        5 out of 5 stars A highly recommended "must-read" for home-based businesses.......2003-04-19

Authoritatively written by a Certified Public Accountant Norm Ray who draws from his more thirty-five years of professional experience, Smart Tax Write-Offs is now in an updated fourth edition and presents the reader with a straightforward collection of advantageous guidelines and suggestions which small business owners can utilize to save money. Thirty pages of this brief yet practical guide are devoted to an extensive checklist of common items that can be considered business supplies and deducted to save money. 5 out of 5 stars Deductions are Money in the Bank.......2000-10-06

Concentrate on net not gross; what is important is how much you keep. Every business needs all the deductions it is entitled to. If you are self-employed or run a small business, searching for deductions is fun. And it is your money.

This 128-page book lists and explains over 700 deductions a business owner is legally entitled to. For coverage, click on Table of Contents in the left-hand column of this page.

When I was just starting out in the business world, working for someone else, I vowed to learn about deductions. Each year, I wrote down every cent I spent, including each penny in the parking meter. At the end of the year, I totaled my expenses and send the totals to a tax preparer. I was amazed at how much money I got back from the IRS. That taught me some lessons: Keep (accurate) records, use a tax preparer and get your money back.

Norm Ray is a CPA and an experienced home-based business owner. He has been in your trench and is well-equipped to advise you on financial matters.

As a (self-employed) author of 113 books (including revisions and foreign-language editions) and over 500 magazine articles and a consultant to the publishing industry, I recommend this book to writers, publishers, the self-employed and small business owners. DanPoynter@ParaPublishing.com.

5 out of 5 stars Hundreds of legal tax deductions for entrepreneurs........2000-03-03

From deductions for home-based businesses to independent contractors and equipment purchases, Smart Tax Write-Offs combines a checklist of possibilities with chapters outlining hundreds of tax deduction possibilities for entrepreneurs in this newly revised third edition for 1999 and 2000..

1 out of 5 stars This "pamphlet" is the worst book I ever bought........1999-09-16

I bought this book because of the catchy title. The book is 120 pages long with very trivial tax tips. On top of that, almost haft of the book is blank space. I bought this book with certificate. Now, I got stuck with "smart" book. Oh well, smart for the author, stupeeed of me.

1 out of 5 stars For Those Who Appreciate A Flare For the Obvious.......1999-09-06

This book (It's really more of a pamphlet) is all of 65 pages in length (Actually it's not even "all of" 65 pages -- There's a lot of conspicuous double spacing as well as a blank page in each chapter for "Notes"). The remaining 56 pages contain mostly silly checklists as well as the index. The information provided is basic and, in most cases, extremely obvious. If you're looking for some really interesting ideas, this is not the place to look. This is the type of information you will find in just about any mainstream magazine around tax time.

From the supplier: The IRS should establish a safe harbor independent contractor classification so that small businesses can be sure that, by completing certain procedures, they will not be subject to costly IRS attacks on their worker classifications. The safe harbor proposed by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants would require the employer and independent contractor to sign a written agreement acknowledging the independent contractor relationship and detailing respective obligations. The employee would withhold 5% of income as a credit toward income taxes and would file information returns.

                    Book Description

The only rule for Web success is that there are no rules. The dot- com entrepreneurs who make it big are the ones who forge their own paths and hammer out their own strategies. But where can a Web start-up or spinout go for reliable guidance, other than the school of virtual hard knocks?

DIGITAL RUSH explores the experiences and ideas behind some of the most fascinating and fast-growing Internet businesses of our time. Unlike other Web profile books, it digs deep by concentrating on a select group of cyber- entrepreneurs.

And they're hardly the usual dot-com suspects. Readers go behind the scenes with innovators such as: Startups.com, VarsityBooks.com, Enews.com, LivePrint.com, foofoo.com, RocketRadio, and others. The people who created, financed, and sweat blood over these sites talk about their dumbest mistakes, their smartest moves, how to cut through the clutter, and what they'd do differently if they were starting today.

This candid and business-savvy book delivers invaluable insights on how to: Start an Internet company * Take it to greater levels * Add an e-component to a brick-and-mortar business * Secure capital at every stage * Find talent * Attend to customer service * Generate new ideas * Forecast future Internet trends, and more.

1 out of 5 stars Race for Riches?.......2002-01-05

While the reading is entertaining, there is little technical content and the fate of the 9 dot-coms studied was disastrous: Startups.com and LivePrint.com are out of business, VarsityBooks.com had an IPO and is trading just above $1 (Jan '02), and I none of the other six companies seemed to have had an IPO.

