Customer Reviews:
Good, could have been better.......2002-10-11
It has an introduction to accounting mechanics in Appendix B, but that just explains a few basic facts about double-entry accounting systems, and tells you to memorize a table of credit vs. debit effects (e.g. debits increase asset accounts and decrease liability accounts). The book fails to explain why debits sometimes make things go up and sometimes down, something that would've been much more helpful than simple memorization.
I would've liked to see a chapter explaining what sorts of accounts a typical company of a specific type would set up, and how they would be used. I like to know *why* I'm doing something as well as *how* I should do it.
Perhaps such things are better handled in a general book on business accounting, but a short chapter would've been enough.
The tone of the book is generally light-hearted. Occasionally it gets a little thick, e.g. on page 61: "Now this will be a big surprise. (I'm just kidding.) QuickBooks provides descriptions [...] When you choose the command, QuickBooks displays the lost city of Atlantis. Okay, not really. QuickBooks actually displays [...]". It's not usually that silly, but the author's sense of humor does pervade the book.

Modeling Aggregate Behaviour & Fluctuations in Economics
Masanao Aoki Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0521781264 |
Book Description
This book analyzes how a large but finite number of agents interact, and what sorts of macroeconomic statistical regularities or patterns may evolve from these interactions. By keeping the number of agents finite, the book examines situations such as fluctuations about equilibria, multiple equilibria and asymmetrical cycles of models which are caused by model states stochastically moving from one basin of attraction to another. All of these are not tractable using traditional deterministic modeling approaches. The book also discusses how agents may form clusters with stationary distributions of cluster sizes. These have important applications in analyzing volatilities of asset returns.Download Description
This book has two components: stochastic dynamics and stochastic random combinatorial analysis. The first discusses evolving patterns of interactions of a large but finite number of agents of several types. Changes of agent types or their choices or decisions over time are formulated as jump Markov processes with suitably specified transition rates: optimizations by agents make these rates generally endogenous. Probabilistic equilibrium selection rules are also discussed, together with the distributions of relative sizes of the bases of attraction. As the number of agents approaches infinity, we recover deterministic macroeconomic relations of more conventional economic models. The second component analyzes how agents form clusters of various sizes. This has applications for discussing sizes or shares of markets by various agents which involve some combinatorial analysis patterned after the population genetics literature. These are shown to be relevant to distributions of returns to assets, volatility of returns, and power laws.

Innovation in Construction: A European Analysis
Marcela Miozzo , and Paul Dewick Manufacturer: Edward Elgar Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1843765217 |
Book Description
This book deals with some of the most important questions in innovation research such as the role of corporate governance, national systems of innovation, and government regulation in the development and adoption of innovations. In particular, it presents new evidence on the factors which shape innovation in construction by drawing on extensive interviews with construction firms across Europe. The authors offer broad lessons for the systems of innovation approach and suggest that particular structures of ownership and management, and inter-organizational relations are responsible for variations in the economic performance of the construction industry in different European countries. The particular challenges posed by the adoption of sustainable technologies such as natural thermal insulation and active solar heating systems are also explored. These environmental innovations are expected to have an impact on sustainable building and regeneration, and at a more general level can help identify the factors which can facilitate or inhibit the innovation process. Importantly, the book does not simply focus on the relationship between technology, firm organization and competitiveness, but also considers the social and institutional aspects which affect the construction sector's ability to innovate. The extensive case studies from 5 European countries allow the reader to analyze innovation performance from an international comparative perspective.
Innovation in Construction represents an important contribution to the theoretical debate on innovation. It will be highly useful to scholars and students interested in innovation studies, environmental management, and construction management and economics.

Common Sense on the Information Revolution and Your Job
John E. Murdock , and Terry L. Crum Manufacturer: Lake House Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 097230200X |
Book Description
John Murdock and Terry Crum ask this important question:How will your job be done in five years?
The only thing certain in business is change. And change is occurring faster and faster, spurred by information technology. How can managers do their usual jobs and also keep up with changes in technology?
The authors have good news for overwhelmed managers: you don't need to study the details of technology to join in the information revolution. Instead, leave to "Information Technologists" all concerns about how technology works. Your better role is to use your deep understanding of your business to decide what technology should be used to do. Through directed observation and ordinary common sense, you can become an "Information Manager," one who knows how information is used in your business and how to optimize that use.
This book is about information, not technology. It is the place where business managers and technology specialists find common ground. It is written by two people who met ten years ago; one knew a business well and one knew information technology well. The authors share valuable analytical and rhetorical tools they developed to work together. These tools apply to all industries in which people who know the business need to collaborate with those who know information technology.
Customer Reviews:
Great Read for Business Professionals and Computer People.......2002-09-27
Information systems professionals and business professionals should read this book for its insights into how to collaborate and make better use of the information organizations already possess.
I recommend this book highly to all persons involved in knowledge-based businesses. In addition to business professionals, I think all information systems professionals should read this book. If a company can get its management team and information technology team to read this book, they will finally have a common language. Armed with that common language they can pull down the walls of hostility caused by years of misunderstanding and finally get the long overdue payback on investments in technology.
