5 out of 5 stars Microsoft Office Outlook 2003(How to Do Everything).......2007-08-09

I am most impressed with Amozon's sevice, the book arrived on time as forcast. I am still working my way through the book and I am finding it both informstive and helpful. I would frecommend it.

4 out of 5 stars task-oriented, well-written.......2005-10-30

If you are looking for a task-oriented, well-written book that covers every aspect of Microsoft's Outlook 2003, this is the book for you. The author is clearly comfortable with technical material but is able to communicate this material to a non-technical reader. The book is very thorough and provides notes, cautions, tips, and shortcuts throughout. Lots of useful information such as dealing with junk e-mail and spam. I recommend this book highly.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth buying.......2005-10-12

This book doesn't offer much that you can't find in Outlook's Help system, it's poorly organized, and it isn't written well. You can almost hear the sleepy author's fingers clattering on the keyboard as he hurries to meet his deadline and get this book finished. Whether readers can understand a word didn't rank high on the author's priority list. Nothing is explained well. Nowhere does he give you any advice about how to make Outlook easier to use.

Don't bother with this hastily written book. It's hard to read and it isn't worth the asking price.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good, could have been better.......2002-10-11

This is a pretty good introduction to QuickBooks for somebody already familiar with business accounting. It tells you how to do all of the typical things you'd want to do for a small business, often giving alternate approaches that are either faster or more useful that the obvious ones.

It has an introduction to accounting mechanics in Appendix B, but that just explains a few basic facts about double-entry accounting systems, and tells you to memorize a table of credit vs. debit effects (e.g. debits increase asset accounts and decrease liability accounts). The book fails to explain why debits sometimes make things go up and sometimes down, something that would've been much more helpful than simple memorization.

I would've liked to see a chapter explaining what sorts of accounts a typical company of a specific type would set up, and how they would be used. I like to know *why* I'm doing something as well as *how* I should do it.

Perhaps such things are better handled in a general book on business accounting, but a short chapter would've been enough.

The tone of the book is generally light-hearted. Occasionally it gets a little thick, e.g. on page 61: "Now this will be a big surprise. (I'm just kidding.) QuickBooks provides descriptions [...] When you choose the command, QuickBooks displays the lost city of Atlantis. Okay, not really. QuickBooks actually displays [...]". It's not usually that silly, but the author's sense of humor does pervade the book.

This book can be confusing, with insufficient examples, coming perilously close to techno-speak too often.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed in what is missing........2003-09-15

I was looking for a book that would explain linear programming (optimization modeling) and pivot tables - the book did an excellent job for those two tasks, so I bought it. My mistake was in assuming that the MBA moniker meant that it would cover most of the features for which MBA's use Excel. I was first disappointed when VLOOKUP (vertical lookup) and HLOOKUP (horizontal lookup) were not covered. Next, I was surprised that macros are not covered. The last straw was when I read that the only way to fix a circular reference in Excel is to remove it - FALSE. I'm no Excel guru but even I can use help and find out how to step through iterations manually to solve when a circular reference is necessary (e.g. pay out 10% of gross profits as long as net profits are greater than $1,000). Don't be fooled by the title.

          Book Description

New efficiency theory refers to the various parametric and semi-parametric methods of estimating production and cost frontiers, which include data envelopment analysis (DEA) with its diverse applications in management science and operations research. This monograph develops and generalizes the new efficiency theory by highlighting the interface between economic theory and operations research.

Some of the outstanding features of this monograph are: (1) integrating the theory of firm efficiency and industry equilibrium, (2) emphasizing growth efficiency in a dynamic setting, (3) incorporating uncertainty of market demand and prices, and (4) the implications of group efficiency by sharing investments. Applications discuss in some detail the growth and decline of US computer industry, and the relative performance of mutual fund portfolios.

                Book Description

This book analyzes how a large but finite number of agents interact, and what sorts of macroeconomic statistical regularities or patterns may evolve from these interactions. By keeping the number of agents finite, the book examines situations such as fluctuations about equilibria, multiple equilibria and asymmetrical cycles of models which are caused by model states stochastically moving from one basin of attraction to another. All of these are not tractable using traditional deterministic modeling approaches. The book also discusses how agents may form clusters with stationary distributions of cluster sizes. These have important applications in analyzing volatilities of asset returns.