                    4 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable.......2001-04-27

After having so many friends make and lose millions, this was a particularly interesting story about the rags to riches to rags story of the Internet economy. I could also see this book being extremely interesting for entrepreneurs wanting to learn lessons from other Internet entrepreneurs who have been there and done that. All in all, this was a very enjoyable book that a lot of people will like and learn quite a bit from.

                    5 out of 5 stars Insightful.......2001-04-27

Having read countless books on ecommerce and digital businesses from unknown authors, I really enjoyed the stories and lessons from true entrepreneurs in the trenches. I highly recomment this book to anyone interested in the crazy ups and downs that the Internet economy had.

                    5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2001-02-15

This book is actually very well written and I would highly recommend it. The disparaging comments below are from disgruntled employees at a company that did not make it into the book (and are now out of business)-pay them no mind. This is a great look at the Internet economy and is a must read for Internet entrepreneurs.

5 out of 5 stars For any entrepreneur considering e-commerce.......2001-02-11

Digital Rush: Nine Internet Start-Ups in the Race For Dot-Com Riches provides the reader with an inside, backstage survey of ingenious and tenacious self-starters in some of today's fast-growing, ground-breaking Internet companies. Through lively profiles based on in-depth interviews, the authors provide revealing, personal perspectives on the key elements (technology, capital, talent, perseverance) that go into creating and running a successful e-business. The reader will come away with clear and invaluable advice about testing an idea before launching it; securing crucial capital and support at every stage; attracting, motivating, and keeping the right people; standing apart from competitors and delivering outstanding customer service; adding an e-component to a brick-and-mortar business; keeping on top of new technologies and anticipating future Internet trends. Book Description

Offering a new and integrative approach to the study of formal models in the social and behavioral sciences, this book presents a theory forcing the specification of information currently neglected by game theory and offers a unified solution, or equilibrium, concept. Unifying the representation of social environments as situations, the theory extends the set of social environments included in current game theory, and accomodates coalition formation as well as bounded rationality concerning the perception and the computation abilities of the players. By applying the concept to game theory, the author relates many of the currently disparate solution concepts and suggests new and interesting ones.

                        Book Description

The link between storytelling and the concept of change and transition is as old as some of the stories themselves; the frog turns into the handsome prince, the ugly duckling into a swan and Cinderella into a princess. However, storytelling is not just the province of children: it is a powerful and compelling resource that can be used to re-frame and re-size problems and provide useful metaphors for the boardroom, office and individual.

A book of tales must rise or fall on the quality of the stories it presents. And in that regard, this storybook earns a mixed report card. Most of the stories are clear and pithy, although some hint at change without being directly related to it. A case in point is "The Old Man and his Grandson," a brief moral tale about the need to demonstrate empathy and the fact that everyone grows older. Other stories, however, are perfectly apropos and even come with a hint of humor to prod listeners to accept change. Unnervingly, some of the less engaging stories come from author Margaret Parkin's personal experiences. On the other hand, her informative introduction makes a compelling case for the power of narrative in introducing and abetting transformation. She supplies excellent questions for further study after each story to keep the discussion on point. Overall, we recommend this book to those who would like to add a few new anecdotes to their quiver. If just one helps spur your organization be more flexible, that will be a success story worth telling.

                          Book Description

Quietly but implacably, powerful transnational corporations are gaining power over our visual world. A 'global, visual content industry' increasingly controls images supplied to advertisers, marketers and designers, yet so far the process has, paradoxically, evaded the public eye. This book is the first to expose the interior workings of the visual content industry, which produces approximately 70% of the images that define consumer cultures. The corporate acquisition of major photographic and film archives, as well as the digital rights to much of the world's fine art, is having a profound effect on what we see. From stock photography to new technologies, this book powerfully engages with the historical and cultural issues relating to visual culture and new media. How has stock photography, the system of 'renting out' ready-made images, transformed the role of marketing and advertising? What impact are digital technologies having on the practices of industry professionals? How have software programs such as Photoshop enabled professionals to play 'God' with photographs and how does this influence our belief in the integrity of images?Combining original research on stock photography with a new theoretical take on the circulation of images in contemporary culture, The Image Factory provides a comprehensive and in-depth exploration of industrialized commercial photography, its uses and abuses.

                            Book Description

How do images communicate? How do images circulate in consumer culture? What does the production and consumption of images mean for marketing and society? What can a visual approach bring to consumer research?

A key characteristic of the 21st century economy is "the image." Brand development is based on image, products advertised via images, and corporate image is critical for economic success. This book draws from art history, photography and visual studies to develop an interdisciplinary, image-based approach to understanding consumer behavior.

