on risk analysis on greenfield. Both ways were tested in the form of case studies. Both case studies have demonstrated the functioning of the theoretical model for implementation of risk analysis based management systems.

Description:
The Elbe-DSS is a computer based system for integrated river basin management of the German part of River Elbe basin. Simulation models are used to assess the efficiency of measures such as reforestation, changes of agricultural practices or the efficiency of wastewater treatment plants for achieving management targets. MONERIS and GREAT-ER are integrated into the Elbe-DSS to assess nutrient and pollutant loads. MONERIS calculates nutrient inputs from diffuse and point sources on a sub-catchment scale of about 1000km^2. GREAT-ER is a tool for exposure assessment of point source emissions and considers fate in sewage treatment plants as well as degradation and transport in rivers. Both models make long-term predictions, but their spatial scales of operations differ. GREAT-ER divides the whole river network into small segments that are linked through a routing algorithm. The segments are coupled to MONERIS using accumulated flow length distribution. Linking the two models allows to distribute diffuse nutrient emissions calculated from MONERIS and point source emissions from GREAT-ER to the river network, where further elimination and transport processes are calculated. We exemplify the DSS in a study assessing the effects of different reforestation and erosion control measures on phosphate loads and concentrations in the river network.

Ok for a text book, but there are better books out there.......2007-08-03

This was a required text for a MBA management class I was taking. While I enjoyed the class, the book itself was disappointing, and even the authors point out that many of the surveys and self-analysis tools are limited because the better tools are all proprietary. Most of the book is a re-hash of standard managment philosophy, with some statistical justification thrown in.
If you are looking to improve your management skills, I recommend going straight to the primary sources, which includes most of Stephen Covey's books, along with other management and self-improvement books like Emotional Intelligence, Execution, One-Minute Manager, etc. This book tries to cover the same ground, but ends up being far less informative or interesting then the popular management books it emulates.

This book is an excellent introduction to performance consulting. It assumes that you already have the "tools" and know-how to address performance needs, so the focus is on the consulting process itself. What I found especially useful were the question lists. In almost every chapter, Hale includes a list of questions you might ask your client in order to guide them and pinpoint the exact issue and identify the best solution. This is the side of consulting that is often given little attention in books and in the classroom, but is of vital importance.

Another worthwhile highlight is the coverage on how to actually run a consulting business - in terms of financial considerations, record-keeping, etc. Another great book that goes into more depth on the "running your business" aspect is The Business of Consulting by Elaine Biech.

Knowledge Management is a pretty complex subject, and I'm not going to try to detail everything that's covered in this book.
What I will say is this:

1. The book is comprehensive
2. The authors REALLY know what they're talking about
3. The book is packed with spot-on insights and excellent advice
4. There are a wealth of checklists that will help you to focus on what really matters
5. The book is well written (easy to read without being simplistic or patronising)
6. The authors REALLY know what they're talking about. And yes, I KNOW I said that already - But it is SO imnportant, and so rare!

At the time that I read this book I was working on a KM project for a subsidiary of one of the major comms companys in the UK. They chose to ignore the advice these authors provide, and today they're just one more company stuck on the "Oh we'd rather downsize than develop some genuine expertise" road to oblivion.

It is my perception that if they'd followed the advice in this book they would have had fewer layoffs and would be a lot more financially successful, today.

But they didn't, they didn't - and they aren't!.

You want to be amongst the IT winners? Read and use the information in this book.

You want to be a loser? Just ignore this book.

IT'S THAT SIMPLE.

This book is a fantastic overview of knowledge management in the field of business. There are lots of questionnaires that can help facilitate knowledge management intiatives in your own company or business. The authors provide many case studies of how real companies have maximized their knowledge in ROI in technology, customer services, creating new products and in consulting practices.

This book is geared toward people with no prior interest in knowledge management, but also contains useful information for those who have been in the field since its inception.

Useful, practical reading........2000-05-09

You really get some tips to audit the processes in your company. Definitely a must-read for any executive in a bigger firm. Smaller firms normally have other things to worry about.