                Download Description

This book has two components: stochastic dynamics and stochastic random combinatorial analysis. The first discusses evolving patterns of interactions of a large but finite number of agents of several types. Changes of agent types or their choices or decisions over time are formulated as jump Markov processes with suitably specified transition rates: optimizations by agents make these rates generally endogenous. Probabilistic equilibrium selection rules are also discussed, together with the distributions of relative sizes of the bases of attraction. As the number of agents approaches infinity, we recover deterministic macroeconomic relations of more conventional economic models. The second component analyzes how agents form clusters of various sizes. This has applications for discussing sizes or shares of markets by various agents which involve some combinatorial analysis patterned after the population genetics literature. These are shown to be relevant to distributions of returns to assets, volatility of returns, and power laws.

Effective training delivery is a critical skill for keeping an organization competitive. This book offers, for the first time, a research-based analysis of the 14 key skills (or "competencies") trainers must master to be effective. It provides trainers with pragmatic ways to apply these competencies in the real world. Some of these skills include how to:

                • Analyze materials and learner information • Establish credibility • Create a psychological environment that keeps learners' interest level high • Communicate effectively • Use questioning techniques • Respond positively to trainees' questions and reactions • Provide positive reinforcement • Utilize specific tools (case studies, simulation, lecture, discussion, and others) • Evaluate afterwards • Train in an international setting.

5 out of 5 stars Good Guide for performance improvement.......2003-08-06

I highly recommend this book. The book is very thorough in its coverage, east to read, and easy to implement.
This book explain the importance of each delivery competency to the effectiveness of a training program, then provides strategies for mastering and applying each skill in training situations.
Outlines outstanding training delivery skills based on the latest research in the field, and presents 14 key competencies that the International Board of Standards for Training, Performance, and Instruction has identified for success in delivering group training.

                4 out of 5 stars Very educational.......2000-10-26

The book was very educational. The authors really knew what they were talking about. They understood how tough it can be to be a trainer and the obsticles we are faced with every day.

They gave an abundance of information to overcome any training hurdle.

                      Book Description

This book deals with some of the most important questions in innovation research such as the role of corporate governance, national systems of innovation, and government regulation in the development and adoption of innovations. In particular, it presents new evidence on the factors which shape innovation in construction by drawing on extensive interviews with construction firms across Europe.

The authors offer broad lessons for the systems of innovation approach and suggest that particular structures of ownership and management, and inter-organizational relations are responsible for variations in the economic performance of the construction industry in different European countries. The particular challenges posed by the adoption of sustainable technologies such as natural thermal insulation and active solar heating systems are also explored. These environmental innovations are expected to have an impact on sustainable building and regeneration, and at a more general level can help identify the factors which can facilitate or inhibit the innovation process. Importantly, the book does not simply focus on the relationship between technology, firm organization and competitiveness, but also considers the social and institutional aspects which affect the construction sector's ability to innovate. The extensive case studies from 5 European countries allow the reader to analyze innovation performance from an international comparative perspective.

Innovation in Construction represents an important contribution to the theoretical debate on innovation. It will be highly useful to scholars and students interested in innovation studies, environmental management, and construction management and economics.

                      Book Description

John Murdock and Terry Crum ask this important question:

How will your job be done in five years?

The only thing certain in business is change. And change is occurring faster and faster, spurred by information technology. How can managers do their usual jobs and also keep up with changes in technology?

The authors have good news for overwhelmed managers: you don't need to study the details of technology to join in the information revolution. Instead, leave to "Information Technologists" all concerns about how technology works. Your better role is to use your deep understanding of your business to decide what technology should be used to do. Through directed observation and ordinary common sense, you can become an "Information Manager," one who knows how information is used in your business and how to optimize that use.

This book is about information, not technology. It is the place where business managers and technology specialists find common ground. It is written by two people who met ten years ago; one knew a business well and one knew information technology well. The authors share valuable analytical and rhetorical tools they developed to work together. These tools apply to all industries in which people who know the business need to collaborate with those who know information technology.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read for Business Professionals and Computer People.......2002-09-27

In a world of information overload and too much tech talk, finally a book that any businessperson can read and understand. Computers are a fact of life and business -- but too often "business people" and "computer people" find themselves at odds, seeming to speak different languages and all while trying to accomplish the same goals.

Information systems professionals and business professionals should read this book for its insights into how to collaborate and make better use of the information organizations already possess.

I recommend this book highly to all persons involved in knowledge-based businesses. In addition to business professionals, I think all information systems professionals should read this book. If a company can get its management team and information technology team to read this book, they will finally have a common language. Armed with that common language they can pull down the walls of hostility caused by years of misunderstanding and finally get the long overdue payback on investments in technology.