The book focuses on four themes: representation, photography, images and identity. It presents a theoretical perspective on visual consumption, providing wide-ranging examples from advertising, the internet, photography, design, theatre and tourism. The author also discusses the importance of the internet in bringing visual issues into the mainstream of strategic thinking, and spurring research into perception and preference of visual displays.

This book provides an unparalleled guide to the visual consumption processes necessary for understanding and succeeding in today's market.

                              Book Description

Every year, thousands of women attempt to kick their smoking habit because it is an unhealthy, expensive addiction. And every year, thousands do not quit because of nicotine cravings and because smoking has an image which is almost as addictive as the cigarette itself. It is seductive and alluring - but where does this image come from, and has it always been so deadly? In Smoke Signals, Tinkler charts women's changing relationship to tobacco from the 1880s to the 1980s during which smoking transformed from a male practice to one enjoyed by both sexes. Focusing on the feminization of cigarette smoking, the author unravels the role of visual culture and the impact of social, economic, medical and technological changes. Drawing on women's own photographs, alongside images from magazines, newspapers, television and film, this book provides a detailed and stimulating exploration of the role of visual culture in the history of women and smoking.

                                            Book Description

Thirty authors from leading European companies combine theory with industrial experience resulting in a comprehensive overview of different software process improvement methodologies. Based on the results of three international conferences organized by ISCN, International Software Collaborative Network, Better Software Practice for Business Benefit covers different improvement methodologies and a thorough discussion of process improvement issues from business to success.

In this book, you will find a large set of different improvement methodologies and a thorough discussion of process improvement issues from business to success. The book's three parts - Principles, Experience, and Summary and Outlook - use industrial case studies to illustrate the implementation of business strategies and improvement methodologies, looks into the future of process improvement initiatives, outlines available process analysis and assessment methodologies, and details improved planning strategies including goal based measurement.

Process groups, quality engineers, and consultants with a vital interest in basic information about structured evaluation and improvement will benefit from this book. Project managers on various levels within all organizations dealing with software can also use this handbook.

                                            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Practice and theory compared and contrasted.......2001-06-20

This book is about the software quality methods and initiatives that have evolved in Europe. It's a collection of presentations that were given at three years of ISCN (International Software Collaborative Network)conferences.

Dr Richard Messnarz, the editor, did an excellent job of ensuring that the material is not only uniformly written, which in itself is no small task considering that there are over 30 contributors from 11 European countries. However, the way this book is organized reflects the real editorial genius. It's divided into three parts covering (1) principles (theory), (2) experience (practical application of the principles), and (3)synthesis and conclusion (what the future holds and how the European approach is different from the U.S. approach).

Chapter 1 is clear roadmap to the book and shows how the subsequent chapters tie together to form an alignment of principles and experience. More importantly, it also shows how technical aspects of the principles link to business issues. This is evident in Part 1 where chapters 2, 5, 6 and 7 address business-enabling topics, while chapters 3 and 4 focus in the underlying processes and methods to achieve them. My favorite chapters from this part of the book were 6-Process and Product Measurement, and 7-Costs and Benefits of Software Process Improvement. In particular, chapter 6 had clearly written guidance on project controls that is a pet interest.

Part 2 is devoted to the experience part that ties to the principles. The ten chapters cover thoroughly how the principles were employed at a variety of European companies. I like the cross-section that the editor includes, which covers big and small companies. This selection of case studies shows that size of the company does not matter as much as commitment to perform, which is the bottom line in any endeavor. This is where theory meets practice, and the case studies clearly show that the two can be aligned.

Part 3 is a single chapter that outlines the differences between the U.S. and European approaches to software quality and processes. It is interesting reading because the challenges are cultural and also hampered by national pride. However, from my perspective, which includes international consulting, the biggest cultural differences are company cultures and not national ones. Still, lessons can be learned from this chapter because you will see the same symptoms when comparing two different companies in, say, Los Angeles, as you will when comparing national cultures.

Overall: every one of the chapters is well written and thought provoking. The processes and methods, drawn from a large number of European initiatives, are true best practices. The case studies are not only illuminating from the perspective of someone who wants to implement mature processes, but they are also inspirational in that they show that it can be done in companies big and small. The biggest value, though, is the masterful way the editor has organized this book. The way principle is linked to experience, experience of large companies compared to that of smaller ones, and the array of approaches and methodologies presented make this book easy to use as a reference. I strongly recommend it and give it 5 stars.

I was given this book at a seminar I went to at AT&T. I have always been interested in IT Strategic Planning since I have been in management within the IT field for more than 20 years.

I found this book to be very theoretical, and not very real world oriented. If I were to implement his suggestions I could soon be in trouble.

However, it does have some good information and some graphics that I found useful for presentation purposes.
